PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

Dia

My name is Chloe Boland and I am your Societies President for the year 2023/24. Firstly, I want to congratulate you on getting into UCC! This is such an exciting time and I really hope you get to make the most out of your time here. Being in UCC is so much more than your lectures and we are so lucky to have such an active student life with so much on offer. There are so many opportunities to gain new experiences, meet new people and grow as a person.

We have almost 120 societies covering so many different topics and interests. We have everything from Netsoc to Musical, and Science to Macra. No matter what you are interested in, there is a society for you! Societies are for students and by students, and do so much for the UCC Community and our students here. There is so much to be gained from the Society Community. Societies are a chance to meet like minded people and get involved in something you are interested in but it is so much more than this. Societies give students the chance to grow as people, to learn new skills, and to be presented with so many incredible opportunities. Just last October Enactus travelled to Puerto Rico for the Enactus World Cup. Surgeon Noonan has a team of student doctors who work across Africa to support healthcare. The Law Society has held events and presented awards to Sir Bob Geldof and Niall Breslin. This is just a small testament to the amount of incredible things that our societies do!

If you want to learn more about what Societies do be sure to follow us on social media, you can find us on Instagram, TikTok and even BeReal @uccsocieties. Most societies also have their own individual social media accounts so if there are societies that you are interested in be sure to check out their social media as well! If you want to learn more and actually chat to societies be sure to join us for Societies Day in the Hub on September 19th, and Clubs and Socs Day in Western Gateway Building and Brookfield on September 26th.

And if you can’t find something that interests you, don’t worry! You can also set up your own society. We are eager to help grow the UCC Community and ensure everyone has a space they feel they can be themselves and meet similar people!

Societies are an amazing part of the UCC Community and personally were the highlight of my time in college. I am so excited for the year ahead and getting to meet as many of you as possible!

Le grá, Chloe Boland, They / Them, Societies President 2023/24.

UCC ANCIENT HISTORY AND CIVILISATION SOCIETY

NOTES

UCC Ancient History and Civilisation Society

We are a new society founded by individuals interested in mythology and ancient cultures.

We found there was no society that filled that role in UCC and so we decided to change that.

We’re pretty quirky and a wide range of people and ideas. Though our society’s main idea was a reforged Classics Soc that quickly changed as we decided it should be for all cultures and we try for it to be as inclusive as possible.

We plan on hitting the ground running with monthly book clubs on various mythesc books.

We also plan on running a trip up to the Newgrange day centre in the year where if interested we can explore the passage tombs of Newgrange.

UCC ARCHITECTURE SOCIETY

UCC Architecture Society

The Architecture Society is an outlet through which students and staff with an interest in architecture can connect and explore architectural and design related issues in a social setting. Primarily consisting of students of the B.Arch and M.Arch, the society acts as student representatives within the Cork Centre for Architectural Education, as well as being an informal way for students of different years to get to know each other. Our ‘Back to the Drawing Board’ Guest Lecture Series is held throughout the academic year, where we invite architects and people of interest to discuss their view of what architecture is, primarily relating back to topics of local and national importance.

The society is a place where we can take what we learn and apply it to the real world, with particular importance placed on the city of Cork. In recent years we have paid particular attention to the chronic dereliction which is endemic across our city, and finding ways in which we, as future architects, can help resolve this problem. This culminated in our Design Charette, a form of student protest, in which we occupied the School of Architecture building for 24 hours in order to highlight this issue with the local authorities and wider community. We tried to highlight how dereliction is vandalism, for which we were awarded Best Campaign at the 2023 STARS Awards.

As well as this, we organise informal social evenings for all students of architecture to enjoy and to get to know each other, including the annual Architecture Ball held in semester two.

UCC GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS SOCIETY

UCC Government and Politics Society

The UCC Government and Politics Society was founded as a space for students to uplift and foster an interest in politics on a non-partisan basis. We have grown significantly over the past year and have garnered several awards, most notably the Best Cultural Academic & Social Society from a large college at the 2023 Board of Irish College Societies Awards. We aim to continue to build the society by engaging with students through our established annual events, such as the Working For Change Careers Fair, in addition to new exciting events we intend to provide for the year ahead.

UCC LGBTQ SOCIETY

UCC LGBTQ Society

LGBTQ Society is your main stop for all fruity fun at UCC. From Speed-dating, to political activism to socials like movie showings - We have something for everyone!

This year we have some massive plans. Every week we’re hosting a ‘Come out and Chat’ coffee evening with different societies so you can meet every kind of person in UCC. We’re throwing a classic Masquerade Ball, so everyone can have a real college ball experience, and even hosting an authentic queer Ballroom (as seen on Pose). We’re bringing queerness back to campus with all the Pride in the rainbow.

As you know Trans students are not only facing the brunt of a social backlash led by certain media circles, but are left completely to the wolves by a healthcare system that simply does not provide the care needed. We aim to launch a Raise and Give week to create a Trans fund for people to better afford their transition. This will be an entire week of fun charity games, competitions and events like Mario Kart Tournaments or Egg and Spoon Races.

We aim to release our first publication, a collection of Fairy Tales, queer stories of Magic for a younger audience, and would love new writers and readers. Or maybe you’d like to help with our Queer Ed Tiktoks? Anyway you would want to get involved, in something fun or something serious, we would love to have you.

Because the most important letter in LGBTQ... Is U.

UCC SÁMH SOCIETY

UCC SÁMH Society

UCC SÁMH or the Suicide Awareness and Mental Health Society aims to promote positive mental health and wellness across campus and beyond. Mental health in Ireland and across the world is a pervasive and stigmatised issue, further worsened by the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent global economic recession. The primary objective of our society is to not only reduce the stigmatisation of mental illness, but also promote positive attitudes and approaches to mental well-being. To accomplish our goals, we run events such as Tea N’ Chats, an open, non-judgmental forum where we host discussions regarding various topics of mental health; conferences themed around mental health and well-being; board game and wellness activities; arts- and exercise-themed campaigns (Sea Swims at Fountainstown and Garrettstown!); and a concert that helps raise funds towards mental health and homeless communities across Ireland.

Our compassionate and empathic team is always willing to collaborate with other societies within UCC to host events that are fun and help improve the mental wellbeing of students and beyond.

Our society persevered through the post-pandemic transition and remained successful in achieving our goals. Still, as mental illness remains a global epidemic, the need for more kind and caring people to promote positive mental health and wellbeing is now greater than ever. We welcome new and current students this academic school year with literal open arms!

UCC SOCIAL DEMOCRATS SOCIETY

UCC Social Democrats Society

The Social Democrats Society is a home for any UCC student that wants to get involved in fighting for genuine equality with compassion and integrity. We’re one of the newest parties in Ireland, with a young membership and the only party that can say over 50% of our elected reps are women. Despite being new, we’ve been at the forefront of real change, campaigning for Repeal but also creating the Slaintecare healthcare policy, which has received support from all parties.

We’re here to fight for better working conditions for workers, especially student nurses. For an affordable Cost of Living with housing that isn’t covered in mould, and or miles away from college. We fight for our environment and against a Climate Catastrophe, but in ways that ensure middle and low income families aren’t left behind. We’re a party that’s serious about inclusion for everyone, from the rural Irish, to the new Irish we welcome from all corners of the world.

Our party is here to make the world a better place, a more equal, equitable and democratic Ireland. We need you to help bring that to a reality. We are not a society to simply waste your time asking for votes, but to lobby and campaign for change that starts today. That starts with voter registration, door knocking, letter writing, and just plain hanging out!

Is there an issue you want to address? Let us know, and we can start the fight together. Stronger le cheile.

*No party affiliation required.

UCC Surgeon Noonan Society

UCC SURGEON NOONAN SOCIETY

“Surgeon Noonan is a registered charity (CHY10103) run voluntarily by 4th year medical students from UCC. Each year, our goal is to raise over €150,000 all of which goes directly towards underfunded rural hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Each Summer, over forty students travel to hospitals in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Ghana, and Zambia, bringing with them much needed medical supplies and financial aid. These students complete an elective placement with the UCC School of Medicine.

Students cover all travel expenses themselves; ensuring that 100% of funds raised goes towards our beneficiary hospitals. We have a strong accountability policy, which involves monitoring what our beneficiary hospitals intend on spending the funds on, as well as stringent follow-up on what the money is spent on annually.

We run a variety of fundraising events throughout the academic year, including the annual Surgeon Noonan Ball, Grand Raffle, Blood Pressure Clinics, Race Night, Table Quiz as well as Coffee Mornings and weekly Flag Days. This year, we are proud and excited to be introducing several new events which we hope will be a success.

The finance which we provide to these hospitals not only serves as maintenance funding, but also subsidises larger projects. Examples of such developments undertaken with the aid of the Surgeon Noonan Society include the building of new wards, a surgical unit and the introduction of an HIV Outreach Clinic.

As we enter the next academic year, we invite any new medical and non medical students who may wish to contribute to the society to get involved in any way they can.

Every year we also hold a 2-day conference comprising of various speciality talks and workshops where participants learn surgical skills such as radial plating and tendon repair. The objectives of our society are to provide students with the opportunity to explore basic surgical skills, educate students on the various surgical disciplines and provide clear cut information on the different surgical training pathways.

UCC TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY

UCC Traditional Irish Music Society

UCC’s renowned traditional Irish music society, UCC TradSoc, is back for another year of craic agus ceol in 2023/24! The society’s principle aim is for the promotion and celebration of traditional Irish music, song and dance, and it prides itself in being one of the most active TradSocs nationwide. Every week there are loads of opportunities for students of all abilities to play, listen and learn. The hugely popular weekly sessions took place in Mr.Bradley’s every Monday evening last year, and will continue from September 2023 (check out our Facebook and Instagram for confirmation!) Every Wednesday at 1.10pm in An Seomra Caidrimh (ORB) we host our lunchtime concert series where we invite esteemed guest musicians to perform in the venue now synonymous with trad in UCC, with all concerts streamed live on our social media pages. On top of our week-to-week activities is a calendar jam-packed with events which bring the very best talent in trad music to UCC. Highlights include our Harp Day concert, Culture Night, Ceol by Candlelight series, and many collaborative events with An Chuallacht Ghaelach and other socs. This year we are also hoping to continue the tradition of society trips to trad festivals both home and abroad. Like every other year, the society’s work will culminate with UCC TradFest. Society Chairperson Iona Ritchie has a festival bigger and better than ever in the pipeline, featuring concerts, sessions, competitions and more! As always, be sure to sign up with the society and follow our social media (@ucctradsoc) for updates.
