Sale with
& Tradition

Thank you for being a part of our 31st Annual Production Sale! This sale is the culmination of efforts from Horse Barn students, faculty, and staff, and represents the product of our student internship program. This year’s auction features a variety of animals including Quarter Horses, warmbloods, a Paint horse, and mules. These animals are bred for a wide range of disciplines, including cutting, reined cow, ranch riding, western pleasure, hunt-seat, jumping, dressage and more! Additional information on all sale animals and auction details are included in this catalog and on our website.

This year, the Sale Showcase and Open House offers an exclusive in-person preview of all sale animals. The Open House begins at 4:30 PM on Saturday with opportunities to meet the sale animals and their interns, ask questions, and enjoy dinner and refreshments. Attendees can also tour the historic UC Davis Horse Barn and get a sneak-peak at the foals available at the 2025 Production Sale. At 6:00 PM, attendees are invited to watch the Live Sale Showcase where the sale animals will be shown by their production interns in the sale ring. All bidding will take place through Smart Auctions and will open on June 22, 2024 at 5:00 PM. For more information about the online auction process, please visit our website.

This event and the animals offered for sale are a testament to the dedication to handson learning for Horse Barn Production Management Interns. Each year, students collect stallions, prepare breeding doses, track and breed mares, foal out pregnant mares, and train sucklings and yearlings in preparation for this event. We hope you see the passion and effort our students put forth to produce this quality group of sale animals. We are also incredibly thankful for the industry support and donations we receive to make this event possible. Support in the form of donated breedings to industry-leading stallions and donated quality mares to add to our broodmare herd improves the quality of our breeding program each and every year. All proceeds from the Annual Production Sale directly benefit the UC Davis Horse Barn teaching program and future internship opportunities. Thank you for your support of our program!

Sincerely,

Be sure to visit our website and follow us on social media for up to date information!

The Proof is in the Progeny

History of the UC Davis Horse Barn

The Department of Animal Science Horse Barn has been a mainstay of the University of California, Davis since its foundation in the early 1910s. The building itself is now more than 100 years old and serves as a fond reminder of the facility’s beginnings. It is the oldest structure on the UC Davis main campus still used for its original purpose.

The Horse Barn began as a carriage house for draft horses and mules used in agricultural work for the university. It later became a remount station for the US Army, standing several stallions including the Thoroughbred stallion Gunrock, son of Rock Sand and relative to the famed Man O’War. He started as the mascot for the men’s basketball team in 1924 and later became the official mascot for the University. The spirit of Gunrock lives on today with the current UC Davis Mascot.

The Horse Barn also operated as a successful Thoroughbred breeding facility from the 1930s through the 1960s. In the 1940s, the barn brought back draft horses and draft mules to teach agriculture and plowing with true horsepower. In 1963, the Horse Barn stood its first Quarter Horse stallion. The barn is proud to be celebrating more than 60 years of breeding Quarter Horses. It has recently become a promising performance horse breeding operation; producing quality Quarter Horses, mules, Paints, and Warmblood crosses. By diversifying the types of horses bred, raised, and trained at the facility, the UC Davis Horse Barn encourages students to become familiar with a wider array of breeds.

The facility is managed by staff and students year-round, including student residents, interns, student assistant managers and the horse barn manager. The UC Davis Horse Barn is proud to continue the legacy of learning through classes taught at the facility and outreach with the community, including the Annual Horse Day held each Fall. For more information about the UC Davis Horse Barn and to follow our activities year-round, follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ucdhorsebarn.

UC Davis Horse Barn Internship Program

UC Davis Horse Barn Internships operate under the direction of Ms. Kelli Davis, Facility Manager, and Dr. Katy Teixeira, Faculty Advisor

Student Assistant Barn Managers

The Student Assistant Barn Manager assists the Horse Barn Manager with the daily management of an equine facility. This year-long position aims to give students valuable experience managing a horse facility of 30-50 horses. The position also includes managing farrier and vet schedules, maintaining herd health and facility records, overseeing herd care, event preparation, client services, and more.

UC Davis Horse Barn Residents

The Horse Barn Resident Program gives students the opportunity to live at the facility in exchange for work hours. They are responsible for the daily care of the horses including feeding, administering medication and treatments, and completing daily herd health observations and night checks. They work closely with the Barn Manager and Veterinarians to provide top-quality care and are often the facility’s “first-responders” when horses are sick or injured.

Stallion Management Internship

The Stallion Management Internship is geared toward students who wish to become professionally involved in owning or managing a stud farm or broodmare operation. The students gain hands-on experience in mare teasing, stallion and mare hygiene, semen collection and evaluation, and artificial insemination. Their experience also includes palpation, ultrasonography, and pregnancy evaluations.

Mare and Foal Management Internship

The Mare and Foal Management Internship is designed for students interested in owning or managing broodmares, as well as training and caring for foals. Students learn to recognize signs of impending parturition, assist in the foaling process, and tend to the mares and foals following parturition. The Mare and Foal Interns also provide the majority of the training for the foals and assist with registering, marketing, and selling yearling and weanling horses and mules through the annual student-organized auction.

UC Davis Horse Barn Yearlings

Through the Mare and Foal Management Internship, the yearlings sold in the UC Davis Annual Production Sale have been put through extensive groundwork exercises, including lunging in the round pen and on the line. The yearlings are also trained to tie and stand for grooming, farrier work, bathing, and clipping.

The yearlings are trained to load into a trailer, and are exposed to large crowds, many types of large machinery, and other diverse environments. The yearlings participated in the 2024 UC Davis Picnic Day Parade and have been desensitized to the sights and sounds of a parade route.

All animals will receive a Coggins test within 30 days of the sale date. Complete medical records will be available for viewing on sale day at the information desk. A complete copy is also included with the sale packet. We welcome pre-purchase exams (at buyer's expense) by appointment.

For any questions about available sale animals, or to schedule a preview appointment or pre-purchase exam contact the UC Davis Horse Barn Manager;

UC Davis Horse Barn Breeding Services

Additional financial support for our program is provided by standing several stallions as well as offering stallion and mare services to clients. As breeders for over 75 years, we have a strong foundation within the industry. The Horse Barn specializes in stallion breeding services from phantom training to freezing semen.

Our herd stallions are utilized for teaching, contribute to our breeding program, and stand at stud to the public. The Horse Barn offers onfarm and shipped semen breeding options to fit client needs.

Our facility also offers foaling services. Foaling stalls are 12’ x 24’ and are continuously monitored by trained student staff. Veterinarians are on call for each foaling and proximity to the UC Davis veterinary hospital allows for prompt treatment in the event of an emergency.
