THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ The University of Alcalá (UAH) is a public institution founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. One of Europe’s oldest universities, its influence has been felt both near - it is one of the earliest examples of a planned university town- and far (its articles of constitution have served as a model for various Latin American universities). Its alumni include some of the most famous names of Spanish culture, such as Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo and Tirso de Molina. Alcalá de Henares was also the birthplace of Cervantes, the creator of the greatest figure in Spanish literature, Don Quixote de la Mancha. In recognition both of its cultural importance and its impressive

architectural inheritance, in 1998 the University was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the center of Spain, the university is 30 kilometres east of Madrid and is easily accessible (20 kilometres) from Madrid’s Barajas airport. The cradle of Cervantes is alive with the activities of the university and offers an exceptional environment in which to pursue academic goals. to the most important Spanish literary award ceremony, the Cervantes Prize. Also, jointly with Spain’s Public Ombudsman, every two years in the same assembly hall the University of Alcalá awards the King of Spain Prize for Human Rights, in recognition and encouragement of outstanding contributions made by Spanish and Latin American organizations to the defence and advancement of human rights and democratic values. Today, the University of Alcalá is a modern institution which offers a wide range of degrees in all fields of knowledge. It is also one of the first universities in Spain to be fully adapted to the European Higher Education Area. The university presently enrolls nearly 30,000 students, two-thirds of whom are reading for undergraduate degrees taught by a teaching

staff of 1,800 professors, lecturers and researchers. The university is also proud of its modern and efficient administration, attended by approximately 800 service staff. Students have access to up-to-date facilities such as the On-Line University, which makes available teaching materials for more than 900 subjects. Alcalá also houses 26 fully equipped computer rooms, and provides WIFI networks in all buildings, along with a laptop computer lending service. The university has 16 libraries seating 2,700 readers and a large digital collection which includes over 16,000 different e-journals. The university’s teaching and research staff also enjoy access from their work centres to the more than 10 million volumes held in the National Library Repository located on the university’s Science and Technology Campus. WHAT AND WHERE CAN I STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ? The University of Alcalá offers degrees in five branches of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences, Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering and Architecture. Its approximately 20,000 undergraduate students are spread across its three campuses: A university with a rich humanistic tradition The Historical Campus houses the humanities, architecture, the social sciences and law. In the vanguard of science and technology Situated on the city’s outskirts, the Science and Technology Campus is home to the Sciences, including the Health professions, and Engineering. An expanding university 25 kilometres to the east, the Guadalajara Campus is well-connected with both Alcalá de Henares and Madrid. A variety of degrees in

the Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Architecture are taught here. A new campus is presently under construction, as is the Guadalajara Science and Technology Park, which will have modern, sustainable buildings occupying a total area of 70,000 square metres.
WHAT ABOUT POSTGRADUATE DEGREES? Scholarships and grants are available to read for most UAH degrees. More than 9,500 students enrol in the University of Alcalá for their postgraduate training. The University of Alcalá offers more than 200 postgraduate degrees, comprising research masters, taught masters, doctoral programmes and specially designed expert programmes, all adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It is one of the Spanish universities with the largest number of graduate degrees and lifelong ongoing education courses. All degree programmes include work experience internships in companies or research institutes.

HOW CAN I LEARN SPANISH LANGUAGE AND SPANISH CULTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ? Spanish language and Spanish culture are taught at the University of Alcalá (UAH) in three different programmes, which by themselves or as a whole satisfy the needs of our potential students.
Campus-based or online teaching. Period of study adapted to academic year or calendar year.
A UNIVERSITY WITH AN INTERNATIONAL VOCATION Around 600 agreements with universities from five continents allow our students to complete part of their degrees in other countries. Over 5,000 students from more than 60 different nationalities study at the University each year. The UAH offers scholarships and grants for postgraduates such as the Miguel de Cervantes Scholarships or grants for the Benjamin Franklin University Research

Alcalingua is the UAH’s Center for studying Spanish as a Foreign Language. It offers both directly-taught and distance-learning classes during the fall and spring semesters as well as during the summer term. University of Alcalá as visiting or exchange students if they are attending a regular programme at another university and can demonstrate knowledge of Spanish language at a level equal to or higher than level B1 of DELE. Students interested in Spanish language and/or Spanish culture usually take courses pertaining to the B.A. degrees of Hispanic Studies, History, Humanities and/or Modern Languages and Translation.
COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH moreover one of the sites which awards the official Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE).
The University is firmly committed to research as the engine of innovation and change. It is ranked among Spain’s top universities in terms of number of doctoral theses, patents and research output1.
The Franklin Institute teaches courses in Spanish Language and Culture for foreign students in both Spanish and English during the fall and spring semesters in addition to the summer term. Regular classes are complemented with a variety of cultural activities, such as visits to museums, theatres, governmental institutions, trips to historical cities, etc. Its calendar and grading systems are adapted to those of the American university system.
Through its Science and Technology Parks, the university fosters relations between the academic world and the business community, thus fomenting the creation of innovative companies in R+D intensive sectors.

teaching hospitals where students may do their internships: the Prince of Asturias University Hospital, next to the Faculty of Medicine; the Ramón y Cajal Hospital and the Gómez Ulla Central Military Hospital, both in Madrid; and Guadalajara’s University Hospital. The UAH is strongly committed to environmental responsibility and sustainability. Part of this effort involves the Juan Carlos I Botanical Garden, a green space occupying 260,000 square metres on the Science and Technology Campus and home to more than 12,000 species. The UAH also manages a project for researching, preserving and disseminating knowledge about plant-life and the environment.
SUPPORT The UAH provides a wide range of guidance services. These include individualised pedagogical attention, beginning with the assignment of a permanent personal tutor when students first enrol in the university. Also available are professional Psychological Services and Educational Workshops which advise students regarding study techniques and ways to improve achievement levels.

WHERE CAN I LIVE? In modern residence halls (either in shared flats or individual apartments), all equipped with common spaces for relaxation, study and cooking, as well as Internet connections, laundry and maintenance service. Also available is the pioneering intergenerational “Vive y Convive” programme through which students share housing with elderly people. We offer free flat search and flat share services.
WHAT CAN I DO WHEN NOT STUDYING? The welcoming nature of the Spanish people and, more particularly, of the inhabitants of Alcalá and Guadalajara, the lively student scene and the local cultural and leisure attractions are all good reasons for choosing the University of Alcalá. The university’s own installations and other facilities providing special access for UAH students make available a wide variety of sports: aikido, fencing, horse-riding, archery, volleyball, athletics, rugby, climbing, tennis, basketball, golf, swimming, sailing, diving, hiking, mountaineering, and winter sports, to name but a few.

The Writing School, Foreign Language Centre, Language Laboratories, voluntary activities, massage and physiotherapy room, film club, orchestra, choir, university traditional music group … these are just some of the options available to make your time at the university as much fun as possible, as well as personally enriching. Quality train and bus connections between the three campuses and facilities for renting bicycles. Both Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara have a large student population and offer many leisure and recreational options (cinemas, theatres, museums, restaurants, bars, nightclubs …). The University of Alcalá is conveniently situated a half hour from Madrid by bus, train, or private transport. Madrid provides all the opportunities for leisure one would expect to find in one of Europe’s leading capital cities. Excellent communications by coach or high speed train allow UAH students to reach the rest of Spain rapidly and comfortably (Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Barcelona, Valencia…).
