LaKeya Francis of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Here is what the nominator had to say: “LaKeya Francis is an outstanding Greek senior for more reasons than one. Very involved in campus, LaKeya finds time for her classes and homework as well as juggling two Presidential roles within her sorority as well as for Visible Women, a women's organization that works to bring awareness about the issues that minority women face in day to day life. She works in the Community Outreach office as a student assistant to the site manager of Jumpstart. She has been an Orientation Leader, FYE mentor, and a Jumpstart Team Leader. LaKeya works hard each day to make sure she gets best the experience she can while she is here at the University. LaKeya has demonstrated unity within the Greek community by reaching out to meet members of other chapters.

Her involvement in Greek life has been phenomenal since she joined the community in Fall 2010.

Serving as Vice President and Program Chair of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) has also allowed her to show her creative side and event planning skills. LaKeya is graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts in English and is looking forward to pursuing a graduate program in the field of Higher Education and Student Affairs!”

Maria McCool of Alpha Phi

Here is what the nominator had to say: “Maria McCool is an outstanding Greek senior because

she has gone above and beyond for her chapter and her sisters and she does it all with an enthusiastic nature and a smile. Due to unfortunate circumstances, our last elected President could not finish her term and Maria was elected into Presidency mid-way though the Spring semester. As a senior myself, I have gotten to see first-hand how much she really stepped up for our chapter. She has devoted a lot of time and effort to learning and familiarizing herself with her position and responsibilities as President. Despite giving up countless hours for her new position, Maria still makes time for her academics, job and family. She is a role-model for our newly initiated sisters as well as an invaluable staple within our chapter, and has nothing, but the utmost respect for our Greek community. Maria is an amazing woman and deserves to have her efforts recognized on a campus-wide level.”

Lacey Mazzilli of Kappa Kappa Gamma

Here is what the nominator had to say: “Lacey is an active sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma, a UConn cheerleader, and Captain of the UConn Cheerleading Team. She is a role model to everyone here at UConn because she is able to juggle her involvement in Kappa, her cheerleading responsibilities, her participation in Homecoming and HuskyTHON events along with her academics. Lacey is my sister and I am proud to express all of her accomplishments. She has traveled all over the country to Final Fours, Big East Tournaments, Elite 8's, Sweet 16's and the 2011 BCS Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. She has also volunteered for many non-profit organizations including Ride to Recovery for war victims and earned countless honors within Kappa. Not only that but Lacey successfully manages her academics as a Communications major with a minor in Business earning a 3.2 GPA. This past summer she interned for one of the Real Housewives of New York City, getting one step closer to living her dream in the big city! She also has her own entertainment based television show on UCTV called "What's Up UConn" which shines light on both the celebrity and UConn buzz.”

Mallory Paschich of Kappa Alpha Theta Here is what the nominator had to say: “Mallory Paschich of Kappa Alpha Theta is truly an amazing Greek senior. As an accounting major, she is the Vice President of Finance for our sorority, overseeing all expenses for our chapter. In past years, she has also served as the Scholarship Chairman. She has also made significant contributions as the Junior Panhellenic President and a Greek Emerging Leader. In addition she has received many scholarships and honors across campus, including making the Dean‟s list for four semesters straight. Mallory has been employed by the Lodewick Visitor‟s Center as a campus tour guide, as well holding a plethora of other jobs on campus. Mallory has volunteered her time and fundraising abilities in many golf tournaments over the years, has served as a tutor for children, and volunteered on an alternative spring break to Washington, D.C. As a senior, she has a secured job after graduation as a CPA. Mallory‟s ambition and great heart make her an outstanding senior within the Greek community.”

CALL FOR PROGRAMS The University of Connecticut Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life has opened its call for programs for the Spring 2012 Greek Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC). The conference will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in the Student Union. The theme for this year‟s conference is ―Discover Your Direction.‖ The conference will be attended by over 100 emerging leaders, and will consist mostly of freshmen and sophomores. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to submit a program proposal to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to present a workshop for the conference.

Goals of ELC 2012: Explore a variety of approaches to leadership; Gain new leadership skills; Improve existing leadership skills; Apply leadership skills to their membership and involvement in Greek Life; Network with other emerging leaders Possible Workshop Topics to Get You Started: Personal Leadership Development: Topics may include personal values, time management, motivation and the motivation of others, interpersonal communication, self-evaluation, accountability, etc.

Issues in Leadership: Topics may include diversity and social justice, risk management, ethics, etc.

Making the Most of a Leadership Experience: Topics may include campus involvement, community service, leaving a legacy, etc.

Leadership in your Chapter: Topics may include chapter management, taking initiative, planning events, life balance, etc.

Please don’t feel confined to these topics as they are only suggestions. Workshops will be 50 minutes in length and should be interactive and engaging. Each workshop will have approximately 20-40 students in attendance. The online proposal form will be available beginning Friday, October 14 th at http://www.greeklife.uconn.edu/ emerging_leaders_form.html. All proposals must be submitted by 12 noon on Monday, December 5th More than one proposal may be submitted. Presenters will be notified of their proposal status by Friday, December 9 th. Anthony Reid of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Here is what the nominator had to say: “Anthony is a Spring 2011 member in our Fraternity and has jumped right in to the leadership of our chapter. During this past semester, Anthony has stepped up to the plate and uses his creative personality to enhance our chapter operations. Anthony always lends a helping hand when needed and always supports a brother in need. Outside of Iota, he also volunteers his time by helping elementary students in our community. Anthony is a man of his word and will never leave a task unattended. With these traits, personalities, and determination, Anthony lives up to the 5 principles of our fraternity. “ Hillary Siddons of Pi Beta Phi Here is what the nominator had to say: “Hillary is an outstanding sorority member within our chapter, but also reaches out to others to help them as well. She is a strong leader, taking initiative to become involved in as much as she can. Some of her leadership roles include homecoming chair, Greek Week delegate, chair, and Management Team communications director, and Reflections Body Image program facilitator. She goes above and beyond to give every single one of her leadership roles her full attention and effort. She keeps members motivated and enthusiastic while participating in various activities. She makes sure to take a democratic approach taking in opinions of others and incorporating new ideas into her leadership style. As her activities show, she is also very community service oriented. Hillary‟s goal in college is to graduate and work with people with communication disorders. I think this shows how compassionate she is and how strong her desire is to help others. Hillary is an outstanding sister and always takes the time to be a wonderful friend.”

The National PanHellenic Council would like to thank all councils for supporting the 1st Battle of the Greeks Basketball Tournament this past Saturday, October 29th at the Armory.

Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. Congrats to the top teams: FIJI Team 1 “UCLA” (KAPsi) “Champions: Royalty Nation” (KAPsi) Again, thank you to all teams who supported and those you came to cheer on your fellow Greeks.

On October 2nd, Delta Gamma held its annual philanthropy AnchorSlam, a 3 vs. 3-basketball tournament to benefit the blind. It was an exciting day as all the participating teams competed against each other to win the title of AnchorSlam 2011. Although all teams put forth a great effort, Kappa Alpha Theta took first place for the girls, and Team Unaffiliated placed first for the boys.

It was a great day and in the end over $2000 was raised for Service for Sight and Aid to the Blind. Delta Gamma wants to thank everyone who participated and came out to support!

This fall the Zeta Chi chapter of Beta Theta Pi had the privilege of taking on fourteen talented and motivated gentlemen. All of them have demonstrated similar characteristics such as dedication to serving the community and excellence in the classroom. In the coming weeks, these men will learn what constitutes a brother of Beta Theta Pi and form bonds that will hopefully last a life time. We look forward to our annual invitation in Oxford, OH, the birthplace and alpha chapter of Beta Theta Pi. On October 22nd, Beta Theta Pi held their first annual Beta Theta Pi eating philanthropy. The contest took place on Fairfield way. The philanthropy included Pi in the face (1 for $2 or 3 for $5), eating contest ($50 for one team of five or $75 for two teams of 5) with one pie per five rounds, and a final contest where individuals brought their own baked pies that were judged by members of the Women‟s Basketball team based on taste, creativity and presentation. All proceeds were sent to St. Jude‟s Children‟s Research Hospital.

LITTLE CHANGE, BIG IMPACT: “Greek Council Undergoes Name Change” For weeks there has been a buzz within the Greek community surrounding the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). The MGC, the governing council for the culturally-based fraternities and sororities at the University of Connecticut, officially announces its new name, Intercultural Greek Council (IGC).

The IGC is comprised of eight unique organizations (2 Asian-interest, 5 Latino/a, and 1 multicultural) who come together to accomplish mutual goals, promote Greek unity throughout the UConn campus, and support each other. Since the start of this semester, the Council‟s Executive Board decided they wanted to change the direction of the Council to better reflect the current ideas and shared values of its member organizations. The development of new shared goals and programmatic initiatives, along with confusion about the use of “multicultural” prompted the name change. For many, the small change from multicultural to intercultural may seem insignificant. For the IGC, this change means big things.

“The Council has always been important to me since I crossed; seeing it grow both in organizations and productivity has been an exciting journey. This new name signals a fresh start - a revival in the council. I am honored to be a part of this new step in evolution of our council, and hope to see more throughout the coming year” says Aldo Campo, IGC President.

On the national level, the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC) exists to meet the needs of “Multicultural,” not cultural specific, Greek organizations and only one organization at UConn is actually a member of the NMGC. The other seven organizations comprising the IGC are members of either the National Asian Pacific Islander American Panhellenic Association (NAPA) or the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO). “The unveiling of IGC marks a significant milestone for the council.

The original name no longer adequately represented all of the Council‟s member organizations,” explains Jamel Catoe, Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and IGC Advisor. In an effort to be more inclusive of all of the different types of organizations represented by IGC, the Executive Board believed that “Intercultural” would more appropriately represent the vision of the Council and all current and future member organizations.

Beginning today, all future activity will be conducted using the new name. While the leadership has not changed, they respectfully request that everyone updates their records to reflect the new name. Additionally, the IGC invites everyone to show their support by “liking” their page at: facebook.com/UConnIGC. About IGC (formerly MGC) The Intercultural Greek Council was founded in Spring 2002 by five cultural and multicultural Greek-lettered organizations. Today, Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc., Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. are the eight member organizations that comprise the Council. The IGC along with three other councils the, Interfraternity Council (IFC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and Panhellenic Council govern the 34 chapters and colonies and over 1600 undergraduate students that make up the fraternity and sorority community. Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. Presents: Become a Conversation Partner at UCAELI (University of Connecticut American Language Institute) Conversation Partners play an important role in UCAELI students‟ English education. Partners who join Conversation classes will be directed by a UCAELI instructor on how to participate in each class. Generally, partners will be placed with a small group of UCAELI students who will have some questions or conversation strategy to practice.

There may be some cultural topic chosen as the focus for the conversation or the students may choose a topic of their own. The only requirement of volunteer partners is to speak only in English. Conversation Partners may join classes regularly or just once or twice. The UCAELI Coordinators will need to know in advance about volunteers‟ level of commitment so that teachers will know who to expect for each class.
