October 20th-October 31st: Visit the Student Union Lobby to view the banners on display. The winners of the banner contest will be announced on October 29th. October 22nd/October 28th: This year, the Alma Mater Sing will host an elimination round on the 22nd and a final round on the 28th. The winner of the Alma Mater Sing will sing at the pre-game of the Homecoming Football game on November 1st. October 24th: Bring your chalked cars to Husky Village W Lot from 3pm-5pm to earn some extra points for your organization’s team! October 26th: Join your fellow Huskies as we kick off Homecoming week with the parade through campus. October 29th: Head on down to Gampel Pavilion to watch organizations complete for first place in this year’s Lip Sync!
Gamma Phi Beta’s 2nd Annual Crescent Classic Flag Football Tournament Gamma Phi Beta will be hosting their 2nd annual Crescent Classic flag football tournament on Sunday, October 19. All proceeds of this event go towards one of their philanthropic partners, Girls on the Run. ALPHA PHIFA Alpha Phi is so excited to introduce our new philanthropy Alpha Phifa! Yes it's going to be as fun as it sounds! Join the lovely sisters of Alpha Phi, play some soccer and help us raise money for an amazing cause! The event is Sunday, October 12th , anyone can make a team!. Proceeds go to Alpha Phi Foundation which supports women's cardiac care, so come Kick It with Alpha Phi! Contact us if you have any questions!
RAICES Re-cap and Sigma Spell Off Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. holds their annual week of events in September called RAICES. RAICES is a week-long project with different events every day. Every chapter participates to promote and celebrate Latino heritage and culture. Every year the RAICES theme changes, this year for 2014 the theme was, “Grita! Unleashing Our Voices through the Arts”. The Alpha Omicron chapter here at UCONN, participated from September 22nd to September 27th helping UCONN students express themselves through creativity. Some of their events included a creative writing workshop featuring Poetic Release, an art tour of the Benton museum, and a group gathering to paint one of the spirt rocks on campus. The Hermanas not only care about interacting with the UCONN students, and providing community service to those in need, they also help to raise money for their sorority’s philanthropy-literacy. On October 16nd at 7:00pm in the Ballroom the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. will be hosting another big event called Sigma Spell Off. This event focuses on literacy and uniting Greeks from different councils to join in a fun and intense spelling bee. All proceeds will go toward Literacy Initiatives. So come out and support them as they raise money for an amazing cause.
2nd Annual Mr. Burgundy and Grey Scholarship Pageant The Kappa Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated will be hosting our second annual Mr. Burgundy and Grey Scholarship Pageant! The pageant is dedicated to raising money for our “Paving the Way” scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a female high school graduate in either the New Haven, Hartford, and Bridgeport district. This scholarship was created to assist the next generation of women in their pursuit of higher education. Please help us sponsor a student’s dream of attending higher education by participating in Lambda Theta Alpha’s second annual Mr. Burgundy and Grey pageant. We are looking for male candidates to participate and the winner takes home $200! We are having an information session discussing the pageant in more detail on October 14, 2014 in the Student Union at 7pm. PDY Bubble Tea and Dimes for Diamonds The brothers of Pi Delta Psi were very excited to sell bubble tea throughout the first month of school. What is bubble tea? Bubble tea is a chilled fruit flavored infused tea that is complimented by sweet tapioca bubbles. The flavors we sold ranged from strawberry to mango and two exclusive flavors that aren't sold anywhere else: Acai Berry and Citrus Fruit Punch. Patrons lined our table for a taste of this delicious treat and we hope to sell again next semester when the weather becomes warmer! Also, please be on the look-out for one of our signature philanthropy events: Dimes for Diamonds which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday October 9 @ Fairfield Way 1-4pm. Make a bro do various styles of push ups by donating to BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS! More information will be given out shortly.
HUSKYTHON 2015 Miracle Walk 2014 HuskyTHON, New England’s largest student-run philanthropy, is back with their annual kickoff event to support Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Miracle Walk will be on Saturday, October 18th in the Student Union Theater. The first show will be at 11:30am and the second show will be at 1:30pm. For the first time ever, we are excited to have children and families in CT Children’s community be involved in this event. This year, teams of all sizes are encouraged to sign up and strut their stuff down the runway! Small teams can have 10 models, medium teams can have 25 models, and large teams can have 40 or more models! Teams can put their creativity to the test and come up with their own “theme” to model. Whether it be decades, seasons, sports teams, holidays, or more, participants can showcase their model behavior and attitude--and have fun--while raising funds to support such an incredible cause. If your organization is interested in participating in Miracle Walk 2014, please send a representative to the first Modeling Captain Meeting on Wednesday, October 1st at 8pm in Family Studies 202. The role of a Modeling Captain is to gather information and relay it back to your team’s models. We will have tables set up for vendors, so if you or someone you know is a campus representative for a company, please contact Lauren Weaver at weaver@huskython.org or Joe Rosano at rosano@huskython.org
Domestic Violence Awareness Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Nu Theta Chapter will be hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness program on Monday, October 27th at 7PM featuring Sil Lai Abrams. Sil Lai Abrams is a NABJ award-winning New York City based writer, inspirational speaker, domestic violence awareness activist, and relationship expert for the online version of EBONY magazine. The presentation, Silent No More: 9 Steps You Can Take to End Dating Violence aims to start the conversation about a very important topic. We hope to see you there as we try to raise awareness about the issue of Domestic Violence for our Campus Community! Pi Kappa Alpha Dream Girl Pageant and “Pie a Pike” The Brothers of The Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) Fraternity at The University of Connecticut have two very important philanthropy events planned for the end of September and the beginning of October. The first event that has been planned will be the Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) Dream Girl Pageant that will take place on September 30th at 6:00PM in the Student Union Theater to raise money for Soldiers Angels. This event is Pi Kappa Alpha’s biggest annual event and involves the multiple sororities here at UConn nominating one of their sisters to compete for Dream Girl. The pageant helps raise money for Soldiers Angels, a charity organization that focuses on providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Military and their families as well as military veterans in the forms of care packages, letters and anything else they can do to help these brave Americans and their families. Donations to Soldiers angels can be made through their website which link is provided below. The second event The Brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) have planned for October is a new one and will be dedicated to not only the President of Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) but also the President of the Undergraduate Student Government here at UConn; Mark Sargent. On June 11th, 2014 Mark was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he is currently undergoing treatment and is expected to return back to excellent health in due time. That is why on October 1 st the Brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) have decided to host a fundraising event in order to help raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in the form of “Pie A Pike”. The event will take from 10:00AM-3:00PM on Fairfield way and will consist of allowing anyone to come up, pay $5 to either smash a plate of whipped cream or throw three balls to dunk either their favorite or least favorite brother of Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike). All proceeds will be donated to research at The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in hopes of finding a cure for these diseases; one can also make a donation to the charity at the link provided below. http://soldiersangels.org/ http://www.lls.org/
Step up to the plate and channel Derek Jeter in the quest to take home the Golden Bat! Kappa Alpha Theta is excited to announce the return of KATs & Bats, their annual softball tournament that raises funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The tournament will take place on October 5th at the baseball fields behind E.O. Smith High School. Registration will open at 10:00am and the opening pitch will be at 10:30am. And who doesn’t love free stuff?! We are excited to have vendors from Vineyard Vines, Coca-Cola, Muscle Milk, Southern Tide, Country Club Prep, High Cotton and more give out some goodies for all those who attend the tournament! Any star athlete needs fuel, so we will be providing bagels, pizza, and Insomnia Cookies (in no particular order!) And what's a tournament without prizes? Give it your all for the chance to win gift cards from Hungry Huskies, Sweet Emotions, Moes, and way more! KATs & Bats has been Theta’s signature philanthropy for quite some time, but we are excited to switch things up and add a new feature to the tournament….a dunk tank! For a donation, you will have the opportunity to dunk a sister of Theta (so you better start working on your curveball!) Last day of registration is October 3rd and your organization can submit as many teams as you want! It is $50 for a team of 9 players, and any additional team is $30. CASA is Theta’s national philanthropy and is an incredible organization that supports court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children in order to provide them with a safe and healthy environment in permanent homes. Fellow Greeks and Huskies: Join Alpha Kappa Lambda on November 2nd, in its Fall fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project! The 5K Pumpkin Run will begin at 10:45 a.m. on Fairfield Way (in the center of campus), so make sure to get there at least 15 minutes before to grab a spot in the race. There will be prizes for top place finishers and gifts for all participants. For registration information contact Jacob.Mabee@uconn.edu. All proceeds are to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, so come out and show your support for the Veterans and Troops! See you there!
Senior Spotlight Anthony Reid, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Anthony has been a leader in his organization and in the National Pan-Hellenic Council since he joined Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. in Spring 2011. He's held numerous position on his chapter's eboard as well as the NPHC eboard, including current president and vice president respectively. Anthony also exemplifies a model Greek brother to the entire Greek community. Whether it's lending an ear to listen, supporting fellow Greeks, or just being a good friend, Anthony is brotherly in every aspect of the term. His commitment, leadership, and willingness to put in work for Iota Phi Theta and NPHC is unparalleled. I think more Greeks should strive to follow in Anthony's footsteps!

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life held info sessions on this years Greek Alternative Breaks on 09/30 and 09/31. Interested in applying? The application for the trip to Jamaica is live and will be due by Wednesday, Oct. 8th. The Jamaica trip will take place from January 3—10, 2015. The application for the spring trip (Indiana or Washington D.C.—TBA) will be due by Wednesday, Nov. 5th. The spring trip will take place from March 14—21, 2015. What to expect:
Alternative breaks are service-learning experiences designed to heighten participants’ awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them for lifelong service action.
Each trip integrates service, reflection and education.
Alternative Breaks give students an opportunity to meet new people, gain new experiences and to step away from traditional learning and living.
Pre-trip meetings will be held in the weeks leading up to the trips to help build community among participants and prepare for the experience.

ZBT: New Pledge Class and Annual Get on the Ball ZBT has been busy this fall semester as we initiated our largest class to date with 27 brothers in September. Our chapter is assisting these new brothers adjust to college, especially their first wave of exams, by providing a number of resources organized by our academics chairperson, Alex Kelly. We are also looking to get Upsilon class involved with Greek Life and the campus at large as they help us host our annual Get on the Ball event October 13th and 14th. Come sign our giant inflatable ball as we raise awareness and money for our national philanthropy: the Children’s Miracle Network!
