In this issue:

Greek of the Month is a peer-to-peer recognition given to members of the Fraternity & Sorority Community who demonstrate outstanding leadership, service, academic accomplishment, and brotherhood/sisterhood. This individual is a person of good moral character who upholds the values of the fraternal community and the University.

Alyson Pappas ΚΑΘ Alyson is the Vice President of Membership for Kappa Alpha Theta has been an outstanding member of the Greek community. Alyson shows outstanding enthusiasm in everything that she does and has taken it upon herself to engage her entire chapter in recruitment by holding a song competition. Outside of Greek life, Alyson participates in the Big Brother/Big Sister program, holds a job working with a speech pathologist and was a team leader on a January trip to Mississippi to rebuild houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Her nominator, Jennifer Prior of Kappa Alpha Theta said, “her creativity and enthusiasm inspires us all...Alyson has many of the characteristics of a great leader.”

Events to Look Forward to in April: Greek Week 2008!

Greek Week is a week-long celebration for all of the fraternities and sororities on campus. It is a chance for members of various Greek-lettered student organizations to come together and celebrate the spirit and pride of being part of a fraternity/sorority. United together, the Greek community uses this time to show their passion for scholarship, service, leadership, and brother/ sisterhood. All events are open to the campus community.

Buckle Up UConn is based upon our national program Buckle Up America.

Buckle Up America is one of our ten National Programs that is geared to promote safe driving, with having car seat checks for small children and ensuring that people are wearing their seat belts.

The Nu Mu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. wanted to establish our National Program on the local level. Since car accidents are very frequent and some happening on UConn's campus, we wanted to promote the importance of wearing a seat belts before while going on Spring Break. On March 7, 2008 our chapter stood outside of the UConn Co-op w/ poster signs promoting Buckling Up and fast facts about the consequences of not wearing a seat belt.

The response from the community was very positive. Most students acknowledged that were wearing their seat belt by responding with a simple honking of the horn. Even students acknowledged that they were not wearing a seat belts actually put them on and gave a wave of thank you.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.’s initiative is to enhance the quality of life through community service, and always living up to our slogan "Greater Service, Greater Progress".

5KAΘ Θ Walk/Run Philanthropy Event Sunday, April 6 11:30am– 2pm Fairfield Way Kappa Alpha Theta is holding their annual walk to benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). $50 for group registration $10 for non student registration $5 for student registration Pre-registration is preferred. Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity Monday, April 7 7-8:30pm Student Union Theater Robert Jensen wrote the book, "Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity” and is coming to speak at UConn. Delta Zeta’s Turtle Kick Sunday, April 20

On Wednesday March 5, 2008 Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority held an event to spread awareness of the everchanging Asian standards of beauty by hosting a screening of the documentary film, “Never Perfect”. We were glad to have the filmmaker, Regina Park come to UConn to lead a discussion about the subject of matters in the film. Regina Park is a second-generation Korean America who graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a degree in English and Film Studies. With her experience in film and television production in New York, she has worked on many independent feature films, television series, documentaries and commercials. In May 2007, Regina won a Silver Remi Award for her first documentary feature film, “Never Perfect”.

“Never Perfect” explores the historical, cultural, and social issues surrounding the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery in the United States. It is based on a young Vietnamese-American woman who struggles with popular perceptions of beauty and body images brought upon by her ethnic background. She makes the choice of undergoing cosmetic surgery to get what's called a "double eyelid". Today, many Asian Americans consider bigger eyes to be more “beautiful”, which ties in with one of the reason for getting the double-eyelid surgery. From the film and the discussion with Park, we were able to get the sense on how the standards of Asian American beauty are different from what it was before. Everyone was fascinated
