RESEARCH IMPACTS

ENZYMES UNLOCK THE HIDDEN DIGESTIVE POWER OF GUT BACTERIA A study at UBC’s Michael Smith Laboratories found that gut bacteria can digest cellulose-based thickeners used in products such as ketchup, salad dressing and toothpaste, challenging the assumption that these additives pass through the body unchanged. Led by Dr. Harry Brumer and Dr. Deepesh Panwar, the study showed that natural polysaccharides from fruits, vegetables and cereals can prime bacterial enzymes to break down cellulose derivatives. Published in the Journal of Bacteriology, the work raises new questions about how common additives interact with the gut microbiome and could inform future research in human nutrition. CELLULOSE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMS RAYON PRODUCTION Rayon is one of the world’s most widely used textile fibres, but conventional production relies on harsh chemical solvents that carry significant environmental and workplace costs. Dr. Feng Jiang and PhD student Huayu Liu developed a cellulose-based process that reduces toxic solvent use by roughly 70 percent while preserving the softness and performance that make rayon commercially attractive. The work drew coverage in the Vancouver Sun and CBC Radio Canada, reflecting broad public interest in the environmental footprint of the clothing industry. By demonstrating that a cleaner process can meet commercial performance expectations, the research advances a credible pathway toward circular textile manufacturing and offers a practical option for producers seeking to lower the environmental impact of an established global supply chain.

MICROBES FOR SUSTAINABLE MINING

BPI IN THE MEDIA

Critical minerals underpin the technologies at the centre of the energy transition, yet conventional extraction carries substantial environmental cost. Working in collaboration with Rio Tinto, Dr. Steven Hallam and his team are harnessing microbial communities to extract critical minerals and support ecosystem restoration, an approach that reframes mining as a biological as well as a mechanical process. The Globe and Mail spotlighted the work as part of its coverage of innovation in the resource sector. The partnership illustrates how fundamental research in microbial systems can be directed toward industrial-scale challenges, and how established resource companies are turning to biological approaches to reduce environmental impact while securing the materials on which decarbonization depends. FROM RESEARCH SPARK TO BIOTECH STARTUP As a PhD student Athanasios Kritharis experienced firsthand the many challenges of replacing plastics with sustainable solutions. With his co-founders at Tydra Labs, Jaiya Varshney and Dr. Vikram Yadav, Dr. Kritharis recently raised $1.2M in pre-seed funding to scale their innovative solution to improve on bio-based products that fall apart when they get wet. At Tydra, they have developed a sustainable coating made of naturally occurring chitin obtained from food waste that is an emulsifier, thickener, film former, active carrier, and preservative support. This coating has multiple applications in cosmetics, agriculture and packaging. Dr. Kritharis reveals that his work at UBC and the BioProducts Institute quickly taught him that a great idea in the lab and a scalable industrial process are two very different things. He credits the gap between those two realities for shaping his approach to problem solving and leading him to the kind of breakthroughs that led to establishing a very promising startup.
