FROM THE HEAD

Student experience is paramount Over the past 15 years, since I commenced in my role in July 2008, UC has been constantly evolving and changing. Prior to my arrival, I had just completed four years as Vice Principal of St Hilda’s College. Both colleges were the same size, with 200 students, predominately from regional and rural Victoria. That same year, however, along came the Melbourne Model, which transformed the curriculum at the University of Melbourne, as well as the demographic of our residential colleges. It led to more students coming from interstate and overseas. In the face of such change, the quality of the student experience at UC has been paramount.

This is informed by our purpose and values. They are the building blocks which underpin our college culture, giving us a constant reference point for our everyday decision making and a strong sense of direction.

To that end, in 2009, with the support of the Council, I set up the stakeholder model of collaboration between the Student Club leadership and College administration. This was underpinned by the introduction of the resident tutor model, together with enhanced academic, wellbeing and alumni programs.

Upgrading and modernising our facilities to improve safety and amenity for our students was also a priority.

This was driven by two fundamental infrastructure needs: the construction of a perimeter fence to secure the College, and an extension of the existing dining hall, which was too small for the existing cohort of 200 students. At the time, our kitchen facilities were also barely compliant.

Work began on the first stage of the perimeter fence in 2011, replacing the post and rail timber fence marking the boundary of the Old Carlton Cricket Ground, which was on the site before the College was founded in 1937.

The fence was completed in 2013, following a Bequest from Dr Lena McEwan FRCS FRACS. A further aim was to enhance and enlarge our existing facilities, although significant growth was not contemplated at that time.

That changed in late 2014, when the University of Melbourne made an approach to the colleges. The University was seeking expressions of interest in increasing the amount of student accommodation on campus by working with the colleges to build new student rooms. This request was embraced by our College Council, not just as an opportunity to demolish and reconstruct college wings at the end of their useful life, but also for growth.

Over the next two years, Lovell Chen Architects was engaged, a new College Master Plan was developed and a proposal put to the University.

However during the negotiations with the University, it became apparent that their strategy had changed and they had decided to partner with commercial providers. Nevertheless, the University helped facilitate a loan arrangement with the NAB which enabled the College to commence the UC Reconstruction Project in 2016.

The Project was to be completed in two stages: the first, a new dining hall and kitchen, and the second, two new wings for the College. However, as many of you will be aware, the construction process was extremely difficult, with significant delays. Nevertheless, the dining hall was completed in March 2017, followed by the two new wings in August 2019.

With great optimism and a wonderful new cohort of 340 students, in February 2020 the academic year commenced.

What no-one could foresee was that in March we would all be blindsided by the COVID-19 pandemic and by

Easter, many of our students would return home. Over the next two years, as Melbourne endured the longest lockdowns of any city in the world, all college activities transitioned online, or were placed on hold.

Happily, in 2022 we emerged from those difficult years, and for the past two years we have been working with all of our stakeholders to reclaim and enhance our unique UC experience.

Together with the Student Club Executive, our focus this year has been on fostering increased student connectivity. Activities, events, and spaces have all been organised with intentional interactions to maximise potential for meeting other students.

This has assisted both new and returning students to connect, forging many new friendships. I am so proud of our students and their achievements!

It is also timely to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Council President, Jane Peck, during these years of challenge and change. Her commitment to the College has been unwavering. Her leadership and judgement incredibly sound and clear.

Jane, as you step down as President in March 2024, we thank you for all that you have done for the College.

I look forward to continuing to work with you in your role as Chair of the Advancement Committee, to give more students the opportunity for a wonderful UC experience.

STUDENT CLUB

As 2023 winds to a close, I have the chance to reflect on this year and the wonder it has been.

My intention for this year was to establish an environment in which people felt proud to be UC students. I wanted everyone to feel a sense of belonging in this community and connection to this college. From where I stand, I believe this has been achieved.

I have watched as UC’s students have consistently embodied our motto ‘love, passion and die-hard spirit’, giving back to this college and its students.

Taking care of the community The strength of 2023’s student leadership, the Student Club Executive and Representatives, O-Week Leaders and second years, has meant that we have established a culture in which connections are able to flourish, instilling the students with pride and enthusiasm for all that UC has to offer. I am constantly reminded of how unique UC’s students are. They are engaged, eager and dedicated to this college in ways that I am continually impressed by.

My job this year has been to take care of the community; it has meant that I have invested in the students and their experiences. The 2023 exec team has worked with admirable dedication to deliver a year of events that have fostered community spirit and belonging.

Our intention for this year was to deliver a social, cultural and sporting calendar that welcomed all students, getting them involved and leading by example in fostering a community grounded in connection, support and dedication.

My impression is that we have succeeded in cultivating a culture of impassioned students. It has been my pleasure to work alongside 2023 exec and watch their ideas and hard work come to fruition.

College is a unique time, in which young people are able to find genuine connection in a period of transitional change. We all live interesting and complex lives, yet UC remains that connective substance – our memories together tethering us to each other.

I have gained so much from my experiences at UC and I know that my peers share this sentiment. UC is a source of joy for its students and has provided solace during the ups and downs that this time of change was bound to bring. I am constantly reminded of what a privilege it is to attend UC, to have the chance to grow into yourself surrounded by people that have become dear friends.

I am grateful to have spent this year with the 2023 cohort, they have shown me the value of the college experience and its transformative abilities.

Reflecting on this year, I am impressed by what has been accomplished and the community’s reception of all events, efforts and initiatives. The 2023 cohort is unique in their embodiment of UC’s love, passion and die-hard spirit. I am lucky to have shared in their experience, watching them grow into true UC students and taking everything this year offered in their stride. I have

gained so much from this year and have cherished every moment of taking care of this community. Looking ahead, I am deeply impressed by the 2024 Student Club’s abilities and cannot wait to see what they achieve.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Setting sail on a semester of fun Our second semester was chock-a-block full of fun social activities and events. One of the biggest highlights of every year is UC Day, where we celebrate what it means to be a UCer. This year our campus played host to arcade activities, a pizza truck, boiler room and a charity auction (raising over $3,000 for the Cancer Council). Some of the most exclusive items up for sale included the car prop from our production of Grease, a weekly motivational message from our president Helena and a weekly un-motivational message from Peter, our vice president.

One of the first events of the semester was the ‘When I Grow Up’ Tern. This set up the semester nicely, providing a lively way to reconnect with friends. The Leggatt Hall was transformed into a dancefloor with a DJ and extra snacks were provided by the kitchen. Everybody dressed up and we had a range of ‘when I grow up’ themed costumes, from academics to Myki inspectors. It was a great way to pave the vibes for the rest of the semester.

Another highly anticipated annual event is the boat cruise. On 16 August, UC students boarded the Lady Cutler for a night of dancing, whilst cruising down Melbourne’s famous Yarra River. The theme was ‘Under the UC’ which led to many great seathemed costumes. Some of the crowd favourites were seaweed and pollution, however there were lots of pirates and sailors going around too. Everyone seemed to find their ‘sea legs’ and it was a successful night enjoyed by all.

Our last major student-led social event of the semester was the Sports and Arts Ball, which recognises the contributions made by those involved with any sports and arts related college activities.

Students spent the evening at Ms Collins, a fantastic venue in the city. College and venue DJs provided music for the night, which was spent dancing by most. It was a great way to celebrate our athletes and artistic contributions alike, with awards given to our ‘most beautiful boar’ (Amelie Lumsden-Steele) and the student with the most love, passion and die-hard spirit (Ruby Bouffler).

Overall, our second semester’s social events provided much entertainment and amusement for all. The social secretaries, Kim Taylor and Sam Crosthwaite, did an amazing job of planning and will be remembered for their successes.

UC PRODUCTION

We’ve got chills...

Every year, early in the second semester, rehearsals for the UC musical production get underway. Performed at The University of Melbourne’s newly completed, state-of-theart, Union House Theatre, this year’s production of Grease was a huge success, enthralling the audience and garnering some serious praise!

In a review by Emma Parfitt from ‘Dia-log’, a chronicle of UniMelb student theatre reviews, our production of Grease was described as “a rollicking delight filled to the brim with exceptional performances.” She also felt that “University College did an admirable job leaning into the unavoidable sexism of the musical, almost satirising the show to create a commentary of misogyny in 1950s American high schools. The direction of Jess Irons and Amelie Griffiths-Brown created both a poignant and hilarious take on the classic musical, successfully adapting it for a 2023 audience.”

Hamilton and Olivia Bowater, were absolute stars on stage, alongside standout performances by Antoinette Boxall as an overly cheerful Patty, Angus Mayes bringing electric energy to character Johnny Casino and Mia McGovern as Rizzo, owning the stage during her solo ‘There Are Worse Things I Could Do.’ Not to mention the impressive choreography, which was

executed so well by every single cast member under the direction of Esther Gulley, and featuring a high energy, show-stopping performance by Danny (Will Hamilton) and Cha Cha (Izzy Stone).

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in the production, you helped make it a resounding success.

ART, MUSIC AND DESIGN WEEK

A bumper crop of talent UC’s Art, Music and Design Week took place between 25 August and 4 September, this year receiving a record 105 entries. Once again, we welcomed Dr Di Bresciani OAM and Dr Julie Cotter to adjudicate and select their winning entries.

The high table on 4 September was set aside to announce the winners, with pre-dinner drinks taking place amongst the exhibition of entries. During the dinner, our Head of College, Dr Jennifer McDonald, congratulated our students for taking part in Art, Music and Design Week and thanked Dr Di Bresciani OAM for her generosity and ongoing support of the event.

An enthusiastic opening In August, 181 prospective students and their families visited UC for Open Day. Between this and our May Open House event, we have had 296 prospective students visit us, with a total of 750 people walking through the doors.

Thankfully we had more than 45 enthusiastic students offering to be tour guides on the day, and once again we received some excellent feedback on how friendly and accommodating they were. During her application interview, one student said Sophia, one of our student kitchen staff who was handing out ice-cream on the day, “single handedly made me want to come to UC because she was so nice and enthusiastic.”

This year we went for a bit of a carnival atmosphere, with fairy floss and popcorn carts featuring alongside the staples of the coffee cart and BBQ. We also had a team from the 3 Minute Angels come in to offer short, free neck and shoulder massages for students and guests – we know it can be pretty tiring visiting so many colleges in one day! It’s always a big effort to pull this day together, from extra cleaning to flowers and catering, so thanks to all our staff and students for making it so successful.

GOVERNOR’S HIGH TABLE

Never stop learning

In August we were delighted to have 20 Governors of the College join our students and staff for high table in the Syme Dining Hall. This event celebrated the leadership our Governors bring to the College, just as their appointment as Governors by the College Council recognises their contribution and commitment to UC. UC Governor and Councillor, Karyn Sobels, addressed the student cohort as part of the evening’s formalities.

She spoke about the highlights of her career and offered advice to our students about how to follow their passions.

She encouraged them to embrace change and learning in order to give themselves options in a changing world. She also spoke of the importance of working in a role that gives you energy, making conscious choices to move if you have to, even if it means less money. But her biggest tip was to never, ever stop learning!

The Governors were seated amongst the students, giving them a chance to swap stories about UC over the years, and it was a memorable evening filled with chatter and laughter.

EVENTS

A day out on the town In November we were thrilled to be able to organise a tour of Melbourne’s Town Hall for some of our Georgina Sweet Society members.

First, everyone enjoyed a light lunch at UC, before hopping in a taxi to the city. After navigating security, we met our tour guide (Judy) who was incredibly knowledgeable about the site and its artwork, pointing out a number of significant pieces. The Town Hall proudly displays a lot of First Nations artwork, acknowledging and exploring the history of the site before colonisation.

We were able to visit the auditorium and stand on the Portico Balcony, where the Beatles stood in 1964. But the highlight was probably the Grand Council Chambers, where Jenny Stewardson was keen to sit in the Lord Mayor’s chair and try out the gavel!

There was plenty to learn about how councilors are elected, the council crest and all the decorative elements on display (including a controversial art piece that frequently divides opinion). Thanks to everyone who joined us, we look forward to the next adventure.

WELLBEING

UCers enjoying the R U Okay Day afternoon tea in the Mural Room

Kindness and connections This semester has been a busy one for the Wellbeing Committee at UC! We held our first ‘Stamp Dinner’, where students were given either a red, yellow, green, or blue stamp, that matched a table to find a seat at for dinner. This offered an opportunity for our new and existing students to make some connections outside of their regular friendship groups. It was a bright and buzzing night, filled with chatter and many discussions about everyone’s holiday adventures.

To keep the sense of community running high, we had our first round of UC SNAPs for Semester 2. UC SNAPs allow people to anonymously submit messages, compliments, and thanks to other students. We received an overwhelming number of responses, making a lot of people feel very special and highlighting how important we all are to each other.

Working alongside our Dean of Students, Liz, and Wellbeing Coordinator, Katie, the Wellbeing Committee held regular meetings to discuss events and ensure the student voice was being prioritised. We covered important topics for our communal living environment, such as key calendar dates for mental health, tips for shared housing, and making sure our medical resources posters are kept updated and readily available.

We continued strong with our motto of ‘love, passion, and die-hard spirit’ as we entered Spirit Week in week eight. This event is all about showing your appreciation for the people around you and showering them with a bit of love and kindness. We kept it exciting by keeping the acts of kindness anonymous, because let’s be honest, sometimes it’s nice to have a secret admirer! To spark some inspiration, we set out criteria: MAKE something, GIVE something, DO something. Everyone embraced these cues, and it was a major success! We saw an array of beautiful and wholesome gestures.

From personalised cards, sweet treats, poems and nifty haikus, to special outings, colourful door decorating and even a handmade, personalised wooden box full of thoughtful gifts.

The Wellbeing Committee also put on a baking night. After making over 200 cupcakes, brownies and cookies, students came to write a note and grab a goodie for their person, making a super-secret delivery.

To finish off the week, we held our annual R U OK? Day morning tea.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action, encouraging our community to ask important questions and start meaningful conversations with those

we care about. We aimed to acknowledge struggle, offer support, connect and check in, so this chance to chat was the perfect conclusion to a very memorable Spirit Week. Reflecting now, I‘d like to thank everyone for their involvement and share a reminder that ‘are you OK?’ is a conversation for every day, because there is no shame in asking, and no shame in replying honestly.

This year has been filled to the brim, but with our focus on wellbeing and community, we’ve gotten through many challenges together. So now, as we finish off the semester, it’s important to recharge and connect with friends and family. That’s all from me, but I’d like to welcome our new 2024 Wellbeing Representative, Joy Masek, who I know will continue to ensure this community remains happy and healthy.

Speaking from experience In August, students at UC were treated to a remarkable opportunity to hear from the renowned author, lawyer and editor, Alice Pung.

During her engaging discussion, Alice candidly shared her personal journey growing up in Australia as the child of Chinese-Cambodian immigrants, who fled the Killing Fields. She passionately delved into the hardships she has encountered along her path and her deep-seated desire to depict such experiences. Growing up, she didn’t recognise herself in many stories, something she has sought to rectify in her own work, which includes Unpolished Gem, Growing Up Asian in Australia, One Hundred Days and Laurinda.

Her discussion vividly communicated the unique challenges and triumphs she has experienced around identity, mental health and racism, shedding light on how this shaped her perspective on life. Alice also spoke about her latest children’s book, Be Careful, Xiao Xin!,

reflecting on the feeling of being torn between two cultures and learning to conquer your own fears.

Alice’s words left an impact on the UC students lucky enough to be in attendance, inspiring them with her observations, her commitment to

studies and her varied career path.

The event concluded with a delightful spread of cheese and desserts, providing an opportunity for students to further engage with Alice and ask any questions. We thank Alice for her honesty and transparency and taking the time to talk to our students.

MUSIC

Hitting the high notes UC performing at Battle of the Bands

This semester, as part of Spirit Week, we held a Pleasant Friday Afternoon event, which provides a chance for UC’s musicians to perform. The kitchen provided fresh goodies, including biscuits straight from the oven and classic sausage rolls. To accentuate the spirit, the dining hall where we held the performances was decorated in the UC colours.

The performances began with two amazing piano pieces performed by Levi Doble, who was on the synth in our Battle of the Bands group. Next up, Pearson Chambel (a new student this semester) sang some fantastic songs for us. Ella Grace then performed an original song that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Lucas Burke, one of our T-Birds from the Grease musical, sang and played piano. This was followed by Lachie Palmer, one of our fabulous singers from Battle of the Bands. Will Hamilton, who played Danny in Grease, continued the high standard of performances, bringing his guitar and voice to the stage. Finally, we were blessed with solo and duet performances from Jess Rothwell

The Pleasant Friday Afternoon was extremely successful and attracted a large and supportive crowd of students.

A huge thank you is in order for those who performed, or supported the performers from the audience, as well as the UC kitchen team for providing the treats.

The Battle of the Bands is a highly anticipated event every year, and as we were keen to improve our placing on last year, we held auditions early to ensure we were prepared! We had lots of talented students audition, which made it extremely difficult to choose the final group. However, we could not be more ecstatic with the group that was selected and after many rehearsals in the band shed, performance day arrived.

We began the day with a dress rehearsal in the band shed and then ventured into the city to visit Max Watts, where the performances would be happening that night. Our sound check gave us plenty of confidence heading into the competition and we were happy with our efforts. However, before we performed, there was one last thing to prepare – the eyeliner. Though this took many weeks of convincing, the band looked amazing with their smokey eyes and blazers on.

When it was time to perform, the energy from the UCers in the crowd was high and was only increased by the awesome introduction from Tenley, our ICAC representative. The band had unmatched stage presence and played our songs: All Falls Down (Kanye West), Treasure (Bruno Mars), Still Into You (Paramore) and In the Summertime (Thirsty Merc) outstandingly. Despite the competition being extremely accomplished, we still managed to achieve second place!

This is UC’s best placing in many years, and it was all due to the efforts of our band; Sophie Kelly, Lachie Palmer, Isaac Jansz, Jack Forsyth, Gus Leung, Lily Roehr, Levi Doble and Walter Coop. We are all very proud of them and how well they played.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Dresses and donations This semester, UCers continued to participate in community service initiatives, raising awareness and over $8,000 in funds for some great causes.

Charity Auction: On UC Day, we held a charity auction to raise money for the Cancer Council. Some of the items and experiences on offer included a Chef’s dinner (offering eight lucky students a personalised meal prepared by our wonderful Chef Hazel) as well as some highly sought-after costumes and set items from our production of Grease.

In total we raised $3,630 for Australians impacted by cancer.

‘Do It In A Dress’: From the 11-18th October, we participated in One Girl’s ‘Do It In A Dress’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness and funds for the more than 132 million girls being denied an education globally. UCers wore dresses during their everyday activities for a week to support education programs in Sierra Leone and Uganda.

I also wanted to give a special mention to Amy Florance, who ran a half marathon in her dress.

Blood Donations: This semester we continued to donate blood and plasma to Lifeblood Australia, with a total of 50 donations, equating to 150 lives saved this year.

I also wanted to mention the amazing efforts of Carly Rozitis in raising both awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research.

“This year I participated in a ‘Remember September’ fundraiser to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. It runs through the month of September to commemorate the lives of those who have passed away from this disease. Pancreatic cancer is now considered a common cancer, despite it having one of the lowest survival rates (about 12%). The disease has little to no symptoms and is not easily detectable. They hope to raise the rate of survival to about 30% by 2030. I participated in memory of my mum, who lost her battle with cancer in August this year. I raised over $1,000 and walked over 68km within the month for the cause. I also shaved my head in March for the World’s Greatest Shave and raised another $2,000. It means a lot to me to try and make a difference for families like mine.”

Celebrating notable results and unwavering spirit

Men’s football

The sporting year at University College has been characterised by a passionate commitment; it’s not always about securing the top spot, but about playing with heart and passion. Let’s dive deeper into the notable results and unmatched spirit of our athletes across various sports.

The UC men’s basketball team finished proudly in third place, after displaying remarkable efforts and persistence on the court throughout the competition.

Although they didn’t take the top position, their result is a testament to their basketball skills, teamwork and the sheer determination they brought to every match. Led by their coach, Will Zhang, and captain, Sam Crosthwaite, the men’s basketball team exhibited a winning spirit that inspired their peers and supporters.

The UC cricket team, who kicked off the intercollegiate sporting year under the captaincy of Jock Heinrich, also finished in a respectable third place. Their performance on the pitch showcased not only their cricketing abilities but their enjoyment for the game.

Similarly, the women’s volleyball team put up a strong effort and secured a commendable fourth place. The team, captained by Ruby Bouffler, played with heart and determination. Their teamwork and passion for the game made them intimidating opponents throughout the competition.

In swimming, the UC team delivered solid performances and, although not reaching the podium, they did UC proud and brought great excitement

to the spectators. The dedication of each swimmer to their sport was evident in every stroke.

The men’s soccer team, led by coaches Xavier Mitchell and Henry Hurd along with Captain Charlie Keogh, had an exciting competition. Their fourthplace finish doesn’t diminish their sportsmanship and the unforgettable moments they created on the pitch, most notably their win against Queens in a penalty shootout. Showing immense commitment, the team played off for third spot at 7am on the morning after the UC ball, but unfortunately fell just short. The women’s hockey team, guided by captain Jacinta Slattery, also secured a respectable fourth place.

EVENTS

Success in Scotland It’s not every day that a UC student leaves for Scotland and returns five weeks later with an impressive list of bagpipe accomplishments to their name.

Back in August, Hamish Hare set off for a trip that had been five years in the making and required many, many hours of practice and rehearsals. Hamish performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in twenty-seven performances, with the massed pipes and drums as part of the Scots School Albury pipe band.

They were the first Australian school band to win both the Scottish Championships and the World Pipe Band Championships in the same year. They also won the drumming for their grade, and are now holders of the title ‘Champion of Champions’.

UC students and staff were lucky enough to experience Hamish’s extraordinary talent when he played on Valedictory evening as he escorted the whole group to the Syme Dining Hall from the Giblin courtyard.

Ending the year on a high Throughout the year we were fortunate enough to have a number of eminent guests from the University of Melbourne join us at our High Table events and speak to our students.

In Semester 1 we welcomed Joanne Ligouris, Academic Registrar and Executive Director of Student and Scholarly Services, as well as Professor Paul Kofman, Dean of Business and Economics.

Semester 2 saw Vice-Chancellor, Professor Duncan Maskell, join us once again as well as UniMelb’s Provost, Professor Nicola Phillips.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF COUNCIL As my last term as President draws to a close, I reflect on where we have come from and what a good position we are in.

We started a few years ago as a relatively small college in need of a larger dining hall. This transformed into a major rebuild, increasing the size of the College by about one third, making us one of the larger colleges around the Crescent.

Through the disruption of the build, closely followed by the shock, anxiety and lockdowns of the pandemic, we maintained our caring, encouraging approach to all.

Students leaving today speak about their time at UC in words that mirror our stated purpose and values. They know they have had a transformative experience. They have discovered endless things about themselves and others and they are becoming equipped to encounter what the world has to offer.

Their academic results are something to be proud of and their growth as valuable humans is to be admired.

Council continues to work hard. A recent strategy planning day saw us come together to learn more about where we as individuals (and as a group) think the College is currently and where it will be heading in the future.

It was a worthwhile venture, bringing

the management team and Council together. A most constructive meeting that bodes well for our future.

All Council members sit on a committee and these committees continue to improve UC and its performance as a top tier residential college. The Governance Committee continues to review our policies to ensure they are up to date and appropriate.

In the lead up to our 90th anniversary, our Advancement Committee is planning for renewed connections with alumni we have lost touch with.

If you know of any friends from college that do not receive information from us, please let us know.

Building our scholarship program continues to be extremely important to us. Scholarships play such a vital part in our work to enable young people, who otherwise may not have the opportunity, to benefit from all that college has to offer.

The FRAC Committee continues to oversee our finances in a responsible manner. We have a strong and respectful relationship with our financiers at NAB and work together to ensure we can continue to maintain our facilities, whilst paying down our debt.

Alongside student wellbeing, we believe strongly in the welfare of our staff and look to improve their work lives as best we can. Professional development is one part of that and is encouraged as appropriate. We have a strong and stable leadership team and all our staff work together as a team.

A recent staff engagement survey shows healthy relationships, camaraderie and support between team members. In the new year we will hold workshops on effective communications and difficult conversations.

As always, I thank and commend Dr Jennifer McDonald and her team for the parts they play in producing well-rounded students each year, well-nourished in body and mind.

I had to laugh recently when we were discussing the benefits of our college, and someone mentioned double beds.

Immediately I thought that my mother would have been much more hesitant to send me to college in that case.

Dr Sarah Maskell The University College Council has recently appointed Dr Sarah Maskell as a Fellow of the College. Dr Maskell has enjoyed a distinguished career as a research scientist in the fields of microbiology, genetics and veterinary medicine. Her outstanding contribution to the wider community is also inspiring. She moved from the UK with her husband, Professor Duncan Maskell in September 2018 when he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

In recent years, Dr Maskell’s visits to the College have had a positive impact on our community. She always engages proactively with our students, taking an interest in their academic pursuits and other activities. Given the number of students studying microbiology and genetics, Dr Maskell is an excellent choice as a Fellow.

VALEDICTORY DINNER

A fond farewell to 2023 It is always delightful to watch the Giblin Courtyard fill with energetic chatter, bright colours and movement for the Valedictory Reception. This year, the courtyard walls were covered with perfectlytimed roses in bloom, and the pocket of warm weather ensured it was a fitting occasion to literally step out from the winter and embrace the spring.

The event began with an address from Dr Jennifer McDonald, Head of College, from the Ellis Balcony. Dr McDonald introduced Wurundjeri man, Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr Jnr, who spoke of his people’s connection to land and place and the significance of the smoking ceremony. As the scent of eucalyptus wafted through the silent courtyard, residents were encouraged to come forward and walk through the smoke as part of a symbolic cleansing and renewal. Our Indigenous Representative, Niamh Larkin, thanked Uncle Colin for coming to UC and inviting us to be part of such an important experience.

This year we were fortunate to have our resident bagpipe virtuoso, Hamish Hare, close the reception and lead the way to dinner. The beautiful room set up was perfectly complemented by the kitchen team’s menu and service.

From the vantage point of the High Table it was lovely to see people enjoying themselves, and to hear the joyful buzz of their conversation – just like a celebratory family dinner.

The formalities of the evening began with Dr McDonald acknowledging what it is that makes UC so special – its people. She spoke of the contribution that each person makes to UC and thanking those who are leaving us at the end of the year.

This was followed by the announcement of the evening’s awards. The first of these were the Leadership Awards, presented to Student Club President, Helena Haldane and Vice President, Peter Bowles. In her speech, Dr McDonald highlighted the incredible

personal strengths of each, and recognised how they have worked collaboratively with College staff, and represented and advocated for students’ interests.

The next award was the Senior Common Room (SCR) Award, designed to recognise a resident’s outstanding contribution to the academic life of the College. This year’s award recipient was Academic Representative, Sarah Roberts.

The final award for the evening was the Valedictory Award. This award is voted on by the undergraduate community and presented to the person who has

‘best represented student concerns, been involved in student administration and has made the most significant contribution to the student body as a whole during their residency.’ This year’s award was presented to Tenley Brandon.

Tenley’s nomination described how Tenley truly embodies the love, passion and die-hard spirit of UC, not only in her role as the Intercollegiate Activities and Culture (ICAC) Representative, but also in general, as a key member of the Student Club Executive, across her participation in various sports, music and creative events, in her library assistant role, and as founder of the UC Book Club (The Book Munchers).

The final formality for the night was the official handover from one Student Club to the next. Representing the 2023 Student Club, Helena reflected on her year and what she feels makes UC so unique, before handing over to incoming President, Antoinette Boxall.

Antoinette spoke of her honour to lead the executive team next year and the challenge and excitement of following in the footsteps of this year’s wonderful leaders.

The evening ended with an enthusiastic thanks to the kitchen team, and an invitation for residents to continue their celebrations together at the last Tern of the year.

Reflection and resilience The mulled wine flowed and Christmas cracker hats were donned as we welcomed back 60 recent alumni (who had left College in the last five years) to a Christmas in July celebration. Guests enjoyed a special family-style, Christmas themed feast prepared by the amazing UC kitchen team, while sharing stories and catching up with old friends.

In her remarks, Head of College, Dr Jennifer McDonald, reflected on the somewhat challenging times this group of UC alumni had lived through, including the major College renovations and the pandemic lockdowns. We were delighted to bring this group together in much happier circumstances and celebrate their shared connection with UC.

Sianyang Ow (UC 2006 – 2013)

Recently we had a visit from Dr Sianyang Ow, who holds the record as one of our longest residing students, staying at UC for eight years during his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees! It was great to show Sianyang around and ask him to reflect on his time with us.

What did you do when you left UC? After leaving UC I returned to Singapore.

Eventually I was employed as a scientist at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and I still work as a scientist in Singapore to this day; my focus is around developing biosensors.

Why did you choose to go abroad and would you recommend the experience?

I went to study overseas as I felt it would be a good experience to live and study abroad for a while as a student, just so I could see and experience more of the world beyond Singapore. I would definitely recommend it.

What are your career highlights or things you’re most proud of?

I am most proud of helping to set up

a new laboratory in Singapore. It was a laboratory for the diagnosis of COVID 19 during the early part of the pandemic.

What are your memories of UC? I have a lot of memories of UC, such as the pub crawl on orientation day and the pirate themed orientation party. I recall the first time using the UC salad bar and mistaking the tub of vegemite for Nutella, spreading a thick layer on my bread. I also have fond memories of Jimmy, our student club president, making amusing speeches about banoffee pie every time it was served at high table dinner.

I also recall once, during a heat wave, most of the students crowded in the library as it was one of the few cool places left – it was the most crowded the library ever got. I also remember our

late College cat Aggie. She was a stray, and although she didn’t officially reside at UC, she often hung out in the kitchen garden and was very friendly and liked to pose for pictures. I do miss Aggie.

Did your time at UC shape you as a person?

Yes, I feel I definitely became less introverted.

Anything else interesting that people might like to know about you?

If memory serves, I remember the ‘watch out for cyclists’ sign on the fence facing the tram stop was erected because I collided with a cyclist there and brought that incident up in a feedback session.

Vale Lesley Falloon OAM (née Keipert) 20/06/1920 – 17/08/2023

We pay tribute to University Women’s College (UWC) alumna, Lesley Falloon, who passed away in August aged 103.

A member of the second intake of students at UWC in 1938, Lesley arrived in Melbourne from Rupanyup in regional Victoria to study at the University of Melbourne. She graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science. She maintained a close circle of friends from her days at UWC in the late thirties and early forties and remained close to UC throughout her life.

Lesley made a direct contribution to the governance and administration of the College through 30 years of continuous service on the College Council.

She was first appointed to the Council in 1952, having been elected by College alumni. She remained as their representative until 1966, when she was elected by the College Governors. Her service as a nominee of the Governors continued until 1976, when she was elected by the Australian Federation of University Women, Victoria – an appointment which continued until 1978. Lesley was made a Governor of the College in that final year of service.

In 1979 she was co-opted to the College Council and continued to serve until September 1982. She was again elected to Council by the past students in 1985 and completed yet another year of dedicated service to the College, before stepping down in January 1986.

During this outstanding contribution to the governance of the College, Lesley held the positions of Vice President, Deputy President and President.

Lesley was a strong advocate for women, and her commitment to her local community saw her become a Councillor for the City of Sandringham in the 1980s and early 1990s. She twice acted as the Mayor of Sandringham.

She was recognised for her service to local government in the 1994 Australia Day Honours, awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). She was also awarded a Centenary Medal on 1 January 2001, and just prior to her 100th birthday she was awarded an Engaging Women’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her incredible service to the local community.

Despite her many commitments, Lesley always maintained an interest in UC, and was an active, eager and stimulating participant in College affairs through various alumni activities. We were thrilled to celebrate Lesley’s 90th birthday at College, and to be invited to celebrate her 100th birthday (despite it being a socially distanced celebration due to COVID).

We are grateful to have been part of Lesley’s life story and will miss her warm and generous spirit.

Senior Common Room members

Accomplishing more together In reflecting upon 2023 and what has taken place amongst the Senior Common Room (SCR) this year, I am simply in awe of being part of such a truly wonderful group of people. I am reminded that we can accomplish more together than we ever can alone. While each of us within the SCR come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, it is our ‘love, passion and die-hard spirit’ for each other and University College that unite us.

During our Valedictory Dinner, our final formal event for the academic year, I was reminded of this. Standing in the Giblin Courtyard basking in the delightful sunny weather, glass of sparkling in hand, I could not help but look around me and smile. I smiled as we all clinked glasses and cheered the year together – a year of challenges and camaraderie, of assessments and affinity, of learning and laughter.

Watching my fellow SCR members interact with each other and hearing laughter ring out around the courtyard, reminiscing on the year, reminded me of just how special a place University College is.

It is the people that truly make college what it is and the SCR is no exception.

Even the simple interactions that take place while watching a television program, movie, or sporting event are important; seeing a familiar and friendly face is always reassuring when up against assessment deadlines.

This semester, Shut Up & Write and Chat ‘n Chill have continued to be popular within the SCR. Junior Common Room (JCR) members were also provided with the opportunity to join the SCR for Shut Up & Write sessions, allowing for connections between the JCR and SCR to be further strengthened. While second semester can prove to be challenging in terms of opportunities for SCR members to catch up with each other, keeping

it simple in relation to running these two regular events for academic and social connections has proven to be beneficial. The SCR has also continued to welcome our Associate Members (non-Resident Tutors), ensuring they feel included as part of the SCR while also acknowledging their valuable contributions to the life of the College.

Finally, it has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve the SCR as President this year, and immensely rewarding. It’s been a joy getting to know everyone and I look forward to 2024.

Building networks An integral part of UC’s Academic Support Program is the first-year mentoring program, where each of our new first-year students is assigned a Resident Tutor as their mentor for the year. The aim of this program is to help these students in making the transition to university life, to facilitate their academic progress and to give them an understanding of the importance of cultivating professional mentors and networks.

During the academic year, the College organises various events in an effort to build stronger connections between the Senior Common Room (made up of the Head of College, Dean of Students, Dean of Studies, resident tutors and graduates) and the first-year UC students.

This semester, the UC academic team organised three mentor group afternoon teas, hosted at the Head of College’s Residence. Each afternoon tea was well attended and filled with exciting conversations and connections between the students and their mentors.
