LES PRELUDES

Program Notes

In All Its Glory was composed in 1989 by James Swearingen, who has composed extensively for wind bands. “Glory” refers to the American flag. After a brief slow introduction, the lively main melody begins, which resembles a drum and fife style tune. Some mixed meter makes for a more interesting setting. The lushly arranged middle section sounds an ode to the American landscape before the main melody returns.

The Music-Makers Concert Overture is a concert overture written specifically for band and debuted on May 16th 1967. The music is made up of seven different motives of different moods and colors and was inspired by Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s ODE:

We are the music-makers, and we the dreamers of dreams Yet we are the movers and shakers of the world forever, it seems One man with a dream, at pleasure shall go forth and conquer a crown And three with a new song’s measure can trample an empire down

Jurassic Park Soundtrack Highlights is another example of John Williams’ genius movie scoring ability. Alternatingly slow and mysterious, soaring and melodious, gentle and delicate, and gloriously triumphant, the movie would not have been the same without this music as a backdrop.

Nabucco Overture is from Verdi’s opera that is in four acts and premiered ar La Scala, Milan on March 9th, 1842. This piece proclaimed Verdi as a new hero of Italian Operas inn the company of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. The plot involves the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzer, king of Babylon and the subsequent enslavement of the Hebrews. Typical of operas at the time there are also subplots and lovers’ intrigues mixed in with the historical aspects.

Les Préludes

Les préludes ("Preludes" or "The Beginnings"), S.97, is the third of Franz Liszt's thirteen symphonic poems. The music was composed between 1845 and 1854, and began as an overture to Liszt's choral cycle Les quatre élémens (The Four Elements), then revised as a stand-alone concert overture, with a new title referring to a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine. Its premiere was on 23 February 1854, conducted by Liszt himself. Les préludes is the earliest example of an orchestral work entitled "Symphonic Poem".
