SEASON OUTLOOK

UCLA Rowing Seeks Continued Success on National Scene

With veteran nucleus returning from last season’s successful team, UCLA looks to future with optimism, high expectations.

Having advanced to the NCAA Championships in two of the last three seasons, the UCLA women’s rowing program has established itself as a national competitor. Led by 12th-year head coach Amy Fuller Kearney, the Bruins’ program certainly is trending in the right direction and with 10 fourth-year seniors returning in 2013, UCLA has high hopes and elevated expectations this spring.

Last season, UCLA finished eighth as a team at NCAA Championships, its highest championship finish in program history after having finished 12th at the national event in 2010. UCLA’s second varsity eight finished sixth in the Grand Final (places 1-6), while the varsity eight finished seventh in the Petite Final (places 7-12).

“It was a great performance last year for our program,” Fuller Kearney said. “We really overperformed in terms of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, which is always the goal, especially in this sport.”

Fuller Kearney and the Bruins are most encouraged by the veteran depth returning to this year’s team. In addition to 10 fourth-year seniors back for their final season, UCLA is encouraged by talented juniors Kat Lauer, Carolina Paini, Natalie Pettee, Nicole Sung-Jereczek and Erin Wenzel.

“Everybody is a key returner for us right now because last year’s team performed so well,” Fuller Kearney said. “But there are some veterans that we know will be capable of returning in both the varsity and second varsity eight boats. Several freshmen and transfer students have worked very hard in the offseason and are more than capable of filling in spots in the eights.”

Among UCLA’s group of fourth-year seniors, the Bruins are counting on Jessica McGuire, Alexa Farafontoff, Hillary Caldwell, Kirsten Snook and Britta Syverson to continue challenging for seats in the varsity eight. Mia Hamano will return as UCLA’s coxswain in the varsity eight. Farafontoff, Caldwell, McGuire and Paini all helped the second varsity secure a sixth-place finish in the second eight at NCAA Championships last year.

Syverson, Lauer, Wenzel, Sung-Jereczek, Snook and Hamano rowed in the varsity eight at NCAA Championships.

Freshman Alice White, junior Meaghan Volker and sophomore Kate Miller are three competitors who have the potential to join either the varsity or second varsity eight crews. Miller rowed in the novice eight last season, while White and Volker are new additions to the Bruins’ program in 2013. White arrives at UCLA from Hamilton, New Zealand, where she attended Hillcrest High School. Volker transferred to UCLA as a junior after having studied at the University of Tasmania in Australia.

“We are excited to have that youth and enthusiasm in there, particularly with Alice, Meaghan and Kate,” Fuller Kearney said. “Meaghan is a very strong, very solid performer who is among the top athletes in our weight room. Kate has moved the boat very well and it’s a credit to her that during the summer she really committed herself to training and getting better.”

Syverson, a senior from Minneapolis, Minn., and Paini, a junior from Costa Mesa, Calif., competed in the summer of 2012 on the U.S. Under-23 National Lightweight Team. Syverson and Paini rowed in the quadruple sculls for the United States in Trakai, Lithuania. In the summer of 2011, Syverson competed for the Under-23 team in the double sculls in Amsterdam.

“Carolina Paini and Natalie Pettee will probably in one of our two varsity boats,” Fuller Kearney said. “Right now, they’re sitting in the stern pair that won the second eight at the San Diego Crew Classic last season, so we are very excited to see how that rhythm will work.”

Hamano will be expected to lead a group of young coxswain. A fourth-year senior from Piedmont, Calif., Hamano directed the Bruins’ varsity eight during UCLA’s historic season last spring. Others expected to vie for spots in the second varsity eight and varsity four coxswain seats include sophomores Katie Shurtleff, Chloe Kojima, Maddie Alden.

Kojima served as the Bruins’ coxswain in the varsity four at Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Championships in 2012, while Shurtleff coxed the Bruins’ novice eight through the majority of last season.

“We have a very good corps of coxswain, with Mia as a senior and our three sophomores – Katie, Chloe and Maddie,” Fuller Kearney said. “People really trust Mia’s calls, that if she’s making a call, it’s the right one. For our younger coxswains, it’s a learning process and those three have really shown significant improvements in the coxswain seat.”

In addition to a strong group of veteran rowers, at the senior, junior and sophomore levels, UCLA looks for its incoming freshmen to provide a significant boost to the team’s depth. The Bruins’ latest incoming class features over 20 freshmen, and competition for seats in the team’s novice eight crew has been very strong.

“We are very excited about this freshman class, and those rowers are going to have a chance to prove themselves right out of the gate this season,” Fuller Kearney said. “They’ll have a chance to perform at the Pac-12 Championships, and we’re excited to see what they can do not just this season but also down the road in their UCLA careers.”

FULLER KEARNEY HEAD COACH 12th Season UC Santa Barbara ’90 Amy Fuller Kearney enters her 12th season at the helm of the UCLA women’s rowing program in 2012-13 and has established the Bruins as a national competitor. After having made a successful transition from a club team to a varsity program in 2001-02, UCLA earned its first-ever team bid to the NCAA Championships in May 2010 and returned to the national event in May 2012.

In 2012, UCLA secured an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the best team result in program history. The varsity eight finished first in the Petite Final (places 7-12), besting Stanford, Harvard, Ohio State, Cornell and Yale. The Bruins’ second varsity eight finished sixth in the Grand Final, and the varsity four finished first in the Petite Final. In 2010, the Bruins finished 12th overall at the NCAA Championships.

Additionally, Fuller Kearney guided the Bruins’ varsity eight crew to an at-large selection at the NCAA Championships in three consecutive seasons (200507). The eight crew’s highest finish in that three-year span was a 12th place finish in 2006. UCLA’s eight finished ninth at the 2010 NCAA Championships, placing higher than any Pac-12 program in the Petite Final.

Fuller Kearney led the Bruins’ varsity and second varsity eights to the Pac-10 Championship Grand Final from 2004 through 2007. In 2010, UCLA’s varsity four finished third while the program’s varsity eight was fourth, allowing the Bruins to earn a fifthplace team finish at the conference championships.

Midway through the 2012 spring season, the Bruins had attained the No. 3 national ranking, UCLA’s highest ranking in school history (CRCA/USRowing Poll). In addition, UCLA has secured a ranking as high as No. 11 in 2010, No. 13 in 2008 and 2009, and No. 17 in 2011.

In 2012, UCLA finished third at Pac-12 Championships, posting its highest-ever finish since the rowing program was elevated to varsity status in 2001-02. The varsity eight finished fourth while the second varsity and varsity four posted thirdplace finishes. UCLA’s performance at the 2012 conference championships was its best since winning the event in 1991.

In 2011, the Bruins kicked off the spring season with back-to-back victories over Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. UCLA’s novice eight then earned consecutive victories over Pac-12 foes California and Stanford. The Bruins varsity eight earned a second place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic while the varsity four and novice eight squads took home second place as well. At the Virginia Invitational, UCLA’s second varsity eight earned a victory over Texas while the varsity four defeated the Clemson Tigers on the final day of competition. In 2010, UCLA registered dual-meet victories against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the spring season. The varsity eight defeated Clemson and Notre Dame at the SoCal Challenge before cruising past Oregon State and San Diego the next week in Dexter Lake, Ore.

In 2006, the first eight raced to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. UCLA began the 2006 spring season earning first-place dual-meet finishes against Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Minnesota before posting a sixth-place finish at Pac-10 Championships in May. At the San Diego Crew Classic, UCLA advanced to the Grand Final in all three events and finished fifth in the varsity eight race. The Bruins finished first in all four events at the Miller Cup, and later capped their season with a strong performance at the NCAA Championships.

UCLA’s fifth-place team finish at Pac-10 Championships was highlighted by a third-place effort from from the varsity four. Six Pac-10 teams earned berths to the NCAA Championships, as UCLA secured its first team berth in program history. At the NCAA Championships, UCLA varsity eight finished third in its first-day elimination heat, allowing the crew to advance to Saturday’s semifinal.

After a fifth-place finish in the semifinal, the varsity eight closed its season with a third-place finish in the Petite Final.

In 2009, the Bruins opened the season with strong dual-meet wins against local opponents Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. UCLA’s varsity eight won races on consecutive days against No. 12 Ohio State and No. 13 Clemson, respectively, at the Pac-10 Challenge. The Bruins finished strong at the San Diego Crew Classic, as the first eight raced to a first-place finish in the Petite Final, while the second eight cruised to a third-place finish. On day two of the Lake Natoma Challenge, UCLA’s first eight won its heat against Minnesota and Tennessee. At the season-culminating Pac-10 Championships, the varsity eight win the petite final while the second eight finished in second place.

At season’s end, Vanessa Teff secured CRCA AllWest Region honors and All-Pac-10 accolades for a school-record fourth consecutive season. In addition, five Bruins were honored as CRCA National ScholarAthlete selections. Three of those student-athletes were also selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic team.

In 2008, UCLA opened its spring campaign with dominating dual-meet victories over Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. The Bruins’ first eight also claimed dual-meet wins over the University of Victoria and the University of Central Florida. The second eight rowed to wins over Saint Mary’s first eight and the University of Central Florida. Both crews had strong performances at the San Diego Crew Classic. The first eight placed fifth overall in the invitation-only Jessop-Whittier Cup while the second eight finished sixth in the race for the Hungness Trophy. Both eights finished their seasons with wins in the petite final at the Pac-10 Championships.

For the third consecutive year, Vanessa Teff earned Pocock All-America honors, CRCA All-West Region accolades and All-Pac-10 honors. Eight Bruins were named All-Pac-10 Academic selections.

Under the guidance of Fuller Kearney in 2007, UCLA’s varsity eight crew advanced to the NCAA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., finishing 14th overall. Fuller Kearney guided UCLA to first-place finishes in back-to-back dual meets against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the season.

In the fourth weekend of the season, the Bruins performed well at the San Diego Crew Classic, placing its varsity crews fourth and third, respectively, in the grand finals. Midway through the season, UCLA’s second varsity raced past USC in the annual dual

In the spring of 2005, the Bruins sent an at-large eight to the NCAA Championships, where UCLA finished 15th overall. That spring, UCLA reached the Grand Final in every event at the Pac-10 Championships.

The first eight raced to a top-16 ranking and an at-large invite to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. The second eight made history, bringing home a silver medal from the Pac10 Championships, a first at UCLA since rowing was elevated to NCAA varsity status.

Named UCLA’s head coach on July 2, 2001 – the sport’s inaugural NCAA season – Fuller Kearney came to Westwood after having served one year as assistant coach for the Stanford women’s crew program (2000-01). At Stanford, she guided the Cardinal to its first top-20 national ranking in the program’s NCAA history.

Prior to serving as assistant coach at Stanford, Fuller Kearney was an assistant coach at San Diego State for two years (1998-2000). She worked with the Aztecs while training for the 2000 Olympics with the U.S. National Team. Fuller Kearney has also spent time working as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (1996-98) and for the U.S. National Team (1997).

From 1993-96, Fuller Kearney served as a motivational speaker for Champion International, a U.S. Rowing sponsor. She began her coaching career at UC Santa Barbara, her alma mater. From 1990-91, she led the women’s novice program. Two years later, from 1992-93, she was the head coach of the women’s team.

A three-time Olympian and world record holder, Fuller Kearney has accrued a strong national and international rowing background. In 1993, she earned U.S. Rowing Female Athlete of the Year honors. Two years later, she was a finalist for the Sullivan Award, presented annually to the nation’s top amateur athlete. She spent the fall and winter of 1995 competing with the America’s Cup Syndicate, America 3. She was a member of the first ever allwomen’s team to challenge for the America’s Cup. As a starboard aft grinder, Fuller Kearney used her strength and endurance to earn a starting spot among the world’s top female sailors. In the spring and summer, Fuller Kearney again turned her focus to rowing and helped the women’s eight to a World Championship in Tampere, Finland.

Fuller Kearney earned trips to the Olympics in 1992, 1996, and 2000. In 1992, she brought home a silver medal in the Women’s 4-. In 1996 and 2000, she placed in the top 6 in the Women’s 8+.

Additionally, Fuller Kearney has competed in eight World Championships, earning one gold medal and six silver medals (1989, 1991, 1993-94, 199798 and 1999). An extension of Fuller Kearney’s international experience includes the Goodwill

COACHING STAFF Games, the Lucerne International Regatta, and the Henley Royal Regatta. At the 1994 Goodwill Games, her women’s 8+ team captured the bronze.

Competing at the Lucerne International Regatta (1991, 1994-96 and 1998), she brought home five medals - three gold, one silver, and one bronze.

At the 1998 Henley Royal Regatta, Fuller Kearney added another gold medal.

Fuller Kearney continued her rowing success at the C.R.A.S.H. B Sprints. She was the 2000 and 2001 World Record holder on the rowing ergometer and placed first for open women. On the national level, Fuller Kearney rowed for the U.S. National Team for

11 years (1989, 1991-2000). During this era, she recorded 12 gold medals, two silver and one bronze.

As a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara, Fuller Kearney discovered a passion for rowing. She later earned one gold medal and one bronze medal on the collegiate national level. In 1990, she was honored with the school’s Associated Students Athlete of the Year Award. In 2006, Fuller Kearney was an inaugural inductee into the UC Santa Barbara Recreational Sports Hall of Fame.

Fuller Kearney has also been certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health Fitness Instructor and is a U.S. Rowing certified coach. She resides in Newhall, Calif., with her husband, Joe, and daughter, Shannon.

Price served as the freshman/novice coach for the men’s rowing program at Notre Dame from 2005-2008, working primarily with walk-on athletes. He helped lead the Notre Dame novice crews to their best finishes in program history.

During the 2007-08 season at Notre Dame, Price coached two national championship novice crews as his student-athletes won both the novice eight and novice lightweight four at the American Collegiate Rowing Association’s (ACRA) National Championship Regatta. Price’s crews finished third overall in the team points competition at the 2008 ACRA Regatta.

Justin Price enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the UCLA women’s rowing team in 2012-13.

Over the past three seasons at UCLA, Price has been instrumental in the development of UCLA’s freshmen and novice rowers.

Price led Notre Dame to similar success in 2008-09. That year, he recruited the largest group of freshman/novice athletes in team history and coached three novice eights. Price’s novice rowers showcased their depth at the 2009 ACRA Regatta, leading the Fighting Irish to a second place finish in the overall team points competition. The novice lightweight four won the event for the second consecutive year, the first novice eight finished in third place and the second novice eight finished second.

Price’s primary responsibilities include identification, development and coaching of all walk-on athletes. Price also coordinates recruiting efforts for the program’s nonrowing athletes. Off the water duties include the management and maintenance of equipment and gear.

Price rowed for the UCLA men’s team before graduating in 2006. Prior to arriving at UCLA in the summer of 2009, he spent the three seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s rowing program at the University of Notre Dame.

Price spent four years (2003-06) rowing in UCLA’s men’s program. As a Bruin oarsman, he stroked the novice eight as a freshman and rowed in the varsity eight his final three seasons. In 2006, Price earned the bronze medal rowing in the men’s varsity four at the Pac-10 Championships. He received the Coach’s Award for his performance and leadership in 2004-05. In addition, Price was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Team selection – first team (2005, 2006) and honorable mention (2004).

In 2012, Price worked with novice crews that earned multiple victories and sustained success. UCLA’s novice eight finished second at the Pac-12 Championships, helping the team earn a third-place finish, UCLA’s highest since the women’s program was elevated to varsity status in 2001-02. The novice bested USC’s crew at the annual crosstown race by more than 35 seconds. In addition, the Bruins’ novice eight finished second in its final heat the San Diego Crew Classic.

Price graduated from UCLA in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He earned his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Notre Dame in 2009.

In 2010, Price helped lead the novice crew to multiple victories. After opening the spring season with convincing dual-meet wins over local foes Loyola Marymount and San Diego State, the novice eight earned a second-place finish in the Grand

At the elite level, Burke has spent the past five summers rowing at GMS in Connecticut, medaling in several national regattas. Her international results include winning the silver medal at the 2009 U-23 World Championships in the Lightweight Women’s Quad and winning the gold medal in the Lightweight Women’s Single at the 2009 SilverSkiff Regatta in Turin, Italy.

BURKE

ASSISTANT COACH 1st Season Virginia ’09

Burke won the silver medal at the 2010 Senior World Championships in New Zealand, competing in the Lightweight Women’s Quad.

Victoria Burke enters her first season as an assistant women’s rowing coach at UCLA. She joined the staff on a full-time basis in July 2012 and will oversee UCLA’s novice rowers and assist with recruiting efforts.

Burke also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. U-23 Lightweight Women’s Quad in the summer of 2012, overseeing a team that competed in Trakai, Lithuania at the 2012 U-23 World Rowing Championships. UCLA junior Carolina Paini was one of the competitors on that crew that Burke coached that summer.

Burke arrived at UCLA after having worked as an assistant coach at her alma mater, the University of Virginia, during the 2011-12 school year and helped the Cavaliers win their second consecutive NCAA Division I Championship.

Burke graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art history and a minor in Italian from the University of Virginia in 2009 and competed for Saugatuck Rowing Club.

As a student-athlete at Virginia, Burke competed in three NCAA Championships, leading the varsity eight to a second-place finish in June 2009 and winning the NCAA Division I Team title in 2010.

The Conference of Champions ABOUT THE PAC-12 CONFERENCE Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Conference ushered in a new era on July 1, 2011, officially becoming the Pac-12 Conference with the addition of the University of Colorado and University of Utah.

Just 27 days after the Conference officially changed its name, Commissioner Larry Scott announced the creation of the Pac-12 Networks on July 27, 2011, solidifying a landmark television deal and putting the Conference on the forefront. The Networks, including one national network and six regional networks, in conjunction with four of the nation’s largest cable operators, marked the first time a U.S. collegiate conference or any other programmer has launched a collection of networks across a variety of platforms, rather than a sole network. In addition, the “TV everywhere” rights will allow fans to access coverage outside the home on any digital device, including smartphones and tablet computers.

On the field, the Pac-12 rises above the rest, upholding its tradition as the “Conference of Champions” ®, claiming an incredible 119 NCAA team titles since 1999-2000, including nine in 2011-12. That is an average of over nine championships per academic year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success, with championships coming in 28 different men’s and women’s sports. The Pac-12 has led or tied the nation in NCAA Championships in 46 of the last 52 years. The only exceptions being

in 1980-81, 1988-89, 1990-91 and 1995-96 when the Conference finished second, and only twice finished third (1998-99 and 2004-05).

For the seventh straight year, the Pac-12 had the most NCAA titles or tied for the most of any conference in the country, winning at least six every year since 2000-01. No other conference has won double-digit NCAA crowns in a single year, the Pac12 doing so six times (with a record 14 in 1996-97).

Spanning nearly a century of outstanding athletics achievements, the Pac-12 was the first conference to reach 400 championships in 2010-11. With the inclusion of Colorado and Utah, the Conference surpassed another major milestone, with league teams capturing 450 titles, outdistancing the next conference by nearly 200. In all, Conference teams have won 451 NCAA Championships (306 men’s, 145 women’s).

The Conference’s reputation is further proven in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition, the prestigious award that honors the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.

Stanford continued its remarkable run and won its unprecedented 18th-consecutive Directors’ Cup in 2011-12. For the second-straight year, six of the top 25 Division I programs were Pac-12 member institutions: No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 7 USC, No. 11 California, No. 19 Arizona and No. 24 Oregon. With three teams in the top 10, it was the most of any conference.

The Conference’s nine national titles came in the form of five women’s and four men’s crowns. Six different schools claimed NCAA titles and, of the five NCAA institutions to have won multiples titles, three were from the Pac-12.

In addition to the nine national championships, the Pac-12 also had runners-up in eight NCAA Championship events: women’s volleyball (USC), cross country (Washington), men’s water polo (UCLA), skiing (Utah), women’s tennis (UCLA), women’s track & field (Oregon), men’s volleyball (USC) and women’s water polo (USC). Overall, the Conference had 39 teams finish in the top four at 25 NCAA Championship events.

Participation in the postseason was a common occurrence for the Pac-12 in 2011-12. Of the 22 sports sponsored by the Conference, 14 witnessed at least half its teams participating in NCAA or other postseason action. The men sent 53 of a possible 101 teams into the postseason (52.4 percent), while the women sent 67 of a possible 113 teams (59.3 percent).

BLOCK CHANCELLOR 6th Year Stanford ’70 Dr. Gene Block became chancellor of UCLA in August 2007 and enters his six year as the university’s chief executive officer.

In his current capacity, Chancellor Block oversees all aspects of the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service.

A champion of public universities, Chancellor Block has set four major priorities for UCLA during his administration: academic excellence, diversity, civic engagement and financial security. He has called for UCLA to deepen its engagement with the Los Angeles region and to increase access for students from underrepresented populations.

Chancellor Block holds UCLA faculty appointments in psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and in physiological science in the College of Letters and Science. He also heads a research laboratory on campus that is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Previously, he served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon.

Chancellor Block and his wife, Carol, have two adult children. The Blocks are avid Bruin fans and attend the competitions of various Bruin athletic programs.

GUERRERO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 10th Year UCLA ’74 Daniel G. Guerrero was named UCLA’s eighth Director of Athletics on April 25, 2002. A former Bruin baseball player, Guerrero, who assumed his duties on July 1, 2002, has enjoyed great success and exudes the pride of a student-athlete who is in charge of the program at his alma mater.

Guerrero is one of the most respected administrators in all of intercollegiate athletics. He is the current president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and serves on numerous conference and national committees.

He currently is a member of the Pac-12 Nominating Committee, the Pac-12 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee, the Pac-12 Bowls Committee, the Pac-12 Basketball Tournament Committee.

In addition, Guerrero is a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee and is the Pac-12 Athletic Director’s Liaison to the Men’s Basketball Coaches. He also is a member of the BCS Athletic Directors Administrative Group and an NCAA search committee member for NCAA’s vice president of men’s basketball championships.

In 10 years as Athletic Director, Guerrero has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the nation for NCAA team championships won (108), a number that continues growing under his direction. In that 10-year period, UCLA has won 22 NCAA team titles (the highest total in the nation in that span) in 12 different sports, finished second 19 times and have had an additional 41 Top Five finishes (79 total). In all, 191 teams (of 229 possible) have qualified for NCAA postseason competition, and the football team has appeared in eight bowl games.

The program has also won 51 conference championships in 15 different sports, produced over 515 All-Americans and featured four Honda Award winners, including the 2003-04 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

Furthermore, during the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, 34 Bruins participated as athletes or coaches, and 12 came away as medal-winners, including six gold medal athletes and two gold medalwinning coaches. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, 39 Bruins participated, representing the United States and nine other nations, and secured 15 medals, including four gold.

Over the past decade, Guerreor has earned numerous honors. In May 2010, he ws honored by the Black Coaches and Administrators organization as the Dr. Myles Brand BCA Administrator of the Year. In April 2010, he was honored by CORO Southern California, a non-profit organization that trains civic and government leaders.

In June 2010, Guerrero completed a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

As the Chair in 2009-10, he served on the NCAA Advisory Committee that resulted in the $10.8 million, 14-year NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament television package with CBS and Turner Sports, as well as the decision to create the “First Four” and the expansion of the Tournament to 68 teams.

Under Guerrero’s leadership, UCLA continues to remain one of the premier broad-based intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. In the last 10 years, UCLA has finished second three times (2007-08, 2006-07 and 2005-06), third three times (2011-12, 2004-05 and 2003-04), fourth (2009-10), sixth (2002-03), 11th (2010-11) and 16th (2008-09) in the race for the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.

MORRISON FACULTY ATHLETICS REP. M.I.T. ’61 Donald G. Morrison is currently in his 19th year as UCLA’s Faculty Athletic Representative.

In 2011-12, he served as President of the Pac-12 Conference. He previously served as President of the Pac-10 in 2008-09 and 1997-98.

Morrison, a specialist in management science and marketing, is the William E. Leonhard Professor in the Anderson Graduate School of Management.

A 1961 graduate of M.I.T. with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, Morrison earned a Ph.D. in operations research at Stanford University in 1965. He joined the Columbia Business School faculty the following year as assistant professor, served as associate professor from 1968 and was named professor of business in 1973. He has also served as visiting professor at Stanford and at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1987.

Over the past 40 years, Morrison has supervised the doctoral dissertations of a number of students who are now faculty members of other leading institutions.

Many are now on key editorial boards and eight have endowed chairs. Morrison was the founding editor of the professional journal, Marketing Science and was editor-in-chief of Management Science for eight years. He has served as departmental editor or editorial board member of several other professional journals. In 2002, Morrison was awarded the highest honor in the American Marketing Association, when he was named the McGraw-Hill/ Irwin Distinguished Educator of the Year.

He is the author or co-author of over 90 articles, with a special emphasis on marketing research and applied statistics. He has been an expert witness as a statistician in a number of legal cases and a consultant to industrial firms and government agencies.

Morrison, who will be 73 next February 26, served as captain of the M.I.T. track team. In 1961, he was the Eastern Conference long jump champion and placed third in the long jump at the New England Championships.

Morrison’s wife Sherie is a professor in UCLA’s Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics department. Their daughters, Heather Felix and Michelle Oliva, earned their MBA degrees from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. The Morrisons also have three grandsons, Parker Graham Felix, Spencer Andrew Felix and Jake Carmine Oliva.

Sherie and Don have endowed several athletic scholarships and provided funds for academic/ athletic awards during the last decade.
