ELECTIONS CONTROVERSIES FLARE UP IN ASUCR

video evidence of [OUR]Voice candidates laptopping were brought to the judicial branch, yet the students participating did not receive strikes. A candidate may receive up to three strikes before being removed from the election. Ashley Harano, [OUR] Voice’s candidate for ASUCR president, declined to comment on the laptopping accusations on behalf of her party.

Over 150 members of the UCR community attended a candlelight vigil last Thursday to show support for the people of Nepal after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Asian country and other surrounding areas, resulting in more than 7,000 deaths and displacing over a million people who are still in need of food and shelter. The vigil, hosted by the South Asian Federation (SAF) and Asian Pacific Student Programs (APSP) at UCR, gave students, staff and faculty a chance to learn more about the devastating earthquake, pay their respects and provide donations to help those affected. SAF member Prianka Sharma said that because recovery periods are so long for most natural disasters such as the earthquake, coverage and additional aid tend to gradually fade. She felt that the vigil would help assist in combating that, especially in Nepal, saying that “a devastation like this stops (the country) from progressing into a developed one.” ASUCR Marketing Director and Co-President of SAF Ravin Rathod agreed with Sharma on emphasizing aid, but acknowledged a different reason for possible insufficient aid, saying,

Tensions have spiked in ASUCR after two senate meetings, during which the removal of a laptopping bylaw and an attempt to overturn an executive order to reinstate two justices, displayed a divide between members of the senate and the executive cabinet (ECAB).

Complaints regarding laptopping by [OUR]Voice, and debates over whether alleged attempts to block punitive actions against the party violate ASUCR’s system of checks and balances, called the integrity of ASUCR elections into question. to its controversy as a potential form of coercion, the practice has been banned since 2012. Issues regarding the questionable practice were brought up by students during Wednesday’s public forum. Multiple representatives from PAC: Pride, Action, Change and [YOU]CR brought forward numerous incidents, claiming that the judicial branch failed to address them. Swipes for the Homeless launched at UCR SANDY VAN Senior Staff Writer

A program dedicated to relieving hunger for the homeless delivered approximately 4,322 pounds of food, equivalent to the weight of an average mid-size car, last Thursday to Feeding America, a network of food banks across the United States. Swipes for the Homeless at UCR operates by asking students with UCR meal plans to donate their meal swipes between Week 9 and 10 of each quarter. Each participant can donate up to three meal swipes, which are then converted into their original food value to purchase food for donation. Meal swipes are accepted at the dining halls in the dorms, the Market at Glen Mor and the ► SEE SWIPES, PAGE 8
