PROJECT 1: MATERIAL INTERACTION

Project Description This project looks at the intersection of two materials through the lens of immigration. It asks how this material collision creates new environments for inhabition. By opening our minds, we can find unexpected notions and insights of what it means to immigrate.

Each board explores and documents how the collision between the two materials exposes this new environment. The abstraction of the materials and their behaviours reveals certain ideas and expressions of immigration. These expressions can then be documented to form a common understanding in the meanings of immigration.

Project Description

Integration vessels explores the meaning of landscape and its connection to the experience of newcomers. By creating a temporary refuge in the prairie, the project asks how a vessel can be used to integrate both culture and landscape, to aid newcomers to settle and find a new sense of place in Canadian society, and how a regional response in material and form can enrich both the connection between visitors and the architectural experience in the prairies.

PROJECT 2: VESSELS

This project creates a vessel that can accommodate up to 12 people. A shared bathroom and common space help to encourage connection and shared understanding among visitors. As a regional material, wood allows for new discoveries in creating an environment that fosters connection to the land and between people.

thus, ‘formation’ is an integrated vessel housing which is located on the outskirts of Calgary, Alberta. primarily utilized by immigrants and refugees, they are to stay at this site for as long as they desire or however long it takes for them to adapt to their new surroundings. with the individual vessels, each are equipped with a adaptable bed and storage areas; which is customizable depending on the users’ needs. as ‘food’ is recognized internationally as a ‘source of integration’ the communal kitchen therefore, provides the individuals an opportunity to form a ‘community’ regardless of any language or cultural barriers.

aspiration for stability & settlement through a very stil landscape but the stilness can get taken by a larger force, the chinook and winds coming from the mountains.

This integration vessel, located on the outskirts of Calgary, is used for immigrants and refugees to stay for a day, a week, or longer as the acclimatized to their new surroundings. The structure provides accommodations for 12 people focused on a central organization around food preparation. Food is recognized internationally as a source of integration and brings people together regardless of cultural or language barriers.

The organization provides varying degrees of privacy and lines of sight depending upon the user’s desires. To further reflect integration the structure is focused on the Canadian Prairies by reflecting the iconic local hay bale and through material selection.

Individuals may enjoy an architectural experience embedded in Canada’s expansive prairie landscape. The habitat is carefully perched along the undulating rural hills.

This alludes to the sensitive balance of security and thoughtful integration that is required among many newcomers. Adaptable interior space enables both privacy and public engagement, with moving walls that affect circulation throughout. These concepts are embedded within a rich wood materiality and detailing.

Stemming from the preceding material collision, which brought together wax and snow and necessitated the construction of a new wooden home to catch the tumbling and melting pieces, the Woodshed furthered many themes including snow, wood, and unpredictability. Combining these with in depth discussions regarding the experiences of newcomers to Canada and research into the nature and potential of wood as a building material, new trajectories emerged including the imperative to overcome a sense of isolation caused by physical and psychological barriers and the development of a novel mass timber system that could be described as site-built, snow-formed plywood. The Woodshed subverts the notion of walls being barriers between people by recasting the wall as a framework for togetherness. The simple construction assembly is designed for additive assembly over many seasons and lends itself to unskilled participation, allowing the community to come together around place and memory making.

CONCEPT: The Home of Empowerment challenges the traditional, often sexualized view of females in the landscape and provides a place where women can experience the landscape while controlling the level and context of which they are viewed back. By using rotatable wooden

This mapping project works towards the studio’s final project of creating an addition to the Margaret Chisholm Centre in Bridgeland.

The Margaret Chisholm Centre is run by the Calgary Catholic Immigrant Society (CCIS) to provide a temporary, initial, accommodation for government sponsored refugees. While living at the Centre, residents are provided with services to initiate them into life in Canada. Coming to Canada as a refugee is a traumatic upheaval of a previous life and this project provides a site analysis for the Margaret Chisholm Centre and the neighbourhood of Bridgeland through three lenses: public, private, and legislative.

Each map explores one of five aspects: environmental conditions and characteristics; the spatial structure; the historic evolution; visual character.

PROJECT 4: URBAN RESETTLEMENTS

Project Description

Urban Resettlements explores the boundaries of privacy; asking what thresholds exist or can be created that allow us to cross these boundaries as productive entities. This project is sited adjacent to the Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre, which provides temporary accommodation to newcomers in Calgary.

Using the social mandate of the Centre as inspiration, this project proposes alternative modes of housing that provides connection between residents and into the wider community.

Programatically, a housing project is created that provides for 35-40 residents. To form a broader connection between the project and the city, a social enterprise is provided to connect with the mission of the Margaret Chisholm Centre. This enterprise is an entity that contributes to the improvement of the financial, social, or environmental well-being of the community. In continuation of the exploration of regionality in Integration Vessels, Urban Resettlements makes use of wood as a regional product for the primary material of the project.

A Building that Builds brings together local sustainable building materials with advanced fabrication in an urban setting to generate a flexible and welcoming home environment for newcomers to Canada. Exploring themes of connectivity and adaptability this project challenges the status quo car culture of modern cities and provides an alternative to normative housing markets by generating an indeterminate network of organic pedestrian walkways and empowering diverse tenants with the tools and framework to shape their own home. It pushes a simple housing project passed the boundaries of the traditional architectural discipline both down to the scale of product manufacturing and up to the scale of urban infrastructure in recognition that all scales are human scale.

The parametric facade adapts to the internal and external environments by producing 1 varying types of light and visual penetration. An adaptable, co-living experience. Each individual is offered a mobile unit of privacy containing a quiet workspace and bed. Diversity and movement of dwellings offer a constantly evolving choice in private lifestyle and connectivity. The remainder of the building consists of shared living, dining and kitchen areas. The communal experience of food and living space prompts relation. Collaboration is sought both at the building and neighborhood scales. The structure parallels the Margaret Chisholm Resettlement center for government sponsored refugees. Sharing the process of cooking and dining is an imperative means to transcend difference and cultivate mutual appreciation. This sharing may be extended to the broader context through an indoor-outdoor community kitchen and restaurant. This social enterprise offers short and long-term employment for residents and newcomers at Margaret Chisholm. An adaptable rotating menu enables everyone to share their unique culinary style with Bridgeland and Calgary.

This design investigates variable permeability in movement and light. A gradient of privacy is created with a variety of retreats and semi-private dwelling plateaus. Connection is additionally encouraged through movement through a central organic staircase. The building seeks to maintain a sensitive balance between engagement and security. A north to south elongation creates a sense of safety with an introverted courtyard alongside the Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre. It also, however, creates a powerful experience of light and shadow that evolves throughout the day. A south curtain wall and central open column offer supplementary ambient light to compensate for a less permeable facade design. A delicate and controlled wood elevation transitions into a burst of social life at the heart of the building. The various applications of wood, from heavy timber structural grid, to flowing organic movement, combine to create a harmonious balance of form.

A ground level market space allows pop-up vendors to sell and promote various products. Five indoor spaces are available for rent in the winter.

In the summer four additional outdoor spots are available on the lot just northwest of the site, providing a small outdoor market for the community. A small outdoor plaza extends the indoor market spaces and provides further areas of interaction between community members. This social enterprise sits along the border and important INTERSECTION between the surrounding residential area, Bridgeland, and commercial/public spaces bridging to downtown. By activating the alleyway and bringing members of the community, as well as residents above together, this social enterprise can strengthen the importance of this threshold.

Thresholds are considered through visibility, sound, sun path, and direction/ recognition of space. The variation of these thresholds will allow different levels and layers of INTERACTION through the architecture.

Spaces are also activated based on these layers of interaction.

Residential private units face north to the surrounding residential area.

Residential communal spaces face south for natural sunlight and to break some of the noise coming from Memorial. Addition and subtraction of spaces to the overall form provides further levels of integration with the surrounding site.

CLT modular components make up the private resident spaces.

Glulam components structure the transparent, communal spaces on each residential floor.

The threshold wall provides varying levels of interaction. Whether residents want to be seen, heard or interact with others is controlled over adaptation of this component. Refugess who are not ready to fully interact with others may take control of their integration through this wall. Over time, this exposed wood threshold will change with residents coming and going and changing this space.

Co-housing: a collective of people who seek to build intentional community; to create deep connections between its members; to become a family.

It is the collective that defines what is important for the group; that decides what needs to be built.

The Co-House is a framework to enable the collective: to bond; to build. It is for the collective to define and create those spaces that foster the community.

For the collective, just like a family, there is a need for retreat from the whole. In the Co-house the framework allows for individual suites to provide for separation between the individual and the whole.

P4 | A BUILDING THAT BUILDS

A Building that Builds brings together local sustainable building materials with advanced fabrication in an urban setting to generate a flexible and welcoming home environment for newcomers to Canada. Exploring themes of connectivity and adaptability this project challenges the status quo car culture of modern cities and provides an alternative to normative housing markets by generating an indeterminate network of organic pedestrian walkways and empowering diverse tenants with the tools and framework to shape their own home. It pushes a simple housing project passed the boundaries of the traditional architectural discipline both down to the scale of product manufacturing and up to the scale of urban infrastructure in recognition that all scales are human scale.

CONCEPT: Receiving help is a stigmatized action that requires the admittance of weakness. people tend to avoid it due to fear of judgment. This project creates a place for women to seek help whether through temporary housing, or social services that are vertically integrated.
