Meet the Recruitment Management Team

The purpose of the Recruitment Management Team is to plan and oversee the Primary Recruitment process. Each member of RMT plays an integral part of ensuring that recruitment logistics are set to go and all participants feel welcomed and included.

Along with the Recruitment Management Team, Recruitment counselors (RCs) are also here to support you. RCs are neutral members of a Panhellenic sorority who serve as an unbiased guide during the recruitment period. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to RMT or your recruitment counselors!

Interfraternity Council (IFC) IFC is the governing council for 13 fraternities on campus. Many have or have held membership in the North American Interfraternity Conference.

Intercultural Greek Council (IGC) IGC is the governing council for the 13 culturally-based fraternities and sororities.

Though IGC member organizations have a focus on cultural awareness, none are culturally exclusive.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) NPHC is a collaborative organization of 9 historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities, @UConnNPHC collectively referred to as the “Divine Nine”.

PNM Expectations

Potential New Members must be accepted and enrolled as full-time students (minimum 12 credits) at the University of Connecticut.

Potential New Members must also attend/complete any and all programming required by the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Development.

Potential New Members must attend all academic classes and labs during the Primary Recruitment period for the duration of the class scheduled time.

Potential New Members will not visit any sorority houses except during designated Primary Recruitment events until after Bid Day. Potential New Members must attend all recruitment events to which they are invited.

Potential New Members must maximize their options during Selections for rounds 1, 2, 3 (Scholarship, Philanthropy, & Sisterhood).

Any PNM who does not attend an event without an approved excuse will be asked to leave the Primary Recruitment process. The Director of PNMs or VP of Recruitment must approve any emergencies or illness that may prevent attendance.

Potential New Members must attend the Primary Recruitment events at the time officially scheduled to them.

Potential New Members may not contact any active sorority members during Primary Recruitment week.

Sorority members may not contact PNMs. Potential New Members must be respectful to all sorority members, staff, and other PNMs and may not spread rumors or make disparaging remarks about chapters, chapter members, or other PNMs.

Values Based Recruitment Values: The principles that guide you in making decisions about who you are and how you choose to live.

The National Panhellenic Conference is a values based organization.

Each chapter holds different values that are reflected in their rituals, philanthropy, and obligations of membership. As a PNM, it is important to have values based conversations while considering who you are and what you want out of your experiences.

During Recruitment: • Be yourself and stay true to your personality!

• Ask Questions! Don't hesitate to ask members about obligations of membership or about their own personal values and how they are involved in the community outside the chapter.

• Have an open mind. This is YOUR opportunity to meet 9 unique chapters at UConn.

Trust the process and go into each round unbiased with your values in mind.

Panhellenic Recruitment Orientation Wednesday, September 6th Student Union Theatre Session 1: PNMs A-M, 7-8:30pm Session 2: PNMs N-Z, 9-10:30pm

During Orientation, you will learn more detailed information about the recruitment process. In addition, you will meet your recruitment counselors and the other PNMs in your group.

There is no specific dress code for this mandatory WHAT TO WEAR: orientation. Wear what makes you comfortable!

As you talk with your recruitment counselor, consider these questions as you prepare for recruitment rounds.

How could you incorporate what you're looking for in a sorority experience into your conversations? How can you connect these values in conversations with women in the chapters? What types of values are rooted in your friendships and community?

What qualities do you value most in your closest friends?

What do you want most out of a community experience?

Round 1: Scholarship Day Thursday, Sept 7th, 5-10pm

Primary Recruitment begins with Scholarship Day. PNMs will meet with all 9 chapters and learn more about their academics and their organization.

Log into Zoom with your UCONN email to ensure you have access!

What to Wear:

For the first round, wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. Since this round is on zoom, make sure you are in a well lit, quiet area, and use headphones if in the room with another person!

Write down notes about the chapters in between each event.

Be authentic, don’t be afraid to tell them about yourself.

Feel free to ask your RC any questions, they are there to help!

Round 2: Philanthropy Day Friday, Sept 8th, 4:30-11:15pm

Philanthropy day is the first day that is invitation only. You can be invited to visit a maximum of 7 chapters. They will present on their local and/or national philanthropies and service efforts. You'll also have the opportunity to have a conversation with an active sister in the chapter.

Round 3: Sisterhood Day

Sisterhood is the third round of recruitment and is also invitation only. You can be invited to visit a maximum of 5 chapters. You’ll talk with members to gain a greater perspective of their sisterhood and how they celebrate their chapter.

We suggest wearing wedges, heels, or What to nice sandals/flats, and then a dress or Wear: nicer bottoms and a top. Wear what you feel most confident in!

Sunday, September 10th, 10am - 7:15pm

As the final day of Primary Recruitment, conversation is intimate and more serious. You will have the opportunity to indicate which organization you wish to receive a membership invitation via the MRABA. This is the most formal round of recruitment. We suggest wearing a nice dress/jumpsuit/business casual with heels What to or wedges (if you feel comfortable). An example is Wear: something you would wear to graduation or a day-time wedding. Be true to your personal style!

Reflect on the conversation you had in this round and all the prior rounds Assess the women you’ve met; these women could be your sorority sisters so make sure you feel comfortable Go with your gut!

Monday, Sept 11th, 5pm

This is it! Bid Day signals the conclusion of the Primary Recruitment period. If you receive an invitation from a chapter your new sisters will host a special celebration to get to know you better!

WHAT TO WEAR:

Feel free to wear whatever you would be comfortable wearing for the rest of the day! You will receive your first piece of sorority apparel from your chapter!

Be open to the new journey!

Don't be afraid to show your excitement and enthusiasm!

You will be welcomed into a chapter. Just like any other friendship, you will have to a build relationship with these women and vice verse.

Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement a.k.a. MRABA

The membership recruitment acceptance binding agreement (MRABA) is the contract a potential new member (PNM) signs to receive a bid from an NPC sorority. PNMs will be educated thoroughly on the recruitment process including education about the MRABA. A PNM must understand the MRABA they are signing is just that a binding agreement. By signing the MRABA, a PNM acknowledges that they understand and agree to each of the conditions listed in the document. You will be provided opportunities for clarification and have any remaining questions answered before you sign the binding agreement. The MRABA and the accompanying script are written and arranged for readability and clarity in understanding.

On the next page are some key clarifications about recruitment and the MRABA. The Panhellenic community (e.g., chapter leaders, recruitment counselors) have been educated on these items, and will prevent any inaccurate information that is being shared in the community.

Staff from the Center of Sorority and Fraternity Development will also be available to answer any questions about the MRABA you may have.

MRABA

1. A PNM has the option to withdraw from recruitment at any time and should never feel that they must complete the recruitment process, or feel forced to join sorority at any point in the recruitment process. This includes not completing the MRABA if they are not ready to make a commitment to a sorority at that time.

2. A PNM has the option to limit their choices when completing the MRABA. On the MRABA, a PNM is agreeing that they will accept a bid from any sorority they rank. They must not be pressured to rank all of their remaining options if they know they would not accept a bid from that sorority.

Maximizing options does allow the PNM to be placed as a quota addition.

Maximizing options does not guarantee a bid to the PNMs first preference.

Maximizing options does not make the PNM more likely to receive a bid to their first preference.

Limiting options does not increase nor decrease the PNM's chance to be placed into their first preference.

Limiting options does not make the PNM less likely to receive a bid to their first preference.

Maximizing options does not influence the PNM's placement on a chapter's list, as chapters do not have access to know the preference order selected by a PNM. Limiting options does not "mess up" the computer system.

If a PNM is certain they do not want to be a member of a chapter, they should not list the chapter on their MRABA. In signing the binding agreement, the PNM is in essence pre-accepting a bid from any sorority that they list.

Anti-Hazing Information

HAZING POLICY Hazing, defined as any activity without reasonable or legitimate educational value expected of someone for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional, psychological, and/or physical harm, regardless of a person's willingness to participate.

PENALTIES In cases of individual violators, appropriate disciplinary action may be imposed as outlined in the Responsibilities of Community Life: The Student Code, In cases where organizations have authorized such conduct, loss of privileges, temporary suspension of registration, or rescission or termination of registration may be imposed, Such penalties shall be in addition to any penalties pursuant to the penal law (Public Act Number 88-328) which violator or organization may be subject.

REPORTING If you feel you have been hazed or harmed, or you have seen or know of a hazing /harmful incident, you are encouraged to report the incident using the on -line Hazing Reporting Form at https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?UnivofConnecticut&layout_id=8

Bid Promising

Bid promising, also known as an oral bid, is communicating, whether via social media, texting, verbally, etc., to a potential new member implying that they will receive a bid for a membership.

Bid promising is not tolerated by the Panhellenic council. No sorority members should be promising membership.

A few examples of bid, promising include, (put, are not limited to): "XYZ chapter would love to have you."

"Don't worry, you are already in” “We/I can't wait to see you on bid day.”

"I can see/want you as my little.”

"We can't wait to see you at the next recruitment round."

If you hear of bid promising or are promised a bid we ask that you complete an Infraction report with your RC or member of the Recruitment Management Team. In addition, if at any point you know of someone, either a chapter member, RC or a fellow PNM, who has violated the PNM Bill of Rights, CPH Code of Ethics or the Behavioral Contract, we ask that you submit an infraction report. This report must be filled within 30 days of the alleged infraction. These can be filled out by notifying your RC or notifying the VP of Recruitment, Panhellenic President, or a CFSD staff member.

Financial Transparency The financial requirements of joining a sorority vary from chapter to chapter. The main costs associated with becoming a member at the University of Connecticut consist of membership fees each semester, one-time new member fees, and miscellaneous fees specific to each chapter. A breakdown of new member fees will be available, for each chapter, before recruitment begins.

Many chapters will also have additional fees which could include purchasing apparel for recruitment, building funds, and badge fees. In addition to mandatory expenses, there may also be additional, optional expenses such as Sisterhood Weekend TShirts.

Students are encouraged to determine how much they will want to allocate to the expenses at the beginning of each semester.

We will have the estimated cost of joining for each chapter available on the website (http://greeklife.uconn.edu/cph) as well on the following pages.

Payment options, such as forms of payment and payment due dates vary from chapter to chapter as well. Some chapters require full payment at the beginning of each semester while others have implemented payment plans. It is important to consider financial obligations associated with joining a sorority.

Payment Plan Options

Alpha Chi Omega

Offers installments, which takes the total amount owed for dues and breaks it up into two payments. The first payment would be due on the 25th of the first month in that billing period, the second payment would be due on the 25th of the second month in that billing period. For extenuating circumstances, we can consider other payment options.

Payment plans are discussed/created on an individual basis to best meet a sister’s needs. These are typically split into 3 parts and are due throughout the semester.

Dues can be paid in one large sum, three sums (September, October, January), or monthly as outlined in the Chapter Dues Handout. Corporation Fees are billed separately, by National Headquarters, and follow the payment plan selected by the individual member. This payment plan follows a similar structure as above.

Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta does not have any payment plan options. Bills are addressed to members on the first of each month and are expected to be paid by the 10th of that month. If a member is in need of financial assistance, Delta Zeta’s National HeadQuarters provides a number of different scholarships that any member is welcomed to apply to.

Members are also welcomed and encouraged to discuss any concerns that they may have with the chapter’s Treasurer, CCD Advisor, and National Advisor.

Gamma Phi Beta

Sisters can do an increment of three payment plan. Rather than paying all at once they are given three months to pay a third of the total price for each month.

Option to apply for a payment plan and pay in three Kappa Alpha Theta installments throughout the semester instead of 1 payment at the beginning of semester.

Phi Sigma Rho

All new members are required to pay in 3 installments.

The following are the payment due dates: $110 on 10/2, $109 on 10/16, and $109 on 10/30. Active members have the option of paying in full on 10/2 in the fall and 3/4 in the spring, or paying in 3 installments. In the fall semester, the due dates are as follows for active members: $84 on 10/2, $83 on 10/16, and $83 on 10/30. In the spring semester, the due dates are as follows for active members: $96 on 3/4, $96 on 3/18, and $96 on 4/1. If special accommodations are needed, that can be discussed with the VP of Finance.

Pi Beta Phi

Payment plans are available to split the total payment into thirds, with each third being due subsequently over the course of three months. For the fall, increments would be due 8/20, 9/20, and 10/20.

What to expect as a New Member As a new member of a Panhellenic sorority, your first semester acclimates you to sorority life and the University of Connecticut After Bid Day, you are expected to attend regular new member meetings until initiation Each chapter has a different program designed explicitly for new members that educate you about the history, tradition, and rituals of your chapter and teach you how to live out chapter values in everyday settings New Member Educators are women elected by the chapter whose responsibility is to guide you through new member education and initiation Often, active members will invite you to attend regular events such as socials, philanthropic event, Panhellenic-sponsored activities, and community engagement opportunities At the heart of our organizations is academic excellence, Many organizations offer study hours and opportunities for scholarship.

Chapters may also offer tutoring services.

As a new member, make sure to take advantage of academic opportunities your chapter offers you. It can be easy to get caught up in the social environment of your chapter; as a new member it should be one of your top priorities to contribute to your chapter's academic success.

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED TO GO TO ALL OF THE EVENTS LISTED ON MY RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE? Yes! The objective of recruitment is for you, as a PNM, to learn as much as you can about the University of Connecticut Greek community, as well as each of the chapters so that you can make the best possible decision regarding membership. If you miss an event to which you were invited to, you could be released from the recruitment process.

WILL ALL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE AN INVITATION TO A SORORITY AT THE END OF RECRUITMENT? Participation in primary recruitment does NOT guarantee you an invitation to join a sorority, and it is possible to go through recruitment and not receive an invitation to a sorority. This is a mutual selection process, so as much as you are choosing a chapter, they are choosing you as well! We encourage you to go into every chapter with an open mind and the willingness to have a great conversation.

IF I PARTICIPATE IN PRIMARY RECRUITMENT AM I OBLIGATED TO JOIN A SORORITY? Potential New Members who choose to participate in recruitment are not obligated to join a sorority. The recruitment process is structured to allow women interested in sorority membership the opportunity to explore Panhellenic sororities and to see if it is the right fit.

WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO BE IN A CERTAIN SORORITY? Only wanting to be a member of one specific sorority or only considering a few sororities can severely limit your options for membership and can lead to disappointment. Please don't choose a sorority based on stereotypes or others' opinions. We encourage you to keep an open mind about the chapters and make a decision that is right for you.

CAN I GO THROUGH PRIMARY RECRUITMENT AS AN UPPERCLASSMAN? Yes! Most PNMs may be first and second year students, but upperclassmen are also encouraged to register.

WHAT IF I AM GOING TO MISS OR BE LATE FOR AN EVENT DURING PRIMARY RECRUITMENT? The Panhellenic Council encourages you to review your class schedule and any other obligations you may have prior to recruitment week. Alert your recruitment counselor if you will be late to or absent from an event as soon as possible. Your tardiness or absences must be approved by the VP of Recruitment or member of RMT in order to not be dismissed from recruitment.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO BALANCE SORORITY LIFE AND ACADEMICS? Time management is key. Many sorority women are able to manage sorority responsibilities, jobs or internships, academics, and involvement in other campus organizations, If you are interested in joining a sorority but have concerns about the time commitment, feel free to ask active members how they balance their time!

The mission of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women is to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service.

Throughout its history, Pi Beta Phi has helped young women develop meaningful relationships while reaching their personal potential through leadership opportunities. Pi Beta Phi offers programs that provide a variety of services and benefits to its members, including a lifetime of sisterhood, personal development, philanthropic service, leadership opportunities, mentor relationships.
