Woody Woodhall, CAS

Instructor, Entertainment A principal at Allied Post Audio in Santa Monica, CA, Mr. Woodhall is an award-winning supervising sound editor, sound designer, and rerecording mixer. He has sound supervised and mixed feature films and documentaries. For television, he has recorded, edited, and mixed hundreds of episodes of programming airing on Netflix, Amazon Studios, YouTube Red, MTV, the CW, Comedy Central, Food Network, Nat Geo, History, USA Network, Vice, and more. His recent projects include the first season of Wasteland, a series on Paramount+; a feature documentary, Moby Doc, about the electronic musician Moby; and The Greatest Inheritance, a feature film starring Mena Suvari.

Master of Interior Architecture

Have you dreamed of becoming an interior designer or do you want to take your design career to the next level? Design your career at UCLA Extension. Created for the working professional, the online Master of Interior Architecture Program can be pursued on a part-time basis and incorporates the highest standards of practice, empowering students to build a firstrate professional portfolio of large-scale projects to demonstrate superior design and technical ability.

New Class

Post-Production Sound for Film and Television

FILM TV X 478.013 This course provides practical insights into the role of the sound supervisor and other sound professionals in film and TV. Through lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and field trips, students understand for an effective sound throughout the movie or TV series. Students learn and utilize Pro Tools. Topics cover dialog cleanup and editing, recording ADR (automated dialogue replacement), foley (hard effects and use of background sounds from libraries), and practices of music editing, including temp scores and mix. Field trips take place at an ADR session studio, a Foley studio, and a dubbing stage. Students must have their own computers (Mac recommended) with an active subscription to the Pro Tools software. Post-Production Certificate

This certificate provides a practical education and professional development for people who want to transition into a career as a film, TV, documentary, and/ or new media editor. Students work on industry standard software and develop editing skills in sound and image. Students also are introduced to color correction and visual effects. Upon completion, graduates will be prepared to work as assistant editors, editors, and assistants in postproduction facilities.

Directing Certificate

With a focus on independent filmmaking, students learn the art and craft of directing. Our instructors mentor students in the role of story, directing actors, and the aesthetics of filmmaking, as well as the practical responsibilities of the director. Using their own equipment, students work hands-on in directing workshops. Beginning with simple exercises, students progress to directing their original short film and can enter the UCLAxFilmFest competition and network with peers and industry professionals. Courses are offered both in person and remote.

Music Business Certificate

This certificate serves both aspiring and established music industry executives, artists, producers, managers, songwriters, and publishers. Learn the principles of the music industry in the areas of A&R, touring, marketing, legal issues, publishing, and artist management, and how to navigate this dynamic, ever-changing industry.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE & HORTICULTURE Landscape Architecture Certificate

Interested in becoming a landscape architect? Our program has a 40+ year history of preparing students for a career in landscape architecture. State approved to provide the educational requirements to sit for the license exam in California, our new low-residency program provides working professionals the education necessary to transition into a new career in landscape architecture and/or landscape design. Program starts in September, 2022.

VISUAL ARTS Special Topics: Design Entrepreneurship

Learn the business side of design and how to position yourself. The course invites industry professionals to share where the demand is for talent. Guest speakers have come from companies such as LinkedIn, Penguin/Random House, Thrillist, and 344 Design.

WRITERS’ PROGRAM Written Communication Courses

Enhance Your Writing Skills for Work and Everyday Life The Writers’ Program is thrilled to present its new program in Written Communication. These courses focus on practical applications of writing in daily life: clear expression of ideas, writing persuasively, editing communication for clarity and brevity, and using writing in careers. Our summer offerings include WRITCOM 702.1E Résumé Writing Basics, taught by Scott Eagan; WRITCOM X 401 Clear and Descriptive Writing, taught by Jessica Barksdale Inclán; WRITCOM X 402 Persuasive Writing, taught by Carlos Allende Gonzalez; and WRITCOM X 404 Editing, Proofreading, and Reviewing taught by Scott Eagan. 2022–2023 Master Classes in Creative Writing

Our Master Classes are designed for writers serious about revising their completed book-length drafts into polished works for publication. These 30-week courses allow for individual instruction, peer critiques from like-minded talented writers, ongoing mentoring, and focus on process and results. Limited to eight writers, these advanced Master Class workshops require the submission of a book-length project. The deadline to apply is at 9am PT, on September 6.

The 2023 Writers Studio

Push aside the demands and deadlines of your daily life and dive into your writing at the Writers Studio. During four intensive days, you learn and write in a workshop equivalent to a regular 10-week Writers’ Program course. Select one workshop from a choice of 10, each taught by a Writers’ Program instructor who is also an accomplished screenwriter, novelist, short fiction writer, editor, or creative nonfiction writer. The conference features a welcome reception, complimentary coffee and snacks daily, a book sale, and daily guest speakers. Visit uclaextension.edu/writers-studio.

The Write Process

The Write Process podcast is back for Season 5, inviting writers to tell us the good, the bad, and the ugly about writing their completed projects. This season features Tembi Locke, Iris Yamashita, María Amparo Escandón, Lou Mathews, Grace Perry, and more. Instructor Spotlight

Visual Arts Pash is a design strategist, author, and educator with 30 years of experience in the field of design. He has designed the official logo for Miles Davis, brand extensions for Playboy, products for John Varvatos, retail product strategy for Motown Records, and advertising for Perrier. For the last 10 years he has focused on the entertainment industry. Pash’s work has appeared in hundreds of magazines, journals, and books and has sat on shelves on six continents, resides in the Smithsonian Institution, and hangs on a wall in Oprah’s office. Pash teaches Design IV: Capstone and Special Topics: Entrepreneurship.
