Greetings from Chancellor & Dean David L. Faigman Congratulations! It is with great pleasure and a true honor to welcome you to the 140th commencement exercises of the University of California Hastings College of the Law. When people achieve milestones in life as momentous as graduating law school, it is a commonplace truism that they did not get there on their own. It takes a community. In fact, it takes many communities. We come together today to celebrate all of these communities, and particularly so this year. The Class of 2021 confronted, and surmounted, so much this past year, including a pandemic that turned their lives and the lives of their families and friends upside down. And the challenges of illness were compounded by threats to the very fabric of civil society and our constitutional democracy. The members of our greater community have been there for one another, and it is on days like this one that we celebrate them as well.

Foremost, today is a day to celebrate the graduates. Before ever entering the halls of UC Hastings, our graduates traveled multiple and diverse paths. These paths varied considerably, from working odd jobs in high school and college to support their education (and, sometimes, their families), to public service such as the Peace Corps or Teach for America. Together with their shared academic excellence, these rich experiences prepared our graduates well for the challenges and opportunities of law school.

We also celebrate the communities of families that supported today’s graduates along the way, from their earliest formative years through the excitement and, occasionally, the angst, of the law school classroom. These families are as diverse as the individuals that they supported, and include various combinations of parents, spouses, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and often just those who came together in friendship and love. Whatever the diversity of their constitutions, they all shared the commitment of support to our graduates.

UC Hastings is composed of many layers, all of which also support our mission as a law school. UC Hastings is our current students, a multitalented and extraordinary group of young people who have the potential to change the world.

UC Hastings is the more than 20,000 living alumni in California and across the nation who are already changing the world. UC Hastings is our staff, whose commitment to excellence ensures the smooth operations of the school day in and day out. And UC Hastings is our faculty, whose teaching prepares the next generation of lawyers and whose scholarship brings the UC Hastings name to

lawyers, judges, policy makers, and academics, both nationally and internationally.

We celebrate all of those who contributed to this momentous day, for the road of life is never traveled successfully alone, and however busy we get and however much we keep our heads down to attend to life’s details, we should never forget to look up and thank those around us who have made the road so fulfilling to walk.

Hastings College of the Law Alumni Association Board of Governors! Also, many thanks to your family and friends who supported you throughout law school and celebrate with this honor today (whether in person with you or via Zoom)! Today, you join a family of more than 20,000 alumni making their mark here in the San Francisco Bay Area, throughout California, in the highest levels of our state and federal governments, and around the globe who dedicate their legal careers to solving the most pressing challenges facing society and lifting up causes and diverse communities in the name of justice. Like you, many generations of U.C. Hastings alumni applied the skills and education received here to change California, the nation and the world. The fact that you will join our accomplished alumni in doing great things in just a few short months—after almost 1½ years of distance learning due to the COVID–19 pandemic—makes the commencement of your legal career at this unique time in history all the more special.

Hard work and dedication brought you to this point—the culmination of one journey, but the commencement of another. As you savor this accomplishment, I hope you appreciate that just as you relied on your professors, your classmates, your friends, and your family to help you through law school’s trials and tribulations, your new family of U.C. Hastings alumni will help you as you grow throughout your budding career. Even with the pandemic challenges you faced in your final semesters of law school and that continue to challenge our nation, you also join an alumni family which still takes time to honor the amazing leadership and accomplishments of outstanding alumni like Vice President Kamala Harris ’89.

In a profession often seen as adversarial, many attorneys become tempted to view every dispute and issue in terms of “us” and “them”. But that thinking likely won’t help you do justice—whether you choose a career path that takes you inside a courtroom, inside a boardroom, on the frontlines of a protest against injustice, working countries with different legal systems, or demanding redress in the halls of government. Every dispute, every trial, and every negotiation demands empathy and learning to view issues through the eyes of clients, colleagues, opponents, judges, and juries to achieve a just resolution.

A career in law never proves easy, but your alumni family stands ready to help.

The U.C. Hastings Alumni Association Board of Governors offers mentoring, alumni networking, educational programs and community building—whether you stay in San Francisco or venture to the East Coast, there’s an alumni chapter waiting for you. Jackie Speier (’76) Congresswoman, California 14th District Congresswoman Jackie Speier (’76) is a fearless fighter for women’s equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and the disenfranchised. She has dedicated her life to eliminating government corruption while working to strengthen America’s national and economic security. She was named one of Newsweek’s 150 “Fearless Women” in the world, and one of “Politico's 50” most influential people in American politics for bringing the #MeToo reckoning to Congress.

Congresswoman Speier proudly represents California’s 14th Congressional District, which stretches from the southern portion of San Francisco through San Mateo County to East Palo Alto. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. She also co-chairs the Democratic Women's Caucus, the Congressional Armenian Caucus, the Bipartisan Task Force to End Sexual Violence, and the Gun violence Prevention Task Force.

Congresswoman Speier received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Davis and her J.D. from UC Hastings Law. She is a proud fan of the San Francisco Giants, the Golden State Warriors, and a lover of all things California.

PRO BONO RECOGNITION The California Bar Association and the American Bar Association encourage Attorneys to devote at least 50 hours annually to the provision of pro bono (free) legal services. At UC Hastings, we believe the delivery of pro bono services is an integral part of legal education and the practice of law. TONY PATIÑO FELLOW-ELECT The Tony Patiño Fellowship was created to support those individuals whose personal and academic histories show leadership, academic achievement, ethical and honorable conduct, good moral character, dedication to human values, participation in public service activities, well-adjusted personality, and good judgment. The fellowship provides education and living expenses and is renewable for two subsequent consecutive academic years based on the fellow-elect’s personal and academic performance and his or her participation in the legal profession. Upon receiving the two renewals of fellowship, the final approval of the renewal committee, and a Juris Doctor degree, the fellow-elect is then known as a Tony Patiño Fellow.

DEGREE MAY 2021 In 2012, UC Hastings launched the Masters of Studies in Law (M.S.L.), an advanced degree program aimed to equip experienced professionals from various arenas with a sophisticated understanding of the law. The M.S.L., originally aimed at health and science professionals with the support of the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science, and Health Policy, has since expanded to include business and technology professionals, as well as those experts wishing to design their own program of legal study. CANDIDATE FOR THE H.P.L. DEGREE MAY 2021 In 2015, UC Hastings and UCSF began to offer the joint Masters of Science in Health Policy & Law (HPL) degree. The HPL is a multidisciplinary program that has attracted candidates with backgrounds ranging from medicine, to law, to business and journalism, all with a shared interest in advancing health and health care through policy and law. HPL alumni use their degree in a variety of professional settings around the country including health care administration, law, government, academia, nonprofits, clinical care, and scientific research.

During their 3L year, LfA fellows work nearly full-time in a closely supervised externship at a non-profit or government law office. After graduating and taking the bar exam, fellows return to the same placement site for a full year, earning a stipend paid by LfA.
