As we start a new year, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for being a part of United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile. It’s hard to believe that my time working with our area’s disability community began nearly 50 years ago, when I was a counselor at Camp SMILE. It was through that experience with people with disabilities that I found a purpose and a lifelong calling.

It’s been amazing to be a part of UCP’s growth over the last 25 years. We are grateful to be a respected leader in south and central Alabama and the ability to provide necessary services to children and adults with disabilities is a privilege that we take seriously. We are constantly looking at ways to do more to serve people with disabilities and their families.

Last year we expanded our Supported Employment program to include Job Exploration Training for high school students, and we added a parent support to provide a deeper sense of community for the families we serve Our physical and occupational therapists also attended early detection and intervention training for cerebral palsy, a research and evidence-based effort led by UCP National and Cerebral Palsy Foundation We are proud to have enhanced the quality of life for those we serve

This year we are undergoing an intensive and collaborative strategic planning process with the goal to identify how to best serve the disability community. We will continue quality services but it’s not something we can do alone. We are thankful for the financial support that we have received throughout the years. Now, more than ever, we hope to bring everyone together to create lives without limits.

If you’re interested in being a part of UCP, please take a moment to visit our website at ucpmobile.org and see what a difference we can make together.

OurCommitmenttoEarlyDetection andInterventionforCerebralPalsy

UCP of Mobile is proudly participating in the Early Detection and Intervention (EDI) Collaborative, organized by UCP National and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. We are one of an exclusive collective of seven affiliates who provide “early as possible” detection and intervention of cerebral palsy (CP). Pictured are UCP of Mobile Occupational Therapists Alisa Noonan and Sarah Loukou.

Through outreach to pediatric healthcare providers, the EDI Collaborative’s goal is to lower the age of CP diagnosis from the current national average. This will, in turn, lead to earlier intervention possibilities and better long term outcomes for children diagnosed with CP.

The EDI Collaborative is a group of physicians, occupational therapists and physical therapists A major component of the Collaborative’s efforts is training in a care pathway using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Exam (HINE)

At the 2023 Early Intervention and Preschool Conference, a training for the HINE Assessment was provided to the service providers in attendance, led by Valerie Pieraccini, cochair of UCP National’s Research Committee.

CampSMILE2023: OutofThisWorld!

In 2023, Camp SMILE once again hosted 4 weeks of traditional summer camp activities for children and adults with disabilities Campers enjoyed a week of unforgettable fun while their parents and/or caregivers enjoyed a much needed break.

The theme for 2023's camp was Space Adventure, meaning our campers enjoyed plenty of astronomical activities. And that’s along with horseback riding, swimming, arts & crafts, games, talent shows, and much more! Camp SMILE also hosted a fall Respite Weekend for teens and adults and a Family Weekend in the spring. Overall, Camp SMILE served 300 campers in 2023.

Camp SMILE was also chosen by Lagniappe readers as the Mobile area’s “Best Summer Camp!”
