Celebrating a Culture of Service While actively engaging alumni and the community, the University of Central Missouri’s annual Homecoming celebration showcased the culture of service that permeates the campus environment. A student-led blood drive that attracted 535 donors, the community service day that provided a volunteer labor force of 651 people for 43 local projects, and a successful food drive that generated 4,045 pounds of food for families in need are great examples of how our campus gave back to the local community. This culture of serving others also was apparent as the university honored four extraordinary alumni who have distinguished themselves through their work on behalf of the university, their communities, state and nation.

The first-ever Distinguished Alumni Award for Service was presented to Dale Carder, who retired from the university in 2011 after serving as interim chief development officer and executive director of the UCM Foundation. Other honorees who are an inspiration to others were Distinguished Alumni U.S. Army Brig.

Gen. Arnold Neil Gordon-Bray; nationally known artist, photographer, cinematographer and conservationist Glenn Chambers; and NASA researcher Immanuel Barshi, the International Distinguished Alumnus.

Recalling their university experiences, these individuals shares stories about the personal influences they had from a caring faculty and staff who instilled in them an appreciation for service. It’s evident they also understand the value of UCM’s other attributes, such as engaged learning, future-focused academics and a worldly perspective. These are reasons to believe in a UCM education – they shape and define our graduates and give them the confidence they need to succeed long before they embark on their professional careers.

Tucked away from view will be the two-by-fours signed by those who contributed to the Bucks for Boards fundraiser and the countless screws, nails and building materials purchased or placed by the volunteers who now have a connection to this family and their new home. When the project is completed, the Franklin-Ybarra family, which includes three boys, ages 14, 12, and 10, and three girls, ages 8, 6 and 5, will move into their new home at 628 W. Gay St. in Warrensburg.

In a project dubbed “Building Community Through Education,” Johnson County Habitat for Humanity, the University of Central Missouri, and the Warrensburg R-VI School District have come together to make this

construction effort possible. It is the eighth Habitat home built in Johnson County, but the first time so many different groups and individuals in the community have worked sideby-side on a Habitat for Humanity project.

“This is a two-year initiative that began in fall 2011 with the idea that the first year would be fundraising, and this year will be focused on building. Our plan is to have a dedication for the house prior to UCM’s spring 2013 graduation ceremony,” said Shari Bax, university vice president for student experience and engagement.

Bax, who often joins UCM’s Breakers group in volunteering at Habitat sites across the country, is coordinating the (continued to page 4)

university’s participation in this project. She said the idea for this joint build actually came from UCM President Charles Ambrose, who has stressed the value of servant leadership opportunities for students and building community connections since he arrived on campus in 2010.

“Dr. Ambrose even came out on our first build day and helped raise some walls. He’s been very supportive,” Bax said.

Construction was launched with a Blitz Build in August, and since then there have been numerous opportunities for involvement, often tying in work days for specific groups such as alumni. Kristie Brinkley, the university’s volunteer coordinator, said there is no shortage of people willing to help.

“We had over 50 individuals and 10 groups registered by midSeptember,” said Brinkley, who has coordinated the Breakers’ Habitat experiences during spring breaks for the past 12 years.

Faculty and staff members have been involved in this building project, and they have been major fundraisers at the school district and university levels. Alumni such as Tony Hillsman, who donated the roofing services of his construction firm, also have had a significant impact on the home’s progress.

Much of the volunteer labor force, however, comes from university, middle school and high school students.

Construction management students at UCM and students from the Warrensburg Area Career Center are among those who have been active in the build, with the Career Center students taking on construction as part of their classroom learning experience. With help and supervision of their highly skilled teacher, Robert Mannering, their participation even has extended into areas such as plumbing and electrical work, which otherwise would have to be contracted by Habitat.

“It’s been a great learning process for our high school students and the students from schools that send to our Career Center because they are able to get on-the-job training and can see this project through from the ground up,” said Scott Patrick, superintendent of the Warrensburg R-6 School District.

Patrick said the district has strived to incorporate other opportunities for participation. Middle school and high school students who are enrolled in family and consumer science classes have contributed by helping to prepare

meals for volunteers working on the house. He also expects horticulture students to get involved this spring.

“We have a fully functioning greenhouse. This will be a perfect fit for students to actually have a house to landscape, to provide trees, bushes and flowers,” said Patrick, a 1988 UCM alumnus.

UCM students have looked for ways to support the project, even if they aren’t involved in the actual building process.

For example, Innovative Public Relations, a student public relations firm housed in University Relations, took on Building Community Through Education as a public relations project. Like their public school counterparts, students in family and consumer science courses at the university also are working with Habitat and Warrensburg students to coordinate meals. Some students have significant leadership roles.

The construction manager on the project for Habitat is Spenser Hicks, an engineer assistant at Whiteman Air Force Base. He shares responsibilities with Paige Becker, a UCM construction management student who is site leader. Both were honored at a Mules football game as “Hometown Heroes” for their contributions to the building effort.

“Paige and I have developed a great working relationship. She has more of the book and code knowledge, and I have more of the hands-on, real world experience,” Hicks said. “When I don’t know something, she does, and vice versa. This would be very difficult to accomplish if we weren’t working together.”

Becker, a student member of the local Habitat board and veteran member of Breakers, agreed that she and Hicks have made a good team. “This is the greatest learning experience a student of construction management can get. Being the site leader, getting materials, staying on schedule, working with volunteers, tackling problems at the site – all of these experiences put what we have learned in the classroom into practice.”

She admits that as a site leader there are some stressful moments making sure the project goes smoothly, but that isn’t what she takes away from her efforts. As Becker put it, any tension is “cancelled out by the unforgettable experience I receive, relationships I have made, and the opportunity to say, ‘Hey, I built that and Give us your feedback changed someone’s life.’” at ucmo.edu/today University of Central Missouri | today

Through the Open Doors

Deborah Curtis always wanted to teach. She entered the field of education as a music teacher and coach, and her passion for educating educators led her to a career in higher education.

Curtis was named provost and chief learning officer at the University Central Missouri earlier this year, succeeding George Wilson, who retired June 30. For Curtis, the move to UCM is another opportunity to facilitate the education of young adults, preparing them to meet the challenges of the world.

“I really thought I would obtain my degree and retire some years later after a successful career as a music teacher,” she said. However, she followed her own advice—the same advice she offers to students—and took advantage of opportunities as they came along.

“If you had told me when I was 22 years old and just coming out of graduate school that I would be doing this kind of work, I would have said, ‘Really?’ I still tell young people that life is a long corridor full of open doors and windows. Most of them offer opportunities, but it doesn’t mean you can’t come back through one and go through another one. Step through and try, because you’ll never know where you’re going to go.”

For Curtis, the opportunity to enter higher education came after she had taught and coached interscholastic athletics for 10 years. Her husband, Lynn, had accepted a position as a basketball coach, and she accepted a position teaching in the laboratory school at Indiana State University.

“I became thrilled with the experience of having college students in my classroom,” she said. “I loved the idea of teaching teachers to teach. It tapped something in me while teaching about teaching that I didn’t realize was there. That’s when I started on my doctorate in curriculum and instruction.”

Upon completion of her degree, she and her family settled in Normal, Ill., where she enjoyed a career at

Illinois State University. She left Illinois State in 2012 after 26 years at the institution and seven years as dean of the College of Education, and her husband had retired as a school superintendent. However, she wasn’t ready to leave higher education just yet.

“I really thought I wanted to try the next step in higher education administration,” she said. With a new provost at Illinois State, she believed such an opportunity would not be available there for a while, so she sought other opportunities.

“I told my husband I thought I was ready for an adventure,” she said. “When I saw the position was open at UCM, I did my research, and it seemed like a very good fit for me. With its history as a normal school and teacher education institution, it was very much like Illinois State.”

Cutis also noticed that UCM was working to grow enrollment, which was a new and exciting challenge for her. Due to the state budget crunch, Illinois State had been holding at a steady enrollment figure.

“I interviewed at another institution, and I went home and told my husband, ‘I can do that job,’ ” she said. “But after I interviewed at UCM, I went home and told him, ‘I want that job.’ I came away with the sense that this is a really strong institution that could be a really exciting place to be.”

First Class

For three University of Central Missouri freshmen, arrival on campus this fall with more than 1,700 first-year students signaled the beginning of a significant part of their lives.

During the initial days of their college careers, the three computer information systems majors experienced several firsts, including residence halls, life away from home and college-level coursework.

Jeff Kuntz, Keith Weston and Kayla Rogers-Sigetich also are the first UCM students to claim the title of Steward Scholars. They are the first recipients of the Steward Scholarships established by UCM alumnus David Steward ‘73 and his wife, Thelma, in 2011.

As founder, chair and majority owner of St. Louisbased World Wide Technology, Inc., the largest African American-owned corporation in America, Steward recognized the quality education he received at UCM was important to his own success. To assure that future students would benefit from the same, he and his wife pledged $500,000 to the UCM Foundation to start the Steward Scholars Program, the first of its kind at UCM. “I’ve been fortunate to have great people in my life — teachers, coaches and others — who cared enough about me to give me their very best,” Steward said.

“Giving support to those teachers and leaders in our system is extremely important. I’m excited to give back to my alma mater and create this signature scholarship program with so much potential to shape the future of technology.”

Steward Scholars will receive full tuition assistance in their pursuit of a Bachelor of Science degree in computer information systems. They also will receive international experiences and opportunities to collaborate with experts in technology fields that go above and beyond most scholarship programs.

For Kuntz, a graduate of Santa Fe High School in Alma, Mo., the decision to attend UCM and major in computer information systems seemed natural.

“I’ve always been interested in technology, and I knew I wanted to embark on a career related to computer systems,” he said.

For Rogers-Sigetich, a graduate of Marionville (Mo.) High School, the decision came from her familiarity with computers at home. After consideration, she knew UCM was the right choice for her. Weston, who graduated from Steward’s alma mater, Clinton (Mo.) High School, will combine his study of computer information systems with the study of criminal justice.

He envisions his future working with law enforcement in cybercrime investigation.

“It’s the wave of the future in law enforcement, and this will give me the understanding of the technology I need,” he said.

Finding the financial support to pay for college had been a concern for all three. When they learned they had been accepted after the application and interview process, they realized that they had received a lifechanging gift.

“Honestly, I didn’t know how I was going to pay for college,” Weston said. “The scholarship not only has given me a chance to attend now instead of having to wait, but it’s going to give me an opportunity to study abroad in England or Wales, which I never would have been able to do otherwise.”

For Rogers-Sigetich, it means being able to “do better than my family did. It’s given me a chance to make a life for myself and to meet the standards my family has set for me, as well as study and understand another culture, another place.”

The Old Main Fire

central yesterday It was during the wee hours of a cold, winter morning on Saturday, March 6, 1915, when a fire of disastrous proportions threatened to delay the opening of the spring term for students of Normal School No. 2 in Warrensburg. However, that threat was quickly diminished when the Warrensburg community rallied around the school and its faculty, staff and students to assure that classes would continue uninterrupted.

It was night fireman John Butler who looked out of the window of the powerhouse on the windy night to see Old Main, the school’s main classroom building, on fire. He quickly sounded the alarm, and the local fire department fought six inches of snow and a frozen fire hydrant in an attempt to save the building.

However, at daylight it became obvious that Old Main, which had been built in stages between 1872 and 1882, along with the Science Annex and the 10

Training School, had been destroyed. Although much of the furniture, including two pianos, had been carried from the Training School and saved, 45 years of academic records and 40,000 volumes that made up the school’s library also were lost.

Normal School President William J. Hawkins announced the next day the spring term would begin on Monday as scheduled, much to the amazement of some. However, with his announcement, the Warrensburg community sprang into action to assure that the president’s promise was kept.

Community leaders joined normal school administrators in surveying the community for locations in churches and public schools where classes could be held. Every church in the community offered facilities, as did the local fraternal organizations. Private homes with large rooms offered accommodations, as did Selmo Park,

the Nickerson home that was later to become the president’s residence. Classes started as promised, and the students in the Training School reported, as scheduled, on Tuesday morning.

Jesse J. Culp, president of Warrensburg’s Commercial Club, called a meeting of community leaders, and committees of business and community leaders were formed to assist normal school officials. A committee was formed to obtain books to replace those lost in the library, and a citizen committee departed for Jefferson City to meet with Gov. Elliott Major about funding to rebuild the Normal School.

Major called on the House and Senate to appropriate funds for reconstruction. Within days, legislators forwarded funding authorizations totaling $470,000, including $280,000 for a new administration building and science hall and to rebuild the training school,The fire also fed

the rumor mill that due to the massive loss, the Training School would leave Warrensburg and relocate to another community where facilities were readily available. The president of Normal School No. 1 in Kirksville even offered President Hawkins the opportunity to send the Normal No. 2 students to his school. The quick action of the governor and legislature quickly put to rest the rumors.

Construction began on the new Science Building, and the cornerstone for the new administration building was placed on July 11, 1916. Salvaged from the rubble of the fire, the cornerstone of Old Main later was placed in the base of the right gatepost at the north entrance to campus.

campus currents Homecoming Service Day a Success More than 650 University of Central Missouri students were visible throughout Warrensburg during Homecoming, offering their services to the community as part of UCM’s 2012 Homecoming Community Service Day. The number of volunteers set a new record as the largest group of students to participate in a UCM community service day. Student volunteers were sent out to 43 locations in Warrensburg. Many worked in small groups, completing tasks such as cleaning churches and doing fall yard work for senior citizens. More than 100 students assisted Warrensburg Main Street with downtown cleanup and the renovation, and a group of young women, under the supervision of UCM construction management student Paige Becker, began the task of placing siding on the Habitat for Humanity home under construction as a joint effort by Habitat for Humanity of Johnson County, UCM and the Warrensburg R-6 School District.

Enrollment Sets New Record The largest number of new freshman and transfer students in two decades has contributed to a record enrollment for the second consecutive year at the University of Central Missouri.

Data showing 11,878 total students, the most in the university’s 141-year history, was released by UCM following the Sept. 18 census date.

The total student enrollment represents a 2.1 percent increase from the previous year, and continues a string of annual enrollment increases since 2005. Contributing to the record enrollment are 1,006 transfer students,

2012 Distinguished Alumnus

Brigadier General Arnold N. Gordon-Bray

B

rigadier General Arnold N. Gordon-Bray can still remember what it was like to drink from different water fountains as a fifth grader growing up in then segregated Columbia, SC. Taking strong advice from his stepfather to strive for greater things, he went to college, became a military officer and climbed the ranks to lead thousands of soldiers of all races.

Gordon-Bray has served in the U.S. Army for 34 years. The former Mules basketball player graduated from UCM in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in art, and upon earning his diploma, he was commissioned as an officer as part of the ROTC program. He has since earned a Master of Science degree in international strategic studies from Air War College in Alabama and a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies from Naval War College in Rhode Island.

Gordon-Bray has served in the U.S. military throughout the world and earned numerous awards including two Bronze Star medals. He is currently deputy director of operations for the U.S. Africom, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, and is one of 340 general officers in an army of 1.4 million.

His career has included being brigade commander of the 82nd Airborne, serving in Iraq as the executive advisor to Iraqi Ground Forces, and service as the deputy commanding general of ROTC Cadet Command. He has twice led soldiers into combat in Iraq, with their lives, as well as the security of an entire region, relying on his leadership.

Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Colin Powell, and Gen. David Petraeus, now director of the CIA. He said he stands on the shoulders of men like Henry Flipper, the first AfricanAmerican to graduate from West Point and Gen. Roscoe Robinson, Jr., the first African-American four-star general.

For Gordon-Bray, the lessons learned at UCM came both on the basketball court and in the classroom. He found mentors who shaped his life in both places.

“Coach Tom Smith taught me lessons that became life lessons that I have used in my personal life and in battle,” Gordon-Bray said. “In the community, Judge (Robert) Russell also believed in me. He was, and is, an advocate for athletes, and he remains a resource for me in life.”

Gordon-Bray also fondly remembers the late Evelyn Louise Sims, professor emeritus of art, who mentored him as he completed his degree.

“When I think of her, I think of her encouragement, both to my talent and my potential. She saw the potential in me, and she refused to let me be any less than what she believed I could be,” he said.

He also remembers the influence of Guy Griggs, professor emeritus of history.

“He recognized the times when I did not desire to study, and he made the connections between my family and my education. He knew my mother was a teacher. When the challenges seemed overwhelming, he reminded me that my mother completed her degree with six kids.”

D

ale Carder established a reputation at UCM as a go-to man, someone who can take command of a situation when strong leadership is needed. His talent for knowing how to organize people was tapped for everything from integrated marketing and changing the university’s name to recruiting students and fundraising.

Such abilities contributed to Carder’s selection as the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service.

This honor was established in 2012 to recognize individuals who have given their time, talent and resources to enhance the university, their community or both and are a true inspiration to all UCM alumni.

Carder retired from UCM in December 2011 after serving as interim chief development officer and executive director of the UCM Foundation, one of many leadership positions he held during the more than 20 years he spent on campus. He grew up in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UCM in 1972. He later earned a Master of Arts in Human Resources degree from Pepperdine University and an Education Specialist in Public Services degree from UCM. Carder returned to UCM in 1991 as chair and professor in the Department of Military Science after a career in the U.S. Army, where he became a skilled helicopter pilot and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He contributed much to the university as a professor, academic advisor, department chair and administrator and had the

opportunity to give back through many leadership roles at the local, state and national level.

Carder has been active in the Greater Warrensburg Area Chamber of Commerce as former president and has been a member and leader in groups that support adult continuing education, tourism, military affairs and collegiate licensing. He currently serves as president of The Carder Group LLC, where he offers his knowledge to higher education institutions while still serving his community and university.

For Carder, UCM provided the foundation for his careers in the military and higher education administration.

He served as drum major for the Marching Mules as an underclassman and fondly remembers Russell Coleman as a faculty member who taught him to strive for the best.

“Dr. Coleman set a standard, and we met it,” he said. “We practiced to get it right, and it was. He was a person whose positive outlook and enthusiasm made him someone you did not want to disappoint.”

He recognizes his advantage in being able to return to his alma mater to have the same impact on young lives that he experienced.

“I guess I’ve always been the one who could go in and set things up and get them moving,” he said. “The changes at UCM have been impressive. Increased admission standards mean our students are ready, and new facilities like the Student Recreation and Wellness Center are amazing.”

W

hen Immanuel Barshi entered the University of Central Missouri as a freshman, faculty members in the Department of Aviation recognized he was no ordinary student. Because he already had significant flying experience under his belt, Professor John Horine invited him to become a senior flight instructor while completing an individualized Bachelor of Science degree in aviation.

His continued thirst for knowledge and heart for service eventually led him to become a leading expert in the field of human systems integration, linguistics, and aviation and space operations.

Barshi is the recipient of the International Distinguished Alumni Award, which was established in 2002. It recognizes the university’s distinguished international alumni who attended UCM as international students and have achieved professional distinction, either internationally or nationally and who exemplify the strength of their education at UCM. A native of Israel, Barshi completed his bachelor’s degree in 1987, and went on to also earn a Master of Arts in English degree in 1988 from Central Missouri.

He currently serves as a senior principal investigator in the Human Factors Division, formerly known as the Human Systems Integration Division, at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett, Calif. Barshi’s research addresses cognitive issues involved in the skilled performance of astronauts and pilots as well as mission controllers and air traffic controllers, their ability to manage challenging situations, and their vulnerability to error. The results of his work have been implemented in checklist design, operational procedures and training programs in space, aviation, medicine and nuclear facilities.

Barshi has doctoral degrees in linguistics and cognitive psychology and is an author and certified flight instructor with more than 35 years of flight experience.

Following high school, Barshi served for six years in the Israeli military. When he enrolled at UCM at age 30, he was already a seasoned commercial pilot and flight instructor who had lived in several different countries. His unique combination of education and skills prompted NASA to recruit and hire him. Today, his research is reshaping the way commercial flight crews interact with air traffic controllers and automated systems and is being used to modify communication between NASA astronauts and mission control.

For Barshi, the opportunity to study at UCM provided him with lifelong opportunities. Because Barshi arrived at UCM with significant experience in aviation, Horine helped him develop a course of study that fulfilled the requirements for his bachelor’s degree, telling him, “Don’t ever let school get in the way of your education.”

Barshi arrived with a desire to study language and linguistics at the graduate level, first acquiring his undergraduate degree. From his graduate studies, he fondly remembers Guy Griggs, professor emeritus of history, and Tom Gladsky and Mark Johnson, professors emeriti of English, as being among those who helped him develop a program of study that met his needs. He also paid for his schooling as a flight instructor in the Department of Aviation.

“These people had a profound effect on my life,” he said.

“They offered me leadership and friendship, along with the professional expertise I needed.”

Glenn Chambers

G

lenn Chambers tells a story about the time he sawed a corner off the family’s smokehouse door, just so he could take photographs of cardinals and chickadees with his Brownie camera. Although his father may have been a bit upset initially, after he saw what his 10-year-old son accomplished, his reaction was more of a congratulatory one. His son had discovered a passion for capturing images of wildlife, which stuck with him the rest of his life.

Chambers is a native Missourian who graduated from UCM in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in wildlife management from the University of Missouri in 1960. In addition to the UCM Distinguished Alumni Award, he was presented the honorary degree, Doctor of Science, by UCM in 2001 in recognition of his professional achievements that have made him an inspiration to others.

Most of Chambers’ career was spent with the Missouri Department of Conservation. He has traveled the globe, and his dedication to conservation has included serving as a wildlife artist, biologist, filmmaker, photographer and fundraiser. Chambers’ lifetime of achievements includes four television Emmy Awards, Conservationist of the Year, and his most recent achievement, his live river otter program.

With his “Paddlefoot Production,” Chambers’ passion for this unique program has taken him across state roads in excess of 800,000 miles over 12 years to educate youth about the re-introduction of river otters to Missouri. He also continues to pursue his favorite photographic subjects, prairie and arid land grouse, and advocates for their survival through habitat preservation. As a skilled cinematographer, Chambers specialized in documenting an animal’s journey from birth

through life. He and his family even raised some of the wildlife featured in his work. A renowned nature artist, he worked for Ducks Unlimited, and in 1984 his painting was selected as the official duck stamp for the state of Missouri.

During his long career with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Chambers’ work with river otters has gained him national acclaim.

As a scholarship student who came to UCM from Lee’s Summit High School, Chambers started college as an industrial arts major. But his acquaintance with Oscar “Oz” Hawksley and Laura Nahm, professors of biology, changed that. After his first two years, he changed his major to biology “Dr. Hawksley soon became my mentor on campus,” Chambers said. “He gravitated to the students who were interested in wildlife, and we gravitated to him. It became a great relationship early on, and it still is today. Dr. Nahm was a great instructor. She was great with smart students. I wasn’t that smart, but she wanted to make you smart. Nobody ever failed with Dr. Nahm. She made sure of that.”

When advising students interested in conservation, his advice is to “stay on the cutting edge. There will be things you’ll have to make happen. Take advantage of those opportunities.

I never thought, when I graduated from college that I would be a cinematographer, but when I was offered the opportunity, I took it.”

A family legacy, a student’s passion and a trip to the hairdresser intersected in an unexpected way, leading to a new scholarship and expanded student learning opportunities within one of the University of Central Missouri’s best-known programs.

UCM Aviation Connects with TWA Founder’s Family

By Angela Richard As University of Central Missouri aviation student Chris Nold learned to fly, he was often confused by the jargon of air traffic controllers. He found he wasn’t alone, so he came up with a solution—a communication training lab for flight students. The weekly lab gives students the opportunity to interact with real air traffic controllers and certified flight instructors in a virtual flight environment that simulates an airport with multiple aircraft taking off and landing.

“The unique and wonderful aspect of this lab is that the professionals volunteer their time to work with the flight students,” Nold said. “This allows the lab to be free to the students. This level of training and help, especially at no cost to the student, is truly remarkable.”

Nold’s efforts led to another outcome when his aunt, a hairdresser, bragged about him to one of her clients. Karen Holden Young is the granddaughter of Paul Richter, one of the co-founders of Trans World Airlines. Young, who lives in Mission Hills, Kan., has been working with her mother for several years to promote the legacy of her grandfather. When she learned that UCM has an aviation program, she got Karen Young excited. Her enthusiasm led to a major gift for the Department of Aviation from her family’s foundation.

“It was happenstance,” Young said. “When the hairdresser asked what I had been doing lately, I told her I was volunteering at the TWA Museum, and then I went into the history of TWA. Then she said, ‘You know, my nephew is an aviation student at UCM.’ My brain just went ‘ding-ding.’ I didn’t know that there was an aviation school so close, and I got excited.”

Nold’s passion and commitment to aviation impressed Young. His communication project reminded Young of what she knew about her grandfather’s passion for flying in the early days of aviation.

“The three guys who started TWA were aviators first.

They were students of flight themselves,” she said. “They discovered all sorts of things, like the de-icing equipment from B.F. Goodrich and autopilots. They invented and tested all these things that today are standard.”

Young added that what was truly unique about these early discoveries was how Richter and his co-founders freely shared information within the aviation community. She noted that especially in the early years, pilots were known to share information, as well as tools, parts and whole aircraft, if another pilot needed them.

Nold’s project connected with Young in another way. Young’s mother earned her pilot’s license when she was 55 years old, and she experienced the same confusion Nold did the first time she heard the air traffic controllers over the radio.

“The first time she got into the plane to fly, she was out at Johnson County (Kan.) Airport,” Young said. “She said, ‘This is so confusing, having the traffic controllers talking to me, my trying to fly and all the things I have to do.’”

With her interest piqued in UCM aviation, Young visited the campus in July and attended the ceremony announcing Tony Monetti as UCM’s new assistant dean of aviation and executive director of the Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport.

She said she found Monetti’s passion contagious and was excited about the plans he had for the future of UCM aviation and the airport. (continued to page 24) University of Central Missouri | today

Many people today remember TWA from the Howard Hughes, mid-century era, but the origins of the airline and the people responsible for it are less well known. Paul Richter was a young rancher from Colorado who traveled to California in the 1920s to learn to fly.

“When he discovered flying, his world changed,” Young said. Richter became a flight instructor and was involved in all aspects of early aviation—stunt flying for movies, crop dusting, aerial photography, air sheriffs and mail transport.

Young was convinced that the UCM aviation program was right in line with the goals of her family’s foundation, so she worked with the UCM Foundation to create the Paul E. Richter TWA Scholarship Fund.

The largest part of the family’s gift will fund annual scholarships for aviation students, which can be used for academic expenses or the added cost of flight time. Paying for flight time can be an obstacle for some aviation students, sometimes leaving gaps between when a topic is covered in the classroom and when the student experiences it in the cockpit. Many other academic scholarships do not provide this flexibility.

The gift also provides discretionary funds for the Department of Aviation to use on projects that will improve the student learning experience. This year the department is using part of the gift to purchase iPads with specialized software for the certified flight instructors to use in the cockpit.

The family wants people to know about Richter’s inspiring life and career, as well as the exciting and courageous people who were part of the golden era of flight. For a man whose pilot’s license was signed by Orville Wright, Richter was responsible for bringing aviation into the modern era.

Richter died several years before Young was born, but she always knew her grandfather was connected to TWA because of the photos around her grandmother’s home.

“We knew our grandfather was a bigwig in TWA,” she said, “but it wasn’t until we were older and my mother would say something like ‘I really need to preserve the early heritage’ that we became aware of the stunt flying and his accomplishments with safety and things like that.”

In 1926, Richter, along with Jack Frye and Walter Hamilton, bought the flying school where they had learned to fly and started the Standard Flying School and Aero Corporation.

In 1927, they started Standard Airlines, which flew from southern California to Arizona and Texas. Small airlines were cropping up around the country, and many merged into larger regional airlines. Richter and his partners, through a series of mergers, were soon running the combined Transcontinental Air Transport and Western Air (TWA).

With Frye as executive and Hamilton as engineer, Richter oversaw operations. He was a meticulous recordkeeper, initiating the use of flight logs and flight plans. He won numerous awards for his high-altitude and speed flying and was constantly testing new aircraft and equipment. Richter continuously tried to get his planes and pilots to fly higher, faster and farther while still being safe.

Richter focused on TWA throughout the 1930s, helping the airline grow from wooden ships to jets. In 1930, TWA was awarded a government mail contract and started a 36-hour coast-to-coast service with overnight in Kansas City. Because of that, TWA headquarters was relocated to Kansas City, Mo., in 1931. They bought the Boeing 307B “Stratoliner,” and in 1940 they initiated the first coast-to-coast passenger service with pressurized cabins and in-flight audio entertainment — taking only 13 hours and 40 minutes.

Richter was sitting on the dock waiting when World War I ended in 1917. Yet, he was extremely vital to the development of naval and military air transport during World War II. As a captain in the U.S. Navy, he traveled the world establishing international air bases and organizing operations for troop and equipment movement. He earned many honors and awards for his work during the war. Richter left TWA in 1947 after Howard Hughes took control. He died in 1949 at the age of 53.

Young is proud of furthering her family’s aviation legacy.

tenure, the Alta Ham Fine Arts building and the Frank and Estella Beam Hall were built, and the Thomas & Mack Center was completed. He received an honorary degree from UCM in 2000 and was named a Distinguished Nevadan in 2006.

During his tenure, the JRAC successfully addressed 29 IWNs valued at more than $381 million and exercised the JRAC’s authority to expedite the reprogramming of more than $400 million for 16 classified programs identified as IWNs. The JRAC streamlined the normal lengthy acquisition process to ensure that U.S. commanders who engaged in combat were rapidly equipped with state-of-theart technology.

He was the author of nine books and co-publisher of a monthly financial newsletter, “No-Load Portfolios.” His final book, “An Investor’s Memoir,” was published in 2012.

Leonard E. “Pat” Goodall, 75, a 1986 recipient of the UCM Distinguished Alumni Award, died July 2, 2012, at his home in Las Vegas.

The Warrensburg native received a bachelor’s degree in social science in 1958 from UCM. He earned a master’s degree in political science at the University of Missouri and a doctorate in political science at the University of Illinois.

Goodall had a successful career as an administrator in higher education.

He was president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; chancellor of the University of Michigan Dearborn; and vice chancellor at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle. He also was a professor at Arizona State University and UNLV. Goodall was UNLV’s fourth president, serving from 1979 to 1984. He helped establish the UNLV Foundation and the Barrick Lecture Series. and wife, Sharon; David E. Goetz and wife, Glenda; and Donald K. Goetz and wife Tami; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Charles Kuhn Jr.

Robert “Bob” Goetz Sr., assistant dean emeritus of the University of Central Missouri, died Aug. 10, 2012.

Charles Kuhn Jr., professor emeritus of business and former chapter advisor of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at the University of Central Missouri, died Aug. 25, 2012.

Goetz was a 1943 UCM alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts and technology. He also earned a master’s degree at Colorado State College of Education and a doctorate from the University of Missouri.

He served during World War II as a navigator and instructor for B-17s and B-29s in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg, where he served as trustee, Sunday School teacher and a member of the Chancel Choir for 52 years. He was also a member of the American Legion and Boy Scouts of America Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Goetz served on UCM’s faculty for 38 years in the applied sciences and technology area and helped to develop the graphic arts technology department.

He served as president of the American Industrials Arts Association and the Ohio Industrial Arts Association and was a member of the Mississippi Valley Industrial Arts conference.

Survivors include his wife, Rickey Irene Goetz; three sons, Robert E. Goetz Jr.

Kuhn attended schools in Bosworth, Mo., before attending the University of Central Missouri where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in Business and English in 1951. After completing master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Iowa, he taught briefly in Easton, Mo., before joining the UCM business faculty in 1957.

Kuhn was an avid and generous UCM supporter. He was respected as a tough professor and caring mentor who stayed in touch with many of his students following his retirement in 1987.

In addition to serving for three decades as TKE advisor, he also directed the university’s homecoming activities for many years. He enjoyed his association with Pi Omega Pi, the national business education honorary, and Delta Sigma Pi, the professional business fraternity. He also was an emeriti member of the UCM Foundation Board of Directors.

He is survived by a brother, Jerry N.

Kuhn; a nephew, Robbie; a greatnephew and a great-niece.

Memorial gifts may be designated toward endowments that Kuhn established in entrepreneurship, theatre or music with the UCM Foundation.

Leonard Mysiewicz

Leonard Mysiewicz, 81, a loyal supporter of athletics at the University of Central Missouri, died Sept. 29, 2012.

He was the husband of retired UCM employee Susie Mysiewicz. They married in 1983. He was a supervisor with Illinois Central Railroad and later METRA Passenger Rail, retiring in 1991.

In addition to his wife Susie, survivors include five children: Leonard E. Mysiewicz, Richard A. Mysiewicz, Mark L. Mysiewicz, James W. Mysiewicz and Katheryn A. Ber; two stepchildren: Tracy Hillygus and Patrick Hillygus; 10 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, and two sons, Robert B. Pierce Jr. and Christopher R.N. Pierce; one grandson, Johnathon Brett Pierce; and stepgranddaughter, Sabrena Lee Lynn Fetters; two brothers: William O. Pierce and wife, Charlotte, and David Pierce; two sisters: Mary Frances Pierce and Marilyn Vaughn; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Ulrich, 83, professor emeritus of safety at the University of Central Missouri, died Aug. 18, 2012.

Robert “Bob” Pierce, professor emeritus of business and former dean of the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies, died July 26, 2012.

Pierce served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1954, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University, followed by a

Survivors include his wife, Marion; daughters Barbara Sue Ulrich and Janet Lyn Ulrich Brooks, and granddaughter Laura E. Meyer Bolsen.

William Blaine Whitworth

William Blaine Whitworth, 25, Warrensburg, a UCM alumnus and owner of two downtown Warrensburg businesses, Bodie’s and Molly’s, died Sept. 1, 2012.

He was a graduate of Sherwood High School and received a bachelor’s degree in safety management from UCM in 2009, working as a safety advisor on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and Singapore. He returned to Warrensburg in 2011 and purchased Bodie’s in downtown Warrensburg. In 2012 he also opened Molly’s, a bar and restaurant in downtown Warrensburg.

He is survived by his parents, Barry and Diane Whitworth; two brothers, Tyler and Tucker Whitworth; a sister, Corby Suptic; his grandmother, Mollie Famuliner; two nieces and two nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blaine Whitworth Scholarship Fund with the UCM Foundation.

Ulrich joined the UCM safety faculty in 1968. He became a full professor in safety science and technology, retiring in 1991.
