“I literally went from worst to first. My secret: keep the end goal in mind – and make it your priority.”

Eric Broyles (Pre-Law, 1990) grew up in one of the worst neighborhoods in his hometown – and despite scoring well on college entrance exams, graduated at the bottom of his class in high school. He came to UC Blue Ash with a dream of something better.

Working his way through college selling garage doors, he was on the brink of giving up when he got the positive nudge he needed from his English professor. “Professor Phil Luther told me I was a good writer and encouraged me to develop that skill. I started with that goal in mind and continued from there.”

Eric earned his associate degree at UC Blue Ash and went on to graduate at the top of his class at UC’s Clifton campus. He then finished near the top of his class at the University of Virginia Law School.

A successful lawyer and business leader, Mr. Broyles credits UC Blue Ash with giving him the academic skills and confidence he needed to succeed. He is currently the CEO of the international investment research firm, ExpertConnect, based in Washington, D.C.

teaching English professor Dr. Rita Kumar is an expert in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which she’s been honing in her classroom for more than ten years.

“This engaging way of teaching takes the focus off the instructor in the classroom, and empowers students in the learning process who use course concepts to solve problems as they’re presented.”

Dr. Kumar has led training with faculty to help implement this teaching approach across disciplines, and has published information on the topic in a variety of publications, including College Teaching.

BRING THE PAST TO LIFE Fulbright Scholar and History professor, Timothy Forest, spent nine months living in France conducting research in French archives that will be the basis for a new book on immigration studies and new courses in the college’s European History program.

“I really enjoy gaining a new perspective for my research and my teaching,” he said. “I find that it’s one thing to read about history and culture, it’s another to see it firsthand.”

History professor Dr. John McNay inspires his students through his actions. He is a published author and respected leader in the field of labor relations, has represented the college on the UC Faculty Senate, and has created and led numerous study abroad programs.

His recent book, Collective Bargaining and the Battle of Ohio, details Ohio’s fight to overturn Senate Bill 5 through grassroots organizations.

I’m making it

Nadia Ali (Nursing, ‘14) knew earning her nursing degree would be tough, but she had no idea just how it would change her life.

In the midst of balancing her class work, clinical rotations and her job as clinical data specialist in the Blood Cancer Center at Jewish Hospital, Nadia felt something was wrong. A lump in her neck was diagnosed as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and suddenly, she became the patient instead of the healer.

“I was scared, but felt fortunate to have the people who took care of me.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON A NATIONAL SCALE Nadia is co-president of Ohio’s chapter of CPAN, a cancer patient advocacy network that works to protect the viability of cancer care on a national level.

Nadia endured six weeks of weekly radiation treatments, losing some of her hair and her voice – but stayed on track to complete her degree. Her cancer is now in remission, and she’s looking forward to using her nursing degree in the oncology field, helping others navigate the physical and emotional struggles of this deadly disease.

“I’m not only a health care provider, but I’ve been on the other end. I know the pain, the fatigue, the nausea – I get it. It’s what will make me a better nurse.”

“Who knew traveling 4,000 miles away would bring me closer to my future?”

Chris Strohofer (IT) had never traveled outside the country – and self-admittedly gets lost trying to navigate his own hometown. But that didn’t stop him from spreading his wings.

On the 2014 British Study Abroad experience, Chris spent three weeks studying media and literature in Great Britain and France – immersing himself in a culture thousands of years old.

“When I met the professors leading the study abroad session, I knew I wanted to learn from these professors. They were passionate about their teaching; it was contagious!”

“This trip helped me to redefine the path my life was on. I learned so much about myself, and gained friends that share similar passions.”

APPLYING TO UC BLUE ASH

STEP 1: APPLY

UCBA is an open admission institution, providing access to higher education to anyone with a high school diploma or the equivalent. The college’s open admission policy allows students to enter any academic semester: fall, spring or summer.

Submit Application for Admission at https://apply.uc.edu/OnlineApply and pay $50 application fee.

Have official high school transcript (or copy of GED diploma) and any previous college transcripts sent to: University of Cincinnati, Office of Admissions, PO Box 210091, Cincinnati, OH 45221-0091.

Submit your application

Students who were home-schooled follow the same application process as all other applicants. To be considered, home-schooled students must submit with their application materials: a transcript, showing course grades; a detailed curriculum, including course content descriptions; ACT or SAT scores; a copy of the superintendent release form authorizing homeschooling; and any other requested documentation.

SCHEDULE A CAMPUS VISIT

Campus visits are by appointment only and can be scheduled by completing an online reservation form at www.ucblueash.edu/visit or by calling (513) 745-5700.

All Campus visits are in a group setting and include an information session as well as a campus tour. The information session will brief you on major/program offerings, application process, resources available, student life opportunities and the financial aid process.

Campus visits are offered three days a week for your convenience.

We offer sessions on Monday 2-3 p.m., Wednesday 5-6 p.m., and Friday 10-11 a.m.

Complete a FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov UC FAFSA code is 003125.

Allow 4-6 weeks for processing.

Once you receive your Student Aid Report (SAR), review for corrections. If none are needed, keep in a file for future use.

Once you have been admitted and you receive your SAR, check www.onestop.uc.edu for your aid status.

Once your aid has been accepted, complete loan counseling, and sign promissory notes online by visiting www.onestop.uc.edu.

These programs provide the first two years toward completion of the corresponding bachelor’s degree at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH).** Students must be admitted into the CECH cohort through a selective admissions process for completion of the bachelor’s degree and teacher licensure.

These one-year programs (non-degree) provide the first year of the baccalaureate program at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). Students completing the first year must apply to and be accepted into the program at CECH.
