Thank you for being a part of our 29th Annual Production Sale! This sale is the culmination of efforts from Horse Barn students, faculty and staff and represent the product of our student internship program. This year’s auction includes a variety of animals including weanlings, yearlings, and a started two-year-old. This year’s breeds include Quarter Horses, Appendix Quarter Horses, a Connemara and Connemara cross, Warmblood cross, Paint Horse and Mule. More information on all sale horses, our program, and the auction details are included in this catalog. Sale videos will be posted on our website for your reference as well. If you are interested in viewing any sale animals prior to June 18th please contact us to schedule a preview appointment. We are pleased to offer opportunities to bid on sale animals both in-person and online so that everyone has a chance to partake in the event. On the day of the auction, bids will be taken in-person and online simultaneously under the direction of our in-person auctioneer. Online bidding will be available through ShoWorks auction services. In-person events include a sale preview from 3:30-5:30PM which will give bidders the opportunity to visit with the sale horses and speak with their student trainers. A barbecue and refreshment garden will be available beginning at 4:30PM and our auction will begin at 6:00PM. For anyone who cannot be present either online or in-person at the time of the auction, ShoWorks offers max-bid options online and we can also arrange for phone-bidding. History of the UC Davis Horse Barn
The Department of Animal Science Horse Barn has been a mainstay of the University of California, Davis since its foundation in the early 1910s. The building itself is now more than 100 years old and serves as a fond reminder of the facility’s beginnings. It is the oldest structure on the UC Davis main campus still used for its original purpose. The Horse Barn began as a carriage house for draft horses and mules used in agricultural work for the university. It later became a remount station for the US Army, standing several stallions including the Thoroughbred stallion Gunrock, son of Rock Sand and relative to the famed Man O’War. He started as the mascot for the men’s basketball team in 1924 and later served as the official mascot for the University.

The Horse Barn also operated as a successful Thoroughbred breeding facility from the 1930s through the 1960s. In the 1940s, the barn brought back the draft horses and draft mules to teach agriculture and plowing with true horsepower. In 1963, the Horse Barn stood its first Quarter Horse stallion. The barn is proud to be celebrating more than 50 years of breeding Quarter Horses. It has recently become a promising performance horse breeding operation; producing quality Quarter Horses, mules, Paints, Aztecas, and Warmblood crosses. By diversifying the types of horses bred, raised, and trained at the facility, the UC Davis Horse Barn encourages students to become familiar with a wider array of breeds. The facility is managed by staff and students year-round, including student residents, interns, and the horse barn manager. The UC Davis Horse Barn is proud to continue the legacy of learning through classes taught at the facility, and outreach with the community, including the Annual Horse Day held each Fall.
UC Davis Horse Barn Internship Program
UC Davis Horse Barn Internships operate under the direction of Ms. Kelli Davis, Facility Manager, and Dr. Amy McLean, Faculty Advisor
Student Assistant Barn Manager
The Student Assistant Barn Manager assists the Horse Barn Manager with the daily management of an equine facility. This year-long position aims to give students valuable experience managing a horse facility of 30-50 horses. The position also includes managing farrier and vet schedules, maintaining herd health and facility records, overseeing herd care, event preparation, client services, and more.
UC Davis Horse Barn Residents
The Horse Barn Resident Program gives students the opportunity to live at the facility in exchange for work hours. They are responsible for the daily care of the horses including feeding, administering medication and treatments, and completing daily herd health observations and night checks. They work closely with the Barn Manager and Veterinarians to provide top-quality care and are often the facility’s “first-responders” when horses are sick or injured.
Mare and Foal Management Internship
The Mare and Foal Management Internship is designed for students interested in owning or managing broodmares, as well as training and caring for foals. Students learn to recognize signs of impending parturition, assist in the foaling process, and tend to the mares and foals following parturition. Students assist with registering, marketing, and selling yearling and weanling horses and mules through the annual student-organized auction.
Stallion Management Internship
The Stallion Management Internship is geared toward students who wish to become professionally involved in owning or managing a stud farm or broodmare operation. The students gain hands-on experience in mare teasing, stallion and mare hygiene, semen collection and evaluation, and artificial insemination. Their experience also includes palpation, ultrasonography, and pregnancy evaluations.

UC Davis Horse Barn Yearlings Through the Mare and Foal Management Internship, the yearlings sold in the UC Davis Annual Production Sale have been trained to tie and stand for grooming, farrier work, bathing, and clipping. They are also put through extensive groundwork exercises, including lunging in the round pen and on the line. The yearlings are trained to load into a trailer, and are exposed to large crowds, many types of large machinery, and diverse environments. The yearlings participated in the 2022 UC Davis Picnic Day Parade and have been desensitized to the sights and sounds of a parade route. Our two-year-olds have been saddled and lunged with a saddle. All animals will receive a Coggins test within 30 days of the sale date. Complete medical records will be available for viewing on sale day at the registration desk. A complete copy is also included with the sale packet. We welcome pre-purchase exams (at buyer's expense) by appointment.

UC Davis Horse Barn Breeding Services Additional financial support for our program is provided by standing several stallions as well as offering stallion and mare services to clients. As breeders for over 75 years, we have a strong foundation within the industry. The Horse Barn specializes in stallion breeding services from phantom training to frozen semen. Our herd stallions are utilized for teaching, contribute to our breeding program, and stand at stud to the public. The Horse Barn offers onfarm and shipped semen breeding options to fit client needs. Our facility also offers foaling services. Foaling stalls are 12’ x 24’ and are continuously monitored by trained student staff. Veterinarians are on call for each foaling and proximity to the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital allows for prompt treatment in the event of an emergency. Performance Record With a successful career in France, BAS BLANC qualified to compete at Fontainebleau as a 4, 5, and 6-year old and received an ISO of 136. He was then sold to Germany as a 9-year-old, where he competed successfully with Helena Weinsburg in International 1.50m classes in CSIA Ascona, CSIA and CSIO, Gijon, CSIA Bremen, and CSIA Dusseldorf. BAS BLANC was sold to the U.S. in February 1999 and competed in CSIA Pinerolo in September of that year. Upon his return to the U.S., he competed lightly. A jumping injury ended his performance career in 2003.

Buyer Guidelines Anyone planning to purchase an animal must abide by the following rules: » Sale managers reserve the right to reopen bidding on any sale animal up until the end of the auction should there be any discrepancies with regard to the highest bidder, online bidding technical issues, or similar. » Following the completion of the auction, all sales are final. » All animals are sold as is. It is the bidder’s responsibility to inspect all animals prior to the sale to fully acknowledge the condition of the animal before bidding. » Following the completion of the auction, purchaser assumes all risks and responsibilities associated with the sale animal. » All animals must be paid for in full prior to pick-up and no later than 72 hours after the auction. Payment can be made via cash, check (made out to UC Regents), or credit card on the day of the sale or via online invoice (credit card payments only). » All sales will be charged additional sales tax. » Any returned checks are subject to additional fees. » All animals must be picked up within 72 hours of the sale. Loading assistance will be provided until 8:30PM on the day of the sale then after by appointment only. Animals remaining at the sale grounds longer than 72 hours are subject to board rates at $25 per day. » All animal loading must wait until the completion of the sale. » A halter and lead rope will be provided with each sale animal. » Any mares sold as bred are not guaranteed in foal. An ultrasound examination confirming pregnancy will be conducted within a week of sale date and all breeding and ultrasound records will be available at the registration desk prior to the sale and in the sale packet.

From Interstate 80:
Take exit 71 toward UC Davis/Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center Turn North on Old Davis Road toward UC Davis Campus. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto La Rue Rd. After the stop sign, turn left to stay on La Rue Rd. Parking Lot 47 will be just past Bioletti Drive on your right.

Take Exit 27 for Hutchinson Road towards UC Davis. Proceed East towards the main campus. Turn Right on La Rue Road and follow around past Dairy and Lacrosse Field. Parking Lot 47 will be on your left.
