Department of Foreign Affairs One third of Irish officials working for the EU Institutions and Agencies are due to retire by 2026.

There are insufficient numbers at junior and mid-level grades to replace them. It is important to participate fully in the European Union and to sustain and increase Ireland’s influence. The Department of Foreign Affairs is committed to helping a new generation of talented Irish graduates apply for and secure permanent posts in the EU. A traineeship (known as a stage) is a great way to gain experience of working life in Brussels and can act as the launch pad to an EU career. Almost all EU Institutions offer paid stages of between 3-5 months for university graduates, with opportunities in law, finance, environmental policy and much more. A trainee’s work is typically extremely varied and rewarding, including everything from preparing policy papers to coordinating visits.
