DRAMATURG’S NOTES The myth of Frankenstein is embedded in our cultural psyche. A scientist plays God and loses. A creator abandons his son in his moment of need. We associate Frankenstein with the danger of science and ego unchecked. We question the audacity of a man who takes life and death into his own hands.

However, what we rarely discuss is: what if the scientist’s experiment had gone well? What if he had been able to see that the person he created was that - a person - and not a creature?

In Frankenstein, the scientist, Victor, sets out to re-animate life. He aims to revive the great minds of his time so they can be consulted about the past and future of the world. He intends to rid the earth of disease and create a new age of man. We miss the purity of Victor’s noble pursuit because we know all too well how the story ends. If it had gone well, how different would this story be? Victor believes the sacrifices he asks his family to make for him serve the greater good. Victor imagines that his creature will solve the problems of the world, cure disease, and usher in a new race. He hopes that the glory of his creation will win him forgiveness for missing the critical moments of his personal life. Victor expects his creature to bear the weight of his mistakes and to selflessly serve him. He fashions the creature to fulfill his own needs. He does not envision his creature as possessing its own desires, thoughts, and feelings.

Frankenstein raises the question: what elevates us from bodies to beings?

Arguably, a soul. Victor tells Henri that he hasn't factored a soul into the equation because he's never seen a soul before. Victor wrongly assumes that if he did not intend to create a soul, then a soul would not arise. Victor claims he is not an atheist and says he had not even considered that creating a sentient being would make him godlike. Ironically, he does create a living, breathing person with independent thoughts and desires. The creature’s emotions reach far beyond primal instincts, but Victor treats him like an animal anyway. The creature wants to understand the nature of its own soul and existence. The creature reaches out repeatedly only to be treated as a sub-human being. Victor’s refusal to acknowledge that the creature might possess any humanity at all causes the creature to act out and destroy Victor’s life. In performing these base and vile acts, the creature robs himself of the humanity he so desperately desired.

Drs. Leonard Joffe and Reid Schindler have been evaluating and treating retinal conditions for more than 35 years. They and Dr. Matthew Welch specialize in treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous, such as Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, OcularTumors, Retinal Tear/Detachment, Vein Occlusions and other rare conditions.

Dr. Joffe, who trained in South Africa, Edinburgh, Scotland and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, has practiced in Tucson for 34 years. He particularly enjoys diagnostic challenges and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1994. He is a member of the Macula Society, the Retina Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Joffe was chosen as Jewish Community Man of the Year in 1992. He enjoys the theater, symphony, golf and U of A Basketball.

Dr. Schindler trained at the University of Alberta, University of Western Ontario and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 2001. He has practiced in Tucson for 27 years and chose medicine for the diagnostic and treatment challenges. He is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and considers being a physician a tremendous privilege. Dr. Schindler served as Chief of Staff at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital from 2008-2010 and enjoys working with the hospital community.

Dr. Welch received his medical degree and ophthalmology training at Loyola University, Chicago, and Stritch School of Medicine. The son of an ICU nurse, his favorite aspect of his practice is the ability to offer care in their office for a variety of conditions.

PROFILES Brent Gibbs (Director) – Brent is a member of the Acting/Musical Theatre Division at the UA where he teaches Acting and Stage Combat. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.

A certified teacher and Fight Director with the Society of American Fight Directors, he has worked on fight sequences in theatres from Thailand to New York, winning the Arizona State Theatre Award for Excellence in Choreography for his fights in the Southwest Shakespeare Company’s production of Henry V. He has taught master classes in Stage Combat around the U.S. and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His fight work has been seen at the San Jose Repertory Theatre, The Guthrie Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, and The Kansas City Repertory Theatre. For four summers, Brent taught stage combat workshops at The International Theatre School Festival held in Amsterdam. For nine years, he served as Director and Fight Choreographer for one of the nation’s leading outdoor dramas, Tecumseh! He is the Artistic Director for Arizona Repertory Theatre, where he has directed Execution of Justice; The Crucible; Macbeth; On the Razzle; Much Ado About Nothing; Les Liaisons Dangereuses; King Lear; Absurd Person Singular; Hamlet; The Rivals; Pericles; Rain. Peter Beudert (Scenic Designer) – Peter’s recent professional scenic design work includes Dead Man Walking and Nixon in China at the Eugene Opera, Sweeney Todd at Notre Dame University, Hunter/ Gatherers and THIS at the Actors’ Theatre Phoenix. Other recent professional productions include: A Going Concern at the award-winning Famous Door Theatre (Chicago), Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, and The Pajama Game and W;t at the Arizona Theatre Company. Here at the Arizona Repertory Theatre, he has designed scenery for Inspecting Carol, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Dracula, The Taming of the Shrew and The Tamer Tamed, Tartuffe, Henry IV Parts I & II, The Cider House Rules, Cabaret, Arcadia, The Kentucky Cycle, and many other excellent productions as well as the designing projections for The Who’s TOMMY. Peter is continuing a joint project of films about The University of Arizona with faculty

and students of the Theatre and the Film and Television programs of the School.

The film currently in production tells the story of A.E. Douglass and the creation of Steward Observatory. Peter initiated an advanced training initiative for theatre technicians known as Entertainment Technology in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Recently, he was a senior Fulbright Research Scholar working with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Paris Opera. This was his second Fulbright. He is co-author of all three editions of Scenic Art for the Theatre with Susan Crabtree. Professor Beudert is a member of United Scenic Artists. He is a recipient of the College of Fine Arts Charles and Irene Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching and holds the rank of University Distinguished Professor.

Patrick Holt (Costume Designer) – Patrick Holt’s costume design credits include the Pioneer Theater Company's Sweet Charity, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s recent production of American Buffalo; the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s productions of The Three Musketeers, West Side Story, Peter Pan, James and the Giant Peach, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, As You Like It, An O. Henry Christmas, and Treasure Island; Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s productions of Othello, Hamlet, Richard III, Henry V, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for which he won the 2007 Best Costume Design Award by the Denver Post and Colorado Theatre Critics. For Arizona Repertory Theatre, recent designs include: Nine, Inspecting Carol, Julius Caesar, The Secret Garden, Into the Woods, Dracula, The Taming of the Shrew, The Tamer Tamed, Rum and Coke, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Medea, The Rocky Horror Show, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and many other designs. As Resident Costume Designer for Playmakers Repertory Company, designs include: All’s Well That Ends Well, The Laramie Project, The Man Who Came to Dinner, An O. Henry Christmas, The Glass Menagerie, and Master Harold and the Boys. He designed the world premiere productions of Romulus Linney’s Gint at The North Carolina School of the Arts, and Tazewell Thompson’s Constant Star at Playmaker’s Repertory Company. Patrick has taught at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and at The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts.

Currently he is an Associate Professor of Costume Design at the UA. Patrick is a member of United Scenic Artists, local 829.

Eve Bandi (Lighting Designer) – Eve Bandi is a second year graduate student in the lighting department here at the University of Arizona. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011 with a degree in physics/astronomy. Her previous work with Arizona Repertory Theatre includes Associate Lighting Designer for The Man Who Came to Dinner and Lighting Designer for last spring's The Glass Menagerie. Over the summer, she designed the lights in Pittsburgh for No Name Players' Evil Dead: The Musical, reSOUNDing Courage, and Fixing King John. She is also lighting designer for the upcoming A Little Night Music.

Daniel Colecchia (Sound Designer) – Daniel is thrilled to be a part of Frankenstein and is honored to have this be his senior capstone and final design at the university.

Previous shows he has worked on as a designer are A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Boeing Boeing. He would like to thank his friends and family for their support.

Angela McMahon (Technical Director) – Angela is a second year MFA student in Technical Direction. Her past Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include Assistant Technical Director for The Fantasticks and Oklahoma!. She has previously worked at Tibbits Opera House and the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Angela is originally from Kalamazoo, MI, where she received her BA from Western Michigan University.

Courtney Stevens (Stage Manager) – Courtney is a senior in the Design/Tech BFA program with an emphasis in Stage Management. While Stage Management is her emphasis, she also enjoys doing stage electrician work with the Lighting department. Her Stage Management Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include the productions of Boeing Boeing, The Glass Menagerie, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other credits include productions of Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Seussical: The Musical. She would like to thank her family for always supporting her.

Kalan Benbow (Dramaturg) – Kalan is a senior in the BFA Theatre History/ Dramaturgy program. She has had the privilege to work on The Fantasticks and The Glass Menagerie with Arizona Repertory Theatre and is currently working with The Rogue Theatre on their upcoming production of Jerusalem. She believes that courageous and candid theatre can change the world and thanks her parents, Keith and Kimbra Benbow, for their boundless love and support. She could not do this without them.

Dianne J. Winslow (Voice & Dialect Coach) – Ms. Winslow teaches Voice and Movement and Period Styles with an emphasis in Shakespeare in our professional actor training programs. She coaches vocal production, textual analysis, and dialects for Arizona Repertory Theatre productions. Coaching assignments have included The Glass Menagerie, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Cymbeline, Inspecting Carol, Avenue Q, Julius Caesar, The Secret Garden, As You Like It, Dracula, What I Did Last Summer, The Diary of Anne Frank, Rum & Coke, Medea, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Titus Andronicus, and The Miracle Worker. Over twenty-five production credits with Arizona Theatre Company include dialect coaching for The Sunshine Boys, Sherlock Holmes and the Adventures of the Suicide Club, Lost In Yonkers, The Lady with All the Answers, To Kill a Mockingbird, I Am My Own Wife, Pride and Prejudice, Oh, Coward!, A Streetcar Named Desire, Talley’s Folly, Over the Moon, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Proof, Valley Song, Candida, Fires in the Mirror, Dancing at Lughnasa, Noises Off!, Dracula, Fully Committed, and Sea Marks. At The Invisible Theatre, she was Voice and Movement Coach for the internationally acclaimed production of A Conversation with Edith Head, which played in London’s West End and continues to tour nationally. In Phoenix, she coached styles and dialects for Southwest Shakespeare’s London Assurance. A member of the Screen Actors Guild/AFTRA, Ms. Winslow also works as a professional vocal coach for actors and private clients in the film and television industries.

~ ACTOR PROFILES ~ Bailey Axen (William - 10/20, 10/23, 10/25, 10/31, 11/1 & 11/7) – Bailey is a fifth grader at Manzanita Elementary.

He has been acting since the age of five.

Bailey performed at The Great American Playhouse as Tiny Tim in Scrooge. He performed for Live Theatre Workshop All Together Theatre as Vinny in The Great

PROFILES Zantini and the Magic Thief. Currently, he is cast as Aladdin in Aladdin and His Wonderful Magical Lamp with the Gaslight Youth Theater. Bailey also recently played the Lion in The Wizard of Oz with the Gaslight Youth Theater. Bailey enjoys playing basketball, chess, singing, acting, hanging with his buddies and (of course) video games.

Micah Bond (Creature) – Micah is electrified to terrorize the stage in Arizona Repertory Theatre’s production of Frankenstein. This is Micah’s senior year as a Musical Theatre major. He appeared most recently as Jud Fry in Arizona Repertory Theatre’s Oklahoma!.You may also have seen him on the Arizona Repertory Theatre stage as Beverly Carlton in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Iachimo in Cymbeline or as Trekkie Monster in Avenue Q. Matthew Bowdren (Victor Frankenstein) – Matthew Bowdren is currently engaged in a Post Graduate Fellowship in Acting.

Matthew has performed regionally in New York City and Georgia in a range of companies including the Hudson Shakespeare Company (A Midsummer

Night's Dream) Collaborative Stages (Somewhere in Between) and The Rose of Athens (Comedy of Errors). Matthew is also an Artistic Associate and Education Coordinator for The Rogue Theatre where he has been seen in after the quake, Betrayal, Measure for Measure, Arcadia, Kafka’s Metamorphosis, and others. Along with performing in their season, Matthew directs a training program for the Rogue Theatre's Company of resident actors.

Other Arizona credits include Southwest Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) and The Now Theatre (The Pillowman and The Fever Chart). Matthew is a member of Actors Equity and holds an MFA in Performance from the University of Georgia.

Heather Marie Cox (Delacia) – Heather Cox is a senior and in her final year in the BFA acting program. This is her fifth Arizona Repertory Theatre production and she could not be more grateful for this opportunity. The last four years at the University of Arizona have fostered incredible growth and allowed her to feel confident that she has the skill set she needs to be successful upon graduating.

The family and friends that she has made here will never be forgotten. Her most recent Arizona Repertory Theatre endeavor was Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream. You might have also seen her last fall in ATC's production of The Importance of Being Earnest as Cecily Cardew. Past Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include Frankie in The Voice of the Prairie, and various roles in Julius Caesar and As You Like It. She would like to thank her family, friends and would like to extend a special thanks to Dianne Winslow, Brent Gibbs, and Stephen Wrentmore. She could not have asked for better mentors, their support and encouragement continually keeps her striving to better herself in her craft.

Zak Gruber (William) – Zak is in third grade at a local elementary school. He has appeared in several Missoula Children’s Theatre productions including Alice in Wonderland as the Knave of Hearts, Beauty Lou and the Country Beast as a rooster, The Frog Prince as a toad, and The Secret Garden as grapes. He also likes biking, swimming and climbing. He has really enjoyed having the opportunity to work on Frankenstein.

Abigail Grace Harms (Frau Müller) – Abigail is a junior Acting major from Sierra Vista, Arizona. She is thrilled to be returning to the Arizona Repertory Theatre stage this semester in her third production. She was recently seen in Arizona Repertory Theatre’s The Man Who Came to Dinner as Mrs. Dexter. Some of her

PROFILES favorite past roles include Patty in Grease, Lucy in William McNulty’s Dracula, and Hippolyta in A Midsummers Night’s Dream.

Abigail is thrilled to be a part of such a talented cast and crew. She would like to thank her parents for all their prayers and support.

David Hentz (Müller) – David is a senior Acting major from Tucson. His previous Arizona Repertory Theatre credits include Lend Me A Tenor (Tito), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus), The Fantasticks (Henry), Cymbeline (Corambis), and ATC's The Importance of Being Earnest (Merriman u/s). He’s also the musician for the UA improvisation troupe, The Charles Darwin Experience. David extends his thanks to Brent, Scott Murdock, and his incredibly talented castmates. He dedicates his performance to his dear friend, Diego Lopez.

Hunter V. Hnat (Henri) – Hunter is very humbled to be taking part in Arizona Repertory Theatre’s production of Frankenstein. As a local Tucson boy, earning the opportunity to be a senior in this company is a dream come true.

You may have seen him as Ali Hakim in Oklahoma!, Professor Metz in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Pisanio in Cymbeline, or perhaps as the Elephant Topiary in The Secret Garden (his Arizona Repertory Theatre debut). He would like to thank his best friend, Christine Rupley, and his loving boyfriend, Raul Martinez, for all of their love and support. Please enjoy the show!

Crash Holt (Fritz) – Crash Holt is a happy, four-year-old canine who can usually be found wrestling with his French Bulldog brother (and understudy), Truman Holt.

In his spare time, Crash likes chasing the family chickens, sleeping on the furniture when nobody is looking, and practicing breathing quietly. Crash is proud to be making his stage debut with the Arizona Repertory Theatre.

Keenan Larson (Schmidt) – Keenan Larson is a sophomore in the BFA Musical Theatre progam and is making his debut at Arizona Repertory Theatre in this production of Frankenstein. Some of Keenan's notable past roles are Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast, Rum Tum Tugger from Cats, and one of the two Clowns in The 39 Steps.

Keenan thanks his family and friends for their love, support, and tolerance, and also would like to thank you, the audience member, for your support of the arts.

Scott Murdock (Metz) – Scott Murdock is a sophomore in the acting program and is

from Glendale, AZ. He is thrilled to make his Arizona Repertory Theatre debut in a production with such social magnitude as Frankenstein. He’s been acting for 12 years and has accumulated past credits in BA staged readings, film projects and hometown theaters. He has also worked as Assistant Sound Designer for Arizona Repertory Theatre’s The Fantasticks, as well as A2 for Oklahoma!. But now, it’s time to play.

Carli Naff (Elizabeth) – Carli is a senior in the BFA Musical Theatre program. This bittersweet show will be her last with Arizona Repertory Theatre. She could not have asked for a more talented and wonderful cast or a better crew to work with, and would especially like to thank her director, Brent Gibbs, for always fostering her growth as an actor and always providing a safe and exciting space in which to create. She was last seen as THE WALL in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and before that as Gabriella in Boeing Boeing. She spent the summer studying at the Stella Adler Studio in NYC, and hopes to return to the city indefinitely next fall!

Her passion for acting has flourished here at the UA, and she could not have come this far without the support and love of her ENTIRE family (shout out to ALL the Naffs), nor the wisdom and personal care of her professors. It has been a life-changing 3.5 years, and she wishes to extend all of her love and gratitude to everyone who has been a part of it. Thank you.

David Weynand (Alphonse Frankenstein) – David Weynand is proud to join Arizona Repertory Theatre on an Acting Fellowship.

David holds an MFA in Directing from Texas State University and a BFA in Acting from the Theatre School, DePaul University’s professional conservatory, formerly the Goodman School of Drama.

Favorite credits include: Off-Broadway one man Night just before the Forest - (UBU Repertory) and Ron in The Ice Fishing Play - (The Samuel Beckett Theatre).

House Policies: Please turn off watch alarms, mobile phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices.

Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted in the theatre. The use of cameras or recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited. Children five and under and strollers are not permitted in the theatre.

Seating Policy: Productions begin on time. Generally, each theatre will open for seating 30 minutes before curtain. There is no late seating.

Refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. All ticket sales are final.

Emergency Messages: Physicians and other patrons expecting emergency calls during a performance are asked to leave their paging devices with the House Manager.

he goal of our Take Your Seat! campaign is to raise funds for the Showcase of Talent Endowment. The annual Showcase of Talent provides an opportunity for senior Acting and Musical Theatre majors to audition for, and interview with, industry professionals for theatre, film and television across the country.

These potential employers also interview and review portfolios of junior and senior Design/Technology and Dramaturgy majors, as well as present valuable workshops to help students transition into the professional world.
