Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work! Last summer, the UA Theatre Fund For Excellence helped make it possible for 10 students from the School of Theatre, Film & Television to perform in the International Festival of Theatre School’s Istropolitana Projekt held in Bratislava, Slovakia. This prestigious festival is a juried event and there were productions from Germany, Spain, Russia, Israel, Hong Kong, Poland and Indonesia, as well as many other countries. The University of Arizona was the only entry accepted from the United States. The students performed SPEAKING OF, an original script written by BFA Musical Theatre student, Austin Wright, which was directed by BFA Acting student, Abigail Harms. The performers and stage manager came UA Theatre students in front of the Old Town Hall Museum in Bratislava. from a variety of programs from within the School, including our BFA and BA programs. The students had the chance to not only present their own work, but they also had the opportunity to see the work of other students from around the world, and most importantly, to engage directly with those students throughout the week-long festival. This experience changed each of these students' lives and we are exceedingly grateful to all of those who helped make this trip possible. As Musical Theatre student Adia Bell said, “To those who made this trip a reality financially, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude. This trip was not only helpful in my growing as an artist, but as a person, as well. Not only did we get the opportunity to perform in a different country, but we also got to explore that country. I will always treasure the things I have learned and the memories I have made. Thank you so much for making this all possible.”

Brent Gibbs, Artistic Director - Arizona Repertory Theatre Associate Professor, Head of BFA Acting - School of Theatre, Film & Television

DRAMATURG’S NOTES The American narrative of one who moves way out west and creates something wonderful out of practically nothing, is an archetypal hero’s journey. The history of Hollywood mirrors this classic tale. In the early 1900s, all of the major rights and patents involved in moviemaking were owned by the Motion Picture Patents Company, created by Thomas Edison, to monopolize the industry and keep it based in New York. What is now Hollywood started out as a group of independent film companies that set up in California in order to evade legal persecution by Edison’s group. In California, the sky was clear, the sun was bright, and there were plenty of perfect locations for filming nearby. By the 1930s, the movie industry was a booming success. In fact, business was doing so well that not even the Great Depression could slow down production. During this time, movies were made on such a grand scale that they continue to resonate with audiences today. The original, full-length film of Ben-Hur, directed by Fred Niblo, was made in 1924, and it still has one of cinema history’s most thrilling chariot chase scenes. The number of extras on the set of a film of such epic proportions ranged up to as many as 125,000. Hollywood had - and continues to have - an obsession with the larger-thanlife stories of heroes of ancient Egypt and Rome. In the 1930s, where our story takes place, the stories demanded a huge scale with thousands of dollars spent and thousands of extras cast, but at its core, the story remains the simple tale of the humble, self-made hero. Benny and Phil’s story is the American hero’s story. They both came out west to seek their fortunes and under the hot Arizona sun, they each find their own epic calling.

- Alexandra Totillo Dramaturg/Audience Engagement Liaison
