Dear Student, Welcome to this special edition of The Edge! We hope you are enjoying

the start of the new academic year and looking forward to getting involved at your school. Our team at UCI is excited to bring you this special third edition focused on helping you select a major. Like our previous special editions, this issue guides you as you face two big decisions: where you should go to college and what you should major in.

It may seem daunting to imagine what the classes will be like in college and what long-term opportunities and careers you want to prepare for. We know these choices can weigh heavily on your mind, and we are here to help! In this issue, we focus on career pathways within the Paul Merage School of Business, School of Social Ecology, and School of Biological Sciences. Whether you are familiar with these career fields or not, we are confident you will walk away with new ideas, questions, and possibilities for your future.

This edition provides guidance, questions to ask yourself, and information to demystify the college preparation process. We also break down the organization of majors and schools at UCI. Although this will vary at each institution, understanding how academic units and programs are structured will help you map your options at any university. In addition, we spotlight a few majors you may have yet to consider and hear directly from students on the other side of these choices to learn from them.

5 STEPS TO CHOOSING A MAJOR

To receive a degree or certificate from a college or university, a student must declare a major. A major is a specific area of study that a student chooses to focus their course of study. We recognize that selecting a major is not always a simple task.

So, whether you are 99% sure of your choice or have no idea where to start, we encourage you to use the following steps to select a major that is right for YOU!

Step 1: Assess Yourself The more you understand yourself, the easier it is to identify your goals and ways to achieve them. Assessments are a great tool to learn more about yourself and your core values. Consider taking any of these assessments to help you get started: Myers-Briggs & 16 Personalities, Value Sort, or CliftonStrengths. The results you get are personal to you and can help you uncover majors that align with your strengths and values. After completing an assessment, we encourage you to connect with a trusted adult, teacher, or counselor to reflect on your results and understand their meaning.

Step 3: Evaluate and

Make Your Major Decision Put together all the information you gather from Steps 1 & 2 and create a list of two or three potential majors.

We then encourage you to meet with an academic counselor who can help you evaluate the information you have gathered and offer suggestions on the next steps you can take.

Step 4: Take Action

Choosing a major requires you to be proactive! Select student activities, internships, volunteer work, and/or part-time employment that can help you further develop skills in the areas that interest you. This is a great way to find out first-hand whether or not you can see yourself doing this in the future.

Talk to people who work in the career

fields you are considering and see if there are any opportunities they would recommend that you get involved with throughout the school year or during the summer.

Step 5: Apply for Your Major

You will be prompted to select a major on your college application(s). Keep in mind that many students change their major while in college. If you are unsure about your major, selecting “undeclared” or “undecided” on your college application and declaring your major later on, is okay. This gives you a chance to take some time and explore.

Once you declare your major, you are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor from the college or school at least twice a year to remain on track to complete your degree.

Step 2: Gather Information and Explore Options Research majors at different universities and make a list of your interests. You may also work backwards! Explore job descriptions of careers that interest you and see what majors are most common within the field. We encourage you to discuss

UNIVERSITY, SCHOOLS, AND MAJORS, OH MY!

University of California, Irvine (UCI) offers many Major options. But, before you

choose a major, we wanted to provide insight into how universities are organized and structured.

Within every college or university, there are schools or academic units. An example is the School of Business, School of Education, or School of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). You will find colleges at California State University, Fullerton, like the College of Health and Human Development or College of Health Sciences.

Now, within each school, there are Majors you apply to, and this is where the specifics of choosing a Major come in; it is important that you know the difference! For example, when you apply to college, you might apply to UCI and choose to major in African-American Studies; this means you are applying to the University of California, Irvine, School of Humanities, with a major in AfricanAmerican Studies.

It might sound confusing now, but don't worry; it will make more sense when you arrive. In the meantime, this magazine intends to help you understand the basics.

With that said, here is a snapshot of all the schools at UCI, and in each edition, you will learn more about the majors offered within each of these schools:

As you read through the magazine and learn about UCI's academic units and major options, here are some key terms and definitions that will help you better understand the available opportunities for students at UCI. Undergraduate: A student at a college or university who has not yet earned a bachelor's or equivalent degree.

Bachelor’s Degree: An undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to six years (depending on institution and academic discipline). The two most common bachelor's degrees are the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS or BSc).

Major: A specific area of study that a student chooses to focus their course of study during their undergraduate career.

Minor: Students can explore a smaller area of study alongside their major, which may or may not be related to the major.

Double Major: When a student fulfills the degree requirements for two areas of study.

Selective Major: Refers to a campus receiving more applications for admission than the campus can accommodate.

Graduate Degree: An advanced academic degree in a specialized field of study, pursued after one has already obtained a bachelor's degree.

Masters Degree: A postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities or colleges upon completion of a course of study demonstrating mastery or a high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice.

Doctorate: A high-level degree earned after a period of three or more years of graduate-level study, culminating in the creation, submission, presentation, and defense of a research dissertation.

Work -Based: Development and assessment of skills within and directly related to the workplace.

Apprenticeship: A system for training a new generation of practitioners of

a trade or profession with on-the-job training and often some accompanying study. Apprenticeships can also enable practitioners to gain a license to practice in a regulated occupation.

Fellowships: Short-term, paid, opportunities that are sponsored by a specific organization and obtained through a competitive application process. Organizations sponsor Fellowships for multiple reasons. A fellowship is a training program in which individuals perform research and develop skills to apply in a professional environment.

Internship: Allows students to experience work cultures and environments before beginning their careers. They can also gain entry-level exposure in a particular industry or field. Internships focus on participating in work environments to fulfill a degree or training program requirement.

Mentorship: Guidance provided by a mentor, especially an experienced person in a company or educational institution.

Job Shadowing: A type of on-thejob training that allows an interested employee to follow and closely observe another employee performing the role.

Job Placement: A service offered to help individuals secure employment post completion of work-based experience and an educational degree.

MAJORS WITHIN THE PAUL MERAGE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Incoming first-year and transfer students who are driven, analytic, and innovative are encouraged to pursue UCI's Undergraduate Business Program degree.

In 2022, UCI's Undergraduate Business Program was ranked #30 in the U.S. News & World Report because students who enter UCI's Undergraduate Business Program transition into the workforce as the next top business leaders. Through the mission of the Merage School, students offer the opportunity to explore and apply theories within business management while learning and developing leadership skills in a global context. Students within the Undergraduate Business Program can pursue either a B.A. in Business Administration or a B.S. in Business Information Management.

Business Administration (B.A.) Students pursuing a B.A. in Business Administration may select at least one of six emphases: Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Operations and Decision Technologies, and Organization and Management. As a requirement for this degree and to support the development of the student's exposure to the global context, students are expected to fulfill an international business requirement through participation in the University's Education Abroad Program or by enrolling and passing a course that provides exposure to the business sector in a global context.

Business Information Management (B.S.) Students pursuing a B.S. in Business Information Management can specialize in diverse global strategy, branding and design, social and organizational aspects of

computing, project management, and much more. This degree cultivates adaptable business leaders by allowing students to gain relevant hands-on experience for their future careers. Incoming students highly desire UCI's B.S. in Business Information Management because of its location, connections, depth of knowledge, and overall excellence.

Students not majoring within the two business majors in the Undergraduate Business Program are encouraged to explore the minors to gain experience in a business discipline.

Accounting Students preparing for a graduate degree in accounting or a career in accounting or a similar field are encouraged to pursue this minor.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Students preparing for a career in entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship are encouraged to pursue this minor to gain academic and practical training.

Management Students interested in a graduate degree in management, a career in business, or a related field that requires management knowledge are encouraged to pursue this minor.

Name: Ingrid Romero Pronouns: she/her Major(s): Business Administration Class of: 2024

As a first-generation college student, I remember the stress and nervousness that came with the college application process. Everyone around me wanted to major in STEM, and I often felt lost and confused as I questioned whether I was making the right decision. To be completely honest, I chose Business Administration as my major because I knew I wouldn’t like the STEM classes. Looking back as I enter my senior year at UCI, I can confidently say that it was the best decision I have ever made, and I have never once regretted it.

Firstly, my reason for choosing the University of California, Irvine originates from its alignment with my principles and ethics. This university has a reputation that has maintained itself intact even now that I am enrolled as a student. I had always heard that UCI was a place where students are encouraged to not only figure out and implement their career goals but also discover who they are as individuals. With this in mind, I took it upon myself to research the business program as this profession had been an interest of mine since high school. After talking to experts, I realized Business Administration would be my ideal field.

Throughout my first few quarters at UCI, imposter syndrome often crept in as I questioned whether I was smart or good enough to be at such an amazing school. I watched so many Business Administration students land such cool internships, and it left me feeling like I was alone in a space where everyone seemed to know just exactly what their dream career was. However, the Paul Merage School of Business made me understand that, in reality, I was not alone.

There were so many other first-generation students who I now look up to as mentors and role models, and they helped me feel like I belonged at UCI.

Once I established that business would be my focus, I had to decide on an emphasis. This was the most challenging part as a transfer student. My professors at community college encouraged me to delve into accounting or finance since it is a rewarding field.

However, I felt disconnected from it and knew I would not be fulfilled. After meetings with my mentor, I decided that Human Resources and Marketing were best suited for me. As a natural problem solver and creative thinker, I was automatically drawn to and became infatuated with these topics when they were discussed in my college courses.

As a commuter student, I was afraid of not being able to make friends, but Merage offers so many opportunities to get involved. Coming in, I knew virtually nothing about the business world, but I can safely say that I’ve learned so many professional skills and lessons that motivated me to become like the students I once envied. With the help of the academic advisors, student organizations, and business professors, I was able to obtain different internships and learn what I want to pursue post-grad. I am endlessly grateful for the lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories I formed at UCI, and I really could not imagine myself anywhere else. Zot zot zot!

After being at UCI for a year now, I can testify that it has lived up to my expectations and even exceeded them. I have gained valuable information about my career both inside and outside the classroom.

Picking Paul Merage was a pivotal decision, and I am incredibly grateful I have the opportunity to attend this institution. I have and will continue to encourage people to apply to UCI because every effort and sacrifice I have made has been worth it.

School of Social Ecology

The School of Social Ecology conducts world-class research that supports an integrative approach to solving social and environmental problems. We provide inclusive

educational programs that connect students — most of whom are first-generation, transfer, and historically disadvantaged — to the American dream.

Finding Answers Our research and innovative programs address criminal justice, mental health, climate and environmental challenges, and urban development issues.

Sustainable Solutions Criminal Justice — Our researchers are studying the causes and consequences of criminal behavior and looking at ways to reduce recidivism and improve the criminal jus-tice system. Young Adult Court, for example, helps first-time felony offenders become productive members of society.

PrisonPandemic, an online archive, amplifies often silenced voices of incarcerated people and creates a resource where students, community members, and researchers can explore and analyze their experiences.

Mental Health — Topics being researched by students and professors include child development in the digital age, healthy aging, coping with traumatic events, dealing with parenting stress, finding happiness, regulating depression and anxiety, and bringing people together to tackle complex problems. For example, our Ph.D. program in clinical psychology trains students to lead the search for new knowledge in assessing, understanding, preventing, and treating psychological disorders and mental health concerns from an inclusive perspective that is psychologically, ecologically, socially, and biologically informed.

Environment — Maintaining coastal health, reducing flood risk, providing access to clean water, and creating and maintaining safe communities and dignified housing are a few of the concerns we study to address the ongoing challenges of climate and social justice. For example, the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation works to mitigate flood risk and the impacts of human trafficking and modern slavery through research and initiatives that promote change.

MAJORS WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL ECOLOGY

The School of Social Ecology is home to four undergraduate departments:

Criminology, Law & Society Criminology, Law & Society focuses on the problems of crime and grasping the ideas on the social, cultural, political, and economic forces that work alongside the law. Graduates from this department can enter various career fields in criminal justice and regulatory agencies, public policy organizations, social service organizations, law and legal services, and more. f Major: Criminology, Law & Society (B.A) f Minor: Criminology, Law & Society

Urban Planning & Public Policy Urban Planning & Public Policy is home to two majors, Urban Studies and Environmental Science & Policy.

Urban Studies students learn to foster more equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and livable cities. Careers to consider with Urban Studies include community development, city planning, law enforcement, political campaigns, public administration, policy analysis,

city and town management, and more. Environmental Science & Policy prepares students for environmental problem-solving by recognizing the impacts of human activities on the environment as well as ecological changes to society. Potential careers in Environmental Science and Policy include environmental policy, resource management, education, environmental law, urban and ecological design, etc. f Majors: Urban Studies (B.A) and Environmental Science & Policy (B.A) f Minors: Urban Studies and Urban & Regional Planning

Social Ecology Though Social Ecology is the school's name, there is also a Social Ecology major. Students in the Social Ecology major take courses from the other three departments, Criminology, Law and Society, Urban Planning and Public Policy, and Psychological Science, to get a better understanding of how all three departments intersect in terms of social, psychological, environmental, and legal problems, to be able to obtain a career in any of these fields. f Major: Social Ecology (B.A) f Minor: Social Ecology

Psychological Science Some may confuse Psychological Science from the School of Social Ecology with Psychology from the School of Social Sciences. Hence, knowing the difference between the two departments and majors is essential. Psychological Science, in particular, studies psychology's developmental, social, health, and abnormal aspects. Some career fields that graduates from this department tend to go into are education, human development, public health, social work, counseling, law, business, and more.

Students in the School of Social Ecology complete at least 80 hours (4 units) of fieldwork to fulfill their graduation requirements. Fieldwork experience allows students to step into a career field of their choice from acquainted sites to gain experience and opportunities to network with others in their area of interest.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS: SCHOOL OF SOCIAL ECOLOGY Name: Ashley Garcia Pronouns: she/her Major(s): Psychological Science Class of: 2025 I selected the major Psychological Science because I was motivated by the events around me and the thought that I could make a change. I am a firstgeneration college student from an underrepresented community. I noticed there wasn't awareness or support for mental health or access to resources such as a stable internet connection.

I started to wonder if other students were experiencing the same thing.

Name: Aubriana Lopez Pronouns: she/her/hers Major(s): Psychological Sciences and Educational Sciences Class of: 2024 Upon entering college, I needed more clear direction for selecting a major, aside from my passion for history, which led me to enroll as a history major. My passion for history came from my fascination with learning about my family's ancestral background. After researching my family tree, one common thread that wove us together was our absence of higher education achievements. Some

This curiosity led me to attend a youth conference where I was surprised to find other students voicing their concerns about mental health and feeling misunderstood on their campus. It bothered me that there wasn't an understanding that these issues are real and affect us all. As I became more aware of these issues, I became more involved, providing more resources to my community through a leadership position on campus. In time, I realized that I would love to pursue my interest in mental health through a psychology major.

However, other experiences motivated my selection of major.

Through my AP Psychology class, I expanded my understanding of psychology. I was fascinated by how individuals' perspectives influence their actions and behaviors. MAJORS WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

The School of Biological Sciences has existed since UCI's opening in 1965 and has since progressed, creating solutions for our health, society, and environment, deemed impossible and unimaginable years ago.

Placing in the top 20 percent of national institutions, UCI's School of Biological Sciences consists of four exceptional departments, each housing a multitude of majors that highlight concepts of the Mind, Body, and World within the Biological Sciences. Students undergo an extraordinary experience through intentional classes, laboratory courses, and research experience, which heighten understanding and foster problem-solving, discoveries, and revelations within Biology. The departments and majors within UCI's School of Biological Sciences are as follows: The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior f Neurobiology, B.S. (Bachelor of Science) f Human Biology, B.S. The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was the first of its kind, established in 1964, becoming the first neuroscience department in the world! Majors within this department reflect numerous concepts of the Mind within Biological Sciences. Students can expect to study and explore the computational brain, which covers concepts of "learning and memory," the social or artistic brain, which involves advanced imaging techniques to examine the mind's intricacies, as well as delve into research involving brain health, addiction, and Alzheimer's disease. The Neurobiology B.S. major can lead to a position in the

pharmaceutical industry, the healthcare delivery industry, or medically or biologically related technologies.

Nonetheless, continuing one's education after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Neurology can prepare one for careers in biological research, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, nursing, and other related fields. The Human Biology B.S. major can lead to health science professions.

The Department of Developmental and Cell Biology f Developmental and Cell Biology, B.S. f Genetics, B.S. Majors in this department work closely with concepts of the Body within Biological Sciences. Students within these majors work to establish understanding and unravel solutions to pressing biological questions like developmental disorders, origins of cancer development, and cell repair and growth. Thus, via an interactive approach, students are exposed to an array of knowledge in topics such as the basic biology of stem cells, central nervous systems injury and stroke, diabetes, and stem cell-based screens. Completing these majors assists students in pursuing graduate programs such as biomedical sciences and research. The Genetics B.S. major prepares students for graduate degrees and programs in teacher training, medical, and veterinary school.

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry f Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, B.S. f Microbiology and Immunology, B.S. The scope from which majors in this department study the body is at the

molecular level. Students can expect to delve into mechanisms that underlie all fundamental biological processes.

Within these majors' students will be able to conduct an in-depth study of the molecular basis of fields such as biochemistry, immunology, structural biology, and virology. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology B.S. major and a graduate degree can lead to careers in research, medicine, and the biotech industry. Regarding the Microbiology and Immunology Major, topics that are commonly explored are the biology of bacteria, viruses, and unicellular eukaryotes such as fungi and protozoa, all of which can cause disease, which is a strong focus of careers such as medicine and public health.

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology f Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, B.S. The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major contains studies and concepts of Biological Studies that transcend multiple levels of organization, ultimately addressing the world itself!

Students in this department and major can expect to tackle biological questions ranging from molecular aspects of evolution to organismal structure and performance to the ecology of ecosystems and the globe.

Amongst some concepts that can be explored within this major are population genetics, the evolution of aging, plant and animal population and community ecology, behavioral ecology, the evolution of infectious disease, evolutionary ecology, and global change, to name a few. These ecological and evolutionary ideas are often incorporated in the work of biologists in fields ranging from medicine to global change biology.

More Majors within the School of Biological Sciences f Biological Sciences, B.S. Explores concepts ranging from ecology and evolutionary biology to genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

Exposure to essential laboratory techniques and methodology.

Potential careers in biological topics include pharmaceuticals, science journalism, medical research, biological supply industries, etc.

A Minor degree in Biological Sciences is available. f Biology/Education, B.S. Earning a degree in this field allows you to teach biology and general science in a middle or high school setting.

Students majoring in Biology/ Education earn their bachelor's degree and California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential. f Exercise Sciences, B.S. Explores physical activities' role in shaping fundamental biological processes necessary for maintaining health and preventing diseases via the study of cell types, tissue, and organ systems.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS: SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Name: Ashley Lissette Melgar Pronouns: she/her/hers Major(s): Microbiology and Immunology Class of: 2025 I got into the study of Microbiology because of the recent pandemic that struck in my developing years of high school, the SARS-COVID 19. As the virus and its lingering effects personally impacted me, I grew more inclined to learn more about this virus and the diverse amount of disciplines in this area of the Biological Sciences community. In particular, the major I chose mirroring this sentiment was Microbiology and Immunology B.S. I am a person who likes to reflect on the more minor details, which is what microbiology wants to reflect on as well. Much of the learning surrounding my major builds on the study of microorganisms and evolves this focus into various processes that streamline the basic requirements for life. It starts small and encompasses a bigger picture.

Just as organisms live in part of their community, I found my very own here at UCI within the EASE program. The program is designed to create a supportive environment for first-year students in their social and academic endeavors in the School of Biological Sciences.

The program encouraged me to ask the questions necessary when navigating the different majors offered. It helped immensely to have mentors aiding me in providing the tools needed to follow our curiosities. This helped me narrow my focus to the microbiology and immunology major. When reflecting upon all of this, I not only solidified my decision but grew confidence within myself in acknowledging that I could also contribute to the larger than myself, the Biological Science community around me.

Being a first-generation student, I was unaware of research and extracurriculars that could also grow my academic endeavors, but the EASE program helped develop myself and these curiosities. Now I am a part of the Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program, a Peer Academic Advisor for the School of Biological Sciences, and a board member of Flying Samaritans, a non-profit clinic that assists in providing healthcare to patients internationally.

Name: Lizbeth Hernandez Pronouns: she/her/hers Major(s): Biological Sciences Class of: 2025 Initially, only great and amazing things were expected of me as the first-born daughter of immigrant parents, and what better way to meet their expectations for success and the American dream than to become a doctor? With this expectation in mind, I have always prepared myself for a long and arduous journey; however, when I was 12 years old, I truly realized I wanted to become a doctor and not necessarily complete this goal for my parents.

Growing up, I always put others before myself and was helpful in school to teachers and students. These characteristics about myself would soon prove to be one of the most significant reasons I chose to pursue medicine. In 2016, one of my family members was diagnosed with leukemia, and since then, I grew up with constant visits to the hospital. Along the way, I began to appreciate and respect doctors profoundly, which inspired my passion for medicine.

I also chose to pursue biological sciences as a major because I vastly enjoyed my STEM-related courses throughout middle and high school. Throughout my K-12 years, I always performed best in STEM-related studies, so I exposed myself to higher-level division courses at the university.

My experience has been challenging at times, which has set my decision in stone. I always knew I wanted to help others, and I'm glad I am fortunate enough to have genuinely found a profound interest and passion in biology.
