PUSHING ON

When the Windrush Generation began arriving from the Caribbean in 1948, how could they have imagined the challenges that they would face. They were met with immense hostility… literally signs saying no Blacks, no dogs, no Irish! They had to settle for slum housing conditions and take whatever work they could get. Theirs is a story of perseverance to fight for their place in British society. It is a story that we have been somewhat exposed to. However, what is not so well known are the stories of the children who came as part of the Windrush generation.

In 2023 Ubele will launch a project which will explore and document the childhood experiences of the first modern generation of Black Britons.

This is a diverse experience… some were born here whilst others re-joined their parents after a period of separation. They were growing up Black in London between 1955 and 1975.

In recent years some of the Windrush generation have had their legal status in the UK challenged and some even deported back to the countries of their birth. Despite the challenges, the Children of Windrush are here to stay along with their own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Many are in their 60s and 70s and time is of the essence to capture their stories. We will bring members of this community together, amplify their stories and celebrate their legacy. Do get in touch if you would like to find out more about this project and how you can contribute to this work. Email info@ubele.org
