In this issue:

Greek of the Month is a peer-to-peer recognition given to members of the Fraternity & Sorority Community who demonstrate outstanding leadership, service, academic accomplishment, and brotherhood/sisterhood. This individual is a person of good moral character who upholds the values of the fraternal community and the University.

February Greek of the Month Amy Nelson Amy Nelson is a member of Delta Gamma and was a HuskyTHON Representative, a Race for the Cure Representative and Delta Gamma’s Member Educator. She also plays on soccer and flag football intramural teams. “Amy is kind-hearted and a determined young woman. She brings passion and encouragement to the chapter, assuring we all strive for our best,” said her nominator Leslie Lessard of Delta Gamma.

March Greek of the Month Ellen Morello Ellen Morello, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, is not only a kind and energetic person but also her chapter’s ritualist. Ellen has taken it upon herself to educate the members of her chapter and further their understanding of what it means to be a member of Kappa Alpha Theta such as the meanings of certain symbols and rituals. “Ellen’s amazing personality and her determination to unify her chapter through her love of ritual has set Ellen apart from other members,” said her nominator Jennifer Prior of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Nominations for Greek of the Month are due by the 15th of each month and should be submitted to Kevin Lobdell at Kevin.Lobdell@uconn.edu.

The director of the film, Regina Park, will be joining us and leading a discussion afterward. HuskyTHON Submitted by Kendra Darigan, HuskyTHON CoAdvisor HuskyTHON raised $56,920 for the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and had over 300 dancers and visitors this year.

Louis Perrone, Executive Director of HuskyTHON, said “[HuskyTHON] exceeded our expectations in participants and in money raised. I have had the opportunity to work with 15 other board members and two amazing advisors, all of whom are extremely dedicated. The goal of the event, to bring the university and surrounding communities together was accomplished and it is because of this I believe the event was a major success. Many students have been treated at CCMC or know someone who has; the hospital is a very significant institution in Connecticut being one of the only children’s hospitals in the state.”

Stepping for a Change: SUBOG & National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Step Show Submitted by Shelissa Newball, NPHC Advisor On February 16, 2008 members of the Divine Nine, students, faculty and staff filled the Jorgenson Auditorium to watch five of the NPHC organizations compete for a grand prize. The teams performing were: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated came in first place each winning a grand prize of $1,000.00 which will go towards their respective chapter’s programming budgets.

It’s hard to say where stepping truly originated from. Some scholars write stepping has roots in African gum shoe dancing, while others claim it originated from AfricanAmerican coal miners. Either way stepping is one of the most visible traditions of the historically Black Greek lettered organizations (known as the NPHC or Divine Nine). Stepping is often used as a means of showcasing one’s organization and each of the nine organizations have a step for which they are known. For example, the Kappas are known to step with canes while the AKAs are known for their serious matter step.

Alpha Phi’s King of Hearts Philanthropy Submitted by Angela Cillo, Alpha Phi President On February 23, 2008 the ladies of Alpha Phi presented their first annual King of Hearts - male beauty pageant. Nine strapping young men showcased themselves in formal and swim wear with a talent in between.

These men showed off their skills and their beach bods before a captivated audience all hoping to be crowned The King of Hearts.

The pageant consisted of a formal wear and introduction portion, followed by a swim suit and talent competition. When the boys were finished strutting their stuff the judges awarded five superlatives ranging from Mr. Congeniality to Most Likely to Bring Home to Mom and Dad. With the superlatives handed out, the contestants were narrowed down to five and each was asked a question formulated by one of the judges, all who represented their respective sororities. As the boys answered their questions and the audience had some laughs, the judges again deliberated and Alpha Phi was proud to announce Eric Phillips of Delta Chi as The King of Hearts.

All proceeds raised from King of Hearts go towards Cardiac Care and helping to prevent women’s heart disease. King of Hearts was held during Cardiac Care Week February tenth to the sixteenth. The hosts wore red dresses to represent the national symbol of the red dress pin which is designed to raise awareness that women are at risk for heart disease.
