WHY

DID YOU CHOOSE UC SAN DIEGO?

A big reason I decided on UC San Diego was because of the quality of the Theatre program. UC San Diego is famous for STEM and Cognitive Science programs, but the Theatre program at UC San Diego is also top notch. With the La Jolla Playhouse right here on campus, the UC San Diego drama community is able to be involved with many wellknown scholars and artists. The undergraduate Theatre program is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of all aspects involved in Theatre production, which has helped me explore my options for the future.

Our unique college system is one of many things that makes UC San Diego such a special place. UC San Diego is a large campus with an international reputation, but the college system allows our undergraduates to experience more personalized advising, student support and leadership opportunities within their smaller college community. Each college has their own general education requirements and college assignment is not based on major. Students may study any major regardless of college affiliation. Get to know our colleges before ranking them on your UC application. View the First-Year and Transfer General Education Requirements PDFs on the Admissions site at admissions.ucsd.edu/colleges.

HOW HAS THE COLLEGE SYSTEM BENEFITED YOUR TIME AT UC SAN DIEGO?

So much of my experience here at UC San Diego has revolved around my college (Sixth). The college system has created such an incredible community within UC San Diego and allowed me to form connections with staff and students that would otherwise not have been possible at such a large institution.

I have been heavily involved with Sixth College through Sixth College Orientation, Sixth College Student Council and the Sixth College Technology Committee. All of these positions are where I have met some of my closest friends here at UC San Diego and developed my leadership and communication skills (as well as my Sixth Spirit!).

EIGHT COLLEGES ONE UNIVERSITY

A Community of Neighborhoods

Think of UC San Diego as a living and learning community made up of different neighborhoods. Each undergraduate college is a neighborhood. They each have their own philosophy and general education requirements. Additionally, each undergraduate college has its own staff, traditions, and residence facilities–firstyear students typically live at their college, while new transfers have the option to live on campus in a transfer-centered living learning community. Every college provides access to personalized academic advising, support services, and opportunities to get involved.

MY INSPIRATION

“For me, growing up in that neighborhood was not only interesting and special, but posed a lot of different challenges. One of those challenges was access to a quality education and what inspired me to be a scientist were mentors that I had along the way.”

MY ADVICE TO UNDERGRADUATES

“Don’t be afraid to seek out mentorship. You should have a faculty mentor and perhaps a graduate student or upperclassman mentor. A great mentor can be the difference between a mediocre undergraduate experience and a great one that sets you on a path for success at all stages of your career.”

WHY

DID YOU CHOOSE UC SAN DIEGO?

Being a music major, the department really emphasizes a lot of experimental and avant garde techniques to music making, which is different to most schools for music which are very conservatory and focus on classical. We still have that here, but we also focus on jazz and more atonal, broader aspects of music. So, that's one of the biggest things I wanted out of my music career.
