During orientation, you will have the opportunity to learn about the many resources listed in this handbook that have been created to help you succeed. I strongly encourage you to keep this guide as a reference and be sure to utilize the resources we have designed, such as the Success Advising Center, to ensure your time at UCM is enjoyable, rewarding and fulfilling. Within the Success Advising Center, we will partner you with a central navigator to ensure you receive the assistance you need to maximize your educational experience. NEW STUDENT CHECKLIST DURING YOUR ON-CAMPUS ENROLLMENT DAY Finalize your enrollment into your classes with your success advisor.

Get your student ID card in Union 207A after meeting with your advisor. Your class schedule and a photo ID are required.

Read and check the financial agreement and data verification in MyCentral at mycentral.ucmo.edu when prompted.

AFTER YOUR ENROLLMENT DAY Set up your email and network ID 24 hours after your enrollment day by logging in to MyCentral and visiting the “Network Password Portlet” under the “Student/Records and Registration” tab.

Complete and return the required immunization form and a copy of your immunization records to the University Health Center located at 600 S. College. Paperwork is available at ucmo.edu/immunpolicy.

Students must attend each class on the first day the class is scheduled in order to stay enrolled in the class. IMPORTANT TERMS DEFINED CREDIT HOUR

One credit hour is typically given for a course that meets one hour per week. A three-credit-hour course will usually meet for 50 minutes three days a week, Monday (M), Wednesday (W), and Friday (F). If the class meets on Tuesday (T) and Thursday (R), expect the class to last an hour and 15 minutes.

FULL-TIME STUDENT

A full-time student at UCM takes at least 12 credit hours per semester. Students need to average 15-16 credit hours per semester to graduate in four years.

MAJOR AND MINOR

Choosing both a major and a minor is ideal for students with primary and secondary academic interests.

OPEN OPTION

Open Option is a term to describe a student who is still exploring options and has not yet declared a major. It is recommended that you choose a major by the time you have taken 30 credit hours.

SUCCESS ADVISING

UCM is a dedicated partner in each student’s journey and delivers the right resources at the right time to help them be successful and graduate on time with less debt. A majorspecific success advisor is assigned to each student and is their go-to resource for academic support throughout their university career.

SUCCESS ADVISING CENTER UCM is the only school in Missouri with an innovative Success Advising Center and a success team assigned to every student. Peer success coaches, admissions reps, academic advisors, career advisors, financial aid counselors and faculty mentors help you navigate through your time at UCM and get the best experience possible.

Academic advising is an essential part of your success at UCM. At least once each semester, you should meet with your success advisor to discuss your progress

toward your degree and course selection for the next semester. Class enrollment for summer and fall semesters begins in March, and spring semester enrollment begins in October. At UCM, the date on which you may enroll in classes is based on the number of credit hours you have earned (does not include in-progress work). FINANCIAL AGREEMENT AND DATA VERIFICATION Registration for classes creates a legally binding financial obligation to pay tuition and fees per official university policy. Prior to registration, all students must agree to the UCM Student Financial Agreement in MyCentral. In addition, students must verify current mailing address and phone number. Until this is completed, access to normal MyCentral functions will be disabled.

DEGREE AUDIT Your Central Degree Audit gives you a complete picture regarding which degree requirements have been met, are in progress and are remaining. It is a quick look that can be used to check your progress in your degree program. It also serves as a personalized academic planning tool for students and their advisors.

Gain access to your Central Degree Audit via your MyCentral account. Once logged in, select the “Student” tab, “Records and Registration” and then “Central Degree Audit.” Click the “DegreeWorks” button.

A new window will open (outside of MyCentral), and your current Central Degree Audit will show on the screen. Central degree defaults to the “Student View.”

You also may choose to show only uncompleted requirements by selecting “Registration Checklist” and selecting the “View” button.

You may choose to save the Student View or the Registration Checklist as a PDF (change the file format to “.pdf” then save the document). You are reminded to print and save a copy of your Central Degree Audits prior to enrolling in classes and again after processing enrollment. You are encouraged to keep electronic copies of your Central Degree Audits for your permanent academic files.

TRANSFER CREDIT UCM maintains thousands of transfer course equivalencies at ucmo.edu/corequiv. Credit evaluation is a process shared by UCM and the student.

Upon admission, courses are reviewed for possible equivalencies to UCM classes. Any remaining courses not approved as UCM equivalents, which show on the degree audit with a prefix of “ELCT,” are eligible to be considered for re-evaluation. Students can submit courses that are not already approved as UCM equivalents for re-evaluation at ucmo.edu/articulation.

Courses that are not approved may be used as a one-time substitution for general education, major or minor requirements. Speak with your success advisor to determine if this is a possibility.

Remember to send transcripts from any colleges that awarded you dual credit in high school to UCM’s Office of Admissions.

OTHER CREDIT In certain circumstances, UCM will award credit for prior learning (CPL) based on recommendations from the National College Credit Recommendations Services, the American Council on Education and through evaluation of prior work experience. To determine if CPL is possible, contact the Extended Studies director of academic outreach at 660-543-8926 (Humphreys Building, Room 410).

Credits by exam are based on nationally normed standardized exams. The following exams are accepted for review at UCM for possible course credit. Tests marked by an asterisk (*) are administered by UCM’s Testing Services.

SCHEDULE PLANNER

MYCENTRAL STUDENT ENROLLMENT

Schedule Planner is a software application that allows you to quickly and easily plan your optimal class schedules. You can use Schedule Planner to see all possible combinations of schedules that are available based on the specific courses and break times (work, athletic practice, etc.) that are chosen.

1. Log in to MyCentral.

2. Click “Records and Registration” under the “Student” tab.

3. Click “Registration and Planning.”

4. Select “Register for Classes.”

5. Choose the appropriate term under the drop-down menu, then click continue.

6. Use the “Find Classes” tab to search for courses.

7. Click “Add” to the right of the class.

8. Under the Summary section, be sure to hit “Submit.”

9. Repeat steps six through eight as appropriate.

You may begin planning schedules as soon as the course offerings are available in MyCentral. Fall course offerings are available in late January, spring course offerings are available in mid-September, and summer course offerings are available in mid-December. Use of Schedule Planner is optional. Planning a class schedule in Schedule Planner does not constitute registering for classes. Enrollment must be done via MyCentral.

How to Use the Schedule Planner 1. Visit mycentral.ucmo.edu 2. Log in to MyCentral with your 700 number and password.

3. Choose “Student” tab, then “Records and Registration.”

4. In the “Registration” menu, select the “Schedule Planner” link.

5. Select the term you wish to view and follow instructions. Add the courses you want to take next term.

6. Add breaks to block off times for no class.

7. Click “Generate Schedules” to view schedules.

8. When you’ve found a schedule you like, click “Send to Shopping Cart.” This will send you to MyCentral, where you can enroll.

9. Be sure to hit submit once in MyCentral and confirm that your schedule is enrolled properly, as you planned.

ENROLLMENT TIPS Here are some important tips to keep in mind when you are planning your enrollment: 1. Full-time enrollment for an undergraduate student is 12 or more credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, a student enrolled in nine credit hours is considered full time academically. For financial aid purposes, 12 credit hours is considered full time. Please note that an average of 15 hours per semester is required to graduate in four years.

2. Make sure you meet the prerequisites for a course before you attempt to enroll. You can see the prerequisites in MyCentral under “Browse for Courses.” Also check the catalog listing for your degree program and talk to your advisor to be sure you are enrolling in appropriate courses.

3. Check with your success advisor or faculty mentor to find out when the courses you need for your degree will be offered. Some courses are offered only once per year, and some are offered every other year.

ADDING AND DROPPING COURSES

CIVICS EXAM REQUIREMENT

Once the semester begins, any changes in your schedule should be made during the drop/add period, which is the first four days of class of the semester, or first three days for half-semester courses. It is better to make any necessary changes before class begins, but if you are not able to do that, you must make the changes before the drop/add period is complete. Please note that the drop/add period is different for summer sessions and for courses on variant schedules.

Missouri state law requires that all students successfully pass an examination on American civics. The subject matter of the 50-question, multiple-choice test includes the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and other areas of government and American history. Students may fulfill this requirement by passing an exam offered in Blackboard or by providing proof on an official transcript of having passed the exam at another Missouri higher education institution. This test is offered online at no cost.

You can find refund dates (100%, 50% and 25%) and last days to drop for all of your classes in MyCentral in the “Student” tab at the link “Check Refund and Withdrawal Dates.” More information can be found at ucmo.edu/registrar/dates.

It is your responsibility to make sure that you have dropped any courses you meant to drop or added any courses you meant to add. If you do not drop a course and then fail to attend, you will get an “F” grade for that class. If a hold is preventing enrollment and you have questions, speak with your success advisor. You can always check your schedule through MyCentral.

Dropping classes may affect future course enrollment (prerequisites and course sequencing). Check with Student Financial Services regarding any financial consequences prior to dropping below full-time status.

THE WAITLIST Things to know about the waitlist: • If there is an open section of the same course, it is generally better to go with the open class than to hope for enrollment in the waitlisted section.

• You cannot be enrolled in one section of a class and waitlist a different section of the same class.

• If you waitlist a class that is at the same time as a course in which you are enrolled, you will not be enrolled into the waitlisted class.

• Prerequisite rules apply to waitlisted courses. The waitlist will not enroll you into a course for which you do not meet the prerequisites.

• Keep track of your waitlisted classes. If you are enrolled into a class from the waitlist, you are responsible for paying for the class.

• It is first come, first served.

• It is active through last day of add/drop.

• If you are already enrolled in your maximum allowed hours, the waitlist will not enroll you in additional hours.

Students are encouraged to take and pass the test during their first semester at UCM. The test may be taken any number of times until a passing score of at least 70% is earned. Students who have not passed the exam by the time they have reached 60 credit hours will have a hold on their account and be prevented from enrolling in future coursework until the exam is successfully passed. Questions about the content of the test may be referred to the School of Social Sciences and Languages (Wood 203; 660-543-8840). Testing information may be obtained by calling the Testing Center at 660-543-4919.

GENERAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT To satisfy the General Education Assessment policy, students must take the GEA as soon as they have earned at least 60 credit hours. Transfer students with at least 45 credit hours should test no later than their second semester at UCM. To pass the GEA, students must earn a minimum total score of 425 on the exam.

Students may register for the GEA through MyCentral.

Instead of taking the ETS Proficiency Profile, teacher education majors must take and pass all sections of the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA), as required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

HOLDS ON YOUR ACCOUNT You can check your hold(s) by logging in to MyCentral.

to Contact” link for the contact information for the office(s) that placed hold(s) on your account. Contact the office(s) that placed the hold(s) to learn how to resolve them.

HAVING HOLDS REMOVED You should plan to have your hold(s) removed prior to your enrollment access date. To view your hold(s), go to your MyCentral account and click on the “Holds” link at the bottom of your “Academic Profile” module, located on the right. Your enrollment access date is determined by your earned credit hours, and it does not include the hours you currently have in progress. To ensure the best selection of courses, you are strongly encouraged to complete your enrollment on this day. More than 700 students register each day, so waiting even one day can make a big difference in your schedule. Find out when you can enroll at ucmo.edu/enroll.

IMMUNIZATION POLICY Students born on or after Jan. 1, 1957, must comply with the MMR immunization policy, which requires two vaccines against measles and one against mumps and rubella. The first measles vaccine or combination measles/mumps/rubella vaccines must have been given at the age of 12 months or older. A second vaccine for measles or MMR must have been administered at least one month after the first one. A completed immunization form should be turned in to the University Health Center. A copy of an immunization record documenting the vaccine is required. The state of Missouri requires that all students living in university housing have documentation of having received the meningococcal vaccine after their 16th birthday.

Students may not move into university housing without documentation of this vaccine on record. More information can be found at ucmo.edu/immunpolicy.

PUBLIC SAFETY Our campus is protected by 19 uniformed police officers – including Sgt. Echo the Police Dog – a uniformed student patrol team and several campus safety tools including the mobile app, Campus Eye. For more information, visit ucmo.edu/ps.

TEXTCASTER In order to make campus communications as timely as possible, UCM offers a voluntary text messaging service.

Students, faculty and staff who choose to subscribe have the opportunity to receive: • Crime notices • Emergency alerts • Information about school closings or delays • Notices from Accessibility Services • Severe weather alerts There is no charge to sign up, but participants are encouraged to contact their service provider to learn about charges that may apply. SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION EDUCATION The 2014 federal Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act requires all new students to complete a sexual and interpersonal violence prevention education program.

Select the appropriate link on the right side of the “Records and Registration” page under the “Student” tab. Part 1 should be completed before classes begin and will take about 45 minutes to complete. Information about Part 2 will be sent via student email 45 days after completion of Part 1. New freshmen under the age of 24 must also complete AlcoholEdu, which is available in MyCentral.

COMPUTER IDS AND PASSWORDS Students at UCM have three sets of user IDs and passwords: MyCentral ID and password MyCentral is used for activities such as enrolling for classes, paying bills, checking grades and more.

Network ID and password Your network ID is used to log in to campus computers, UCM email, Blackboard and UCMO WiFi. It should look something like this: mxh12340. Your network ID and password can be found in MyCentral. Log in to MyCentral and go to the “Records and Registration” page under the “Student” tab. In the “Network Password Portlet,” you’ll see your network ID. Below that you’ll see a place to enter a new password. You don’t need to know your old password; you simply can change your network password at any time.

Email UCM’s email is powered by Google. To log in, visit gmail.com and enter your full UCM email address.

That email address will be your network ID, followed by @ucmo.edu. It should look something like this: mxh12340@ucmo.edu. To sign in to your email for the first time, log in to MyCentral and change your network password.

This email system is the official communication channel for the university, so it is important to check your email often.

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT Under the Federal Privacy Act of 1974, students have the right to access their educational records, the right to request an amendment to those records and to have a hearing if the request is denied, the right to consent to disclosure of their information unless consent is not required by FERPA, and the right to file a complaint with the Family Policy Compliance Office. Students also have the right to suppress directory information.

Directory Information Directory information is not generally considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed.

This includes, but is not limited to: • Name, address, email and phone listing • County, state or U.S. territory from which the student originally enrolled • Major field of study • Class (junior, senior, etc.)

• Enrollment status (full time, part time, etc.)

• Weight and height of members of athletic teams • The most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student • Honors information • Field of study • Date and place of birth • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports • Dates of attendance, degrees and awards Directory information cannot include: • Student identification numbers • Social security numbers • Ethnicity/race/nationality • Gender • Probation status • Grades • Courses in which the student is enrolled • Hours earned Grades and GPAs are not released to agencies or persons outside the university without the written consent of the student. Grades and GPA information are not given out over the telephone to anyone.

Students may authorize UCM to release information to their parents or family members regarding educational files, financial aid information or student accounts by completing the “Authorization for Release of Information” form located at ucmo.edu/ferpa.

The university does not sell student information; however, unless a student requests in writing to the contrary, federal law permits the university to release directory information.

All questions regarding student rights should be directed to the Office of the Registrar and Student Records in Ward Edwards 1000.

STUDENT ID CARDS As a new student, make sure you get your student ID card in Elliott Student Union 207A. University services that can be accessed through your student ID include bookstore and library services, meal plans, vending, laundry, copy services, gym access, free use of athletic equipment and free admission to athletic events. You must have a copy of your schedule, your 700 number and photo ID to obtain your student ID card. Photoless ID cards are available. For more details, email extstudies@ucmo.edu.

UNIVERSITY STORE The University Store offers a wide variety of products including UCM apparel, gifts and gift cards. The University Bookstore offers textbooks, miscellaneous books and magazines, school supplies and art materials. The stores accept cash, credit and debit cards, financial aid or UCM debit accounts with a valid photo ID. A student ID is required when paying with financial aid or a UCM debit account. ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES The Office of Accessibility Services provides equal opportunity for students with disabilities (having a permanent or long-term impairment). Students provide documentation of the disability and with OAS staff determine accommodations necessary to achieve equal opportunity. NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT SERVICES

Located on the third floor of the JCK Library, the Learning Commons offers tutoring for more than 50 courses, study sessions, test prep and the Writing Center — free resources to any UCM student. MILITARY AND VETERAN SERVICES (MVS)

University Housing is excited to offer students housing opportunities in either a residence hall or apartment setting (pending availability). Enjoy the flexibility of one bill, making great friends and being close to all of the campus activities. New transfer students with 48 or more UCM-accepted credit hours have the option to reside off or on campus. Those with less than 48 UCM-accepted hours are required by the UCM Board of Governors to reside on campus. Students can apply for housing (residence halls and apartments) via their MyCentral account under the “Student” tab. Students wishing to file for exemption may download the Request for Exemption from UCM’s “Residency Form” located at ucmo.edu/housing under forms and resources.

UCM’s Military and Veterans Success Center provides a safe, secure and supportive environment for your transition to college life by connecting you with other military and veteran students, study groups, a computer lab and assistance from dedicated staff members. The center’s staff offers assistance with your education, health care and job placement needs. Find helpful MVS resources at ucmo.edu/vets.

HOW TO ACCEPT FINANCIAL AID

Opportunity should be available to everyone, and we work hard to keep it that way! Not only are UCM’s costs lower than most colleges in Missouri and the national average, but we also provide many scholarship opportunities.

In MyCentral, navigate to the Student Financial Services drop-down menu under the “Student” tab. In the “Financial Aid” box: • Select Award Offers and Acceptance • Select Accept Financial Aid Offers for Award Year • Select Appropriate Aid Year • Select Accept Awards Offer

UCM Bound Out-of-State Scholarship This scholarship allows incoming, regularly admitted students whose permanent residence is in one of the eight states bordering Missouri to pay in-state tuition and fees for all classes on the main campus in Warrensburg.

Red and Black Scholarship This scholarship allows incoming, regularly admitted students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to receive up to $4,500 instantly and is renewable for up to four years.

UCM Transfer Scholarships UCM offers several transfer scholarships to incoming transfer students who have never attended UCM. These particular scholarships are renewable for up to six semesters.

UCM SCHOLARSHIP FINDER UCM Scholarship Finder (formerly MoCents) is UCM’s online system that allows students to apply for multiple scholarships at one time. Students only fill out ONE application, which is automatically submitted toward eligible scholarships.

Award Decision Please make your selection from Undecided/Accept/ Decline. You may choose to accept less than the amount offered by entering the amount in the box to the right.

PAYING YOUR BILL Registration for classes creates a legally binding financial obligation to pay tuition and fees according to official university policy. You are responsible for paying all charges incurred by your class enrollment, room and board choices, laboratory charges, materials used, department fines and other charges. Any financial assistance should be arranged prior to the beginning of classes through the Office of Student Financial Services.

All statements will be posted online in MyCentral with a notice sent to your student email address. Students in good financial standing may establish a budget payment plan online through MyCentral.

Methods of Payment Payment methods may be used to pay the charges on the student account. Options include: • Pay in person with cash, debit card, check or money order to the Office of Student Financial Services, Ward Edwards 1100. Payment by credit card, counter or starter check is not accepted. Checks that do not have preprinted personal information on them will not be accepted. A drop box located by the south door of the office is available for paying after hours. Make checks payable to University of Central Missouri.

Checks issued to the University of Central Missouri will be electronically drafted from the customer’s checking account. In the event that the transaction is returned unpaid, the customer agrees to have his/her account electronically drafted for a return check charge of $25 and the amount of the check. Items returned unpaid will be submitted for repayment the maximum times allowed by law.
