CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS! The semester is drawing to a close, and it’s surely a bittersweet time for the members of our Greek Community. We must say goodbye to our graduating seniors, and send them off to further their education or to the workplace to use the invaluable knowledge they have gained throughout their time here at the University of Connecticut. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life would like to thank the class of 2012 for their dedication, passion, and love for the Greek Community, as it is something that will be cherished for years to come. Without the drive and motivation of the graduating Greeks, our community would not be as accomplished as it is today. The past four years have shown tremendous growth within our Community. The senior class’ first HuskyTHON Dance Marathon, held in 2009, raised $56,920; just four years later, the total increased to an astounding $304,375.27. New chapters were added to our community, countless new philanthropies and fundraisers were established, and most of all, the community has fostered an inseparable bond that will surely continue after our time at UConn ends. Seniors, you have made Greek Life remarkable! The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, as well as the entire Greek Community, will certainly miss you! GREEKS OF THE MONTH Aubrey Boruck is truly inspirational in every aspect and a perfect role model. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer for her chapter, which heads Membership Development Committee, maintains risk management policies, and works with the Human Resources Director to build sisterhood. In past years she has held the positions of Social Chair and Assistant Social Chair. Aubrey is a member of the Fraternity and Sorority Peer Standards Board, and she recently went on the Greek Alternative Spring Break to Indianapolis. Aside from Greek Life, Aubrey is extremely involved in the UConn community as well. She continues to show leadership and service through her current position as the External Events Coordinator for Wish Makers on Campus, which is our Make a Wish college chapter. This position includes planning events with other groups to raise funds for Connecticut Make a Wish, as well as working with the other officers on their tasks. Her kind-hearted attitude and compassion for her sisters and members of the UConn community are evident as she continues to lead by example and encourage others to be just as involved in making a difference!

Sean Yessayan is undoubtedly an ‘Unsung Hero’ of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, for he is a leader by his actions. Actions truly do express priorities, and Sean’s actions for his chapter have not only fostered positive brother relations, but they have truly changed the dynamic of the hierarchy between elder and younger Brothers. Sean’s presence and participation in every chapter event has greatly motivated younger Brothers to aspire to be an active brother and fully utilize the fraternity. Whether he chooses to represent our chapter on the Greek Week Management Team or participate in a sorority’s philanthropy, such as Alpha Phi’s King of Hearts, Sean’s leadership is truly remarkable. He effectively communicates initiatives of the chapter to brothers to ensure that they understand the bigger picture of why we participate in philanthropies and community service, and spreads awareness about other Greek organizations and the Greek community as a whole. This paves the way for Brothers without formal titles to become more active within our chapter and be more than just “shirt-wearers.”Any Brother in the chapter can call on Sean in their time of need and know that he will do everything he can to help them. Kappa Sigma is privileged to be able to call this extraordinary gentleman a brother.

Congratulations to Ally Kruzansky for being hired as a Traveling Educational Consultant for Alpha Epsilon Phi during the 2012-2013 year! She will be representing the national organization and assisting chapters/ colonies along with two other AEPhi women. Ally will be traveling the country from Atlantic to Pacific! She is honored and thrilled to be a TEC and can’t wait to share her passion for Greek Life and Alpha Epsilon Phi!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS Peter Carriero (Kappa Sigma) His nominator said: Peter Carriero, also known as 'Ter, is a legendary Brother of Kappa Sigma. 'Ter is one of the most effective leaders in our chapter's recent history; he has excelled in every committee that he has been a part of, including Semi-Formal, Rush, and Social, and also served as our Pledge Educator during the past fall semester. Usually, senior Brothers become "burned out" upon entering their second semester; this is not at all the case for 'Ter. During the first semester of his senior year he was a Pledge Educator and he has continued his job as a mentor to the fall pledge class by hosting education seminars after every chapter meeting to teach the newly initiated Brothers about the fraternity. More importantly, he stresses the importance of contributing to the chapter and how to become an effective leader. Any Brother in the fraternity can tell you about what 'Ter has done for this chapter and we cannot imagine our college experience without his presence and leadership within the fraternity.
Sam Simons (Kappa Alpha Theta) Her nominator said: Sam Simons is one of the most outstanding people you will ever meet. During her first year in Theta, Sam became the HuskyTHON Dancer Representative and the Philanthropy Chair. The next year, Sam continued as HuskyTHON Dancer Representative and became a Morale Captain, as well as VP of Administration for her chapter. Her excitement and dedication towards Greek life even allowed Sam to be presented with a scholarship from OFSL to attend UIFI. Sam received the Lindsay L. Sell Outstanding Panhellenic Woman Award this year at the 2012 Arête Awards. Aside from Greek life, Sam was also extremely dedicated to helping the UConn community. She was an Orientation Leader for two summers and will now will serve as the Assistant Hall Director/Parent Program Supervisor for the Orientation Program this summer. She remains fully dedicated to her school and encouraging others and now serves as a Violence Against Women Prevention Program (VAWPP) Facilitator. Sam is truly an outstanding senior and will never stop being a role model for others.
Emily Martens (Kappa Alpha Theta) Her nominator said: Emily has contributed much to the Greek and larger UConn community during her years at UConn, and has continued doing so throughout her senior year. As a member of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, Emily has continually been an enthusiastic and dedicated member, serving as a New Member Mentor and Preference Day Chair for recruitment, as well as being a member of the Scholarship Committee. In the larger Greek community, Emily is chair of the Senior Engagement Committee, participates in HuskyTHON, and works as a Student Intern in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. As an English and History Double Major, Emily is currently finishing up her Honors Thesis in History, and represents UConn twice a year in Washington, DC as one of the Presidential Fellows at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress. In addition, Emily is a member of the Tau Sigma National Honors Society, the Phi Alpha Theta National Honors Society, and the Golden Key National Honors Society. Emily enjoys travelling as well, as she studied about in London during the spring semester of her junior year, and this past January spent three weeks in India studying Indian art and photography. When in London, Emily founded the “Dolls Like Me” campaign, where she raised $600 to donate multicultural dolls and toys to children of immigrants and asylum seekers in the United Kingdom. Emily is certainly an outstanding senior and role model!
PHILANTHROPY RECAPS Delta Zeta’s Turtle Tug! Delta Zeta retired their annual Turtle Kick for their national philanthropy, Turtle Tug. Over 15 teams competed in vigorous tug-of-war competitions, but with a twist: they competed in a pool of green Jell-O. All together, the teams raised an astounding $1,100. Proceeds were donated to the Painted Turtle Camp, one of Delta Zeta’s national philanthropies that supports children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The event was a great success! In addition to the perfect weather, Dunkin Donuts, Sgt. Pepperoni and Wally’s Chicken Coop generously donated food for the competitors. Although the Sigma Chi and Alpha Phi teams were the technical winners, everyone involved should feel proud for taking place in UConn’s Delta Zeta’s first ever Turtle Tug, and for helping it succeed!
Mu Sigma Upsilon’s R.A.C.E. The sisters of the iCONNic Concordia Chapter of Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. and UConn SUBOG hosted the event R.A.C.E. (Recognizing and Celebrating Ethnicities) on April 19th, 2012. R.A.C.E. is a forum through which cultural diversity is highlighted and showcased in a new and exciting way. Through R.A.C.E., both the multicultural nature of our organization, as well as that of the community around us, is demonstrated. The members of cultural organizations performed in costumes pertaining to their cultural background or heritage. From dance to song, music to poetry, R.A.C.E. has become Mu Sigma Upsilon’s signature event, the ultimate educational experience, and a true artistic celebration of differences that, ultimately, bring us all closer together. Participation and attendance was free to the UConn public. The performers who participated in R.A.C.E. were UCONN Irish, Capoeira, ALIMA, Bangladeshi Student Association, B.A.I.L.E, Nubian Foxes, and the Hellenic Student Association Paideia. A sit down dinner of Asian cuisine was also offered to the performers and attendees. This event educated the UConn campus on the diverse treasures it holds.
KAΘ’s Late Night Quesadillas! On April 5, 2012, Kappa Alpha Theta hosted their Late Night Quesadilla event at their house in Husky Village. They served quesadillas with a topping bar of salsa, sour cream and guacamole. The ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta raised $554 which was donated to the Theta Foundation, which helps women who face unexpected life events such as terminal illnesses, natural disasters, etc. Kappa Alpha Theta would like to thank everyone for coming to their Late Night and making it such a great success!

Dodge-a-rama!
Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Dodge-a-Rama was a great success! The ladies of KKΓ raised just under $900 for their national philanthropy ‘Reading is Fundamental’. Thank you to everyone who came out to support KKΓ; the sisters loved seeing everyone else having fun and getting into their games. A big shout out and congratulations to Delta Zeta and Sigma Chi as overall winners!

Please welcome back Jonathan Caéz (ΛΥΛ), Ramonita Garcia (ΛΘΑ), and Kaitlin Latham (ΠΒΦ) to our staff. Please welcome and congratulate our newest intern, Gregory Brennan (ZBT)! The end of the school year can be quite a stressful time! While a stress-free finals week is next to impossible, there are many things you can do to manage your stress level during exams!
Stay physically active! Take a walk with a friend or spend an hour at the gym to de-stress and refresh your mind. Get enough sleep! Your body needs an adequate amount of sleep for your brain to be able to comprehend everything you’re trying to cram into it! You’re more likely to remember what you’ve learned if you study or take an exam when you’re well rested. Eat healthy! Make sure to maintain a balanced diet during exams (and every day after that, too!). Eat healthy snacks, such as granola or fruit, that will keep you full and won’t let you crash mid-day. Avoid friends that are stressed! While it may be beneficial to study with friends in the same class or major, it is detrimental to your state of mind and ability to study effectively if your friends are so stressed that studying with them makes you even more stressed out!
On March 20, the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated invited Joseph Burlett to come to the University of Connecticut to talk about human trafficking prevention. This event, called “Stop Human Trafficking”, was cohosted with Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. At the event, attendees learned just how prevalent human trafficking is and how anyone anywhere can be forced into the sex trafficking industry. At the end of the presentation, students signed up to be a part of a movement that Burlett is hoping to start to prevent and ultimately end human trafficking. The event was a great success. Thank you to everyone who came out to it!

This recognition was based on excellence in academic achievement, leadership, community service, chapter integrity and commitment to the Latino Greek Community. Congratulations to the newly initiated Brothers of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Inc. This Spring semester, six new members became part of this eternal Brotherhood; Jerlon Chiu aka “Tuvok”, John Sinnorai aka “Angry Bird”, Prima Mote aka “Method Man”, Muhamad Chowdhury aka “Tik Tok”, Douglas Stephan aka “Airbender” and Richard Kim aka “Max Payne.” Pi Delta Psi Fraternity at UCONN recently received its “OMEGA” chapter status so the “Immortal Iotas” are the first class to become initiated under the Omega Chapter of Pi Delta Psi. The Iota Class unmasking event was held on April 11 at Fairfield Way. The event was a huge success as the Fairfield way was crowded with Greeks and Non-Greeks.
