Alumni Notes ALUMNI Jonathan Hicks BFA Acting 2007

Jonathan Hicks is an actor currently in New York City. In recent years, he has worked with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. In New York, Jonathan has stuck with his classical training and is now a member of two classical companies. Currently, he is a company member at the award-winning Titan Theater Company and also the Hyperion Theater Company, which performs in New York and tours in Italy. In addition to acting, he also has an interest in fight choreography and has served as fight director in various productions both in Chicago and New York.

E.E. Moe - producer/actor/director/playwright/arts management consultant/mentor and educator has worked in Los Angeles, New York, regional theatres,and as guest artist for touring productions.

E.E. is Artistic Director/Co-Founder of the distinguished MEGAW Theatre—MEGAW Actors Studio, Inc.of CA/AZ, celebrating its 40th Year (and the memory of Founder Sydney May Morrison); an original founder Actor/Director of Arizona Theatre Company (ATC); alumnus/guest artist/ Director of Production for the UA; a presenter for many national organizations, arts management panels, international arts symposiums and KCACTF. Upon MA graduation, E.E. was hired by Dean Hull as Assistant to the Dean, Director/Concert Manager and Booking Agent for the UA Artist Series program. Some of E.E.ʼs Arizona directing credits include Arizona Jewish Theatre Co, Theatre Artists Studio, Desert Foothills Theatre, Scottsdale Conservatory Theatre, Theatre Out Back, University of Arizona, Invisible Theatre, ASU Lyric Opera Theatre, Arizona Theatre Co, and Scottsdale College SCC (Senior Lecture-current Artistic Director of Directing and Playwriting Showcases). She co-wrote TO FEED THEIR HOPES, AN AMERICAN CANTATA, a celebration of American women (NY, LA & Santa Barbara).

Arizona acting credits: Phoenix Theatre New Works Festival, Theatre Artists Studio, Arizona Womenʼs Theatre Co. Gala Premiere, & Dramatist Guild West. E.E. was recently chosen as lead adjudicator for ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education). Throughout her distinguished career, E.E. and The Megaw Theatre, Inc. artists earned LA Drama Critics, Drama-Logue, LA Reader, LA Weekly, Robby, LA Women in Theatre Lifetime Achievement honors, NY/LA Audience Awards, civic & arts education honors,among others, for over 150 productions.

Note E.E.ʼs professional career reflects her lifelong dedication to developing artists in all mediums: MCCCD 2012 SCC Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Professor Award and 2008 MCCD Foundation Award for Mentorship in the Arts.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES From the moment we are dropped into Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me A Tenor, we find ourselves instantly wrapped up in a fast-paced farce, following Max’s rise to the top in an opera company of old. While 1934 weighs down on the shoulders of the countless masses, what with the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the creeping threat of the growing Nazi party, our outrageous heroes and heroines continue on with their mess-making shenanigans in the race to realize their own personal triumphs, seemingly unaffected by the doom and gloom that the remainder of the country battles on the other side of their hotel door.

As we laugh away the cares we walked in the door with, our attention centers onto the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, a rambunctious pack of spoiled opera staff and stars, trying to clean up after themselves and each other following the death of the biggest opera star of the century, a story that is a story that is reminiscent of our current national narrative. Well, maybe not the tragic celebrity death part, but the Cleveland opera scene was, indeed, bumpin’ in 1934. Opera in Cleveland started out as a mostly artistic venture, only for those truly dedicated to the form, but morphed into more of a social event as the Metropolitan Opera hit the scene. Before and after the Great Depression, homegrown opera lived in the shadows of the Metropolitan Opera. However, when the Depression drained all the money that funded the Metropolitan Opera’s annual trips to Cleveland, the Cleveland opera locals got their long-awaited limelight. By the time the Met came back, opera had grown into a gloriously grand event, both as an artistic and as a social gathering, the place to see and be seen. It was a glamorous time for Cleveland—the side of the 1930’s we like to see.

Perhaps it is for this reason that Ludwig sets his farce amongst those moments in that crowd. Glitz and glamour provide a perfect backdrop for the escapist tendencies of farce. Even the troubles we do see, like the tragic death of our favorite opera star, or a world ripping at the seams, are masked by our own indulgent laughter at the fools in front of us. As the action trips over its own feet, and we get more tangled in the love affairs and hotel room doors, we forget everything except our favorite underdog, Max. Even though we cheer on the chaos and find delight in his misfortune, all along we maintain our loving support of Max and his dreams, and are all too pleased to arrive at the end with him, joyously applauding his deserved success.

Drs. Leonard Joffe and Reid Schindler have been evaluating and treating retinal conditions for more than 35 years. They and Dr. Matthew Welch specialize in treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous, such as Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, OcularTumors, Retinal Tear/Detachment, Vein Occlusions and other rare conditions.

Dr. Joffe, who trained in South Africa, Edinburgh, Scotland and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, has practiced in Tucson for 34 years. He particularly enjoys diagnostic challenges and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1994. He is a member of the Macula Society, the Retina Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Joffe was chosen as Jewish Community Man of the Year in 1992. He enjoys the theater, symphony, golf and U of A Basketball.

Dr. Schindler trained at the University of Alberta, University of Western Ontario and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 2001. He has practiced in Tucson for 27 years and chose medicine for the diagnostic and treatment challenges. He is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and considers being a physician a tremendous privilege. Dr. Schindler served as Chief of Staff at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital from 2008-2010 and enjoys working with the hospital community.

Dr. Welch received his medical degree and ophthalmology training at Loyola University, Chicago, and Stritch School of Medicine. The son of an ICU nurse, his favorite aspect of his practice is the ability to offer care in their office for a variety of conditions.

PROFILES Ken Ludwig (Playwright) – Ken Ludwig is an internationally-acclaimed playwright whose work has been performed in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. He has had six shows on Broadway and six in the West End. He has won two Laurence Olivier Awards, England's highest theatre honor. He has also received three Tony Award nominations and won two Helen Hayes Awards, the Edgar Award, the SETC Distinguished Career Award, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Services to the Theatre. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic. His best known plays and musicals include Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy For You, Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Twentieth Century, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Game's Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, Midsummer/Jersey, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island and The Beaux' Stratagem. His plays have starred Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave, Mickey Rooney, Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter, Tony Shalhoub, Anne Heche, Joan Collins, and Kristin Bell. His new book, How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, was published in June 2013 by Random House, and his work has been published by the Yale Review. David Morden (Director) – David is an Assistant Professor at the School of Theatre, Film & Television, where he directed Inspecting Carol for Arizona Repertory Theatre and Medea/Medea/Medea Redux for the UA Studio Series. He is an Artistic Associate at The Rogue Theatre, where he has acted in and directed many shows, including Measure for Measure, Richard III, Shipwrecked!, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Winter’s Tale, Major Barbara, Ghosts, A Delicate Balance, The Goat, Six Characters in Search of an Author, and Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, Not I, and Act Without Words. David has also directed productions with ATC’s Café Bohemia, Green Thursday Theatre Project, Oasis Chamber Opera, DreamerGirl Productions, and Arts for All. He has acted locally with Arizona Opera, Arizona Onstage Productions, Actors Theatre, and Green Thursday Theatre Project. As Dialect and Text Coach, he has worked with Arizona Repertory Theatre (The Fantasticks, Nine, A Midsummer Night's Dream), Arizona Opera, The Rogue Theatre, ACT Theatre, and the University of Washington, among others. This past summer, David taught a voice workshop at Jagriti Theatre in Bangalore, India.

This is her first show as designer at Arizona Repertory Theatre and she could not be more excited to be presenting Lend Me A Tenor as her senior capstone. She has also served as Assistant Costume Designer for A Midsummer Night's Dream and Love Song at Arizona Repertory Theatre and as a production intern at Rodarte this last summer.

D. Joshua Hemmo (Lighting Designer) – Josh is from Tucson, Arizona, and is excited to be designing his first Arizona Repertory Theatre production! He is currently a junior in the BFA Design/Tech program at the UA. He’s the Lighting Designer for ZUZI! Dance Company and most recently designed a production of Bat Boy: The Musical! in Wenatchee, Washington.

He would like to thank his girlfriend, Hanna; his best friend Steven; and all his friends and family for their continued support and devotion. Most of all, he’d like to thank his

Matt Marcus (Sound Designer) – Matt is the Faculty Sound Designer for the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television and is delighted to be working with a terrific cast, crew, and creative team on this production of Lend Me A Tenor. Recent Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include sound designs for The Secret Garden, Bat Boy: The Musical, Avenue Q, Love Song, Nine, The Fantasticks, and Oklahoma!.

Other productions include the debut of Love, Sweet Love, a musical featuring the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, along with national tours of Aida and Smokey Joe’s Cafe for Theater League; The King and I; Camelot; Bubblin’ Brown Sugar; and Dreamgirls for Theater of the Stars; and a national tour of Will Rogers Follies for Dallas Summer Musicals. In addition to his work in the theatre, Matt has run live sound for hundreds of national and international recording artists. He worked with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, and he currently designs and engineers sound for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. On hiatus from his audio career in the late 20th century, Matt was Property Master for the PBS children’s television program, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

He is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees, and is the Vice President Local 415.

Ted Kraus (Technical Director) – Ted is honored to be a member of the School of Theatre, Film & Television’s Design/Tech faculty in his third year at the University of Arizona. He came to the UA after spending 24 years working in regional theatre and production houses in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; and Nashville, TN; including seven seasons as the Technical Director for the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta, GA. In 2010, he earned his M.Ed. from Belmont University where his work focused on the use of Problem Based Learning environments, like the theatre, to teach critical thinking. Ted would like to

thank all of his BFA, MFA, and TAR 111 students for all of their hard work on this and all of the productions produced this season.

Sara Patterson (Stage Manager) – Sara is a junior in the BFA Design/Tech program with a Stage Management emphasis. She is excited to start her Stage Management career with such a wonderful cast and crew on Lend Me A Tenor!

Previous Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include: Nine, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Other credits include working with the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Company Management and Brelby Theatre Company.

She would like to thank her family and Stephen for all of their support throughout the years!

Elizabeth Boyles (Dramaturg) – Ellie is a junior in the Theatre History & Dramaturgy program at the University of Arizona. Lend Me A Tenor is her first Lead Dramaturg position at the UA, although she did dramaturgical work for Boeing Boeing and A Midsummer Night's Dream last season. She has also recently worked with Winding Road Theatre Ensemble, assistant directing last season's production of boom.

Kevin Black (Voice & Dialect Coach) – Kevin is an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Theatre, Film & Television, teaching Acting and Voice and Movement. He has coached dialects for Arizona Repertory Theatre’s Oklahoma!, Boeing Boeing, How I Learned to Drive, Hay Fever, Violet, and Bus Stop, and he was the Dialect Coach for Arizona Theatre Company’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by Stephen Wrentmore.

He regularly appears in Arizona Repertory Theatre productions, including Cymbeline, As You Like It, Dracula, The Diary of Anne Frank, Leading Ladies, Titus Andronicus, and Henry IV, Parts I & II. A long-time member of Actors’ Equity Association, Kevin has acted at such venues as The New York Shakespeare Festival, The Shakespeare Theater at the Folger, Primary Stages (NYC), The Pearl Theater Co. (NYC), The Alliance Theater (GA), Indiana Rep, Delaware Theater Co., GeVa Theater (NY), Laguna Playhouse (CA), and Pacific Repertory Theater (CA). He played Paul in Invisible Theatre’s US premiere of Mesa; at ATC, he played George Wilson in The Great Gatsby; and appeared in The Last Red Book, The Narrows, and The Tortilla Curtain for ATC’s Cafe Bohemia. His onscreen acting credits include the films Getting to Know You (1999 Sundance Film Festival) and Capture the Flag (2010 Hamptons International Film Festival), directed by his wife, filmmaker Lisanne Skyler.

Kimberly Moeller (Vocal Coach) – Mezzosoprano Kimberly Prins Moeller made her

PROFILES Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 as soloist in Mozart’s Requiem. Other recent appearances include Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, and Handel’s Messiah with the American Chamber Orchestra.

Kimberly is also a coach and accompanist and music-directed the 2013-2014 Opera Scenes programs at the University of Arizona.

She is currently pursuing the DMA in Voice Performance at the University of Arizona, with additional studies in opera coaching and directing. Kimberly holds the Professional Performance Certificate in Voice Performance from Penn State University, an MA in Voice Performance from Montclair State University, and the BMus in Vocal Music Education from Houghton College. ~ ACTOR PROFILES ~ Sterling Boyns (Saunders) – Sterling C. Boyns is a junior in the BFA Acting program. Some of his past roles in high school include Benjamin Coffin III in Rent, Tom Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Jesus in Reefer Madness, and Tom MacKenzie in The Seven Year Itch. At Arizona Repertory Theatre, his past shows have been The Man Who Came to Dinner (John), The Glass Menagerie (Tom Wingfield u/s), and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Francis Flute, Bottom u/s). It has been a joy to work with David Morden, the cast, and crew on this brilliant farce. Brace yourselves and enjoy the show!

Kierna Conner (Maggie) – Kierna, a junior in the BFA Musical Theatre program, is so pleased to be playing Maggie in Lend Me a Tenor. Kierna’s favorite previous credits include Cobweb in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Arizona Repertory Theatre), Babette Biedermann in The Arsonists (UA Studio Series), and Luisa u/s in The Fantasticks (Arizona Repertory Theatre). Kierna would like to thank her family for never asking her if she had a “plan B” and for always backing her up in pursuit of her dreams!

David Hentz (Tito) – David is a senior Acting major from Tucson. His previous Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus), The Fantasticks (Henry) and Cymbeline (Corambis), and ATC's The Importance of Being Earnest (Merriman u/s). He’s also the musician for the UA improvisation troupe, The Charles Darwin Experience. David extends his thanks to David Morden and his castmates, and dedicates his performance to the Hentz family and his dear friends for their unending support.

Grace Kirkpatrick (Diana) – Grace is thrilled to be in this production of Lend Me A Tenor. As a junior, she is studying for her BFA in Acting with a minor in Psychology and is involved in the coed theatre fraternity, Theta Alpha Phi. She was last seen as Puck in Arizona Repertory Theatre's A

Midsummer Night's Dream and Ensemble in Hale Center Theatre's production of Footloose. Grace would like to thank her mom and dad for being her biggest fans.

Brian Klimowski (Max) – Brian is currently a junior at the UA completing his BFA in Musical Theatre. Most recently, he was seen at the Woodstock Playhouse in Woodstock, NY, for their 2014 summer season, which included West Side Story (Tony), Spamalot (Lancelot), Jesus Christ Superstar (Annas), and The Three Musketeers (Buckingham). Last season at the UA, he was seen in Oklahoma! (Ike, Curly u/s) and The Fantasticks (Mute, El Gallo u/s). Other credits include Miss Saigon (Chris), Hello Dolly! (Cornelius), and Grease (Kenickie). Around the Tucson area, he performs regularly with Mister Bing's Performing Arts Lounge as a cabaret singer and emcee, and also as a juggler and variety artist. “A big thank you to my family and friends for your constant support and love. Silvia Vannoy (Julia) – Silvia is a senior Musical Theatre BFA student and is thrilled to be continuing her Arizona Repertory Theatre career as a part of the 2015 class. She was most recently seen as Laurey in Oklahoma!, and a few of her favorite past roles include Lorraine in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Gloria in Boeing Boeing, and Lady of the Spa in Nine. THEATRE POLICIES House Policies: Please turn off watch alarms, mobile phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices. Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted in the theatre. The use of cameras or recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited. Children five and under and strollers are not permitted in the theatre.

Seating Policy: Productions begin on time. Generally, each theatre will open for seating 30 minutes before curtain. There is no late seating.

Refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. All ticket sales are final.

TtheheShowcase goal of our Take Your Seat! campaign is to raise funds for of Talent Endowment. The annual Showcase of

Talent provides an opportunity for senior Acting and Musical Theatre majors to audition for, and interview with, industry professionals for theatre, film and television across the country.

These potential employers also interview and review portfolios of junior and senior Design/Technology and Dramaturgy majors, as well as present valuable workshops to help students transition into the professional world.

S ome of our students secure employment as a result of the Showcase of Talent, and all receive the priceless experience of interacting with working professionals.
