UConn Greeks Celebrate National Hazing Prevention Week!

During the week of September 19th to the 23rd, Greeks gathered from every council in order to raise awareness during National Hazing Prevention Week! Kicking off the week was the National Hazing Prevention Week 2011 Banner Campaign which was a wonderful opportunity for Greeks from all councils to sign a banner pledging themselves to the anti-hazing efforts. This banner is now being displayed in the Student Union for all to see with countless names. On Tuesday night, the National Hazing Prevention Week Committee hosted a Game Night in which Greeks were quizzed and tested on their knowledge on hazing alternatives and policies in a fun and interactive way. The week continued with a Halt Hazing Dinner. Ending the week off was the Anti-Hazing Council Day, where each council presented a different event! All in all, the week was filled with a bunch of fabulous events celebrating the National Hazing Prevention Week. A great many thanks to the National Hazing Prevention Week Committee for putting together such a successful week. It was definitely the best by far!

Beka Sanchez, Kappa Alpha Theta Here is what the nominator had to say: “Beka Sanchez of Kappa Alpha Theta is an outstanding Greek senior! Within her chapter, she currently holds the positions of Risk Manager and an Academic Mentor.

Previously, she has been the Assistant Social Chair and the Music Chair. Beka is in the NEAG School as an elementary education major with a concentration in mathematics. She is an involved member of UConn PIRG, the Teaching Education Students Association, America Reads, the Blood Drive, and the Women’s Center. Beka also volunteers for Paul Newman’s The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and this fall, she is attending the Sickle Cell Family Weekend. During her years at UConn, she has participated in numerous Community Outreach trips, including Chowderfest and the Special Olympics, and she was also an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Last semester, she was crowned TKE’s sweetheart!

Beka is constantly trying to improve the community around her and does anything she can to help. She is truly an excellent member of the Greek community.”

Raul Irizarry, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. Here is what the nominator had to say: “Raul Irizarry exemplifies the meaning of an outstanding Greek senior in every way. As President of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated, Raul has proven to be an invaluable brother of both the chapter and the UConn Greek Community. He embodies the four pillars of Greek life in all aspects of his life. As a leader on campus, Raul is involved with the Men’s Project, Take Back the Night, and various programs for the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center. He is an Urban and Community Studies Major and has proved to be studious with one of the highest member GPA’s of his chapter. He is constantly involving himself with various community service projects in his home city of Hartford, including programs to help encourage high school students to attend college. Raul is selfless, caring, and a truly one-of-a-kind individual. “

2011-2012 Greek Senior Events: Greek Senior Kick Off: Tuesday, October 25, 2010 5:30pm to 7:00pm, Student Union North Lobby Attention SENIORS! Come and celebrate your senior status with other Greek seniors, enjoy some yummy fall fare, and pick up your official Greek Senior T-Shirt. Supplies are limited, so the first seniors in attendance will receive their shirt. You can also grab some information from the Career Services table on resume critiques and practice interviews so you can get into your dream graduate school or land your perfect job!

September 2011: Paige Betancourt, Delta Gamma Here is what the nominator had to say: “Paige Betancourt is our current Vice President of Membership and did a wonderful job in September with recruitment. She stepped up for the occasion and excelled as a leader in our chapter. She was extremely organized, strong, and confident. She knew what she was doing at all times and never questioned it. She also did a wonderful job with keeping the chapter members involved, informed, and included in all recruitment activities. She was an awesome organized and inspirational leader to all the Delta Gamma members.”

Emily Bergan, Kappa Alpha Theta Here is what the nominator had to say: “Emily Bergan is an outstanding member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Within both the Theta and Greek community, she is extremely involved. She is the archivist/historian of Kappa Alpha Theta, documenting and taking pictures of major events that we have as well as making the creative and memorable scrapbooks we showcase year round. Emily attends UNITE meetings regularly in order to improve the lives of college sorority women, and this year is a member of the Scholarship Ad-Hoc committee for Panhellenic.”

October 2011: Gwen Egloff, Alpha Epsilon Phi Here is what the nominator had to say: “Gwen Egloff is one of those outstanding individuals who manages to get an impossible amount of tasks done in a very limited amount of time. Not only does she never miss a deadline, she never fails to follow through with her commitments 100%. There is never a stone left unturned with Gwen—when she accomplishes something, she is thorough and passionate every step of the way. She has always been this way with Alpha Epsilon Phi, first as Public Relations Chair, and now as Vice President of Recruitment. But with Gwen it goes beyond that, she commits herself fully to AEPhi even when not serving as a position. She puts her very best effort into just being a sister and friend.”

Chastity Flores, Lambda Theta Alpha Here is what the nominator had to say: “Chastity Flores is an outstanding member of the academic community and our Greek Life. She strives for perfection but is realistic in what she can handle. However, her efforts to excel do not only apply to her but to every member of our chapter and also our interest group. As our academic chair, Chastity pays special attention to ways in which we as a chapter and individuals can enhance not only our academic standards and grade point averages, but also our community involvement, allowing us to live out our principles and mission every day. Chastity makes our sisterhood very proud with her efforts to develop great leader, carefulness for our academics, and love and pride she has for Lambda Theta Alpha.”

Greek Leadership Team The Greek Leadership Team (GLT) is a group of selected leaders from throughout the Greek community. Together, they serve as peer educators for fraternities and sororities across the four councils.

GLT serve as outside presenters whose education modules can count towards the accreditation for Project ArĂŞte. They are available to chapters, executive boards, committees, roundtables, workshops, and more! October 5th was Launch Day at UConn for the revolutionary new social network Hyphos.com. The website allows users to create and join groups based on their interests at the university. Hyphos at UConn member and fellow Greek, Jonathan CĂĄez, is pictured above tabling in front of the CUE on Launch Day. The new student organization was founded to bring the student body together through the use of Hyphos.com.

Over the summer Kyle Blake, President of Tau Kappa Epsilon, attended the Biennial Tau Kappa Epsilon Conclave in San Antonio Texas. His chapter received a national recognition award for Excellence in Community Service due to their work with the 5k Run here at the University of Connecticut campus as well as their volunteering at Camp Horizons and participation in various other campus wide events. Congratulations and keep up the excellence in community service!

INTD: Introduction to Greek Leadership Peer Instructor Apps. Due on Friday, October 28th, 2011.

Alpha Phi is excited to present our new Fall philanthropy, "Cardiac Arrest." Cardiac Arrest will take place in Fairfield Way on October 19th from 12-1:30. Alpha Phi will be holding a member of each organization "hostage" in Fairfield Way. Penny wars will be taking place during the time of the event, and the winner of the penny wars will be "bailed out." We hope to see all of you there!

UConn Panhellenic will be recognized by the National Panhellenic Conference for winning both the Leadership and Philanthropy Awards on Oct. 15 in Austin, Texas!

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Backpack Relay Run Monday, October 17th, 2011 5:00 PM—8:00 PM, Homer Babbidge Library The event will involve a relay race throughout the entire University of Connecticut (Storrs) campus. It will begin and end in front of Homer Babbidge Library. The participants will be sent off to their relay checkpoints and await for their teammates to come and "hand-off" a new backpack that will act as a baton. The backpack is to be filled with one school supply item at each checkpoint, prior to the runner leaving for the next checkpoint. Sign-ups for the event will begin two weeks prior to the date of the event. Any organization/group can sign up a team of ten participants. The first team to finish the race, while following all of the rules, will be crowned as Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Backpack Relay Run champions!
