THE UC IRVINE PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT TEAM PRESENTS

ANTEATER FAMILY WEEKEND NOV. 7-8, 2025

Welcome to Anteater Family Weekend! Dear Anteater families, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Anteater Family Weekend. As parents and family members, you have supported your student through countless moments, big and small. I hope you feel an immense sense of pride in all your student has accomplished to be part of the UC Irvine community. With its continued distinction as a top 10 public university and its steadfast commitment to first-generation and underrepresented students, UC Irvine remains a place where every Anteater can truly thrive. This weekend is all about celebrating the vital role you play in your student’s journey. We’ve curated a dynamic lineup of experiences designed to help you connect more deeply with UC Irvine – from Zot Quest, our interactive campus adventure, to immersive showcases that highlight the university’s academic excellence and spirit of innovation. You’ll also have the chance to engage directly with staff, faculty and university leaders and gain a firsthand look at the many ways UC Irvine empowers students to thrive. Beyond this weekend, I’m proud to share how families continue to make a lasting impact through their active involvement and philanthropy. Our Parent Executive Board (PEB), established in 2017, began with a vision of engaging parents philanthropically to support student success through the Anteater Grant Initiative (AGI). Over time, that vision has evolved into both engagement and impact, connecting our entire parent community directly to the heart of UC Irvine’s mission. Today, our Parent Executive Board is composed of 12 families representing students from nine schools across campus including the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the School of Humanities, the Samueli School of Engineering, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Social Ecology and the School of Social Sciences. Through campus partnerships and philanthropic leadership, these families help elevate programs that advance student success, research and innovation. A signature highlight of their work is the AGI Showcase, introduced in 2023, which celebrates the voices of past awardees and concludes with the much-anticipated announcement of new grant recipients. The Anteater Grant Initiative has become a cornerstone of our parent philanthropy efforts, empowering students and enriching the Anteater experience. Collectively, between commitments from our Parent Executive Board and annual gifts from the broader parent community, more than $350,000 has been distributed from the Anteater Grant Initiative to campus programs that enrich the student experience. As we continue to grow, our team remains dedicated to collaborating across campus, listening to feedback from families and refining our programs with the parent experience in mind. I also encourage you to explore our newly redesigned Parent & Family Engagement website, built to help families easily find what they need – from academic advising and financial aid to wellness and mentorship programs. Thank you for being part of our Anteater family and for the support, enthusiasm and joy you bring to this community. Together, we celebrate your student’s accomplishments and look forward to all that lies ahead. Zotfully yours, Marissa Norys Senior Director, Engagement Programs

BOB ERNST 67

MAKING THE MASCOT Bob Ernst’s storied career in rowing began at UC Irvine, where he was a member of the university’s first Varsity Crew and a player on the founding Water Polo Team. As a student-athlete, he also competed in swimming before beginning his coaching journey at UC Irvine, the place that sparked a lifetime dedicated to the sport and to mentoring student-athletes. His legacy as an Anteater was later honored with induction into the UC Irvine Athletic Hall of Fame. From those early days in Irvine, Ernst went on to become one of the most accomplished and longest-tenured coaches in University of Washington history. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he served as head coach of both the men’s (1987–2007) and women’s (1980–87, 2007–15) rowing teams, having first joined the program as the men’s freshman coach in 1974. Under his leadership, the Washington women’s team captured six national championships in seven years during the 1980s (1980–85, 1987), while his men’s teams earned IRA National Championship titles in 1997 and 2007. Ernst was named Pac-10 Women’s Coach of the Year in 1987, the first year the conference sponsored women’s sports, and Pac-10 Men’s Coach of the Year an impressive ten times. A visionary beyond collegiate athletics, Ernst was instrumental in the creation of the Windermere Cup and Opening Day Regatta, now one of the world’s best-attended rowing events. His influence extended to the international stage, serving as a U.S. Olympic coach in 1976, 1980, 1984, and 1988. Most notably, he led the U.S. women’s eight to gold at the 1984 Olympic Games, earning the first women’s rowing medal in U.S. history, and went on to coach dozens of Olympians throughout his career. Ernst’s exceptional contributions have earned him induction into the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Hall of Fame and the National Rowing Foundation Hall of Fame (1994). In 1982, he was also named the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sports Star of the Year.
