National Hazing Prevention Week The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UConn will once again be participating in National Hazing Prevention Week this year from September 21-25. Several events will be held during the week to educate the community about the problems of hazing, but its ultimate goal is to prevent hazing from happening in the first place. The following highlights a few of the scheduled events:

Open forum to discuss hazing. Lunch will be provided.

QPR for Greeks to be Held During Suicide Prevention Week As part of Suicide Prevention Week, there will be a QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) session for fraternity and sorority members on September 16th, Wednesday, in Konover at 5PM.

Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds who will speak on 9/15 at 7:00p.m. in Jorgensen, and Concert for Causes on 9/20.

Nearly 1,100 suicides are projected to occur on college campuses this year. 18-24 year-olds think about suicide more often than any other age group. One in twelve U.S. college students has made a suicide plan. The National College Health Risk Behavior Study found that 11.4% of students seriously consider attempting suicide.

Join the OFSL Book Club
OFSL Welcomes Two New Graduate Assistants
This semester OFSL will be sponsoring a book club. We will be reading “Goat: A Memoir” by Brad Land. It is based on a true story of a man who attended Clemson University and was hazed while pledging Kappa Sigma.
Greg Fink and Crystel Maldonado are the two new graduate assistants who will be working in the Office of Fraternity Life. They will be replacing the last GAs Kendra Darigan and Kevin Lobdell who graduated from the HESA masters program in May 2009.
In honor of National Hazing Prevention Week, our first meeting will be September 23rd from 12:00pm-1:30pm in SU 320. There will be 2 other meetings after that. The dates are Wednesday, October 21st and Wednesday, November 18th, also from 12:00pm-1:30pm in SU 316. The first 17 students to sign up will receive a copy of the book for free. Check out Greg and Crystel’s bios below: Greg Fink serves as a Graduate Assistant for Fraternity and Sorority Life where he advises the Multicultural Greek Council, Huskython, and Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol. Greg is from San Antonio and graduated in 2008 from Texas A&M University with a major in Human Resources Development and a minor in Business Administration. After graduation, Greg worked with Texas A&M’s Student Activities Recognition Department as its Program Advisor helping to recognize over 800 student organizations. Currently, he is a graduate student in UConn’s Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) Masters program. Crystel Maldonado serves as a Graduate Assistant for Fraternity and Sorority Life where she advices the Panhellenic Council, Order of Omega and the Greek Week Management Team. Crystel graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2009 with a bachelor in Psychology. She is currently enrolled in UConn’s Higher Education and Student Affairs Masters program. Crystel is a member of Beta Kappa Sigma Black and Latina Sorority Inc. and will be serving as the National Internal Vice President.
Career Club Connections to Work with OFSL Career Services is thrilled to announce that the department will be collaborating with the OFSL beginning this fall through a program called Career Club Connections (CCC). This organization will work closely with fraternity/sorority members to plan career related workshops and presentations to enhance job preparation knowledge for chapter members. The goal of CCC is to organize events that will meet the topical needs of the community, such as:
Lindsey Cunningham, a Career Resource Assistant at Career Services, will be the CCC liaison. Lindsey is a fifth semester journalism major and has worked at Career Services since January. In the office she is responsible for critiquing resumes and interviewing students through the mock interview program. Last spring she planned the Careers in Sports Speaker Series where students gained career advice from professionals in the field of athletics.
Lindsey is very excited to share her job preparation knowledge with the members of the Greek community! She will keep chapters informed of upcoming CCC and Career Services events and workshops by communicating with them regularly via email. She also plans to attend President’s

Forums to help coordinate events, listen to suggestions, and to keep the community up to date with valuable opportunities at Career Services. A letter from the Coordinator To Members of the Greek Community, My name is Lauren Moore and I am the 2009 World AIDS Week Coordinator for the Health Education Office. I am contacting you to ask for your participation in World AIDS Week this year. Every year the Health Education Office hosts various events, such as Art4AIDS and the HIV/AIDS Vigil, during World AIDS Week. In addition to the events taking place during the week, the Sexperts, a peer education group based out of the Health Education Office, raises money for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Connecticut. The Sexperts have raised money for the Camp the past three years. This Camp offers a free summer session for children living with HIV/AIDS. All of the money raised during World AIDS Week goes towards benefiting the camp, specifically targeting this summer session. For more information on the Camp, visit www.holeinthewallgang.org. Raising money to help people living with HIV/AIDS is an extremely rewarding experience. Here at UConn we sometimes forget the impact this disease has on individuals, communities and the world. We see the effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa and other foreign countries through the medial, but we rarely envision this to be a problem or concern right here in Connecticut or in the Unites States. This is a chance to help children battling HIV/AIDS only twenty minutes from the UConn campus. I am inviting the Greek Community to be a part of this wonderful fundraising experience. There will be a campus wide fundraising competition among the various student organizations on campus. Each fraternity or sorority has the opportunity to fundraise for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, or another HIV/AIDS based organization of their choice. The organization that raises the most money will be announced at the HIV/AIDS Vigil and presented with certificates. This organization will also have a plaque with their name on it in the Health Education Office. In addition they will be recognized on the Health Education website. The Health Education Office realizes that some organizations are larger than others, so the winner of the competition will be the group that raises the most money per person in the group. A participant is anyone who is involved in World AIDS Week in any way, not only participants that raise funds for the cause. Our main goal is to raise as much money as possible for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Each organization can access the registration form and donation log for fundraising by going to the Health Education website (www.healthed.uconn.edu). The name of the organization that each Fraternity or Sorority is fundraising for must be included on the donation log. All Greek organizations are responsible for collecting and counting the amount of money raised. The final amount along with the number of all participants and the name of the organization the money was donated to must be emailed to HealthEd@uconn.edu. All due dates are posted on the Health Education website. In addition to fundraising, all members of the Greek Community are invited to attend all of the events of World AIDS Week. KPL’s National Philanthropy to Come on Campus Kappa Phi Lambda, the only Asian American interest sorority on campus, has teamed up with the Asian American Cultural Center to invite Miriam Yeung, the executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) to come speak on campus about APA women's issues. NAPAWF is also Kappa Phi Lambda’s national philanthropy organization.
