Our Student Interns

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life would like to On Wednesday, August 29 UConn’s Greek community introduce its three interns for the Fall 2012 semester. hosted its annual Go Greek! BBQ. Chapters from all four councils were in attendance to speak to the student body about the benefits of joining our Greek Community. Each organization had its own booth where they displayed photos and information about their chapter. th

BBQ, the Greek Community hosted the Go Greek! Info Session for all students interested in joining Greek Life. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, along with Greek leaders representing all four councils, gave an informative presentation for anyone looking to learn more about our community.

Gregory Brennan, Zeta Beta Tau, is a senior studying Physiology and Neurobiology. It is his first semester as a student intern in the office.

Kaitlin Latham, Pi Beta Phi, is a senior double majoring in Biological Sciences and Anthropology. It is her third semester as a student intern in the office.

Jonathan Caez, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated, is a senior studying political science. It is his fifth semester as a student intern in the office.

Consultants representing the organization are already on campus preparing to recruit new members once Panhellenic Recruitment ends. The Discovery Leadership Program is looking for outstanding 1st and 2nd year students who have demonstrated leadership potential and a desire to explore new opportunities at UConn.

This leadership development program is immersive, self-reflective, experiential, and team based. Past experiences have included special guest speakers, outdoor adventures, interactive workshops and much more! The Student Leadership Challenge is looking for engaged student leaders who are looking to further develop their leadership potential and impact change within their organizations or communities. This leadership development program is based on the Five Exemplary Practices of Student Leadership, as created by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner- Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others, and Encourage the Heart. GREEK NIGHT with UCONN Volleyball!

Friday, September 14th at 7:00pm UCONN vs. HARVARD Enter for a chance to scrimmage against other Greeks at halftime! Please have one person from your chapter contact marketing@uconn.edu with a list of attendees who want to participate. Free T-shirts for the first 100 Greeks! Enter to win cool prizes, autographs and participate in a meet-and -greet session post-game! You don’t want to miss this!

Suicide Prevention Week (SPW) is Monday, September 17th to Saturday, September 22nd All Week: Stop by Fairfield Way to view the “Field of Memory” and personalize a ‘Be Aware. Show You Care’ flag to show your support and awareness.

Monday, September 17th: Stop by the SU Theater at 7:00pm to enjoy Christina Wong’s performance of Wong Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Following the performance will be a reception in the Asian American Cultural Center at 8:30pm.

Tuesday, September 18th: Stop by Wilson A112 in South Campus at 6:00pm for a viewing of The Bridge, a documentary exploring the world’s most popular suicide destination: The Golden Gate Bridge.

Wednesday, September 19th: A memorial service and candlelight ceremony will be held at the Student Union Mall from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

Thursday, September 20th: Stop by the African American Cultural Center from 5:30pm-7:30pm for a riveting talk entitled “My Story and What Can We Do To Help?”

Friday, September 21st: Stop by the Asian American Cultural Center at 6:00pm for a viewing of Tie A Yellow Ribbon, a film about suicide in AsianAmerican Women.

National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) is Monday, September 24 to Friday, September 28 Monday, September 24: Stop by the Student Union to sign our UConn Greek “Hazing Hurts…Take a Stand” banner and pick up some anti-hazing goodies. Can’t make it out on Monday? Don’t worry we will be out in the Student Union each day this week thru Thu. Tuesday, September 25: New members are encouraged to attend a documentary viewing and discussion in the Classroom Building 101 at 5:00pm.

Wednesday, September 26: Each of our Greek Councils will sponsor council-specific events. Keep an ear for that information as they finalize their plans.

Thursday, September 27: Risk management officers from each chapter are invited to attend the “Hazing Hurts…Take a Stand” Roundtable in the Student Union from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.

Friday, September 28: Take the Red Out! Wear red shirts today in support of NHPW and hazing awareness. Also, look for the signed UConn Greek “Hazing Hurts…Take a Stand” banner hanging above Union Street Market.

Senior Spotlight Within our Greek Community, Bryant is well involved. He serves as the VP of Communications for our council, is a member of Order of Omega and was recently initiated as the first member of IGC to get inducted into the UConn Chapter of the Fraternal Values Society. When needed by his chapter, Bryant is always willing to step up and "take the bull by its horns". He has served multiple roles within the chapter that have led to changes in academic programs, recruitment efforts and philanthropic opportunities. He represented his chapter, along with other chapter members, at L.A.U.’s National convention in order to develop himself as a leader and gain more knowledge as to how he can leave his chapter in the best condition once he graduates. Since he has been Greek, Bryant has been able to receive a 3.0 or better every semester and had the highest GPA last semester out of all members in the chapter. Bryant balances the constant realization of the Metas (Goals) in his everyday life and his school involvement outside L.A.U. His involvement towards L.A.U. transcends both chapter and national contributions. He is a constant support for national initiatives, such as the programing committee, creating marketing strategies for the N.E.C. to use. He is always looking to better himself and is always willing to do all it takes to make the chapter better. He has left an everlasting impact on his chapter and his work ultimately leads to the success of not only our brotherhood, but the community. Given the fact that the Bryant is in his last year here at the University, he shows no signs of decrease in his involvement with the chapter and the Greek Community. Given his recent accomplishment and acceptance of a full-time offer to join Travelers Insurance upon graduation, Bryant is perfect example of a true scholar, professional and Greek Leader.

Greek of the Month Leopoldo is the newest member of our chapter, crossing in Spring 2012. He continues to show that he is happy to be a part of the Greek community here at UConn. Leopoldo demonstrates leadership by serving on our executive board and he takes initiative to begin planning of our events. He is focused and encourages the chapter to focus on the task at hand, too. Nationally, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. requires community service hours; Leo came back to school with his hours completed and has also made strides to increase the requirement for our UConn chapter. He consistently shows that he is willing to go the extra mile to help brothers, that he loves to be a part of our organization, and that he is deserving of being recognized as the Greek of the Month.

We are a non-denominational movement of Greeks who experience God and change the world. We are about having a real relationship with God, and out of that, making an impact in our chapters, the Greek system, UConn, our country and the world. We actively engage ourselves in Bible studies, spiritual discussions, prayer, and social events such as the InterVarsity Greek Conference at the Poconos taking place on November 9th -11th. Furthermore, we participate in various community service and missions throughout the year. In fact, THIS SATURDAY, September 15th, We are having a group of students going to Hartford from 10 AM – 4 PM to do a painting project and another group volunteering at the Special Olympics from 1 PM – 7 PM. Congratulations to all seven of our UConn Panhellenic chapters on an absolutely amazing recruitment!!! We are so proud to welcome 316 new members to our outstanding Panhellenic community! The Panhellenic Council would like to thank each and every one of our recruitment counselors and directors on the Recruitment Management Team 2012 for all their hard work and dedication to the recruitment process this fall. We would also like to wish Phi Sigma Rho and Gamma Phi Beta the best of luck with their recruitment this fall.

Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) Over the Summer, many of our students attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI). “UIFI is a five day institute that brings together fraternity men and sorority women from across North America to create opportunities to explore, define, and enhance their leadership skills, personal awareness, commitment to their fraternity or sorority, and grow to expect values based action from themselves and those they lead (www.nicindy.org).” Congratulations to all in our community who interned or received scholarships from councils, chapters, headquarters, or paid their own way to attend:

Family Weekend: OFSL Wants to Meet Your Mom and Dad! During Family Weekend, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will be hosting a Family Reception in the Husky Village Gazebo on Saturday, September 22, from 1:30-3:00pm.

This is the perfect opportunity for your family to get a chance to learn more about what fraternity and sorority life at UConn is all about. Not only will families get to speak with OFSL staff members, but they will also be able to meet various chapter presidents and council officers. We are excited to share with your family the accomplishments of your chapter and answer any questions about Greek membership that they might have.

At the reception, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will be giving out two awards to our students’ family members. The first is for a family member who is a fraternity or sorority alumni who lives their organization’s values on a regular basis. The second is for a family member, who is not a fraternity or sorority alumni, who has been supportive of your Greek experience. This is an excellent way to say thank you to that special family member. Nominations are due by September 20, 2012 at 5:00pm. Please visit http://goo.gl/oqm5G to apply.

Preparation for HuskyTHON 2013 has already begun! Donor Drive is open, so start registering today! There is a $100 minimum fundraising goal per participant. Additionally, Morale Captain applications are due September 30th, 2012. Please visit huskython.uconn.edu for more information.
