The actual celebration of Women's History Month grew out of a week long celebration of women ' s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California. President Jimmy Cater, after the buzz of the successful celebration spread across the nation declared the Week of March 8th National Women's History Week. Within 6 years time National Women's History Project petitioned to have the week extended to a whole month of recognition.
Each year Women's History Month presents a theme for their month celebration. The 2023 theme is ALLIANCE. This theme recognizes " women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling including print, radio, TV, stage, screen, blogs, news and social media." This timely theme honors women in every community who have devoted their lives and talents to producing art and news, pursuing truth and reflecting society decade after decade.
