The University Village (UV), a dining and shopping center near UC Riverside, will be adding a wider array of stores and restaurants over the next few months, according to Valerie Soule, marketing director for NewMark Merrill, the company that manages the UV. The UV began its transformation about a year ago and has since opened new businesses such as Zizi Korean Barbecue House, Uncle Chuang’s Bakery, the Spot Sports Bar and Grill, University Pride Bookstore and more. In addition, Piad’Amore, the UV’s first and only Italian restaurant, is expected to open on Valentine’s Day, and NewMark Merrill is expecting a Sprint PCS within the next six months and a Mexican restaurant in the next year. Behind this rapid expansion, according to Soule, is a desire to offer new dining
With student government elections only months away, ASUCR unanimously passed revisions to the Elections Code, such as adding genderinclusive language. In addition, a proposal to extend library hours before finals week was delayed due to bylaw restrictions preventing an allocation of funds required for the extension. After allowing senators to propose changes during last week’s senate meeting, Elections Director Stephanie Rose offered an update to the Elections Code to the chamber. UC doctors’ strike has little impact at UCR

Nearly 125 doctors and dentists participated in a daylong, systemwide Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD) strike on Jan. 27 over alleged illegal behavior by the UC. Although 10 of UCR’s health services’ staff are union members, only one chose to participate in the strike. A systemwide committee on mental health is expected to receive additional funding over the next five years under President Janet Napolitano’s tuition plan, but committee members say that it is not enough to maintain current staffing levels. Releasing a mental health report during last month’s UC Board of Regents meeting, the committee found that UCs fall behind Ivy League colleges and international standards of psychologists per student. In the report, UCR maintained one psychologist per 22,000 students as opposed to the ► SEE HEALTH, PAGE 6
