UCDS marked this year by celebrating the remarkable career of Paula Smith, honoring her thirty-five years of visionary leadership, inspiration, and dedication to advancing education and empowering educators. We were thrilled to celebrate her legacy and lasting impact on our school community.

Cultivating Learning and Growth At the heart of UCDS is our commitment to fostering curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Last year, students immersed themselves in innovative, hands-on learning experiences: • In Design and Tech, Early Elementary and 1-2 students engineered zipline trolleys, refining designs through trial and error while building critical thinking and resilience.

• Our 5th-grade students explored motion in art, inspired by a visit to the Seattle Art Museum's Calder: In Motion exhibit. Their mobile creations combined engineering with storytelling, a testament to their growing interdisciplinary skills.

• From salmon hatcheries to the Granite Curling Club, field trips tied classroom learning to realworld experiences, deepening our students’ understanding of their community and environment.

Connecting with Community UCDS thrives on relationships—among students, families, faculty, and the broader community.

Highlights of the year include: • Partnerships with organizations like the Seattle Art Museum and the Port of Seattle enriched our curriculum and strengthened ties to local culture and industry.

• Parent and guardian participation in workshops and events that fostered deeper home-school connections.

• Peer teaching opportunities where older students mentored younger ones, creating a culture of collaboration and leadership.

Celebrating Success and Innovation Our faculty and staff continues to lead with passion and excellence. Last year, we celebrated the contributions of long-time staff members while welcoming new educators who bring fresh perspectives and ideas. These investments in our team ensure that UCDS remains at the forefront of educational innovation.

We are also proud to share that our alum continue to thrive, with many returning to express how UCDS prepared them for success in academics, leadership, and life. Their stories are a powerful testament to the enduring value of our approach to education.

A Timeline of Paula’s Impact on UCDS & Beyond

1988

THEMATIC CURRICULUM Paula shaped a forwardthinking curriculum, uniting Math Vitamin, Read Aloud, and Specialist projects through an annual theme.

PAULA JOINS UCDS AS A TEACHER When Paula arrived, UCDS was a small, quirky UW lab school. How did it grow into a beacon in early elementary education? In a word, Paula!

Math Vitamin engages all students with key math concepts, using manipulatives to foster problem-solving and understanding the “why.”

PAULA BECOMES THE HEAD OF SCHOOL “It was clear early on that Paula stood out from the crowd for her vision of what the school COULD be.”

RESIDENT TEACHER PROGRAM Paula instituted the dynamic Resident Program, pairing new educators with mentors. Over half of UCDS’ senior teachers began as Residents.

Spark launched ImmersiFIRE and online resources to make teacher PD engaging and accessible. During COVID, over 50k educators used these tools in daily teaching.

Paula played an integral part in adding the InfantToddler Education Program (“The Studio”) to support faculty and staff sustainability; to 05 provide a dynamic learning environment for our youngest students; and to professionalize child care.

2008

Ascend International School in Mumbai approached Paula about replicating both the UCDS philosophy and the creative use of space.

UCDS educators helped bring this vision to life.

SPARK INTITATIVE

With funding from NSF Grants, UCDS and UW dramatically improved math instruction at several low-performing Seattle Public Schools throughout this 8-year project.

THE LABYRINTH Under Paula’s vision and leadership, UCDS raised $10M to build the Labyrinth and unite all of our students on one campus. It was designed to amplify the curriculum through the creative use of space and has done so for 20+ years now.

GK-12 PARTNERSHIP

Paula drove the buildout of a $10M endowment, a rare early education initiative, enabling $1.2M annually for tuition assistance and competitive teacher pay.

This program unites key elements: empowering experienced teachers, infusing fresh ideas, attracting top talent pursuing Master’s degrees, and elevating early education professionalism.

The UCDS Institute (formerly known as the Teacher Education Center) launched as a way to develop our educators and to institutionalize & share our innovative teaching culture beyond the walls of UCDS.

l e v e L y r e v t E e t a e o Exploring M v m n Cardboard Magic in the Early Elementary Inspired by their Read Aloud book, Sejal Sinha Battles Superstorms, our Early Elementary (EE) students worked together over many weeks to imagine and create structures out of cardboard boxes.

“Cardboard boxes have a lot of magic that grown-ups just don’t get. They can turn into anything and take you anywhere. Need a submarine to go to the bottom of the ocean? Need a machine to dig to the center of the earth? Need a train to take you deep into a mine filled with crystals?

EE classrooms collaborated on their own designs and invented structures to bring their ideas to life. The only requirement: it had to MOVE. “This was an excellent opportunity to bring the student’s love of cardboard and our theme together, and practice the skill of design,” explained EE Division Head, Quyhn Nguyen. Students were proud of their installations, brainstorming and constructing a variety of creations like an airplane, Ferris wheel, zoo animals, and giant Pikachu!

tnemevoM gnirolpxE Ziplines in Design & Tech with the 1-2s 1-2 students delved into the concept of Movement with Design & Tech Specialist Ben Chickadel by creating, testing, and redesigning LEGO Technic trolleys to travel along a zipline. They experimented with engineering simple machine components to develop a functional design capable of “zipping down the line.” Throughout this process, they discovered numerous variables affecting speed, balance, and distance, prompting enthusiastic iterations of their designs after each test to observe the impact of their modifications.

Ben reflected on this process saying “As educators, we are fostering innovative design practices by creating environments that encourage exploration and curiosity.

We focus on prompting students with thoughtful questions, guiding them deeper into their inquiries, and celebrating their excitement for discovery.” Students also provided valuable advice and encouragement to their peers, sharing insights from their experiences and building off each other’s designs. These investigations serve as authentic opportunities to cultivate resilience, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

l e v e L y r e v t E e t a e o Exploring M v m n Rube Goldberg Machines with the 3-4s Rube Goldberg Machines brought a delightful twist to learning as our 3-4 students worked together to create a machine where one movement sparked another, creating a chain reaction. Working collaboratively in teams of threes and fours, they set a clear goal, such as knocking over blocks or dropping a ball into a cup, while crafting three or more distinct movement sequences to achieve it. Students began the design process by working together to create a diagram of their machine.

Students brought their creations to life using an assortment of materials, including tape, cups, paper rolls, clothes pins, and math manipulatives.

Upon completion, students presented their process, machine, and alterations to the larger group with a colorful poster. This hands-on project allowed students to practice essential skills from design thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork to public speaking and reflection, all while connecting to the curricular theme in a fun and engaging way. The student groups encouraged the formation of new friendships and dynamics and promoted mentorship and knowledge sharing, making for a truly enriching experience!

Motion in Poetry with the 5s A study in poems + our theme of Movement = Motion in Poetry, a collection of new works by our 5s students that were displayed outside their classrooms. Inspired by their Read Aloud, Becoming Muhammad Ali by Kwame Alexander and James Patterson, students researched lesser-known sports, working over many weeks to craft poems showcasing a moment of their chosen activity. Teachers provided many learning opportunities about poetic devices including rhyming and phrasing, line breaks, personification, perspective, assonance and consonance, onomatopoeia, word play, similes and metaphors, and structure.

Once students completed their initial drafts, they watched Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman’s Masterclass called “Revision, Revision, Revision.” Longtime 5s teacher and Division Head, Sarah Donahue, celebrated how students really dug into Amanda’s advice, especially using her tip to cut 10%, which helped students strip away excess and lift up the hearts of their poems. Then it was on to the exciting part of creating their final pieces by formatting their text, considering the negative space, and adding an artistic silhouette. The final results were striking! Students shared their poems with their classmates with a special Poetry Slam.

CELEBRATING THE NEXT CHAPTER! Martha Schwarz After 33 years of teaching both Early Elementary and Elementary students, beloved Spanish teacher Martha Schwarz retired at the end of the 20232024 school year to embark on a new chapter of her life.

Martha’s impact on our students has been immeasurable. Through her passion and dedication, she has instilled a love of the Spanish language and culture in countless students. Her teaching methods and enthusiasm inspired students to embrace learning a new language, broaden their horizons, and foster a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.

Many of us fondly remember Martha moving from classroom to classroom with her basket full of teaching treasures in her earlier years and then again through COVID, always ready to captivate her students’ imaginations.

One of the most telling signs of Martha’s influence is the number of alums who return each year to express their gratitude and share how she has shaped their lives. Many continue to pursue Spanish, crediting Martha with sparking their lifelong interest. Her legacy is reflected in the success and enthusiasm of these students, who carry forward the lessons they learned in her classroom.

Martha’s presence in our school will be missed, but her contributions will continue to resonate within our halls. We celebrate her extraordinary career and the profound difference she has made in the lives of her students.

Melinda Deal, a cherished member of our teaching community,

stepped back from her full-time role after 33 years. However, she hopes to return in the future to work on special projects or fill in where needed.

Melinda’s impact on our school has been profound. She embodies the essence of collaboration, always working closely with her colleagues to create an enriching and dynamic curriculum. Her dedication and passion for teaching have left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues alike.

Having taught on numerous teaching teams, from Early Elementary to Elementary, Melinda demonstrated incredible versatility and commitment. In the past couple of years, she has also supported the Specialists, allowing her to work with all the students across the school. Over the years, she participated in helping design the UCDS Graduate School of Education with the advisory committee as well as teaching classes in the graduate school. Her ability to connect with students of all ages and inspire a love of learning is truly extraordinary.

While we mark this as a retirement, it is comforting to know that Melinda plans to remain a part of our UCDS family, contributing her talents and expertise in new and meaningful ways. Her presence will be greatly missed, but we look forward to seeing her again in future endeavors.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & BELONGING During the Year of Movement, UCDS embraced new opportunities to deepen our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Together, our community engaged in exciting conversations and projects aimed at fostering even greater belonging for all.

Faculty and staff engaged in energizing professional development, honing skills in active listening and vulnerability through workshops led by Patrick King, our Associate Director of DEIB Educational Programming. Each administrative department set DEIB goals, and with guidance of Dr. Lauryn Mascareñaz, exciting progress was made, especially in improving our onboarding and communication systems. Four faculty members attended the National Association of Independent Schools’ People of Color Conference (PoCC) in St. Louis, returning with fresh insights and inspiration both in curriculum and pedagogical practices.

In the classroom, DEIB came to life through over 330 creative projects based on the Social Justice Standards. Through these standards, students joyfully explored identity, diversity, justice, and action, with activities like identity mapping and studying activist athletes.

With all these vibrant efforts, UCDS is excited to keep moving forward, making our community even more welcoming and inclusive for all.

We expanded our Families of Color Socials, creating more spaces for families to connect in deeper ways, sharing food stories and traditions, and supporting one another. We were also excited to launch our first affinity group for Latine and Hispanic families, with plans to extend this program to other groups, ensuring every family across the school feels a sense of connection.

UCDS INSTITUTE The UCDS Institute hosted several educator visits during the year of Movement, ranging from tours of intentionally designed spaces to collaborative curriculum discussions, continuing its long history of fostering partnerships with schools near and far. Weaving through each hallway, facilitating roundtable discussions, and organizing tailored consultations, the UCDS Institute remained committed to our mission to “engage diverse perspectives in an ongoing effort to shape and share our innovative education model.” This year, we hosted three distinct schools, highlighting teacher voices and connecting educators to collaborate beyond our walls.

Montessori School of Denver, represented by a small cohort of school leadership and teachers, explored the uniquely UCDS design of our Labyrinth and Tower buildings. Pulling inspiration from multipurpose rooms and functional design, we built this visit to align with their upcoming building project in Denver.

Math manipulatives and their use across all grades took center stage alongside peer educators from Hawken School, located outside Cleveland, Ohio.

Our elementary teachers welcomed the visitors into classrooms to showcase Math Vitamin in action and engage in dialogue around how manipulatives serve even our oldest students.

Educators from Riverdale Country School in New York shared similar interests in our Math program. Across a two-day visit, UCDS educators highlighted our early elementary Math Vitamin, illuminating the “Build, Draw, Record” process and tools for curricular design.

Familiar faces from Ascend International School in Mumbai arrived on campus in the spring to observe UCDS in action! The long-standing partnership continues to benefit both schools as we learn and grow in our collaborations.

By consulting with educators beyond our own school, UCDS teachers distill the elements essential to our program and examine how each curricular pillar is relevant in a distinct educational context. These enriching exchanges aid in sharing our educational model across 6,745 miles and provide meaningful growth for our teachers and community here at UCDS.

UCDS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

UCDS Fellowship Program: Improving Practice & Impacting School Culture UCDS’s educational approach emphasizes the teachers’ role as a designer and leader, the child’s uniqueness as a learner, and the critical importance of a shared learning culture in effective schools. The UCDS Graduate School of Education developed out of this practice and culture, which are central to the UCDS mission, and is designed to transform teacher preparation. Its first postsecondary program, the Master of Education program, opened in 2020 and features a collaborative cohort design, practicum-driven learning, and the sustaining professional practice of action research.

In the 2023-24 school year, we launched a two-year Teaching Fellowship opportunity, supporting three Teaching Fellows working in our Early Elementary and Elementary levels.

This program allows graduate students to teach alongside our faculty while pursuing their Master of Education degree, applying the theory of their coursework. UCDS GSE Fellows learn to understand school culture, build their teacher leadership skills, and develop methods to facilitate student success. These educators bring fresh perspectives, knowledge, creativity, and an inquiry mindset to their teaching teams that deepen our conversations about teaching and learning, elevating our own teaching practices. Aligned with the UCDS mission to share our innovative model, the GSE Teaching Fellows will have an amazing impact beyond our walls after building their foundation here at UCDS. DEPARTING TRUSTEE TRIBUTE

Grounded, wise, strategic, analytical, and supremely creative, Katie’s influence can be seen in the many ways UCDS has evolved during her time as a Trustee and leader in our school community. We have benefited from her thoughtful perspective, brilliant organizational mind, and delightful sense of humor. Her expertise and experience were evident whenever she volunteered; from being a Parent Guardian Association officer to being our Auction Co-Chair in 2014-15. Katie joined our Board in 2015, stepped into the Vice Chair role in 2016, and became Board Chair for two years in 2017. Her positive attitude, clarity, and attention to detail resulted in a great leap forward for the school as she helped us launch our Campaign Cabinet and craft our 2020 Strategic Plan. Over your nine years as a Trustee, she has moved the school forward and we are all grateful for her leadership. On behalf of our entire UCDS community, thank you.
