QCEF Sends Every First Grader Home with a Book

Each Quakertown Community School District first grader went home for the summer with a new book. The gift is compliments of the Quakertown Community Education Foundation.

“First grade is such a crucial year for students in the development of their reading skills,” said Erin Oleksa-Carter, the district’s supervisor of literacy and arts. “We believe this will help them continue to grow as readers, and develop their love of reading.”

Approximately 365 books were given out, and the one each child received was determined by their teacher, based on the interest they’ve shown in a certain topic and their reading ability.

“Teachers have taken an active role in the program, Oleksa-Carter said, developing reading celebration days. “They made sure the kids got the right books in their hands for the summer.”

The total cost for the books is close to $3,000. Three primary donors -- Levy School Bus Company, Quakertown Rotary Club and Realtor Sue Deily -- each held fundraisers specifically for this program.

QCEF vice president Christopher Betz, publisher of the Upper Bucks Free Press, Warren Levy Jr., owner of the Levy School Bus Company, and former Magisterial District Justice Bob Roth each visited classrooms as books were handed out.

“It’s a beautiful sight,” Mr. Levy said.

“The children couldn’t be more excited. It was great to interact with these first graders.

This is a great time to give these books to the kids to encourage reading now and through the summer.”

Mr. Betz, who visited Trumbauersville’s three first-grade classes Wednesday with Mr.

Levy, said “It was my pleasure to represent QCEF and the donors that support us while personally distributing these books to the first graders. The kids were thankful and excited to

get these gifts, which was great to see. Some even started reading their books right away.”

The concept began a year ago, and was proposed by QCEF’s Robert Leight, a former school director, who described first grade as the “entry into literacy.” QCEF President Bill Tuszynski said the idea began with “providing books to students who couldn’t afford them.

But it’s difficult to identify those students, and there could be a stigma attached to it. So the board decided to do it for all of them.”

Living on Licking Run [I’m local. I say: THE Licking Run (and Bethlem, and Lankister), but skipped that here.]

I’ve lived on Licking Run Creek in Quakertown for most of my life. I grew up along its bank in the 50’s and 60’s, and then relocated there again after a hiatus of a decade and a half while attending university then residing in Wyoming. Over the past half century, plus, I’ve seen the ancient stream experience drastic change, as has the borough and township it bisects.

Licking Run arises in marshy land in northwestern Richland Township, between California Road and Route 309. Several rivulets merge to form the main stream. It’s barely a rill as it flows south across West Pumping Station Rd., then Kelly Drive, Sunshine Drive, and Golden Gate Drive (the latter three built only during my children’s lifetimes). The creek then enters a large culvert and passes under the parking lot behind the Plaza shopping center and under West Mill Street. There, it becomes a ‘real creek’ again, flowing east across North Main St. at the Chamber of Commerce/ Historical Society museum.

Licking Run traverses the length of Quakertown about a block north of Broad St. It forms a boundary and is a centerpiece of Memorial Park. There are bridges across the stream at Ninth and Fourth Streets with a foot bridge in the park. There is an enclosed industrial walkway between 4th St. and the railroad bridge. There are vehicle bridges at Hellertown Ave. and N. Ambler St., with a private foot bridge between Ambler and the public foot bridge at N. Penrose. Licking Run then turns south and crosses Erie Road, where the old ‘Rocking Horse Bridge’ was replaced in recent memory. The creek then forms the boundary between the borough and Richland Township as it passes behind houses along Elm and East Broad Streets.

Wikipedia claims that Licking Run joins Beaver Run a few yards past the latter’s crossing of E. Broad near Franklin St. However, most locals know that Beaver actually joins Licking Run. The combined stream continues eastward, crosses Nick Luca Drive at the sewer plant then joins the Tohickon Creek at its 23.10 mile mark, about a quarter mile east of the borough line.

Licking Run is mentioned in the earliest records of the Upper Bucks Great Swamp. It was named for a deer lick somewhere along its banks. That salt deposit was mined to extinction in the earliest days of settlement, its location long lost to memory. Licking and Beaver Runs, Morgan Creek and Richlandtown Creek are the most significant tributaries in the Upper Tohickon Valley watershed.

When I was a kid Licking Run was a continuously flowing stream, not intermittently dry as it now is. Cement dams spanned it at various locations through the borough forming deeper water sections, particularly at Memorial Park.

At my place, the creek was narrower and shallow, its bed clogged by mud and gravel bars and often over grown with grass and reeds.

My earliest memories of Licking Run include nightmarish images of sewer rats scurrying about, darting into holes that speckled the muddy banks. I remember oily, colored

water that flowed by after a spill or dump at an upstream industry, and the tires, paint cans and other junk that lay embedded in the stream bed. I still can feel and smell the thick black mud, saturated with chemicals and rotting muck that I’d sink into over shoes. The doctors believed my contact with it was responsible for the allergy-like attacks that put me in the hospital twice, as a child.

Despite those horrid conditions, before the Clean Water Act (1972), Licking Run teemed with life: frogs, minnows, snappers and stinkpot turtles, crayfish and mussels, catfish, sunnies and eels. With poles and nets, or sometimes by hand, we’d wade the creek, catching things. We cringed at the sight of huge leeches and splashed to shore before they could attach themselves to us.

In the 1960’s, the borough cleaned out the creek. From the Penrose St. footbridge we watched bulldozers plowing and scooping muck and debris from the channel killing everything in the path. Scores of catfish, some over a foot long, slowly swam down stream in the muddy water, gasping for air with clogged gills. We tried to rescue some, but overnight they died in the buckets we put them in.

The borough removed most of the dams and widened Licking Run into, basically, an efficient drainage ditch, eliminating its charm as a lazy, recreational stream. That alteration, and the development of West End Boulevard into a shopping district, caused a dramatic change in Licking Run’s behavior. Previously, a heavy rain would slowly percolate through marsh and grassland. The creek would rise moderately and stay high for several days. Now, the water rushes off asphalt and other impermeable surfaces and roars downstream in a raging torrent.

The creek goes very high then, often within hours, is back to its previous flow.

Through the 80’s and 90’s Licking Run through Quakertown continued to support ducks and other wildlife. Eels and spawning suckers were seen along its length. Snapping turtles scared kids in the park. Schools of minnows swarmed. Sunfish nested and bred.

Frogs croaked. But, as development continued, storm surge runoff scoured the channel and its ‘normal’ flow was often only a trickle.

After the turn of the century, the creek started to dry up in summers.

Now, Licking Run is almost devoid of life.

It’s usually too shallow for suckers or carp to spawn. Frogs are rare. There’s no longer a chorus on warm evenings. When the creek is dry for weeks, crayfish, burrow into the mud and eventually shriveled and die. Many times I searched the last puddles, netted out stranded minnows and took them to the Tohickon, where I hoped they’d survive.

I’m saddened, some. But, I realize that all I’m seeing is the progression of our four hundred year effort to conquer the New World.

On Licking Run, I’m seeing the results of our successful battle to tame the inhospitable Great Swamp. I’m not afraid for the future, though.

I know the rain will continue to fall and the creek will continue to flow--through this century and the next, and the next, long beyond the lives and civilizations of Man. Licking Run’s flowing water will continue to follow its eternal path to the sea.

Medicare will start the first day of your Birthday month.

TURNING 65… still working and covered by employer insurance Do nothing until you get ready to retire.

You must enroll in Medicare Parts ‘A’ & ‘B’ starting 60-90 days from the month that you need Medicare to start. Medicare will start the 1st day of the month that your employer coverage ends. There will be no penalties once you do enroll at whatever age. Steward Joseph Leister, III, age 69, died Friday, May 17, 2019 at his home in Sellersville, PA. Born April 9, 1950, he was the son of the late Steward Joseph, Jr. and Elizabeth Pershing (Rice) Leister in Vineland NJ, and the beloved husband of Barbara Mainhart, to whom he was married for 36 years.

Steward held a BSEE degree in electronic engineering from Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ and an Associate’s degree from Cumberland County College, Vineland, NJ. He was self-employed and specialized in digital signal processing and computer applications. His work took him to many locations including Antwerp, Belgium where he learned French and traveled to many European countries.

Stew was a member of the Tyrean Chapter of DeMolay in his hometown of Vineland, NJ during high school. He belonged to the IEEE and NSPE professional engineering organizations. Because of his lifelong interest in history and genealogy, he enjoyed being a member of the West Rockhill Historical Society. He discovered that his fourth-great-grandfather had lived on the same property in the 1800’s that Steward and his wife bought in West Rockhill Township 1993. Through his mother’s family, he was a recorded member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

He enjoyed being outdoors as much as possible, kept an extensive vegetable and fruit garden and was also a beekeeper. He also participated in competitive fencing and target practice.

In addition to his wife, Steward is survived by a sister, Patricia Leister-Ricci and her husband Mark from Naples, FL, cousins Dennis Link, of Phoenix, AZ and Eva Marie Saint, of Los Angeles, California and brothers-in-law Larry Mainhart and Robert Mainhart and his wife Mary of Butler, PA. In addition to his parents, Steward is preceded in death by sister Nancy Elizabeth Leister.

Nancy Ruth (Hosler) Dillingham, age 85, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at Briarleaf Nursing and Convalescent Center, Doylestown.

Born February 8, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Alverda (Klingerman) Hosler, and the widow of the late Ralph Dillingham.

Nancy was a doting mother to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nancy is survived by: daughters Elizabeth Heath (husband Ernest), and Deborah Collier (husband Joseph); son Richard Simmers; grandchildren Krista Steffy, Jessica Bergey, Jennifer Mongold, and Daniel Collier; great-grandchildren Jacoby Bergey, Justis Bergey, Jenessa Bergey, and Lillian Mongold; and sisters Joan Everitt, Betty Shasten, and Emma Searfoss. Floy W. Ulmer, 102, of Quakertown died May 25, 2019 in her home. She was the wife of the late Henry Frederick Ulmer.

Born in West Beaver Twsp., Pa she was the daughter of the late James Allen & Susanna Emmeline (Narehood) Wieand.

She was a garment worker for various clothing factories in the Upper Bucks Area before retiring.

Floy was a member of the Shelly Fire Company Auxiliary and a avid gardener and cook.

She was Rosie the Riveter in Hatboro during WW II. She was a member of the former St. John’s Lutheran Church in Quakertown.

Survived by a son Dennis F. (Susan), two daughters Phyllis Rupell, and Karen Rosenberger (Alan D.), 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Gale Ruppell and a daughter Faye Ann Ulmer, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Marie P. Gleockler, 88, of Allentown formerly of Quakertown died May 27, 2019 in Cedarbrook Senior Care, Allentown. She was the wife of the late Grover Gleockler.

Prior to retirement she worked as a Nurses Aide in Hollywood, Florida, and in housekeeping at the Bush House. She also worked for Imrod.

Florence V. Cummings, 89, of Quakertown died May 28, 2019 in Phoebe Richland Health Care Center. She was the wife of Larry Cummings. They were married 45 years last July.

Before retiring she worked in the housekeeping department at Quakertown Manor and was an assistant at a child daycare.

Leister, to whom she was married 58 years at the time of his passing in 2006.

Kathryn was an active member of the Quakertown First United Church of Christ, where she was part of the quilters group. She also volunteered for the Quakertown Meals on Wheels program for many years. Kathryn graduated from Quakertown High School in 1942 and worked as a secretary at Eagle Shirt Co. and Quakertown Ford. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family, sharing her crafting skills and teaching them her signature recipes.

Kathryn is survived by: sons Jere Leister and Thomas Leister (wife Debra); daughter Janet Bradshaw (husband Bruce); grandchildren Douglas (Daphne), Jennifer, Leah (Aaron), and Rachel (David); and great-grandchildren Ainsley and Meredith. Vito Palladino, Jr., of Quakertown, formerly of Kutztown, died Friday May 31 in Phoebe Richland Health Care Center. He was the loving husband of Alice F. (Sell) Palladino. Born Dec. 24, 1933, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late William Henry and Marion (Fulton) Davis, and the widower of the late Mary Beth (Morrison) Davis.

Milton was a graduate of South Hills High School in Pittsburgh. He went on to join the US Air Force where he served his country honorably during the Korean War. Afterward, he worked for over 25 years in Human Resources at the former Pittsburgh Press newspaper while he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, attending night classes at the University of Pittsburgh. As well, he was a member of the Antique Automobile Association of America where one of his great joys was driving and showing off his mint 1966 Buick Riviera.

Milton is dearly missed by daughters Daria Lee Chase (husband Russ Blakely) and Kimberly Ann Campbell (husband James), grandchildren Andrew and Nicholas Campbell, and his dear friend Barbara Nodine. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Noel Rainier Davis.

Harold M. “Wheats” Heavener, age 88, died Friday, June 7, 2019, at Meadow Glen at Phoebe Richland Health Care Center, Richlandtown.

Born Jan. 16, 1931 in Richlandtown, he was the son of the late Willard Fox and Susan (Klimeck) Heavener.

Harold served his country with honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition, he was a member of many baseball organizations, including his high school team, Richlandtown Baseball, Legion Baseball, the St. John’s Lutheran church league, and 21 years in TriCounty Baseball. Most of all, he was a loving father and grandfather, and will be missed dearly.

Harold is survived by: daughters Elaine Ely (husband Ronald), and Linda Fry (husband Richard); sister June Gruver; and beloved grandchildren Ryan, Jared, Caitlyn, and Wyatt. In addition to his parents, Harold is preceded in death by brothers Robert and Ira Heavener.

Mark Lowell Mindler, 97, passed away June 9, 2019 in Bethlehem, PA. Born April 5, 1922 in Passer, PA, he was the son of Jacob and Martha (Hottel) Mindler. He was a graduate of Springfield High School in Pleasant Valley, PA. Mark was an active baseball player as a young man. He served in Belgium as a sergeant in World War II and sometimes acted as a German translator during his service. An employee of Bethlehem Steel for 42 years, he retired in 1984. During these years, he traveled widely throughout the world. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church for more than 50 years.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Barbara Mindler (Mischisen), grandson Thomas Peter Sprague, four brothers (Albert, Paul, Robert, James) a sister, Ruth, four sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law. He is survived by a son, Thomas Peter Mindler and his wife Ann (Sloyer), and by a daughter, Ann Mindler Sprague, grandchildren Melissa Ackerman (John), Philinda Mindler (Bill Bretzger), Mark Sprague (Lori), Jessica Maisuria (Pintu), Alison Frame (Craig), Eric Sprague, Alexandra Mindler, Joshua Mindler, and seven great-grandchildren, as well as one sister-inlaw, and twelve nieces and nephews.

Debra L. Young, 63, of Quakertown died June 13, 2019 in St. Luke’s University Hospital, Bethlehem. She was the wife of Fred W. Young. They were married 43 years in March.

Born in Quakertown she was the daughter of the late Richard & Evelyn (Griffo) Stoneback.

In addition to being a homemaker, mother, and grandmother she was also a child care provider.

Debra, her husband, and children did music ministries at numerous churches performing as the Young Band.

She attended LCBC in Harleysville.

Steven F. Hillias, 49, of Upper Saucon Twp. died Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, Salisbury Twp. He is the husband of Tracy A. (Childs) Hillias.

He was born in Allentown, PA on December 19, 1969 to Irene M. (King) Hillias of Upper Saucon Twp. and the late Jack C. Hillias. Steven is a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School, received his undergraduate degree in Management from Penn State University in 1991; attended the FBI National Academy in 2007. In 2010, he received his master’s degree in criminal justice from DeSales University.

He has been a member of the Perkasie Police Department since 1997. In December 2014, Steven was promoted to Perkasie Chief of Police. He is a member of the Police Chiefs Association of Bucks County and the Fraternal Order of Police. Steven and his family were part of the Calvary Bible Fellowship family in Coopersburg. He was a master craftsman in woodworking, loved to ski and golf. Steven enjoyed aviation with his son and visiting amusement parks with his daughter and most of all spending time with his wife and family.

Willard R. Kramer, Sr., 87 of Sellersville died June 20, 2019 in Doylestown Hospital. He was the husband of Grace (Hicks) Kramer. They were married 61 years in July.

Born in Milford Twsp., Bucks County he was the son of the late Harry C. & Florence M. (Mindler) Kramer.

He was last employed for Solar Atmospheres in Souderton. Prior to that he worked at the former American Olean Tile in Quakertown and for the former Philco Ford in Lansdale.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #255 in Sellersville, and also a member of the Great Swamp Fish & Game. He was also a member of the former Quakertown Moose Lodge. Willard enjoyed gardening.

He was very involved with his family whom he loved.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Donna Duna of Souderton, two sons Willard, Jr. (Hope) of Perkasie, and Andrew of Bechtelsville. Five grandchildren Stephen, Andrea, Jenny, Christopher, and Sharrah and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson Eric and three brothers Bob, Russell, & Ralph.

(Porter) Greer, 56, of Quakertown, passed away on June 22 at Lankenau Medical Center, Wynnewood. Joan was born on August 20, 1962. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her four children: Patrick, Brian, and Alice Murphy, as well as Megan Nicolson. Along with Megan’s significant other Curtis Lee and their children Natalya, Savanna, and Curtis Lee III. Joan is also survived by her four sisters & their husbands; Kathy and Rodney Swartley, Carol and David Stampler, Jennifer and Walter Sinnwell, Patrice and Kyle Anderson.

Prior to ending her working career, Joan had worked in Quality Assurance at Teva Pharmaceuticals for almost 20 years, and more recently, Axcentria Pharmaceuticals in the same career field. Joan was very active with many non-profit organizations & charities over the years. Her passion for helping others was unparalleled. She was a proud mother who loved spending time with her family. Her favorite activities included cooking & baking especially with her son Patrick, reading, and tending her beautiful garden with her husband.

She was the most wonderful Nana to her grandchildren, who’s love can never be replaced. She was a loving wife, mother, Nana, Aunt and beloved sister. Joan was always a compassionate friend and her impact will never be forgotten. A piece of her will shine in every person she had the pleasure to meet.

American Legion Post 242 July Update

BY DICK HELM Midsummer is usually slow as far as events.

We ask you to keep an eye out for any special breakfasts, special summer events, or special dinners offered to both “Just members” and the general public. Charley Wismer mentioned to shout out a special thanks to all that helped make the Post’s Spring Veteran’s Drawing a success. He mentioned that the drawing brought in more that $3700.00 for this worthy cause. He stressed to “Thank All.” Sometimes it is frustrating to come to the meeting and if one or two of the regulars are missing we cannot even have a meeting. Imagine not having at least about “10” persons for the meeting of hundreds of members! But as Charley mentioned you do participate in our fund raising and as usually happens on Memorial Day we do pull off the ceremonies, even though the volunteer list is short during the planning. I can’t stress enough for more members to get involved. Always we encourage signing up new members.

Recently a person I have known since youth

had passed away and per his wishes no public services were held. This past weekend I participated in special military services for him after the family had a special reception in his honor. When I went in to pay my respects to the family, I reviewed the display of pictures of his life and was impressed by the unique urn with the US Army seal on top of it. Over the many years that I knew him and shared many moments of laughter and true fun; we never discussed his military service. He had to be in the Army about the time I was in, as he was my age. I noticed this among the Vietnam Period veterans I have known. They speak very little of their service; but as they age, that period of their life stands out.

I write this to you the readers both veterans and non-veterans to emphasize the fact that this past part of our life was crucial to us and as we age we look back at it as development of character and a guide for many of us to our future success.

We will never forget as he did not forget the strength of “Duty-Honor-Country!”

‘Mother says’ Lock the Screen Recently, I read an article that stated the following: “…pediatricians are suggesting the best toys for kids are old-fashioned, hands-on toys that spark imagination and creativity.

Skip the screens and costly electronic games, a report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics urges.”

Well, didn’t that take me back to my days growing up in the country! There were no electronics at that time, so country children had to use their imagination and be creative. And, that we were. Anything and everything was our toys and our playground. Our woods were the park, and trees, and limbs, and leaves, and grass, and rocks, and cardboard boxes were our toys. The boys had baseballs, bats, and gloves; they had trucks, fire engines, and cars that they pushed by hand – no remote controls.

We girls had our dolls, and most of the time mothers would make clothing for them, or at least my mother did. There were no Barbies with wardrobes, convertibles, vans, and boats.

Our dolls didn’t talk, walk, or drink from a bottle that made them wet their diapers. All of that was a part of our imagination. However, girls didn’t just play dolly and house; they also played with the boys.

The best toy that children possessed was a cardboard box. Have you ever noticed a toddler who gets a toy that is packed in a box? The toy is removed from the box, the toddler plays with it for a brief time, and then goes directly for the box and climbs into it if it is big enough or puts it over his head. As children got older, larger boxes were a major source of creativity. Refrigerator boxes were great for houses.

Parents would cut out windows and doors, and the children would decorate them inside and outside, and they would play in them for days. A toddler’s favorite room in their home was the kitchen. Before all the fancy gadgets to lock cabinet doors and drawers (and I think that is a great idea), they would waddle right over to the cabinet where the pots and pans were stored, pull them out onto the floor and start banging on them, much to the chagrin of their parents.

Back in the day children were outside all the time playing tag, climbing trees, riding their bike, hiking in the woods, throwing rocks in the creek as well as fishing, digging up earth worms after a summer rain, and playing with their friends if there were any nearby. There were also great games called jacks, marbles, Hopscotch, Hide and Seek, Leapfrog, and Simon Says. If more than one child had a yoyo, there was a competition to see who could keep the yo-yo going the longest and who could do the best tricks with it. And, if your parents could afford it, you had a set of Lincoln Logs that you could build things with beyond your imagination. Of course, there were books to read, card games to play, and interactive songs to sing. It was an enjoyable time to grow up.

This report goes on to say that, “…heavy use of electronic media may interfere with children’s speech and language development, replace important playtime with parents and lead to obesity. Studies also have found that more than 90 percent of U.S. kids have used mobile devices and most started using them before age 1.” In the report, it is recommended: “no screen time for children up to age two and says total screen time including TV and computer use should be less than one hour daily for ages two and older.”

I believe that limited screen time will not harm a child. Moderation is the key. Children growing up with an overload of technology in the 21st Century are losing social skills, imagination, creativity, the human hands-on connection, and the ability to communicate.

I tried to hold a conversation with a teenager over the weekend, and they were totally disconnected from me because their technology was glued to the palm of their hand. And, this is the world as I see it. Have an enjoyable July.

The PA BPW Foundation supports statewide scholarships and members in need.

Alexis Werner of the Central Montgomery County BPW won the Young Careerist Program Competition. Irene Landes of the Souderton-Telford BPW was recognized for her 68 years of membership. There were 20 members in attendance.

The Simple Art of Flying I recently read this beautiful children’s book that I think you all would enjoy as well. It’s a book about life moving on and how relationships change with time.

The Simple Art of Flying By Cory Leonardo, 384 pages – ages 9+.

Published by Aladdin on February 12, 2019 Synopsis: Alastair knew he would always have his sister Aggie. No matter what happened in their African grey parrot-lives, he knew they would always be together. Until a medically-fascinated boy adopts Aggie. Until a lonely old woman adopts Alastair.

Everything changes, and there can’t be anything good to come out of it.

Finding solace in poetry, Alastair tries to think of ways to reunite with Aggie and fly to parrot paradise. Never mind that flying might be difficult if you start pulling out your feathers, Alastair needs to come to grips with how life changes everything.

What I Thought: This was one of those bittersweet books to read. The story is both sad and happy, reflecting the tendencies of life – nothing is permanent, but we can always make the best of what we do have. One of the

things that I did love about the story was that when the parrots get adopted, their owners also cross paths – progressing the story, but also keeping the melancholy to a minimum.

The book is for a more mature reader, as it tackles tough-to-handle subjects and ideas, but it is entirely appropriate for the age-group.

Alastair is a believable character, full of love for his sister – wanting the best for her. He is also irritable, selfish, and paranoid – making his actions have a complete sense of purpose. The reader will know that Alastair is doing the wrong thing, but they understand why he’s doing it.

Leonardo writes a book full of poetic ideals that discuss how life changes but we can work to overcome the change and grow with it. Leonardo’s writing style is interesting, with the chapters being from the perspective of Alastair, but between the chapters are letters from the old woman, medical reports from the boy, and poetry from Alastair that all progress the story in different ways. I was blown away by the quality of this book. I think it would be excellent to help kids broach the topic of losing a friend or family member, or moving away, or any similar circumstance. As Americans, we recognize the importance of honoring the sacrifice and dedication of America’s veterans as they serve to protect our country’s freedom. Hometown Heroes banner programs are one way that local municipalities are doing just that.

Paul Gerhart, Post Commander of Quakertown’s John Rivers Memorial VFW Post #11322, appeared before Quakertown Borough Council with Ed Brous, and John “Gunny” Sandle, also of the local VFW, to present the idea of a Hometown Heroes banner program for the Borough. Council unanimously embraced the idea.

Beginning this past May, 78 Hometown Heroes banners now grace designated poles in the Borough, with more waiting to be hung.

Gerhart points out that Quakertown honors the living as well remembering deceased veterans.

The banners are displayed around Memorial Park along Mill Street and down 4th Street.

Veterans who are alumni of Quakertown Community High School have their banners hung in the area of the school; many with their graduating year displayed in the corner.

Sandle commented that the earliest graduate is from the Class of 1925, and the most recent is from the Class of 2017. There are also several banners that honor members of different family generations – fathers, sons, grandfathers.

In a statement from the Borough, Courtney Boehm, Quakertown’s Assistant Parks and Recreation Coordinator, said, “The Borough is very proud to offer the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to honor the men and women who have served or who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. We have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the public with approximately 100 banners being hung this year throughout the Borough. The success of this program would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication from John Sandle, Paul Gerhart, and members of the John Rivers Memorial VFW Post. The Borough looks for-

ward to the continued success of the program in years to come”.

There are plans to place more banners throughout the Borough in coming years.

The Borough of Quakertown has a dedicated account for anyone inclined to donate to the Hometown Heroes banner fund to defray the cost of the banner setup. While many friends and families purchase the banners for their veterans, pole kits are a separate cost of $80. The 24” x 48” banners are $130 apiece. The durable vinyl banners have an expected lifetime

of two – three years. They will be displayed on Borough-designated poles Memorial Day through Veterans Day. Donations are accepted in any amount, but please be sure to note on the check that it is intended for the Hometown Heroes program or pole kits.

The Nuts and Bolts of a Durable Power of Attorney

BY ROBERT E. FRAVEL, ESQ. Without a doubt, one of the most commonly used estate planning documents is the Durable Power of Attorney. But what exactly is a Durable Power of Attorney and how does it work? Hopefully this article will clear up any questions surrounding the Durable Power of Attorney and help you decide if this is an estate planning document that would benefit your situation.

What is a Power of Attorney? A power of attorney is a document that grants legal rights and authorities from one person (called the “principal”, to another person (called the “agent” or “attorney in fact”). The agent essentially steps into the shoes of the principal and acts for him or her on financial and business matters. The agent can do whatever the principal may do – withdraw funds from bank accounts, pay bills, trade stocks, cash checks, etc. – except as provided for by the actual power of attorney document. This is not an unfettered right however. The agent must manage the finances for the benefit of the principal.

When does the Power of Attorney take effect? The power of attorney will take effect as soon as it is signed by the principal.

However, a “springing” power of attorney will only take effect when the event described in the document occurs (this is usually the incapacitation of the principal).

Does the Principal lose his/her rights when he/she signs a Power of Attorney?

Absolutely not. Only a court can take away

Preservation Tips for Paintings and Prints

People love their collections. No matter the type of object—cookie jars, military memorabilia, fine art prints—collectors want to add to a collection, display their assembled objects, and enjoy learning more about their treasures. One of the most important and interesting aspects of collecting is preserving collectibles, albeit art or antiques, for the long term. Many collections include family heirlooms or assembled collections that will be handed down so preserving a collection is very important. Here are some key points about how to protect, preserve, and enjoy your collections.

Light is the real problem when it comes to preservation of paintings and works on paper. UV protection using UV-filtered or opaque materials are key to preventing fading and light damage. One of the best ways to preserve fine art is investing in quality framing. For an oil on canvas painting, a frame will protect both the stretcher and the canvas as well as give a finished look to the painting.

Unlike paintings which should not be framed under glass as a general rule, prints require a different type of protection. Prints and other works on paper like antique maps, historic documents, etc. should be matted and framed under glass using materials that are free of acid in order to protect the paper. For acid free materials like mats and storage boxes, a pH level of 7.0 or greater used at the time of manufacture and adhesives that are pH neutral are recommended for framing fragile works on paper. Some acid free materials are made free of lignin, which can produce acid and darken paper known as tanning or acid burning.

Some of the most critical damage that happens to art and antiques happens when objects are stored. When you first put them away in storage, everything is fine but over time, change in temperature and humidity, and other affects that occur when no one is looking will impact the condition and value of an antique collection. Although it is little known, significant damage can occur during storage. It is important to store objects in archival boxes intended for a certain type and size of collectible. Support is necessary for fragile objects and storage containers like archival boxes need to be constructed to stand the test of time. One size does not fit all when it comes to storage.

Large paintings should be stored off the floor, preferably hanging up. If there is no room for that storage solution, then store large paintings standing upright. While it may seem convenient, never lay paintings flat, face up under a bed. Smaller paintings may be stored upright back to back and face to face on separated shelves. Use acid free foam core dividers to prevent the wire from the back of one painting from scratching the front of another painting.

There are specific techniques to protecting art, a good rule of thumb is to handle with care, display works of art away from direct sunlight and store works in areas where temperature and humidity fluctuations are minimal.

your rights through a guardianship /conservatorship proceeding. A power of attorney simply gives your agent the ability to act along with the principal.

Can the Principal change his or her mind afterwards? Of course. The principal may revoke the Power of Attorney at any time by simply sending a letter to the agent expressing that their appointment as agent has been revoked. Once, the letter is received by the agent, he or she can no longer act under the authority of the Power of Attorney.

What happens if the Agent becomes incapacitated or refuses to act as Agent? I always advise my clients to name an alternate agent in their power of attorney. This is a good way to protect yourself in the event that your agent becomes incapacitated or no longer wishes to bear the responsibility of being your agent. If this happens, the principal’s alternate agent would step in and assume the rights and responsibilities provided for by the instrument.

A Durable Power of Attorney can be a very useful and powerful tool for the estate plan.

However, you should sit down with an experienced estate planning attorney to discuss whether or not having this instrument will benefit your individual situation.

Since their introduction in 2014 as a 2015 model, Renegade, Jeeps’ smallest SUV, has been a big seller. There are loads of them on the roads. Many of which are being driven by females.

Renegade is assembled in Melfi, Italy and rides on the same platform as Fiat’s 500X AWD sub-compact crossover that is built there. But similarities end there as Renegade is its own breed.

It inherited a number of exterior and interior symbols of Jeep’s heritage such as the “X” on the taillights that denote Jeep’s iconic army jerrycans. Same goes for the painted Willys WWII Jeep silhouettes on the wheels and bottom part of the windshield. And the tachometer is decorated with a mud splash symbol, a tribute to its off-road competence.

Offered in Sport, Latitude, Limited and rugged Trailhawk, we were privileged to test the posh Limited that came with white leather, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and large 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice control.

For 2019, Jeep added a host of goodies

Cargo loading requires a mere 29-inch lift and there’s also a 6-inch deep, storage area beneath the height adjustable cargo floor. It covers the entire floor space, wherein a multitude of low profile items can be stowed there.

Renegade can be had with a choice of two powerplants. There’s the new turbocharged 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder that puts out 177-hp and 210 lb/ft of torque. This replaced the former 1.4L, turbo inline-4 with 160-hp and 184 lb/ ft of torque.

Then there’s the standard on Limited and Trailhawk versions, 2.4-liter, inline-4 that we tested. It produces 180-hp and 175 lb/ft of torque that earned EPA mileage estimates of 21 city 29-highway mpg. When coupled with the standard 9-speed automatic transmission, performance for this SUV that weighs 3,327 pounds, is exceptionally strong. It offers decent grunt from a standing stop and when passing. It does become a bit noisy though under hard acceleration. But if it bothers use, just turn up the volume on the 506-watt Beats audio system.

including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity and like most FCA vehicles, Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

After a comfortable 20-inch step-in, its greenhouse spaciousness of the interior gives it an airy look and feel. Its HVAC controls are large and easy to use without having to study the owners’ manual. And Renegades’ 4WD system controls are clustered in a dash pod and are also easy to use and see. Front seats too are top-shelf, heavily padded and soft to ease long-distance trips.

In the back seat, the 60/40 seats are also nicely padded and comfy with marginal legroom especially if the fronts are racked well rearward. But headroom is ample, even for 6-footers.

With the rear seats upright, there’s 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space. That translates into an area measuring 26 inches deep, 38.5 wide and 30 high. Flip the 40/20/40 seatbacks and space expands to 50.8 cubic feet for 60 inches of cargo loading depth. That can increase a bit by folding the front passenger seat-back to haul lengthy items.

Ride quality is similar to that of its compact competitors and is relatively smooth on Goodyear Eagle 18-inch tires. And because of its size, Renegade is nimble with a 35.3 foot turning diameter, making it easy to park and tremendously fun to drive.

Renegade Limited’s base price of $27,445 comes with a long list of standard safety and convenience features including stability control, electronic roll mitigation, rain sensing wipers tire pressure monitoring, remote start, heated steering wheel, automatic headlamps and more.

The options list is as follows: Advanced Technology Group ($995) with full-speed forward collision warning, lane departure warning, Park Sense rear park assist; Safety/ Security Group ($895) with blind spot/cross path detection, high intensity headlamps, security alarm, tonneau cover; Uconnect infotainment system ($1,245) with 8.4-inch Nav group, 1-year satellite radio service, Sirius Traffic Plus/Travel Link and more, brought the bottom line to a reasonable $33,670 with delivery.

So far, Renegade received a four out of five-star government safety rating for frontal crash and three for rollover. Side crash was not tested so an overall score was not given.

Renegade makes a dandy all-weather capable 4WD SUV for all age groups, including a commuter car, and its perfect for a college student. Best of all, Renegade has Jeep’s inherited ruggedness and renowned sure-footedness.

Well here we go again folks. Our zoning hearing was cancelled because they were a person short on the board so it is now July 9th at 7PM in the township bldg. at 2100 Krammes RD in Quakertown. Public is invited and we could use supportive friends to show up. I won’t be there but my human will be. We need an OK from the zoning board in order to get the conditional use permit. For those of you new to this problem of mine I will explain. Thirteen years ago when I went to the township the code enforcer neglected to tell me I needed a permit to do what I do and now we are playing

Upper Bucks, Upper Perk Get Rocked by Kindness

BY JENNIFER REHRIG If you’ve stumbled upon a painted rock while out running errands lately then consider yourself one of the lucky ones. That rock was meant for you to find. Did it bring a smile to your face? We hope so. Perhaps it was painted with a cute animal or a word of inspiration.

The combinations are endless.

The Kindness Rock Project was started by Megan Murphy in 2015. Megan had lost both of her parents and was searching for small trinkets that reminded her of each of them. While searching for such trinkets Megan noticed other people searching for the same inspiration.

She decided to leave rocks in her town with inspirational messages written on them. Her first rock read “you got this”. The Kindness Rocks Mission is that “one message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life”.

We’re lucky enough to now have two kindness rock groups in our area. The Quakertown Rocks! group was founded in 2017 by Karen Rowley. Like Megan she had experienced a tragic loss of a family member. Karen’s daughter was always drawn to collecting rocks and one day picked up a rock at a family members house that turned out to be the catalyst to her starting Quakertown Rocks! The rock her daughter picked up that day belonged to the family member that had passed tragically.

After hearing the story about that rock from her brother-in-law, Karen started thinking about how we are really drawn to the little things in life, like a rock, but with a larger meaning behind it. She heard about a rock group from a friend in Florida and after researching found out about the Kindness Rocks Project. From there Quakertown Rocks! was born. After some time Cara Gregory stepped in to help Karen with the group. She has been integral in keeping the group going and growing. The Quakertown group started by placing rocks around the community for people to find.

Valarie Wanner started a kindness rock garden at the Lehigh Valley Hospitals Health Center on Pumping Station Road in Richland Township. A second rock garden at St. Luke’s Hospital in Quakertown was founded

by Alison Wright who began leaving rocks at St. Luke’s hospital for patients, visitors, and staff to find. Both rock gardens are part of the Quakertown Rocks! group. Jim and Stephanie Young started Upper Perk Rocks in October 2017 after their daughter, Dannica, found her first rock in Quakertown. They posted her find to Facebook. The family read more about the rocks, the movement and their inspiration.

After becoming excited about the Kindness Project they looked for a group in their area.

Unfortunately there was not a group so they started one and founded the Upper Perk Rocks group. Both groups can be found on Facebook at Quakertown Rocks! and Upper Perk Rocks.

Dennis Pfleiger, President, of St. Luke’s Hospital’s Quakertown Campus enjoys having the rock garden on his campus. Mr. Pfleiger said that “Seeing the rocks artwork and messages help patients and visitors relax and feel good. The garden is beneficial to the campus and I enjoy watching people walk by, stop, and then smile.” Mr. Pfleiger also intends to find a space at the new location for an additional kindness rock garden.

The goal of both groups is simple: Promoting random acts of kindness to unsuspecting recipients by painting and hiding inspirational rocks for others to find. It’s the power of people’s collective desire to do something nice for a stranger that makes the Kindness Rocks Project so unique. The people within the Facebook rock groups are very supportive of

each other’s artistic abilities. Today both local groups combined have over 3,000 members on Facebook and their rocks have touched nearly all 50 states and as far as Bermuda, Ireland, England and Asia, and those are just the ones that they know of.

Rock artists consist of all age levels, races and walks of life. Everyone from toddlers who use blobs of paint to show their love, classrooms of students, families who paint together for some much needed family time, and seniors who are looking for an inspirational hobby.

One of the favorite things most of the rock painters enjoy is when a rock is posted on Facebook and they can read about what that tiny stone has done for the finder. Some of the frequent posts are: I needed this today, this little rock made me smile, finding it changed my

outlook on today, I so love this, I can’t wait to share it with my family and friends, and what a fun discovery.

There definitely have been stories over the past few years that have really stuck out too.

Messages have come back to the group saying “I held this rock through my chemo treatments.”, “On one of my darkest days, it was in the right spot, at the right moment.“, and “You have no idea how much your rock brought my mother joy in the hospital.“. Recently a rock finder posted that the rock they found gave them consolation when a family member had passed away. Yes, a little rock did that!

Our local kindness messages are spreading too. After hearing Preston and Steve talk about rocks on their radio show on WMMR 93.3 Upper Perk Rocks member, Keith Gerhart, painted a WMMR rock and a Preston and Steve Show rock. After contacting the station to see how he could get the rocks to the radio show hosts he was invited to be a guest on their morning radio show to chat with them about rock painting.

The Quakertown Rocks! Kindness Rock Gardens can be found at St. Luke’s Hospital on Park Avenue and at Lehigh Valley Hospitals Health Center on Pumping Station Road and Route 309. The Upper Perk Kindness Rock Gardens are located at Red Hill Dental in Red Hill and at Project Live on Jefferson Street in East Greenville.

If you’d like to get started and paint some rocks for either of the groups please reach out to us on Facebook. Hundreds of rocks are placed in the rock gardens each week. The members of each group would love to help you get started and will answer any questions you may have.

The Desire to Win The generation that included the “Class of ‘61” had that special trait that I call the “Desire to Win.” In football our classmates that participated in that sport were fortunate to have Dick Wisneski as their head coach.

His assistant coaches were all of high caliber and also inspired the “Desire to Win.” Friday’s before the football games we had “Pep Rallies” showing that the students wanted them to win. At the games they set a special area aside for the student cheering section and I am sure that this inspired the players when they needed that extra “Umpf!” I have not be in attendance at the football games for a few years since my buddy Clayton Molnar and I went to games after the new field was installed. Back just those few years ago, I still noticed that special school spirit. I just hope it still remains.

I give the above example on what I witnessed back then and in recent years with Quakertown High School football and coaches such as Dick Wisneski, Doug Peiffer. Paul “moose” Barndt, Brian Fluck, Ray Ely, and Don Young. Winning was important and loosing was not looked on as a negative. Loosing was either the other team outplayed us and had good talent or because of our mistakes. The most important item in loosing was to inspire the team or person to win by reviewing why they were better or what our mistakes were and the corrections needed.

When I was draft into the “Army” back in 1965 and went to Boot Camp at Fort Jackson that was such an overflow that we slept in 8-man tents all during Basic Training, the constant stress was “Winning!” The Drill Instructors (D.I.s) told us after the first few days of testing and when we got into the down and dirty part of the training that the training was recently changed and was much more intense. Why, they (D.I.s) were so hard on us was not to compete with the Marines as tough training, it was for us to WIN in the time of combat that was surely coming. They told us they wanted us to come home safely. Unfortunately some of us, including my new friend Steve Harris, even though he received that training, never returned home because of overwhelming forces in the start of this war. Steve was taught to win and was a winner in my heart even though his unit was overwhelmed!

When I went into the work force, I was never satisfied at the Status Quo. I went into sales of autos and other sales and was quite successful. I tried new marketing techniques and they worked. Wanting to have more of a regular workweek, I went to work at JG Furniture at a much lower income rate as their receiving clerk. Again in the desire to win as was illustrated by Dick Wisneski’s showing football films to everyone during regular class as instruction to the players and the rest of us, took hold. I did not stay in the “Status Quo”; I bid on other jobs to advance, took many additional courses needed and eventually became head of their Industrial Engineering Dept. I advance to higher management as Plant Manager during my time their in all three of their plants.

I and my wife met with my mentor Jim Scully, an investment counselor, soon after we were married, and he set up an investment plan for us and Dave Haines, my wife’s boss at Insaco also gave her additional advice when 401k’s came into being. We stuck fast to the plans they outlined and today we are able to live comfortably in our retirement.

The above examples are not given as a means of me to boast! During all these stages, school, the Army, my working career, and yes our investment plans, there were many setbacks and frustrations. We never quit. The spirit of the teachers we had back in the day when winning was not shown as a bad thing, my wife and I both learned to strive to do better –TO WIN! Incidentally my wife Nina, was a top scorer even scoring a Ten-X on the Rifle Team when not many girls were on this team. (Can you imagine our schools really did have a rile team!) During this time of the year, I hear on TV stories of sports teams giving trophies to all whether they win or lose. I hear of schools not allowing honoring scholastic awards to those who studied hard to become Valedictorian.

What kind of success will this discourage?

Many, I hope will still strive to WIN. My hope is that they will as being successful takes that extra effort. I have met many students in my various presentations, such as the 4th grade walking tour at Pfaff School recently. In the questions they ask, their yearning for History, and their energy, I see the great potential of this generation. I certainly would like to stress to them via this article to strive to WIN. What’s in a Wag? The biggest myth is, a wagging tail means “happy dog.”

Yes, dogs wag their tails when they are happy, but they also use them to communicate feelings. While barking can be used to broadcast feelings, dogs mostly rely on their body language to communicate. They use many parts of their body: eyes, ears, lips, stance, and tails to convey information. If you observe dogs closely for a period of time, you will quickly notice that there is no such thing as a uniform tail wag. Instead, dogs use different wagging speeds and different tail positions to communicate. Generally speaking, the position (or height) of the tail can be used as an emotional thermometer while the speed of the wag indicates how excited or aroused the dog is.

Tucked tail- when the tail is tightly tucked under the dog’s body this is a sign of intense fear or can also be a submissive display. Low Tail- usually associated with worry or being submissive. Middle or Neutral- how a dog carries his tail most of the time and is a sign of a relaxation. Some dogs naturally carry their tails high (Basenjis) and others carry it low (Greyhounds). Horizontal and Tense (straight

out at the back) - means that the dog is alert and attentive. High Tail- usually used to show assertiveness or to challenge others. Vertical tail- is a clear challenge and is used by dogs to say they are confident and in control.

In general, the faster the wag, the more excited the dog. Intensity- slight barely noticeable wag of small breadth (often seen during greetings) means the dog is hesitant. Broad wag- a sign of friendliness or contentment. This is the “happy dog wag.” If the dog is very excited, you may also see his hips wiggling from side to side. Tiny, high speed wags- if the tail is wagging in such a way that it looks like the tail is vibrating it means the dog is ready for action, usually to run or fight. When looking at your dog for clues about how he is feeling, remember to look at his entire body. Does the body look relaxed or are all the muscles tense?

Is the dog staring hard at you (another person or dog) or is he giving you soft eyes? Observe your dog regularly and take note of his postures to better understand him.

I always cringe a bit when I see that declaration, because, well, if Jesus is your co-pilot, someone is in the wrong seat!

Let’s face it! We as people of God love more than anything to go our own way, in our own way, having it our own way! And while we may be willing to allow Jesus to go “our way” with us, we seldom are willing to give up the steering wheel and allow Jesus to drive our car, our plane, our tractor, or our boat.

We are a people who love strategies, plans, and charting our course. We want to set goals and meet them, because it makes us feel secure. But wait a minute? Isn’t that God’s job?

If you look at the covenant between God and us, it pretty much clearly states that God’s job is to protect, guide, provide sustenance and life, and to chart our course. In other words, it’s God’s job to drive the car.

Our job is to have faith in God’s driving skills. We are to trust God, be loyal only to God, not trust anyone or anything else more than God, and to allow God to be in control.

In the gospel of Matthew (14:22-33), we encounter a story that involves Peter and Jesus walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee. Of the three accounts of Jesus walking on water in the gospels, only in the gospel of Matthew do we hear about Peter’s part in the story. That tells us that Matthew wants to tell us something very important about Peter’s role.

The traditional reading of the story would have us believe that it’s a good thing that Peter got out of the boat and dared to walk like Jesus. It’s Peter’s initiative that is celebrated.

But that doesn’t account for the interaction between Jesus and Peter in the story. Let’s take another look. The text is printed below.

In the beginning of the account, Jesus encourages the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him. After a period of time, the boat began to be buffeted by the wind and waves.

Shortly before dawn, Jesus comes to them walking on the water, but they don’t recognize him. They are terrified of him, because they think either he’s a ghost or a sea monster. Now we have the interaction between Peter (the leader of the disciples who takes on the role of protector and guardian of those in the boat) and Jesus whom Peter does not yet recognize as his Lord and Teacher.

Jesus says, “Don’t be afraid. It’s me, Jesus!”

Peter (defending his fellow brothers and suspiciously calling out to the shadow on the water): “If you’re really Jesus, then tell me to come to you over the water!” Peter has no plans to let this whoever he is into their boat!

He doesn’t trust that it’s really Jesus. How could Jesus be walking on water!

Jesus (going along with Peter’s bravado): Ok then, come on out!

At this point, Peter steps onto the water and starts walking toward him. And as long as he keeps his eyes on Jesus and begins to recognize him, he stays afloat. But as soon as he allows himself to be again distracted by the turbulent sea, the wind, and the waves, and realizes he is

in the midst of the depths of the sea, he panics, and takes his eyes (and his faith) from Jesus.

At this, he begins to sink.

Jesus rescues him, and they return to the boat together, and Jesus gets into it along with Peter. Immediately the wind ceases.

The disciples tried their best to take care of themselves and the boat without Jesus in it. In fact, Peter did everything to keep Jesus from getting to the boat and climbing in, because he didn’t trust who he was, or that he had the power not only to walk on water but to protect them in the storm. Peter felt, he had to be in charge. He didn’t realize that Jesus’ power is so much greater and so much more dependable than anything he could do on his own. And that even through the wind and waves, even when we can’t see as well as we hoped we could, Jesus is still there. And we need to let him in, and let him take the wheel.

Jesus has the power to protect us when we let him in our boat, and when we let him guide us through out storms.

We “will” encounter storms. We “will” encounter turbulence in our lives and in our relationships. And sometimes it may be hard to recognize Jesus in the midst of all of our anxiety and our worry. That’s where faith comes in. We need enough faith not just to meet Jesus halfway, but to let Jesus come all the way into our boat, and into our heart, to let him take the wheel and get our life back on course.

Are you facing storms in your own life that are blinding you to Jesus’ presence around you and within you? Are you unconsciously pushing Jesus away just when you need him most?

Take a step back and look again.

Jesus is there and has been all along. If you let him drive, you will embark upon the adventure of your life! All you have to do is let him in your heart.

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Last month’s article discussed how insects can be beneficial to your garden. This month we are going to discuss the other side of the insect world – the pests!

Today I saw my first Japanese Beetle (Popillia japonica) of the season (June 21st).

This species overwinters as larvae (grubs) in the soil. They move toward the soil surface as the soil warms and continue feeding on grass roots. Larvae mature from late May through June and molt to pupae in the soil. Adults emerge from the soil from late June through July. In Pennsylvania adults start to appear about June 20 in the southern areas. They emerge 7-10 days later in other areas of the state. Beetles are most abundant during July and the first two weeks of August. A mason jar with water and a little dish soap can be an effective weapon. You can flick them off the plant into the jar. A heavy stream of water will knock them off the plants, but they will probably reappear. If you choose to use a preventative pesticide, many grub killing products are available for lawn treatment during the times when the grubs are feeding closest to the surface and before they hatch. However, grub treatment is not necessary unless you have a grub infestation. The beetles could be coming

from a neighbor’s yard.

There are also pesticides to attack adults on plants, but caution should be used with any pesticide. Japanese Beetle damage is unsightly and plant leaves can be skeletonized with a high infestation. However, the damage does not normally kill the plant. The use of lures is not suggested as it can lure every Japanese Beetle in your neighborhood! Japanese beetles like to feed in full sun in the heat of the day. If you “harvest” the beetles from your plants regularly you may not be able to prevent damage, but you will be able to keep it to a minimum.

Another garden nemesis ready to rear its ugly head is mildew. Humid nights and hot, dry days are favorable conditions for Powdery Mildew, often seen on Perennials such as Bee Balm (Monarda), Cone Flower (Echinacea) and Phlox. Powdery mildew is characterized by white powdery fungus growing on the upper leaf surface of the lower leaves and often the stems of plants. High humidity in the evening favors spore production of this group of fungi, while low humidity during the day favors dispersal of the spores. Fungicides can help, but the best practice is to avoid watering plants in the evening so that the humidity level is not raised during optimum spore producing condi-

tions. Also, make sure your plants have room to breathe. Trim out some of the crowded plants to allow them to dry after watering or rain.

on the website, or call 1-888-4BAD-FLY. If you are already in a quarantined area it is not necessary to report the sighting, unless you are on the peripheral area between a quarantined area and a non-quarantined area.
