UConn will be observing National Fat Talk Free Week from October 18—22. This annual event is sponsored by Delta Delta Delta Sorority to help sorority members and all women establish and maintain a positive body image. Fat Talk Free Week is a national week of observation that encourages women to not talk negatively about their own or others’ bodies. Fat Talk Free Week promotes a healthy ideal, rather than the thin ideal, which is emulated by media, culture and so many women around the world. The healthy ideal focuses on health rather than weight or size. During Fat Talk Free Week, Panhellenic and UNITE will promote this message on the UConn campus. A list of events for the week will soon be announced!
Each month, the Interfraternity Council recognizes individuals who demonstrate either of the four pillars of excellence: Leadership, Service, Academic Accomplishment, and Brotherhood. These fraternity men are featured in the Daily Campus at the end of each month. Individuals will be recognized for either of the 4 honors: Leader of the Month Scholar of the Month Volunteer of the Month Brother of the Month If there is a fraternal member in your chapter that deserves such a recognition, please submit a description of how this member upholds the values of the Fraternity and Sorority Community and the University, and also send a photo to Dimitri Pan at lansen.pan@uconn.edu by the 23rd of each month.

Allison Meese is certainly an outstanding Greek senior. She exemplifies each of the four pillars of Greek Life in a way that few others do. Not only is she the president of Kappa Kappa Gamma but she is also involved with Teach for America and is the cofounder of the Special Events Club on campus. She is a political science and communications double major and does extremely well in both areas. She is an excellent student always attending class and taking detailed notes. Allison takes sisterhood to a higher level than most. She is a caring sister, not only to those in Kappa Kappa Gamma, but to everyone in the Greek community. Finally, Allison is a philanthropic

Kenneth ‘Kaydo’ Dortche: Since the founding of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated at the University of Connecticut, Kaydo has been an integral member of not only his chapter, but to the Greek community as whole. Kaydo consistently and diligently shows the true meaning of brotherhood in every aspect of his daily college career by always offering his help at a moment’s notice. As President of the Multicultural Greek Council and Vice President of his chapter, Kaydo is unequivocally a leader among the Greek community exemplified by his own selflessness and love for others.
Liz Marconi: Liz Marconi of Kappa Alpha Theta is a team leader for Community Service Days at Community Outreach and she volunteers at the UConn hosted Husky Classic Soccer Special Olympics. She is also a member of Alpha Phi Omega (UConn’s Community Service Fraternity). Additionally she traveled to South Africa this summer to take a unique African Field Ecology class offered through the university of Connecticut that exposed her to a whole new culture. Within Greek Life and UConn, Liz Marconi is an inspiration to her sisters for her leadership and commitment to help others in diverse ways.
Missy Korduner serves as the Assistant Director of First Year Experience at Louisiana State University and directly oversees the operations of several other departmental initiatives. Missy has also worked for the University of Connecticut Honors Program. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Master of Arts in Education: Higher Education Student Affairs from the University of Connecticut and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Human Resources Education at Louisiana State University. In addition, Missy volunteers as a Collegiate Regional Programming Specialist for 19 Pi Beta Phi chapters in the northeast. What is a favorite memory you have of your undergraduate Greek experience? My favorite memory is living in the house and serving as chapter president for Pi Beta Phi. Serving as chapter president helped me develop leadership skills and also gave me the opportunity to really leave a lasting impact on my chapter. How did your undergraduate experience help you in your post-college life and work? Seeing as I entered Student Affairs as a career, my undergraduate experience had a HUGE impact on my post-college life and work! Many of the opportunities I’ve been afforded after graduation are because of the connections I made while I was a student leader on campus.

Interested in Alternative Spring Breaks?! Alternative Break and Immersion Programs are service-learning experiences designed to heighten participants’ awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them for lifelong social action. Each weekend or weeklong trip integrates service, reflection and education and focus on topics as varied as poverty, hunger, housing, healthcare, and disaster relief. Trips are offered throughout the year in local and national destinations. Week long trip applications are due November 5th to the Student Activities Community Outreach office. OFSL Book Club The OFSL Book Club is returning this semester. We will be reading “Inside Greek U. — Fraternities, Sororities, and the Pursuit of Pleasure, Power, and Prestige” by Alan D. DeSantis, an in-depth look at the lessons that Greek organizations teach their members about gender, drawing on evidence gathered in hundreds of focus-group sessions and personal interviews and from his years of experience as a Greek faculty advisor.
