UCLA’S COACHES
ARMEN KIRAKOSSIAN
UCLA Men’s Golf Head Coach, 3rd Season
Alma Mater: UT Pan American ’10
Armen Kirakossian enters his third season as the UCLA men’s golf head coach in 2024-25. He was selected to lead UCLA’s program on June 13, 2022, and has made an immediate impact in Westwood in his first two seasons.
Kirakossian has had the Bruins playing their best golf in years, having concluded a successful 2023-24 campaign with an NCAA Regional berth, numerous individual accolades and new single-season records. UCLA placed third or better in four tournaments and finished runnerup at the highly-competitive Thunderbird Collegiate in its final regular-season event. The Bruins concluded the season under par as a team (-38) across 12 stroke play tournaments, marking the first time achieving that feat since 2018-19. Other top team finishes came at the Southwestern Invitational (t-3rd) to begin the spring and the Hamptons Intercollegiate (3rd) and The Cal Poly Invitational (2nd) in the fall. At the Southwestern Invitational, two Bruins placed in the top 10 to help UCLA momentarily grab hold of the lead in the final round and eventually place above four top-25 programs. The Bruins scorched Maidstone Golf Club at the Hamptons Intercollegiate to shoot -20 over 54 holes and finish four strokes behind the tournament champion. UCLA’s season ended at the Stanford Regional where they finished five strokes shy of the cut line to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Omar Morales secured third-team GCAA All-America honors as a junior, becoming the first UCLA All-America selection under Kirakossian’s watch. In the Pac-12 awards circuit, Morales captured first-team honors and junior Pablo Ereño and freshman Luke Powell both secured second-team acclaim. That marked the first time in their careers that they received allconference recognition. The three All-Pac-12 Team nods were UCLA’s most since the 2012-13 season. Morales and Powell were also tabbed to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, the most prestigious award in collegiate men’s golf, heading into the Spring 2024 season. The duo marked the first time a UCLA golfer was selected to that watch list since 2015-16.
Ereño, Morales and Powell shined in 2023-24. Morales was UCLA’s top individual performer for a second straight season. The Mexican set program single-season records for scoring average (69.9), rounds under par (25) and rounds in the 60s (19), and recorded a teambest seven top-10 finishes. Ereño’s marks were just as impressive as he improved his play significantly in UCLA’s spring season. The Spaniard posted a 70.78 scoring average which was good for fifth-best in UCLA single-season history and ranked second on the squad behind Morales with six top 10s, eight top 20s, 22 rounds under par and 15 rounds in the 60s. Ereño was the Bruins’ top finisher in five of the eight spring events. Powell put forth one of the most dominant freshman campaigns in UCLA history with three top-3 finishes, including a medal, in his first four collegiate events. Fall 2023 was highlighted by back-to-back individual wins from Powell and Morales. Powell, in just his second tournament, shot -17, 199 (64-67-68) to secure his first title at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 3. Powell’s 54-hole score in relation to par was the second lowest in program history and his total score of 199 is tied for the third lowest 54-hole mark in program history. On Oct. 15, Morales claimed his second career medal in UCLA’s next event at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate where he shot -11, 205 (68-68-69).
Morales continued to represent UCLA on the sport’s highest level with a second-straight U.S. Open berth at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2024. He also competed in his second PGA TOUR event at the Mexico Open and put on an impressive showing at the Latin America Amateur Championships where he placed runner-up.
Kirakossian, who owns 10 total years of collegiate coaching experience, led the Bruins to three top-five team finishes in his first year at the helm of the program in 2022-23. The 202223 season was highlighted by t-5th mark at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational where two Bruins, Ereño and Morales, finished in the top 20. Morales was the most impressive individual performer in Kirakossian’s debut season. After finishing 89th in his first event of the season, Morales improved in each tournament, culminating in the first medal of his collegiate career at the El Macero Classic. Ten days later, Morales competed in his first PGA TOUR event at the Mexico Open. Morales qualified for the 123rd U.S. Open on June 5, 2023, after winning his qualifying round at Hillcrest Country Club.
Before UCLA, Kirakossian spent five seasons at Arizona State, two as associate head coach and three as an assistant. He helped lead the Sun Devils to four consecutive NCAA Championship
appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2021-22 and a third-place showing in 2020-21. During Kirakossian’s tenure, Arizona State produced more All-Pac-12 honorees (17) than any other school in the conference. In 2021-22, the Sun Devils boasted a Pac-12-leading four first-team selections, the most by an ASU team since 1993-94.
Following the 2018-19 season, Kirakossian was named a Strickland Award Winner as the top assistant coach in the country. He coached three consecutive Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year award-winners from 2019-22 in Cameron Sisk (2019), David Puig (2021) and Preston Summerhays (2022), and a total of 11 All-Americans at Arizona State. Under Kirakossian and head coach Matt Thurmond, the Sun Devils ranked in the top 10 in the final Golfweek Rankings in each of the final four seasons. In addition, Arizona State won 15 team tournaments and 15 individual titles over his five seasons in Tempe, Ariz.
Prior to coaching at Arizona State, Kirakossian was an assistant coach for Pepperdine University from 2015-17. While at Pepperdine, Kirakossian helped oversee a turnaround in the Waves’ program with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, its best mark since 2005. Pepperdine ranked 19th in the final Golfweek rankings for a 59-spot improvement from when Kirakossian joined the program.
Several individuals shined under Kirakossian’s leadership at Pepperdine, including Hogan and Nicklaus award winner Sahith Theegala, who regularly competes on the PGA Tour. At Arizona State, Chun An Yu became the No. 1 amateur in the world by the end of the 2019-20 season. Kirakossian also brings head coaching experience. Before his time at Pepperdine, Kirakossian was the head coach at his alma mater, Texas Pan American (UTPA), where he led the Broncos to three top-five finishes in 2014-15. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at UTPA in 2012-13 prior to being hired as head coach in August 2014. One of Kirakossian’s student-athletes, Nicolas Paltret, won the Western Athletic Conference’s individual crown and advanced to an NCAA Regional, becoming the school’s first student-athlete to participate in the NCAAs since 1978.
Kirakossian was a member of UTPA’s golf team, earning first-team all-conference and GCAA All-American Scholar honors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2010.
MASON BANGER
UCLA Men’s Golf Assistant Coach, 2nd Season
Alma Mater: Harding ’18
Mason Banger enters his second season as an assistant coach with the UCLA men’s golf team in 2024-25. He joined the Bruins’ program in July of 2023, working alongside head coach Armen Kirakossian.
Banger and Kirakossian have positioned UCLA to play their best golf in years, having concluded a successful 2023-24 season with an NCAA Regional berth, numerous individual accolades and new single-season records. In Banger’s first year with the program, UCLA placed third or better in four tournaments and finished as the runner-up at the highly-competitive Thunderbird Collegiate in its final regular-season event. The Bruins concluded the season under par as a team (-38) across 12 stroke play tournaments, marking the first time achieving that feat since the 2018-19 campaign.
In 2023-24, Omar Morales secured third-team GCAA All-America acclaim as a junior. Morales secured first-team All-Pac-12 honors, while junior Pablo Ereño and freshman Luke Powell both earned second-team acclaim. UCLA’s three All-Pac-12 selections marked the most allconference honorees for the program since 2012-13. In addition, Morales and Powell were also tabbed to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, the most prestigious award in collegiate men’s golf, heading into the Spring 2024 season.
Ereño, Morales and Powell shined for UCLA in 2023-24. Morales was UCLA’s top individual performer for a second straight season. He set program single-season records for scoring average (69.9), rounds under par (25) and rounds in the 60s (19), and recorded a teambest seven top-10 finishes. Ereño’s marks were just as impressive, as he improved his play significantly in UCLA’s spring season. He posted a 70.78 scoring average, good for fifth-best in UCLA single-season history, and he ranked second on the squad behind Morales with six top 10s, eight top 20s, 22 rounds under par and 15 rounds in the 60s. Morales claimed his second career medal in UCLA’s next event at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (Oct. 15, 2023), where he shot -11, 205 (68-68-69).
Banger arrived to Westwood with three and a half seasons of NCAA Division I and II coaching experience. Most recently, Banger spent the spring of 2022 and the entire 2022-23 season at Abilene Christian, where he helped the Wildcats to the 2022 Western Athletic Conference Championship in their first year in the new league. That also marked Abilene Christian’s first men’s golf conference title as a Division I program.
The Wildcats finished 2021-22 with a 10th-place finish in the NCAA Stockton Regional. Abilene Christian placed eighth at the 2023 WAC Championship after graduating five key members from the previous season’s squad.
Prior to coaching at Abilene Christian, Banger served as a coach at Louisiana in 2020-21. The Ragin’ Cajuns posted four top-five finishes, including a season-best runner-up placement at the Louisiana Classics on their home course at Oakbourne Country Club.
In the 2018-19 campaign, Banger served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Harding University (Division II), where he understudied head coach Dustin Howell, who had led the Bison’s men’s golf program for 15 seasons.
Banger competed at Harding from 2014-18, setting the program career record for wins (3), stroke average (73.99), rounds under par (27), rounds played (112) and best winning percentage (.776). He was a three-time All-Great American Conference golfer, including firstteam accolades in 2018 when he also earned PING All-Central Region honors.
A team captain at Harding, Banger was an academic all-conference selection and a 2018 Srixon/Cleveland Golf and GCAA All-American Scholar Athlete. He also served as caddy for English professional golfer Harry Ellis at the 2018 U.S. Open and 2018 Memorial Tournament.

UCLA’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
1988 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
In 1988, the UCLA men’s golf team won the program’s first team championship at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
Trailing by 13 shots entering the final day of the tournament, the Bruins rallied for one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA golf history. UCLA shot a 3-over 287 over the final 18 holes to win the national championship by three shots over Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and UTEP.
The Bruins’ Brandt Jobe fired a final-round, 2-under 69 to finish tied for second (+3, 287), which at that point was the best individual finish ever for a UCLA golfer at the NCAA Championships. Although no other Bruin finished among the Top 20, clutch performances, especially on the final day, produced one of the most memorable championship moments in UCLA history.
Kevin Leach, who won twice on the season and had eight top 10 finishes, secured secondteam All-America honors and was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection. Bobby Lasken, who also won a tournament, was an honorable mention All-America selection and second-team AllPac-10 honoree. Jobe also was named an honorable mention All-America recipient.
2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Senior Kevin Chappell made a par on the 18th hole to give UCLA a one-shot victory over Stanford on May 31, 2008 at the 111th NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, hosted by Purdue at its Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
Chappell won the individual title and led the fourth-ranked Bruins to their first men’s golf championship since 1988. He finished at 2-under 286 and was the only player in the field under par for the event. He became the first UCLA player to win NCAA medalist honors.
“The feeling I have right now is better than anything,” Chappell said. “To win individually is great, but it becomes even more special because the team also won. I can’t say enough about this team. All season long we’ve always been there to pick each other up and that’s what championship teams do.”
In the third round, Chappell made a round-saving bogey from knee-high rough at the 18th hole. That score helped him post a cool 68 (-4) and assume first place entering the final round.
At the time, Chapppell had called it “the best bogey of my life.” He amended that statement after the final round with a bogey that preserved the Bruins’ national championship. At the 71st hole, a 230-yard par 3 over water, Chappell dumped his tee shot in the hazard. His third shot from the drop area skirted 22 paces past the hole -- almost a certain double-bogey.
“I knew he could get it up and down from there,” said head coach Derek Freeman. “I figured we’d take a five and move on to 18.”
The two-time All-American chipped it in.
“That was the best bogey of my entire life,” Chappell said.
Chappell had struggled most of the week at the 18th hole. In the second round, he came to the 484-yard par 4 at 1-under par. A double-bogey gave him a 73 (+1). His bogey there in the third round prevented him from carding a 67 (-5).
And in the final round, he knew a par would preserve the Bruins’ precarious one-shot lead and their championship dreams. His tee shot found the fairway, leaving him 189 yards to the green. His second shot landed 20 feet above the hole. He barely missed making a birdie, but tapped in for par before the entire UCLA entourage charged the green to embrace their senior leader.
“This is huge for our school which prides itself on national championships,” Coach Freeman said. “Now, I want to figure out how to get better because I sure like this feeling.”
Senior Craig Leslie’s birdies at the 16th and 18th holes proved crucial to the Bruins’ title hopes, as well as key par saves on the final holes by junior Erik Flores and freshman Philip Francis.
