Greek Week 2012 was a great success and the perfect way to celebrate our love and passion for our Greek Community here at UConn. This year’s theme was “The Week Zeus Got Loose” and each of the eight groups were given a mythological God and Goddess to represent their team. The week before the events began, the Greek Week Management Team held Penny Wars at the Student Union, as well as a canned food drive. The week kicked off with an impromptu snow storm that cancelled Greek Games, but picked right back up on Sunday with Can-struction, during which each team constructed a castle out of canned food which was later donated to the Ashford Food Bank. On Monday, the Greek Community united to watch the Greek God and Goddess pageant, and the audience was awed by the contestant’s creative togas, impressive talents, and eloquent representation of their respective chapters during the question and answer portion. Tuesday night the Greek Community was honored to attend Michelle Guobadia’s presentation entitled “Be a Dream Maker: Your Role in Making Fraternity and Sorority Life Great.” Michelle gave a spectacular lecture about her experiences in Greek Life and how each and every member of our Greek Community plays an important role in the development of their chapter. She stressed the idea that our chapters should be better, stronger, and more unified each and every day, and that any problem within our chapter can be solved through ritual. Finally, on Wednesday night the community entered Jorgensen for the final time to watch the Greek Sing competition and closing ceremonies! Each team danced the night away and impressed the judges with their creativity and talent. We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Greek Week: congratulations to Team 7 for 3rd place, Team 8 for 2nd place, and Team 1 for earning top honors as 1st place winners! -Written by: Kaitlin Latham

Congratulations to Callie Mathews and Kenzi Tedeschi for their recent selection as HuskyTHON 2013 CoExecutive Directors! Last year, Callie held the position of Co-Director of Student Activities, while Kenzi held the position of Vice President of Dancer Relations. Our community is proud to welcome them as the new leadership for HuskyTHON! We know they’ll do a fantastic job making HuskyTHON 2013 even bigger and better than the years before! The Greek Community can’t wait to see great things from Callie and Kenzi! Senior Spotlights! Steve Sadowski (Kappa Sigma) Steve Sadowski is an integral part of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Greek Community, and the university as a whole. During his tenure in the fraternity, Steve has been the Fundraising Chairman and is the current Social Chairman. As Social Chairman, Steve has transformed his position by organizing sober socials with sororities and maintaining positive relationships with all Greek organizations on campus. Within the UConn community, Steve does a tremendous amount of fundraising for HuskyTHON as a Morale Captain by setting up the event, #KripsyKremesFTK to raise $200 for Huskython. Steve is also present at all major fraternity events and has an outstanding amount of service hours and money raised. He is an exceptional role model, leading by positive example, serves as an inspiration for his younger brothers.
Danielle Gagliardi (Kappa Alpha Theta) Having been a second semester transfer student, Danielle was limited in what she could get involved in right away when she joined Theta. Although she was not eligible to apply for any officer positions, she didn’t let that stop her from volunteering her time to whatever Theta or the Greek Community needed. She became the Vice President of Development during her junior year for Theta, during which she created new awards for sisters and implemented “Text Sweet Messages.” During every chapter meeting, girls would pick a sisters’ name out of a jar and receive their TSM for the week. This meant on “Theta Thursday” they were to text their TSM a sweet message telling them how proud they are of some accomplishment they achieved, how happy they are to be sisters, or whatever they wanted! Danielle has also demonstrated her commitment to campus involvement. She has been a UConn Campus Ambassador for American Eagle and Verizon Wireless, a FYE mentor for UConn transfer students, and a HuskyTHON morale captain!
Karen Sutin (Alpha Epsilon Phi) As the former Chapter President and VP of Finance, Karen is a true leader in Alpha Epsilon Phi. Karen chose to finish out her undergraduate career strong as an active sister by taking on the position of Public Relations Chair. As if academics, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and her personal interests (especially basketball!) aren't enough to keep Karen busy, she was also thoroughly involved with the creation of Sobrio, an opportunity to provide sober rides to students, at Startup Weekend Storrs. She lives AEPhi’s ritual day in and day out, but most specifically through encouraging chapter members to be the best they can be. She often sends out inspiring e-mails and tweets that remind her sisters and her peers what is truly important in our fastpaced lives. As a chapter, Alpha Epsilon Phi is so incredibly proud of Karen for all she has accomplished, and her sisters know that she is going to do even more amazing things after she graduates with her Bachelor's degree in marketing this May.
Senior Events Unfortunately due to budgetary constraints, the OFSL will not be hosting the Etiquette Dinner this spring, originally scheduled for April 15th.
Graduation is ALMOST HERE! Make sure you have applied for graduation on your PeopleSoft account. Everyone should have submitted a plan of study already. Your PeopleSoft account can be used to monitor your degree progress. Purchase your cap and gown at the UConn Co-op as soon as possible. You will be able to receive guest tickets with the receipt from this purchase.

Greeks of the Month
Owen Sandoval Kappa Sigma
Owen Sandoval is truly an extraordinary Brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Upon his first semester as an initiated Brother he received the Most Valuable Brother Award for his diligence and commitment to the Order. His outstanding leadership led him to simultaneously chair two of the most pivotal committees in within the chapter: Scholarship and Rush. During his tenure as the Scholarship Chairman Owen focused on enhancing the chapter’s new member GPA by making scholarship a key issue within the new member program. Last semester Owen set-up a second philanthropy, HolidayFest #FTK to benefit HuskyTHON. Owen’s leadership and commitment to service helped the Kappa Sigma Fraternity raise close to $300 in one night and more importantly raise awareness within the chapter about the cause, which ultimately led to over $12,000 raised by the chapter for HuskyTHON. Brother Owen’s positive example and excitement has helped the chapter reach new heights during his tenure in the fraternity.
What makes Jenine Entwistle an outstanding Greek member is her dedication and love for community service. Last spring Jenine became a member of Alpha Phi Omega, which is a national service fraternity. She participated in many events with this organization, for example, going off-campus to play bingo with the elderly and organizing a pledge service project. She was the treasurer for her pledge class and therefore went above and beyond her required 25 hours of community service. In addition, she volunteered over 40 hours this past summer at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. With all of her experience and passion for community service, Jenine was awarded the position of Service and Philanthropy Director for Kappa Alpha Theta. Since being awarded this position, Jenine has constantly been providing numerous community service and philanthropy opportunities for her sisters. Jenine feels it is not about the amount of hours you spend, but the amount of passion and enthusiasm you put into the service. She has loved each and every activity that she devoted her time to and plans on passing that along to the members in her chapter.

Zeta Beta Tau’s Car Smash Sunday, April 15th 10am-4pm on Fairfield Way Participants will hit a car with a sledgehammer, trying to make the car as damaged as possible by the end of the event. This year, all proceeds will go to The Christian Klorczyk Scholarship Fund, a foundation started by the Klorczyk family after the beloved brother of ZBT passed away last year. It will cost $1 per hit or $5 for unlimited hits. Please support Zeta Beta Tau and the memory of Christian Klorczyk!
Philanthropy Events in April!
Pi Beta Phi’s Fraternity Day of Service On March 2nd 2012, also known as Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday, the sisters of Pi Beta Phi held their annual Fraternity Day of Service. To celebrate and give back, Pi Phis traveled to the Willington Public Library to read and make crafts with children. The afternoon was a great success, and the children who attended were read Dr. Seuss books such as The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. After each story, the children participated in making a craft that coincided with the book’s topic while eating Dr. Seuss themed cupcakes. The sisters of Pi Beta Phi had so much fun giving back to the community at their Fraternity Day of Service and can’t wait for next year’s event!

On February 28th, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. along with the NAACP, and Poetic Release held an event called Be Black History. In honor of Black History Month, performers were encouraged to celebrate the work of a famous African American. Whether it was through song, poetry, or a story, the deeds of these individuals were acknowledged. After the performances concluded, the organizations opened the floor up for Open Mic performances which consisted of tributes to musical artists. The contestants will perform a talent of their choice, eloquently impress you in the question and answer portion, as well as showcase their best nerd wear in the geek chic portion. Come find out who will walk away with the safety goggles! Cost for this event is $3.00.
The Zeta Chi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi co-hosted an alumni event with the Beta Theta Pi New York City Alumni Association at Stout NYC and the B r o a d w a y C o m e d y C l u b . On Wednesday, March 14, the brothers of Beta Theta Pi ventured into New York City to meet up with local alumni. The night started out with the undergrads taking a train ride in from Long Island. From there we met up with members of the Beta Theta Pi New York City Alumni Association at Stout NYC, an Irish pub that is only a block away from Penn Station. The restaurant felt like it was brand new and the food was great and inexpensive. The brothers were able to meet Beta alumni that currently work in the city and have graduated from a variety of colleges, including: Michigan State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Iowa State University, University of Minnesota, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Miami. The Zeta Chi Betas enjoyed networking along with comparing their experiences with the fraternity and how our values are still upheld. Kal Pipo, the head of the NYC Alumni Association, stated “This was a success and we should make this an annual event.” After dinner we walked over the Broadway Comedy Club. Although the comedians were average we were still able to get a few laughs. It was a great way to end the night and hopefully this event will be an annual occurrence.

Spring Has Sprung! The Importance of Serving Others! Community service is part of the foundation of each organization in our Greek community. Participation in community service projects or one of the many philanthropy events occurring this month will help you build character through the realization of the needs of others. Sponsoring philanthropy events, fundraising for HuskyTHON, or even volunteering a few hours of your time at a soup kitchen are a few ways for you to get involved and help others in the community. We are all busy students, striving for academic excellence and ultimately success in our respective fields, but each and every member of the Greek Community can certainly find time to help others. Please consider participating in the philanthropy events held this month. We encourage you to attend an event sponsored by a council other than your own to support your fellow Greeks! Good luck to the chapters that are hosting philanthropic events this month!
With the weather warming and the sun shining, it seems that students are beginning to put their school work on the backburner and are instead focusing their attention on tanning outside and partying. The semester is coming to a close very soon, and while the high temperatures and sunny skies may deter us from spending long hours with Homer Babbidge, or going to class in Arjona where it’s hotter than the sun, school work needs to be every student’s number one focus! The next few weeks or so can make or break your final grade, so make sure to attend class regularly and keep up with your course -load! Academic Excellence is a pillar of Greek Life, so maintaining your grades is a must! Good luck with the rest of the semester, be safe, and remember to keep up those grades!
