BFA 2016 Sound Design & Technology

After graduating from the University of Arizona, John embarked on the Oceania Marina and traveled the high seas. Working as a stage technician, he had the incredible opportunity to enjoy locales he'd never imagined visiting before, as well as develop his skills working on the productions on board. He spent last summer at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY, as a Sound Design Fellow. At the Hangar, he designed two Wedge shows (Pinter's The Room and Wilder's Pullman Car Hiawatha), two Kiddstuu shows, and was Aassistant Sound Designer on the mainstage productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Foreigner, and Romeo & Juliet. Following his time in Ithaca, John set sail again, this time on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer, where he is working as an Assistant Stage Manager.

BFA 2016 Theatre Production Stage Management

Notes After graduating with a BFA in Theatre ProPro duction, emphasis in Stage Management, Sara made the big leap across the country and landed in the heart of Washington, D.C., working for the Shakespeare Theatre Company as a Stage Management Fellow. She was able to apply all of the skills she learned at the UA to a (union) LORT B theatre in a thriving city center. Not only was Sara able to work backstage and assist in running the deck for multiple shows, she even got the opportunity to train in, and call, two mainstage shows for a couple nights. While Sara was working on her degree, she also worked with Arizona Theatre Company in both Production and Company Management, and worked summers at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Company Management. Missing the administrative side of the theatrical world, Sara took a job as Assistant Production Manager at Round House Theatre Company in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., and has made the D.C. theatre community her home. She loves her new job as she is able to work on a production, seeing the bigger picture, assists in overseeing the production department and takes on the role of Company Manager, managing artist travel and housing for the entire season.

DRAMATURGY NOTES An only child, Charles Addams was raised in the very Victorian-style, upper middle class suburb of Westfield, NJ, and found inspiration in the dark, saucy secrets of his smiling neighbors. He spent much of his childhood making mischief, breaking into abandoned old homes, and drawing skeletons and crypts on the walls.

In 1935, The New Yorker magazine recognized Addams' artistic talent and hired him, and it was there that the dark, funny, and insightful Addams Family franchise was born.

Addams and his Addams Family cartoons were so unique and popular that they caught the eyes of major Hollywood players such as Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock. Soon after, the kooky family went from print to screen, and over the course of more than 50 years, The Addams Family was adapted and then re-adapted into multiple TV shows, TV movies, animated series, and feature films.

Fun, funny, and fantastically dark, the misadventures of The Addams Family continue to resonate with a changing and restless America. This family has been through two World Wars (and a few cold ones), missile crises, embargoes, space races, the Civil Rights Movement, the multiculturalist movement, free love, the advent of hip hop and much more.

Most importantly, they show it is okay to be different; even strange: “...normal is an illusion.” Despite their many individual quirks, love, honesty, and family are what really count.

Still macabre, still masochist, still hilarious, the musical adaptation of The Addams Family travels into a territory that is both new and familiar to audiences: Wednesday has grown up and fallen in love! Worse yet, the object of her affection is horrifyingly (gulp) normal. Through the rip-roaring clashes of pomp and romp, audiences see that even the most “normal” of us has a little “Addams” deep within. Though dark, mysterious, and strange, The Addams Family is the American family – loving, warm, close-knit, and quirky. And, like many families, they struggle with letting go of the way things were.

Marshall Brickman (Book Co-Author) - Marshall Brickman, born in Brazil of American parents, attended New York public schools and the University of Wisconsin, where he received a double baccalaureate in both science and music.

He entered show business first as a member of the folk group The Tarriers and then, along with John and Michelle Phillips, as one of The New Journeymen, a precursor of The Mamas and the Papas, whose flamboyant lifestyle and eccentric harmonies defined the post-folk era of tunin up, turning on and cashing in.

Trading in his Gibson Mastertone 5-string banjo for an IBM Selectric, he secured a position as writer/director on Candid Camera, America's original reality show, a wildly successful early experiment in monetizing public humiliation, for which he hereby apologizes.

Fleeing Candid Camera, Brickman found solace as head writer for Johnny Carson, whose late-night show on NBC emanated from ironically named Radio City in midtown Manhattan, a stroke of luck that allowed him to stay as far from Los Angeles as possible while still retaining U.S. citizenship. In 1970, he left NBC to become producer/head writer of Dick Cavett's late-night show on ABC. Among the many ground-breaking events that Cavett introduced into the late -night formula was the night presidential hopeful George McGovern was interviewed by last-minute guest host Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics. The result was fascinating, not unlike watching a python ingesting a small cow.

In the meantime he had started a collaboration with Woody Allen, a young comic who opened for the Tarriers at Fred Weintraub's Bitter End, the legendary Bleeker Street Coffee House that provided exposure to upcoming talent in music and comedy. They worked at odd hours on screenplays and material for Allen's early TV appearances, an experience like no other.

Brickman watched Mr. Allen negotiate both the creative and practical issues confronting

an artist working in a commercial environment; he learned things that can't be taught and never laughed as hard as the time spent roaming the city with a certified genius discussing art, politcs, women, the state of the business, and why Durwood Kirby was considered funny, even by people with college degrees.

Mr. Brickman's film work as author (or coauthor with Woody Allen) includes Sleeper, Annie Hall (Academy Award), Manhattan, (AA nomination) and Manhattan Murder Mystery. As film writer/director: Simon, Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, Sister Mary Explains it All. In television: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (head writer, 1967'70); The Dick Cavett Show (head writer/coproducer), 1970-'72).

Brickman's recording (with ex-Tarrier Eric Weissberg) of the soundtrack of Deliverance, released in 1970, contained the surprise hit "Dueling Banjos," achieved platinum status, and remains a healthy seller over 40 years later.

His first foray into musical theater resulted in Jersey Boys, which won the Tony, Olivier, Helpmann, Grammy and many other awards worldwide, is in its twelfth year on Broadway, has been seen by 20 million people worldwide, and is currently the 10th longest running show in the history of Broadway. The film version of the show was directed by Clint Eastwood.

Mr. Brickman's other theatrical efforts include "Turn of the Century," which played to capacity houses in Chicago, and "The Addams Family," starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, which ran for two years on Broadway and to date has had over four thousand first and second tier productions internationally.

In addition to his work in film and theater, Mr. Brickman has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals. he is the 2006 recipient of the Writers' Guild of America Ian McClellan Hunter Award for Lifetime Achievement.

His current project is a stage musical celebrating the life of western star Roy Rogers, scheduled to premiere late in 2017.

After over 40 years in the business, trying to balance talent with opportunity and watching the careers of colleagues, both successful and less so, he can reduce what he's learned into one succinct bit of wisdom: above all, it's important to be lucky.

Rick Elice (Book Co-Author) - co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick) and won five, more than any play of the season. It's currently playing in New York and on tour across North America.

Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), currently touring North America, with productions in Europe and South America. In 2014, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego presented the world premiere of his new musical, Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Super Fly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.

Andrew Lippa (Music and Lyrics) - Andrew Lippa's new hit song, "Evil Like Me" appears in Disney's "Descendants." Written for Kristin Chenoweth, the soundtrack hit #1 on the "Billboard 200" album chart, #1 on the iTunes and Billboard soundtrack charts, and has been viewed over 50 million times on YouTube. Recently, Andrew composed and conducted a world premiere piece for the international piano virtuoso Lang Lang and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in Guangzhou, China. This new work, a

32-minute, 5-movement piece called "Rising Tide," will be reprised later in 2016 and recorded in China. Lippa's epic Concept Opera, "I am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk" had its world premiere at The Music Center at Strathmore in April of this year starring Kristin Chenoweth as Anne Hutchinson and Mr. Lippa as Harvey Milk.

This summer is the US premiere of "Life of the Party" - a musical compendium of Mr. Lippa's career - produced by Theatreworks in Mountain View, CA, and starring Mr. Lippa.

Broadway credits include: Music and lyrics for "Big Fish" directed and choreographed

by Susan Stroman; Tony-nominated music and lyrics "The Addams Family" (over 1,000 productions worldwide); music for Aaron Sorkin's play "The Farnsworth Invention" directed by Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys). In 1999, he contributed three new songs to the Broadway revival "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" (including "My New Philosophy" for Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth) and created all new arrangements. Off Broadway credits include: "The Wild Party" (book/music/lyrics) which won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and Drama Desk Award for Best Music; "John & Jen" music and co-wrote book (w/Tom Greenwald). His epic oratorio for men's chorus, orchestra and soloists, "I Am Harvey Milk" has seen over 20 productions including Disney Hall and Lincoln Center.

His musical "A Little Princess" (written with Brian Crawley) premiered at Theatreworks, was seen in concert at Texas State University in 2011, and is licensed for worldwide production by Music Theater International (MTI).

Mr. Lippa is proud to have been music director for many concerts for Kristin Chenoweth, including the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. Recordings include Julia Murney's CD, I'm Not Waiting; The Addams Family (Decca Broadway and Spanish and German productions); Big Fish (Broadway Records); The Wild Party (RCA Victor); You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (RCA Victor), which earned him a Grammy Award nomination; A Little Princess (Ghostlight); and John & Jen (two different recordings: Ghostlight and Broadway Records), I Am Harvey Milk. Mr. Lippa also produced the original cast recording of "Bat Boy" (RCA Victor).

Awards: Tony and Grammy nominations; shared Emmy for Nickelodeon's "The Wonder Pets"; The Gilman/Gonzalez-Falla Theater Foundation Award; ASCAP's Richard Rodgers/New Horizons Award; The Drama Desk Award; The Outer Critics Circle Award.

PROFILES Danny Gurwin (Director) - Broadway credits include How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Little Women, The Full Monty, Urinetown, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Kismet and A Little Night Music (NYCO revival, LA Opera, and Kennedy Center), as well as Forbidden Broadway, The Thing About Men, and many others off-B'way. Danny is currently Head of Musical Theatre at the UA and has directed Arizona Repertory Theatre’s Evita, RENT, Cabaret (MAC winner 2015), The Full Monty, Oklahoma!, The Fantasticks, Nine, Hands on a Hardbody, as well as Encore! and the Freshman Acting II Showcases. In addition, he has created and directed the Senior Showcase of Talent 2013, 2014, 2016, and the recent Class of 2017. TV credits include Desperate Housewives, Law & Order, among others, and he can be heard on numerous cast recordings. Christie Kerr (Choreographer) – is excited to return to the UA for her second year as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre. Prior to this, she lived in Chicago, IL, where she was teaching at Columbia College, Chicago. Last year, Christie choreographed Arizona Repertory Theatre's Hands on a Hardbody and Evita and was Director/ Choreographer for Encore’s production of All That Jazz - The Songs of Kander and Ebb. She has worked throughout the country as a director, choreographer, teacher and performer. Select Directing/Choreography credits include: Crazy For You, West Side Story, Spamalot, 42nd Street and The Drowsy Chaperone. Select theatres include: Porchlight, Little Theatre on the Square, Theatre at the Center, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Fox Valley Rep, Metropolis, BoHo, Theo Ubique, Williams Street Rep, and Prather Entertainment Group. Christie holds a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance from The University of Michigan and is a proud member of SDC. Mike R. Padilla (Music Director, Conductor, Key 1) – Mike’s career spans over 34 years in San Francisco (Cabaret Artist, Pianist, Actor & Vocal Coach), Tucson and Japan. Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include Evita, Hands on a Hardbody, Cabaret, RENT, The Full Monty, A Little Night Music and Urinetown. Mike's also been the Music Director for the Ben Vereen Awards for three years, Arts Express, Christian Youth Theatre and Arizona Theatre Company (for Summer on Stage, and as conductor for their recent production of Fiddler on the Roof). Local stage credits: Invisible Theatre, Southern Arizona Light Opera Company, The Gaslight Theatre and the Great American Playhouse. He studied acting and singing at Studio ACT and the SF Academy of Performing Arts. He is a UA Instructor, maintains a private voice coaching studio and is a proud member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Patrick Holt (Costume Designer) – Recent design credits include An Enemy of the People at Playmakers Repertory Company, Sweet Charity at Pioneer Theater and American Buffalo at the Kansas City Rep. Other credits include The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Moscow State Theater, The Old Globe San Diego, The American Dance Festival, The John Houseman Theater, HBO, CBS and the A&E Network. Patrick has designed over 20 productions for Arizona Repertory Theatre.

He recently starred in the feature film Cherry Pop, appeared on season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and hosts the wildly popular Retro Game Show Night at Hotel Congress. Patrick is a proud member of United Scenic Artists, local 829.

Bruce Brockman (Scenic Designer) – is the Director of the UA School of Theatre, Film and Television. He has designed scenery for Milwaukee Ballet, American Festival Ballet, Music Theatre Wichita, Milwaukee First Stage Children's Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, University of Michigan, Montana Repertory Theatre, Idaho Theatre for Youth, as well as over 200 university theatre productions. Last summer, he designed the scenery for Newsies, which opened at Pittsburg Light Opera and then moved to Music Theatre Wichita. He served as the President of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and has exhibited at the Prague Quadrennial International Design Exhibition. He is also a program reviewer for the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Joe C. Klug (Properties Designer) – is an Assistant Professor in the School of Theatre, Film & Television. His scenic design work has been seen across the country at Orlando Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, the Summer Repertory Theatre Festival, Santa Rosa's 6th Street Playhouse, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, Chicago Music Theatre Works, Milwaukee First Stage Children’s Theatre, Bristol Valley Theatre Company, New York Hangar Theatre, and Washington, D.C.'s Mead Theatre Lab, among many others. He was recently one of the designers for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology's USA Student Exhibit for the 2015 cycle of the Prague Quadrennial; the international theatre design conference in the Czech Republic.

Joe received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Scenic Design at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign.

PROFILES Kevin Black (Speech Coach) – is an Associate Professor of Practice in The School of Theatre, Film & Television. He teaches acting, first-year voice and movement, coaches voice and dialects, directs and acts in Arizona Repertory Theatre productions. For Arizona Theatre Company, he has played Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, George Wilson The Great Gatsby and coached dialects for King Charles lll, Around the World in 80 Days and The Importance of Being Earnest. A member of Actors' Equity Association, he has acted at the New York Shakespeare Festival, The Pearl Theatre Company, Primary Stages, The Shakespeare Theater at the Folger and many other regional theatres. Ken Phillips (Lighting Designer) – is thrilled to be working on the Arizona Repertory Theatre Stage once again. A Stage Manager Alum of 2013, he has returned to pursue an MFA in Lighting Design. Past UA credits, while working in a variety of different positions, include Evita, Epic Proportions, The Tempest, Comedy of Errors, Cabaret, The Man Who Came To Dinner, Flatland, Boeing-Boeing, Nine, Cymbeline, Ouroboros, How I Learned To Drive, Bat Boy: The Musical, Necessary Targets, Short Attention Span, Hay Fever, The Voice Of The Prairie, & Into The Woods. Quinn Corrigan (Ancestor) – is a BFA junior and Tucson native. He's been performing since he was nine, first with Kids Unlimited and then at Catalina Foothills High School. With Arizona Repertory Theatre, he was last seen in Evita as an Ensemble member and as Bellhop #1 in Born Yesterday. Other notable roles include Scott in Arizona Onstage Productions' The Producers, and Evelyn Oakleigh in Catalina Foothills High School's Anything Goes. Other accomplishments include 2015 top 10 finalist for the National High School Musical Theatre Ben Vereen Awards, portraying Gomez Addams, and a 2015 National Association of Teachers of Singing honorable mention winner. Rachel Franke (Wednesday Addams) - is a junior Musical Theater major and is honored to be taking the stage in The Addams Family as Wednesday. Favorite past theater credits include Evita, Hands on a Hardbody, Footloose, Shrek the Musical, West Side Story, and 9 to 5 the Musical. A Tucson native, he has been seen onstage with Arizona Onstage Productions, Studio Connections, St. Francis in the Foothills, and the Old Pueblo Playwright Festival.

THEATRE POLICIES House Policies: Please turn off watch alarms, mobile phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices. Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted inside the theatre. The use of cameras or recording devices of any kind are strictly prohibited. Children five and under and strollers are not permitted inside the theatre.

Seating Policy: Productions begin on time. Generally, each theatre will open for seating 30 minutes before curtain. There is no late seating.

Refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. All ticket sales are final.

Emergency Messages: Physicians and other patrons expecting emergency calls during a performance are asked to leave their paging devices with the House Manager.

Lost and Found: Lost and found items will be reported to the Fine Arts Box Office at (520) 621-1162. **The video and/or audio recording of this performance by any means whatsoever is strictly prohibited**
