Gala Celebrating 71 Years of Excellence
2021 E-Journal OCTOBER 2021
A Message from….Thomas Pfundstein Chair of the Board of Directors Thank you for supporting the 2021 Life Without Limits Gala. The Children’s Center provides educational programs to 75+ children with disabilities, using assistive technologies, innovative programs and a wide variety of developmental experiences that encourage each child’s cognitive, language, physical, and social development. Combined with loving and talented staff, The Children’s Center enables Joseph and his peers to live a Life Without Limits. UCP of Long Island has been an extension of my family for the past 17 years. My son, Joseph, attends The Children’s Center. Each day he receives the personalized services that best meet his needs. These programs combined with the Center’s compassionate staff enables each child to thrive. My son has flourished as a result of the outpouring of love, support and encouragement that the staff at The Children’s Center has provided. Joseph has a chance to live a Life Without Limits thanks to UCP of Long Island. 2021 marks UCP’s 71st year as a provider of services to people with disabilities.. I would also like to encourage you to visit UCP’s website, to learn more about our programs and services, www.ucp-li.org. The entire Board of Directors of UCP-LI joins me in thanking all of our supporters for embracing the wonderful programs and services offered by United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island. Please also allow me to thank my fellow Board Members for their tireless commitment. Finally THANK YOU for joining us this evening. You have played a significant part in helping to create a Life Without Limits for people with disabilities and we are so grateful. I would also like to express our thanks to our 2021 Life Without Limits Gala Sponsors: American Portfolios Financial Services, Corporate Synergies, Dime Community Bank, The Levine Family, Mr. Lawrence Levy & Ms. Freda Wagner, Medford Chemists, M&T Bank, People’s United Bank, Professional Group Plans, and Sterling National Bank.

A Message from…. Colleen Crispino, President & CEO
I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your tireless support of the work we do every day at UCP-LI. You truly help us support children and adults with disabilities to pursue a Life Without Limits. In my time at the helm of this amazing organization, I have come to realize two profound things about UCP-LI. First, the services we provide are vitally important and are more critical now than ever before. Second, our staff are incredibly resilient and committed to UCP-LI’s mission. The children and adults with disabilities we serve have goals and dreams and rely on our services to live their best life. We will not let them down. We are thankful that we are once again able to join together to raise critically needed funds. Please visit our Facebook page to see all the reasons you should be extremely proud to be a supporter of UCP-LI: (https://www.facebook.com/UCPofLongIsland/) Your generosity helps us to enhance our services and face the challenges today and in our future. Please visit our website, www.ucp-li.org, to make a donation to help us reach our goal. I would like to extend our thanks to all of our 2021 Life Without Limits sponsors. A very special thank you to our major sponsors: American Portfolios, Corporate Synergies. Dime Community Bank, The Levy Family, Medford Chemists, M&T Bank, People’s United Bank, Preemo Productions and Sterling National Bank for their continuing and steadfast support. UCP’s Life Without Limits Gala
UCP’s annual LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS Gala is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the many talents of the individuals in UCP’s Adult Day Programs. Artwork by the individuals in our programs is everywhere at our Gala, beginning with the invitation and ending with the hand-painted Centerpieces that you see at your tables this evening. Individuals in UCP’s Brushstrokes Program and in all of our Day Programs look forward to the opportunity to share their artistic accomplishments and enjoy making a sale! Every year we share their artwork at UCP-LI Special Events. We are also sharing their beautiful paintings here in our E-Journal. If you are interested in purchasing a painting, please give us a call: 631-232-0015. Thank you to the men and women in UCP’s Adult Day Programs for making our world a more beautiful place!
“A Beacon of Light After the Storm” Painting by
Amanda L
Love and peace are themes often found in Amanda’s work. Since starting to paint with the Brushstrokes art program, Amanda has incorporated hearts, peace signs and flowers into her work. Amanda has experimented with Graffiti art but has since found a passion in painting psychedelic art, a type of iconic art which took root in the 1960’s. Amanda likes to paint VW buses and flowers. Her art mirrors her attitude towards others/life. She is a caring and kind individual who likes to cheer others up and knows not to take things/life too seriously. Someone unfamiliar with Amanda might confuse her for a flower child of the 60’s if they had only seen her art and not met her.
“Venice in Spring” Painting by Brian G.
Brian began attending UCP-LI’s Brushstrokes program in Spring of 2019. A few years ago he started painting Disney paintings for his niece, an activity he enjoyed. Since participating in Brushstrokes, he has ‘branched out” and started painting landscapes. Brian finds painting relaxing and was very excited to sell his first piece last summer. Brian’s “Cabin by the River” is the featured painting for our 2020 Online Gala Campaign and another recent work, “Energy” is for sale in the Gala Campaign Silent Auction.
“Purple
Mountain”
By Michelle S.
Michelle is a friendly young woman who enjoys music and musicals. Michelle is also an avid painter in the Brushstrokes Art Program. Michelle has been a participant of UCP of Long Island for twelve years. She has been painting for over six years. Michelle loves to paint flowers and birds and she mostly uses acrylic paints. She is experimenting with watercolors and is currently trying her hand at impressionism. Michelle is a social butterfly and takes part in The Sensations, as well as the Red Cross Volunteer Support Group. Painting leaves her relaxed and is her favorite activity.
“Two of a Kind” by Lowell B.
Lowell is a visual artist, a singer and a songwriter. While Lowell began painting and drawing later in life, he has quickly become prolific in his craft, citing Escher, Kandinsky and Picasso as influences (Picasso is his favorite). Lowell also credits his grandfather, who was an artist. Lowell prefers to work with colored pencils, using a blending technique to create vibrant, colorful pieces. Lowell’s eccentric use of colors and intricate design is a style of art all its own that his peers have dubbed “Lowellism”.
