A Message from the Dean

INSPIRATION INTO ACTION

Each year in June, our TEDxUCLA event assembles an impressive lineup of speakers from diverse disciplines who approach a “big idea” from thoughtprovoking and often unexpected perspectives. The theme was “Certainty” (See TEDx UCLA) and I find that conversation leads us to reflect on these ideas as we start the Fall Quarter.

While you may have a direct purpose in mind that has brought you to UCLA Extension, you likely have doubts as you prepare to enroll. Will the courses you choose help you reach your goals? Will you have enough time to study? Will you be able to develop professional networks that support your long-term career ambitions? These questions are common and represent valid concerns shared by many students as they manage personal, professional, and social obligations.

UCLA Extension is designed to address the unique needs of adult learners–whether first-time or continuing students, conference attendees, or alumni–and to offer a measure of certainty as a place for learning, sharing knowledge, fostering creativity, and building professional networks.

As you engage in courses and other learning activities this fall, I encourage you to explore your big ideas from a variety of angles. Share your thoughts and experiences with instructors and fellow students. Ask questions, offer solutions, and challenge yourself.

Life is complex and unpredictable. Yet, as we continue our education, we gain knowledge that equips us to contend with unforeseen challenges. We can reduce the uncertainties we have by furthering our expertise and pursuing new areas of interest. Each year I see students who grapple with similar doubts, then persevere and succeed. (See Certificate Graduation 2022 Celebration.)

Whatever your goals may be, I am certain that you will have a rewarding UCLA Extension experience that will enrich your life.

Sincerely,

Eric A. Bullard, PhD Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA Extension
