ENTREPRENEURIAL FELLOWS PROGRAM: BOLSTERING STARTUP EXPERIENCES AND ACCELERATING INNOVATION
The Entrepreneurial Fellows Program was envisioned by M.E.T. Advisory Board member, Ted Kuh, who conceived of the idea which allows for M.E.T. students to work directly with founders early in their academic careers. Ted was joined by EFP donors Kamal Duggirala, Mark Edelstone, Jon Goldstein, James Lau and Michael Grimes who have collectively sponsored countless EFP students in this donor funded program.
In 2023, Jas Khaira became an M.E.T Advisory Board member, establishing the Khaira EFP Fellows, our first EFP endowment, sponsoring multiple students per year in perpetuity.

“This project taught me how to communicate engineering concepts with non-engineers, including AirMyne’s commercial team and sales representatives at vendors. This type of communication is essential to bridge the gap between engineering & business, a large part of what M.E.T. students are taught to do. Working on a true civil engineering project with support from a small startup team is an extraordinarily rare opportunity, and I made close connections with my team and their contacts in the civil engineering industry. This network will supercharge my access to opportunities over the next few years, and it would not have happened without EFP.”
“During my 10-week internship, I joined the research team to enhance the quality of our online assessments. My main project involved improving our speech analysis pipeline for patients with ALS. By integrating OpenAI’s Whisper model and new speech analysis methods, I was excited to contribute towards making our assessments more accurate and efficient for our patients who needed them most. This experience has been both professionally and personally meaningful. Diving into patients’ health conditions to explore their symptoms and manifestations, then developing ways to apply technology to address their needs deepened my curiosity for the field. It was incredibly rewarding to see how technology, when thoughtfully applied, can have a tangible impact on people’s lives. I am now working on a research paper with my mentors to share our findings, and I hope this is just the beginning of my journey in health tech research.”

Startup: Runbear
““I worked at Runbear, a startup that builds AI agents for businesses within their existing communication platforms such as Teams and Slack. One of my favorite projects was researching prospective customer personas, developing personalized landing pages for them, and marketing them on various platforms like LinkedIn and Medium. Getting 1000+ impressions on my LinkedIn posts and converting a percentage of our audience into full-time users was super rewarding! This project not only gave me exposure to the entire business lifecycle process but also reminded me about how important creativity and self-confidence are in the startup world.”
PARTICIPATING COMPANIES
Startup Requirements
• Currently affiliated with a UC Berkeley or M.E.T. -approved startup accelerator or fund.
• Be Pre-Seed, Seed, or Series A funded with 3–30 employees.
• Cannot be a current undergraduate student-founded startup from any college or university.
• Maximum of (2) M.E.T. student interns at each affiliated startup.
ACCELERATORS
Our Accelerator Partners are instrumental in helping students obtain internships. Our team puts a call out to accelerators in mid-January annually and we host a start-up career fair each April for our students and startups to network.
Berkeley SkyDeck is UC Berkeley’s premier startup accelerator and incubator program. They support startups founded by UC Berkeley students, alumni, and faculty who are seeking to bring their scientific and technical discoveries to market and commercialize groundbreaking UC Berkeley research.
TechStars is a mentorshipdriven accelerator, investing $120K and providing hands-on mentorship and access to the startups in the TechStars network. YCombinator provides a small amount of seed funding for startups and works with them to flesh out ideas and help founders partner with investors and acquirers.
