LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends of UCI MIND, We are pleased to bring you this end of year report. As you know, the mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge research to discover solutions for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. We also devote considerable effort toward community education and training the next generation of researchers to continue ground breaking studies and clinicians to care for people with these diseases. As you will see in this report, 2023 was an exciting and active year for UCI MIND. 2023 was an unprecedented year in Alzheimer’s research. Two new drugs were approved by the FDA to treat Alzheimer’s and we expect a third early in 2024. These approvals break a 20-year drought and signal the beginning of a new phase of progress and advances. UCI

MIND investigators made key discoveries over the last two decades that were essential to this progress, and we are poised to push further and faster forward in the coming years. Our work toward these goals was made possible by the outstanding investigators in UCI MIND and by you, our community of supporters. UCI MIND faculty have been awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Alzheimer’s Association, and other agencies. But gifts from local philanthropists are often pivotal in making these grant applications successful. We have numerous examples—including the induced pluripotent stem cell core in our ADRC, our MODEL-AD program, and our C2C Registry—where local gifts, often on the order of thousands of dollars, were used by our investigators to collect preliminary data that helped them secure millions and even tens of millions of dollars in NIH support.

STATE OF THE FIELD 2023 has been a monumental year in Alzheimer’s disease research and care. Scientists, advocates, and study participants have worked tirelessly for decades to get to this point, but our collective goal is still in front of us which is to eradicate the disease permanently.

PROGRESS MADE Lecanemab was granted full FDA approval in July, the first such approval in 20 years; it is also the only treatment shown to slow disease. Brexpiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic, received FDA approval to treat agitation in Alzheimer’s disease.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will cover FDA approved treatments for Alzheimer’s disease
CMS will cover biomarker testing to determine treatment eligibility.
Dementia Care Coordination programs will also be covered by CMS to help families navigate the Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias journey.

STATE OF THE INSTITUTE The Mission of UCI MIND is to advance treatment, prevention, diagnosis, and care for Alzheimer’s through collaborative research and education. This year has shown us we are progressing toward that mission, but substantial more work remains needed.

BEALL SCHOLAR PROGRAM With support from Joan and Don Beall, UCI MIND launched in 2021 the Beall Scholar Program to engage students from local high schools in research and education on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias to inspire future academic and career choices in geriatric healthcare and research. This 1-week summer training and mentorship program matches students from underrepresented groups with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from REMIND to help guide them in making important steps towards attending college and pursuing STEM careers.

RESEARCH AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAM (RAMP) The Research and Mentorship Program (RAMP), a training initiative made possible by support from philanthropist Dr. Lorna Carlin and the nonprofit HFC led by Lauren Miller Rogen and Seth Rogen, pairs 2nd year medical students with UCI MIND faculty mentors to inspire scientific ideas and future careers in dementia research and care. As the field presently grapples with a serious shortage of geriatric healthcare professionals, RAMP aims to create a pipeline of enthusiastic trainees who, motivated by their experiences and mentorship, choose medical careers to advance knowledge and care for older adults.
Finally, after decades of hard work and countless failures, we are at a precipice with Alzheimer’s disease research and treatment. In the last two years, for the first time, we have disease modifying treatments that are FDA approved. Now, more than ever, we need to train the next generation of physician scientists to be prepared to take this fight to the next level by generating important research that will ultimately support development of more efficacious treatments. The RAMP program is central to achieving that goal.

Maxwell Lee How will RAMP enhance your career goals? RAMP was a great opportunity for me to learn about the process of doing research; Dr. Kawas and her colleagues were great mentors that taught me about how to design a study, critically analyze previous literature in the field, and interpret the results.
Why did you get involved in RAMP? I got involved in RAMP because it was a chance to build on previous Alzheimer’s Disease research while also developing my skills as a researcher more broadly.
How will RAMP improve research and health care in ADRD? RAMP helps to train future researchers and clinicians by giving them a background understanding of ADRD and cultivating strong foundational research practices. Both will be helpful in both performing and understanding future developments in the field, which ultimately will lead to better care and outcomes for patients.
Casey Vanderlip RAMP is a great example of how we can get medical students involved in research. I’ve learned that research is a huge component of the healthcare system. And I think just doing this has motivated me personally to want to do more and more research in the future.
Joey Wong The incidences of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia will continue to increase with our aging population. So having the support of RAMP and people that are dedicated to trying to address some of the clinical challenges that we see in the clinic, will be enormous help, but also will help fuel the research that is going to inform how we are going to treat and diagnose patients more efficiently and provide them with better care.

DR. CHRASTIL’S WAM PROJECT Dr. Liz Chrastil is an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior in the School of Biological Sciences who studies spatial neuroscience. She was awarded a WAM grant in 2020 to study how menopause impacts navigation abilities and test those relationships with changes in brain structure and function in midlife.
