The OFSL Book Club is returning this semester. We will be reading “Inside Greek U. — Fraternities, Sororities, and the Pursuit of Pleasure, Power, and Prestige”

by Alan D. DeSantis, an in-depth look at the lessons that Greek organizations teach their members about gender, drawing on evidence gathered in hundreds of focus-group sessions and personal interviews and from his years of experience as a Greek faculty advisor.

National Hazing Prevention Week 2010 The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UConn will once again be participating in National Hazing Prevention Week this year from September 20-24.

Several events will be held during the week to educate the community about the problems of hazing, but its ultimate goal is to prevent hazing from happening in the first place. The following highlights a few of the scheduled events:

Rick Barnes is one of the nation’s top speakers on alcohol and hazing for athletes and Greeks. 30% attendance is required for Arête.

Lunch will be provided as members of the Greek community at UConn discuss methods to prevent hazing.

A documentary looking at the deaths each year attributed to alcohol and hazing.

Greek of the Month Greek of the Month is a recognition given to members of the Greek community who demonstrate outstanding leadership, service, academic accomplishment and brotherhood/ sisterhood. This individual is a person of good moral character who upholds the values of the Greek Community and the University. Please encourage your members to nominate a fraternity or sorority member every month so the members of the community can be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.

Nominations need to be submitted to Brittney Yancy by the 15th of every month.

Suicide is Preventable.

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students.

Nearly 1,100 suicides are projected to occur on college campuses this year.

18-24 year-olds think about suicide more often than any other age group.

One in twelve U.S. college students has made a suicide plan.

The National College Health Risk Behavior Study found that 11.4% of students seriously consider attempting suicide.

National Pan-Hellenic Council Presents Meet the Greeks: Informational on Sept. 15th, 7:30pm at Konover Auditorium (Dodd Center)

Delta Gamma Anchor Slam: Anchor Slam is a basketball tournament Delta Gamma holds annually to raise money for their philanthropy, Service for Sight and Aid to the Blind. All men and women around campus are invited to play, and form teams of 3 with 1 or 2 substitutes. During the day different teams compete against each other based off a bracket previously assembled, and a champion is determined. Each team has their own personal DG coaches who will provide water and keep score. The winning teams will be presented trophies at the end of the tournament.

September 14, 2010 Attention New Members!

Order of Omega will be having their Greek 101 program Tuesday, September 14, 2010 7—9:00 PM, Schenker, 55.

UNITE September 15, 2010 Looking for New Panhellenic Members!

The ladies of UNITE will be having their first Meeting Wednesday, September 15, 2010 5—6:00 PM, SU 303.

1st Annual GAMMA Pizza Competition Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 6—9:00 PM Husky Village GAMMA will have various pizza available to Greek students to taste test in Husky Village. All boxes will be covered so participants will not know which pizza they are trying. Each participant will pay $2 to try a small portion of each pizza and then will receive a ticket to place in a box in front of the pizza they like best. At the conclusion of the event, GAMMA will tally which pizza received the most votes, and money raised will go, in part, to a plaque reading "Voted Greek's Best Pizza." The remainder of the raised funds will go to fund GAMMA educational programming and supplies.
