Fall Philanthropies Kappa Alpha Theta’s Kats and Bats

Alpha Phi’s Cardiac Arrest On October 2nd, 2009, Alpha Phi held their philanthropy Alpha Phi‘s Cardiac Arrest. All Greek chapters housed in Husky Village were invited to participate in this scavenger hunt event. This philanthropy event collected supplies to benefit Interval House. Interval House is a women‘s shelter located in Hartford, CT. Interval House is a not for profit organization dedicated to providing free and confidential support services to victims of domestic violence. The day turned out to be a lot of fun for all participants, and all for a great cause!

Kappa Alpha Theta will host their annual softball tournament on October 25th at 11am at the EO Smith baseball fields. This softball tournament is open to the entire UCONN campus, Greeks and non-Greeks alike.

There are separate softball tournaments for male and female participants. The cost of registration is $50 for a group of ten people.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to Theta‘s philanthropy, CASA. The sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta at Kats & Bats.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Walks for the Kure Kappa Kappa Gamma hosted their annual breast cancer walk on October 4th. This was their 7th annual breast cancer walk to support Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. The annual walk takes a 5K route around campus, starting and finishing at Fairfield Way. Members of the Greek community, family members and alumni attended this year‘s Walk for the Kure. The sisters of Kappa raised money through donations, Save Second Base T-shirt

sales, as well as Kappa-ccino sales, all for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. The walk was a huge success raising $3500 on Sunday.

Kappa will continue to accept donations until Friday, October 16. If you would like to make a donation, contact victoria.costello@uconn.edu.

Lambda Chi Alpha Clothing Sale The Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha will be soliciting donations for the North American Food Drive. Lambda Chi Alpha's international philanthropic event is a one day food drive to benefit the needy of North America. All food donations will be sent to the Connecticut Food Bank. Attend the Fall Clothing Sale, October 5th-8th on

Upcoming Events University Metanoia: Preventing Violence Against Women The University of Connecticut will be holding a University Metanoia on Preventing Violence Against Women. This tradition began at UCONN in 1970. According to The Daily Campus in October of 1979, a metanoia is a ― concept meaning ‗change of attitude‘‖. This year‘s metanoia will begin on Sunday, October 4, 2009 which

marks the 30 year anniversary of the 1979 University Metanoia on Violence in the Community. All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the week of events beginning on October 4, 2009. Thursday‘s Keynote speaker Tony Porter is an educator and activist in social justice. He has worked to end men‘s violence against women for over twenty years.

A metanoia is a time for campus -wide reflection and engagement with a critical issue. This tradition was introduced to UCONN in 1970.

Greek Life Family Weekend Reception a Great Success!

On Saturday October 3, OFSL hosted the Greek Life Family Weekend Reception at the Student Union. Over thirty students and their families attended the event! Students and family members gathered for great food and company to celebrate the shared accomplishments of our Greek community this past year.

Additionally, many fraternities and sororities and the Husky Village staff hosted BBQs.

On Friday September 25th Kappa Sigma at the University of Connecticut held their 2nd annual Knockout Tournament for Military Heroes. The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has committed to sponsoring the Fisher House Foundation facility planned for Washington, D.C. The Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes" so that America's military families can be together during extended treatment for serious illness or lengthy

IFC Speaker Josh Orendi Josh Orendi is a co-founder and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Phired Up Productions. Phired Up Productions is an education firm providing recruitment services to membership organizations. Josh delivers a fun, demanding style of recruitment training. The purpose of this training

On Thursday, October 8th, from 79 PM Attorney Rasheed Ali Cromwell will be presenting his lecture The Miseducation of the Black Greek. Atty. Rasheed Ali Cromwell is a graduate of North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University and Texas Southern University. He is notable as a consultant in Greek Affairs and Leadership Development. The focus of this lecture is cultural em-

powerment and awareness. Atty.

Cromwell, in addition to his educational and professional endeavors, is the founder and CEO of the Harbour Institute. This company, located outside of Washington, is based on enabling students to excel. Atty. Cromwell is very well researched on National PanHellenic Council fraternities and sororities and has presented at universities across the country,

DG’s AnchorSlam A Slam Dunk On October 20th, Delta Gamma held its annual AnchorSlam Basketball Tournament to benefit the blind. After an exciting day of competition, Sigma Chi won a very heated final game against last year‘s defending champions- Delta Chi, while Kappa Alpha Theta faced Delta Zeta before winning for the second year in a row. The day was a huge success and Delta Gamma raised over $2100.00 for Service for Sight & Aid to the Blind. The sisters of Delta Gamma thank all participants!

Delta Zeta’s Musical Chairs Delta Zeta's Third Annual Musical Chairs Competition was held this year in the Student Union Ballroom on Sunday, September 27th. Over $500 was raised to be donated to the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT, one of Delta Zeta's local philanthropic partners. Many organizations attended to support Delta Zeta and participate. The winner of Musical Chairs this year went to Mischa Goodman of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Congratulations to her and thank you to everyone that participated!

Speaker Travis Apgar for National Hazing Prevention Week In honor of National Hazing Prevention Week, keynote speaker Travis Apgar visited the UConn campus on September 24, 2009 to speak on the issues of hazing. Travis is the Robert G. Engel Associate Dean of Students at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Travis has served on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association since 2001. He is active in the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and the Association for Student Conduct Administration. Travis, a first generation college student, told his story of his different hazing experiences as a member of a football team as well as during his pledging experience for his fraternity. He spoke of the hidden harm that he experienced and how it effected him later in his life. By encouraging that people discuss the issue of hazing and break out of pat-

terns of ―tradition‖ Travis certainly inspired the crowd. Travis‘ story was heartfelt and sincere. His honesty and bravery were an inspiration and definitely showed our community the hidden harm of hazing.

MLK T-shirt Design Contest!

Submissions should reflect the 2010 theme, “Coalition Building: The Key to Advancing the Dream.”

The winning submission will be used for the 2010 event, and the winning designer will receive ten of the shirts. The event will occur on Monday January 18, 2010 in the afternoon in the Student Union, more information to come soon.
