DIRECTOR'S NOTES When asked about his writing style, playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh explained that it came about through a desire to “capture how we really speak, through its oddness.” Over the years, this eccentric and undeniably human voice in the theatre has become one of the most important writers of our time. In 1997 he tied a record with William Shakespeare when four of his plays were running concurrently on London’s West End. His great success also includes the films In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, earning seven Oscar® nominations, and a Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor award for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell respectively. But it is his two Irish masterworks that perhaps have made the most lasting impression: The Leenane Trilogy and The Aran Plays, from which we take The Cripple of Inishmaan. Inspired by the real life visit of filmmaker Robert Flaherty, the play tells the story of an orphan at war with isolation. Through a series of unlikely events, we detail “Cripple Billy’s” battle through a maze of caustic adversity, human inconsistencies, and a wry warping of Irish folksiness that is a signature of Mr. McDonagh’s writing. These are thickskinned, quick-witted, and unexpectedly compassionate people; and above all, unassailably recognizable. “Ireland mustn’t be such a bad place if…” is a defense proclaimed by nearly every character in The Cripple of Inishmaan. McDonagh irrefutably argues their case in this wickedly funny, poignant, and ironic play that is equal parts black comedy and fable. ~ Hank Stratton, Director

THE

STUDIO SERIES 2018-2019 Season The Studio Series is dedicated to supporting original, contemporary, and experimental performance through a bare essentials production model with the primary focus on the artistic and intellectual labor of the theatre students. The Studio Series focuses on collaboration, innovation, and process rather than product. Performances are immediate, rough, and presented as the creative result of the process. It is a community-centered, people-generated approach to performance that provides creative learning opportunities for student artists, thought-provoking experiences for audiences, and occasions for productive dialogue around topics relevant to diverse populations both locally and globally.

Please Note: Studio Series Performances are NOT for children
