DRAMATURG’S NOTES The Man Who Came Dinner got its start in the mid-1930s, when Alexander Woollcott (famed radio personality and theatre critic who often invited and delivered mockery) showed up - unannounced - at Moss Hart’s Bucks County estate and generally acted like Sheridan Whiteside. On his way out, he wrote in Hart’s guest book, “This is to certify that I had one of the most unpleasant times I ever spent.” As Kaufmann and Hart were both laughing about it, Hart remarked that he was lucky Woollcott had not broken his leg and become stuck there. Kaufman looked at Hart and the idea was born.

Dorothy Parker (famous critic, poet, screenwriter, and very dear friend of “Aleck”) said of Woollcott: “He has seven or eight hundred intimate friends, with all of whom he converses only in terms of atrocious insult.”

This is clearly evident in the way Kaufman and Hart have portrayed him through the character of Whiteside.

From the premiere of The Man Who Came to Dinner in 1939 to the present day, George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s comedy continues to make audiences laugh. While the play is perhaps not the first of its kind to exaggerate and “poke fun” at famous people, the production was definitely the first to cast the same people into the very roles written so cleverly about them. In 1940, Alexander Woollcott - as well as Harpo Marx, of the Marx Brothers - toured the West Coast in The Man Who Came to Dinner playing the roles of Sheridan Whiteside (Woollcott) and Banjo (Harpo Marx). Like the inspiration for The Man Who Came to Dinner, Kaufman and Hart’s comedy displays a sharp but unique combination of innocence and ruthlessness, as well as bite and heart.

PROFILES Hank Stratton (Director) – Hank starred in the Broadway revival and television film adaption of The Man Who Came to Dinner, opposite Nathan Lane. For three seasons, he appeared in the CBS drama, The Unit, in addition to recurring roles on Heroes and American Dreams. His television work includes films for NBC, CBS, Hallmark, and HBO, along with numerous guest appearances, including The Closer, Desperate Housewives, Hawaii Five-0, ER, and Frasier. He had the privilege of playing Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works Festival. Additionally, he starred in the national tour of the Tony Award-winning production of Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, the Sam Mendes/ Rob Marshall collaboration of Cabaret, and the off-Broadway hit, Jeffrey. He recently directed The Laramie Project for the University of Michigan, and produced a concert benefiting the Matthew Shepard “Erase Hate” Foundation. He has served as a guest artist for educational institutions around the country, including master classes at UCLA, AMDA, The Academy for Classical Acting, and the Professional School of the Arts.

Hank is a co-founding instructor of Six Days of Broadway, a musical theatre performing arts camp at the prestigious Segerstrom Center in Southern California. He is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Patrick Holt (Costume Designer) – Patrick Holt’s costume design credits include the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s recent production of American Buffalo; the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s productions of The Three Musketeers, West Side Story, Peter Pan, James and the Giant Peach, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, As You Like It, An O. Henry Christmas, and Treasure Island; Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s productions of Othello, Hamlet, Richard III, Henry V, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for which he won the 2007 Best Costume Design Award by the Denver Post and Colorado Theatre Critics. For ART, recent designs include: Nine, Inspecting Carol, Julius Caesar, The Secret Garden, Into the Woods, Dracula, The Taming of the Shrew, The Tamer Tamed, Rum and Coke, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Medea, The Rocky Horror Show, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and many other designs. As Resident Costume Designer for Playmakers Repertory Company, designs include: All’s Well That Ends Well, The Laramie Project, The Man Who Came to Dinner, An O. Henry Christmas, The Glass Menagerie, and Master Harold and the Boys. He designed the world premiere productions of Romulus Linney’s Gint at The North Carolina School of the Arts, and Tazewell Thompson’s Constant Star at Playmaker’s Repertory Company.

Patrick’s work has also been seen at The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, The Moscow State Theater, The Utah Shakespearean Festival, The Carolina Ballet, the Public Theatre and Broadway productions of On the Town, The John Houseman Theatre, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, Bonneville Media, Shadow Mountain Productions, The inaugural season of the Roanoke Island

Festival Park (Scapino, The Fantasticks), The American Dance Festival and on HBO, CBS, and the A&E network. In 1999, his work traveled to the Prague Quadrennial Design Expo as part of the U.S. theatrical design exhibit. Patrick has taught at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and at The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Costume Design at the UA. Patrick is a member of United Scenic Artists, local 829.

Peter Beudert (Scenic Designer) – Peter’s recent professional scenic design work includes Dead Man Walking and Nixon in China at the Eugene Opera, Sweeney Todd at Notre Dame University, Hunter/Gatherers and THIS at the Actors’ Theatre Phoenix. Other recent professional productions include: A Going Concern at the award-winning Famous Door Theatre (Chicago), Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, and The Pajama Game and W;t at the Arizona Theatre Company. Here at the Arizona Repertory Theatre, he has designed scenery for Inspecting Carol, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Dracula, The Taming of the Shrew and The Tamer Tamed, Tartuffe, Henry IV Parts I & II, The Cider House Rules, Cabaret, Arcadia, The Kentucky Cycle, and many other excellent productions as well as the designing projections for The Who’s TOMMY. Peter is continuing a joint project of films about The University of Arizona with faculty and students of

PROFILES the Theatre and the Film and Television programs of the School. The film currently in production tells the story of A.E. Douglass and the creating of Steward Observatory. Peter initiated an advanced training initiative for theatre technicians known as Entertainment Technology in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Recently, he was a senior Fulbright Research Scholar working with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Paris Opera. This was his second Fulbright. He is co-author of all three editions of Scenic Art for the Theatre with Susan Crabtree. Professor Beudert is a member of United Scenic Artists. He is a recipient of the College of Fine Arts Charles and Irene Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching and holds the rank of University Distinguished Professor.

Deanna Fitzgerald (Lighting Designer) – Deanna is a professional lighting designer, an assistant professor, and is responsible for Lighting Design and Technology studies here at the UA. She is a member of United Scenic Artists and recently had an article published in the journal TDT (Theatre Design and Technology). Some of Deanna’s career highlights include the lighting design of Cirque Mechanics: Boom Town, which toured for two years with an off-Broadway appearance at The New Victory Theatre. She designed the lighting for the world premiere STOMP OUT LOUD, the Las Vegas version of the internationally acclaimed STOMP, and remained for two years as the Resident Lighting Designer and Associate Production Manager. Previously, she was the Resident Lighting Designer and Associate Professor for the departments of Ballet and Modern Dance at the University of Utah, and taught lighting design at the University of Cincinnati, CollegeConservatory of Music, and designed for the San Francisco Opera’s Merola and Coconut Grove Playhouse’s Young Artist programs. Other credits include six years as the Lighting Director on the International Tour of STOMP; Production Director of the Opera Theater Music Festival in Lucca, Italy; Lighting Supervisor/Assistant Lighting Designer at the Santa Fe Opera; Lighting and Tour Consultant for the Original Broadway Cast tours of the Greater Tuna trilogy and Assistant Lighting Designer at the Cincinnati Ballet. Myers (Sound Designer) – Mylan is very happy to be working with ART once again as a senior at The University of Arizona. As a Sound Design student, Mylan’s past UA credits include: The Fantasticks, Nine, Inspecting Carol, Bat Boy: The Musical, Encore!’s Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, and etc...’s Red Ridin’ in the Hood and Dos Cuentos. In addition, Mylan sound designed Steel Magnolias for Arizona Onstage Productions. As a freelance Audio Engineer, Mylan has recently worked for rock artist Papa Roach and toured with pop group The Backstreet Boys as a Front of House Engineer on their 2013 world tour. Mylan would like to

Ted Kraus (Technical Director) – Ted is honored to be a member of the School of Theatre, Film & Television’s Design/Tech faculty in his second year at The University of Arizona. He came to the UA after spending 24 years working in regional theatre and production houses in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; and Nashville, TN; including seven seasons as the Technical Director for the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta, GA. In 2010, he earned his M.Ed. from Belmont University where his work focused on the use of Problem Based Learning environments, like the theatre, to teach critical thinking. Ted would like to thank all of his BFA, MFA, and TAR 111 students for all of their hard work on this and all of the productions produced this season.

Katie Bücher (Stage Manager) – Katie is finishing up her time at The University of Arizona. Her previous productions here include The Secret Garden, Julius Caesar, Encore!’s Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, and Love Song. She has also stage managed and performed with Dance for a Cause in Tucson. Katie returned this summer from stage managing the Rocky Horror Show in Wenatchee, WA. Katie would like to thank her family for all of their wonderful support in her dreams.

Dianne J. Winslow (Dialect Coach) – Ms. Winslow teaches Voice and Movement and Period Styles with an emphasis in Shakespeare in our professional actor training programs. She coaches vocal production, textual analysis, and dialects for ART productions. Coaching assignments have included Cymbeline, Inspecting Carol, Avenue Q, Julius Caesar, The Secret Garden, As You Like It, Dracula, What I Did Last Summer, The Diary of Anne Frank, Rum & Coke, Medea, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Titus Andronicus, and The Miracle Worker. Over twenty-five production credits with Arizona Theatre Company include dialect coaching for The Sunshine Boys, Sherlock Holmes and the Adventures of the Suicide Club, Lost In Yonkers, The Lady with All the Answers, To Kill a Mockingbird, I Am My Own Wife, Pride and Prejudice, Oh, Coward!, A Streetcar Named Desire, Talley’s Folly, Over the Moon, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Proof, Valley Song, Candida, Fires in the Mirror, Dancing at Lughnasa, Noises Off!, Dracula, Fully Committed, and Sea Marks. At The Invisible Theatre, she was Voice and Movement Coach for the internationally acclaimed production of A Conversation with Edith Head, which played in London’s West End and continues to tour nationally. In Phoenix, she coached styles and dialects for Southwest Shakespeare’s London Assurance. A member of the Screen Actors Guild/ AFTRA, Ms. Winslow also works as a professional vocal coach for actors and private clients in the film and television industries.

Austin Beggs (Dramaturg) – Austin is currently a junior in the BFA Theatre History/Dramaturgy program at The University of Arizona. This is his first lead dramaturgy position for an ART main stage production. Other dramaturgy experiences include assisting for ART’s productions Nine and Inspecting Carol, along with leading on The Arsonists (in addition to assistant stage managing on that production as well) and co-dramaturging on Vinegar Tom, both through UA’s Studio Series. ~ ACTOR PROFILES ~ Sarah Bartley (Mrs. McCutcheon) – Sarah, originally from Denver, Colorado, is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major. She is excited to be a part of this comedic show and thankful that she was able to work with Hank. She was most recently seen as Annabella in ART’s production of Nine. Sarah would like to thank her Mom, Dad, supportive friends, professors, and God for their love, guidance, and knowledge throughout this incredible journey.

Micah Bond (Beverly Carlton) – Micah is thrilled to be appearing in this production. He is a junior Musical Theatre major and native Tucsonan. Last year on the ART stage, Micah played Iachimo in Cymbeline and Trekkie Monster in Avenue Q. Thanks go to his parents for their love and support, to Hank and the incredible cast and crew of The Man Who Came to Dinner, and to God, for His blessings and guidance. Some of his past roles in high school include Rent (Benjamin Coffins III), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Tom Snout), Reefer Madness (Jesus), and The Seven Year Itch (Tom MacKenzie). He is extremely grateful to be working with such a hilarious, talented cast and awesome director.

Michael Calvoni (Dr. Bradley) – Michael is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from Scottsdale, AZ. He is thrilled to be able to perform in two shows this semester. Michael recently played Robert in ART’s production of Boeing Boeing. Other credits include Princeton in Avenue Q, Cymbeline, The Secret Garden, and more. He would like to thank Lindsey; his mom & dad; the director, Hank Stratton; the cast and crew; and his family and friends for always supporting him in everything he does. Kathleen Cannon (Mrs. Stanley) – Kathleen is a senior in the BFA Acting program. Past ART credits include Teenage Greek Chorus in How I Learned to Drive, Julius Caesar and As You Like It. Favorite roles include Marc Antony in Julius Caesar (Powerhouse Apprentice production) and Cordelia in King Lear. She is a member of the Equity Membership Candidate Program.

Zackry Colston (Ensemble) – Zackry is a Tucson native and Sabino High School alum. He is making his ART stage debut in The Man Who Came To Dinner. He is excited to learn and grow as an actor alongside the incredibly talented cast.

Carolyn Fluehr (June Stanley) – Carolyn is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major from San Francisco, CA. Her previous roles at ART include the musicals Nine as La Fleur, in addition to Avenue Q and The Secret Garden as an ensemble member. Carolyn was inspired to be a part of this production to work alongside such a talented cast and crew. She thanks her family for their constant love and unyielding support, her friends for undying laughter, her professors for playing such a critical role in this growth process, and God for making it all possible.

Roberto Guajardo (Sheridan Whiteside) – Mr. Guajardo previously performed at Arizona Repertory Theatre five years ago as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Tucson audiences will be familiar with his work at Arizona Theatre Company, Borderlands Theater, Beowulf Alley, Invisible Theatre, and a host of other local theatres. He has also worked extensively in theatres throughout the state, including Arizona Jewish Theatre, Actor’s Lab in Scottsdale, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix, Phoenix Theatre, and the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts. Regional credits include appearances at The Pasadena Playhouse, San José Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, the Denver Center Theatre Company, and the Organic Theatre in Chicago. He has also made numerous appearances on television and in film. Roberto was honored to be the recipient of the 2008 Lumie award for lifetime achievement presented by the Tucson Pima Arts Council.

PROFILES Abigail Grace Harms (Mrs. Dexter) – Abigail is a sophomore Acting major from Sierra Vista, AZ. She is thrilled to be making her debut performance in ART’s production of The Man Who Came to Dinner.

Some of her favorite past roles include Patty in Grease, Lucy in William McNulty’s Dracula, and Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Abigail would like to thank Hank Stratton and this wonderful cast for an amazing experience, as well as her parents for their everlasting love and support.

Hunter V. Hnat (Professor Metz / Ensemble) – Hunter is very humbled to be taking part in ART’s production of The Man Who Came To Dinner. As a local Tucson boy, earning the opportunity to be a junior in this company is a dream come true. You may have seen him last year as Pisano in Cymbeline or perhaps as Elephant Topiary in The Secret Garden, his ART debut. He would like to thank his friends and family for all of their love and support.

Parker Janecek (Sandy / Ensemble) – Parker is a junior in the BFA Acting program. You may have last seen him in this season’s Boeing Boeing as the Parisian bachelor, Bernard, as well as understudying various roles from previous seasons, such as Guido in Nine as well as Princeton and Rod in Avenue Q. He is very thankful to be given this opportunity and would like to thank his family and friends for their unending love and support.

Steffan Jones (Ensemble) – Steffan is an up-andcoming actor who would like to thank everyone who has come before him and has helped pave the way for him. He is forever indebted to those who never gave up on him and are helping to see his acting career come to fruition.

Jordan Letson (Maggie Cutler) – Jordan is overjoyed to be in The Man Who Came to Dinner during this holiday season! She is a senior in the BFA Acting program and looks forward to graduating in May and pursuing a career in acting. She recently appeared as Comic Nurse in ATC’s The Sunshine Boys in Phoenix. She was also the understudy for Lady Bracknell in ATC’s The Importance of Being Earnest starring Allyce Beasley. Here at ART, you’ve seen her as MJ McMann in Inspecting Carol and Popilius Lena in Julius Caesar. Other credits include: CB’s Sister in Dog Sees God, The Vagina Monologues, and Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She must thank her family, friends, senior class, Hank, and her husband, Nathan, for their endless support and love.

Sydnee Ortiz (Sarah) – The Man Who Came to Dinner is Sydnee’s third ART show. She was previously in Nine as Sarraghina and Avenue Q as Gary Coleman. Sydnee is a transfer student from Vacaville, CA. She has been involved in numerous productions with Solano Community Theatre, such as Cinderella, Footloose, High School Musical, Guys and Dolls, Seussical: The Musical, RENT, Annie, and Ain’t Misbehavin’. She performed in

Dreamgirls with Ivory Arts, Legally Blonde with Missouri Street Theatre, and Jesus Christ Superstar and Arsenic and Old Lace with Bay Area Stage. She was also in Great American Trailer Park Musical with Benicia Old Town Theatre, where she won the 2010 Arty for Best Supporting Actress. Sydnee is the recipient of several theatre award nominations and the winner of a gold medal for Best Actress in the one-act stage play of Heart in the Ground for the Lenea Festival 2010. She graduated from the Actor’s Training Program at Solano College.

Sydnee would like to thank her Mom, Nana, and family for all their love and support. They have been with her through everything.

Joey Rudman (Mr. Stanley) – Joey is a senior BFA Acting student from Highland Park, IL. He began his career at Second City in Chicago. Since then, he has performed in Cymbeline (Cloten), Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Take Me Out (Shane Mungitt), On Stars Not Falling (Jake), and Inspecting Carol (Bart). He thanks his family and friends for their love and support.

Kate Strauss (Miss Preen) – This is Kate’s seventh production with ART. Some of her other roles at ART have included Molly in Love Song, the Mother in How I Learned to Drive, Soothsayer in Julius Caesar, and Susie in The Voice of the Prairie. Paul Michael Thomson (Richard Stanley) – Paul is so grateful and excited to be a part of this production! A junior here at the UA, Paul is pursuing a dual-degree in BFA Acting and Africana Studies, with minors in Spanish and Art History. Previous roles include: Guiderius in Cymbeline (ART), Luther in Inspecting Carol (ART), Lucius in Julius Caesar (ART), and Mark in RENT (Greasepaint). As the Vice President of Theta Alpha Phi, the co-ed theatre fraternity, Paul could not be prouder to be a member of Arizona Repertory Theatre and would like to thank all who guide him - directors, professors, family, friends, and God. Max Tzannes (Bert Jefferson) – Maxwell is a senior Musical Theatre major. He is extremely excited and honored to be a part of this production of The Man Who Came to Dinner. At ART, Max was recently seen as Guido Contini in Nine and Boy Bear in Avenue Q. Some of his prior credits include Marius and Danny Zucko in the Miramonte High School productions of Les Miserables and Grease, respectively. Silvia Vannoy (Lorraine Sheldon) – Silvia is thrilled to be continuing her ART career as a part of the 2015 class. Some of her favorite past roles include Gloria in Boeing Boeing, Lady of the Spa in Nine, Cherie in Bus Stop, Rizzo in Grease, and herself in the webseries, Spaces, Places, Faces.

Silvia is from Portland, Oregon, and would like to extend the greatest of thanks to her family; her best friends, Alyssa and Parker; and her mentee, Audrey, for all the unconditional love and support they have shown her through the years.

Owen Virgin (Banjo) – Owen is a senior here at the UA and has enjoyed past roles such as Sandy Tyrell in Hay Fever, Eugene Jerome in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Greg in Reasons to be Pretty, and his most recent performance at ART as Bean in Love Song. THEATRE POLICIES House Policies: Please turn off watch alarms, mobile phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices. Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted in the theatre. The use of cameras or recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited. Children five and under and strollers are not permitted in the theatre.

Seating Policy: Productions begin on time. Generally, each theatre will open for seating 30 minutes before curtain. There is no late seating.

Refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. All ticket sales are final.

he goal of our Take Your Seat! campaign is to raise funds for the Showcase of Talent Endowment. The annual Showcase of Talent provides an opportunity for senior Acting and Musical Theatre majors to audition for, and interview with, industry professionals for theatre, film and television across the country.

These potential employers also interview and review portfolios of junior and senior Design/Technology and Dramaturgy majors, as well as present valuable workshops to help students transition into the professional world.
