Deeper Commitment for Good Local Governance

UCLG ASPAC and Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Republic of Indonesia, have reached a mutual understanding to reinforce the capacity and performance of local government in Indonesia in implementing their functions to the fulfillment of good local governance. The cooperation is further spelt out in the form of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was officially signed by both parties on 5 June 2017 at Jakarta City Hall.

Held in a formal ceremony, the MoU was signed between UCLG ASPAC, represented by Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary General, and MoHA, represented by Nelson Simanjuntak, Head of Center for Administration of Overseas Cooperation, witnessed by Saefullah, the Regional Secretary of Jakarta Provincial Government as the Host of UCLG ASPAC’s Secretariat.

The MoU signing was attended by 70 high-level apparatus of Jakarta Provincial Government and distinguished representatives of MoHA. In this opportunity, both parties expressed satisfaction on the signing, given the fact on the time that both have taken to reach the agreement. The MoU signing signifies a rooting commitment of the authorities in national level towards the implementation of good governance in sub-national level. In this occasion, Saefullah, representing the Governor of Jakarta, specifically expressed his gratitude to continuous assistance provided by UCLG ASPAC. Among many, those include synchronizing 17 SDGs with local development plan, promoting Jakarta’s innovative child-friendly public space, assisting in old town revitalization, etc.

Jakarta Provincial Government is a founder member of UCLG ASPAC. Its engagement with UCLG started when Jakarta hosted the Secretariat of IULA ASPAC in the 1980s, followed by their merge with the United Town Organisations (UTO) and Metropolis in 2004.
